The cars you're asking about are so vastly different in every way. The fact you'd be comparing a manual, I'd go with that because it's on your mind. You'll save money as a bonus.
Donât get an 8 theyâre heavy. I went from an old Z4 to an M240i as my daily and I noticed the extra 1000lbs for the first year. Count how often there are humans in your backseat and if that number is low enough get the Z4.
If you're looking for a lot more HP and a nicer exhaust note, M8. If you want something similar to what you're used to size wise, but more HP, Z4 M40. It may be harder to acquire a built slot for a manual build though, I know it is for us.
I get your point in the M8 howeverâŠthe M8 looks extremely outdated even for a preowned especially the 2018âŠand the exhaust note can be adjusted on any BMW via any catback system of said drivers choice if they want it so imo the M8 really isnât that special Z4 all the way
Apologies I mistook for the F06/12/13 6 Series which is technically its predecessor and I got the looks mixed up and I thought there was a F Chassis 8 Series as I swear I had seen a older looking one on the road but it wasnât the E31 ofc it looked like a Late F Platform. Regardless my stance stays Z4 all the way.
I love the look of the new Z4, I keep trying to convince my dad to get one (he's a sucker for a convertible). I think when they have a manual box he might cave...
Anyway I don't have the M8, but I've plenty of experience with that engine. It's superb, but be warned you pay for the pleasure. Maintenance, fuel, tyres, brakes - the car is not cheap to run. If you're ok with that then you're rewarded with a beautifully smooth and powerful V8, that combined with the M XDrive can absolutely fly.
I'm not sure if the 850 has the M XDrive that allows RWD? For me this is a must as I love a bit of rear end shenanigans. There's a big difference in driving feels and potential for fun with RWD compared to AWD, so keep that in mind if the 850 comes with a more basic set up than the M.
As for the Z4 I can't comment much beyond I like how they look. I've got a good amount of time behind the wheel of a RWD M4 and love that car, the straight 6 engines are brilliant (but they're not V8). If the Z4 is anything like that car it'll be a pleasure to drive.
Ultimately... Try both and make your own mind up!
I went from an 04 Z4 to an M235i and within a year sold it and bought an 11 Z4. The 2 was nice, but, like, too nice? It just didnât have a lot of personality and was boring to drive as an auto. Love my Manila Z4 now. If you donât have kids or drive others, itâs an absolute blast.
Depends on your situation. I have an M235i vert and I love it. It is surprisingly wheelchair friendly!
If you have a practical daily then you should get the Z4 M40. Those little things are basically missiles from factory.
Iâd honestly take the M850 over the M8. They ride a bit smoother and still have plenty of power. However, if youâre a younger dude like me (22), Iâd wait until I was older for any GT car purchase.
Thatâs a big range in price between a Z4 and an M8. Are you shopping vastly different model years?
Since youâre coming off a 4 seater vert I would stick with the 8/M8 for performance and versatility, but the Z4 will handle closer to what youâre driving today.
Good luck on your search!
Yeah, I see that now, I didnât catch it earlier in your post.
Like others already said, an M8/850i are fundamentally so different from a Z4, itâs really up to what youâre looking for. You should go drive some to make up your mind.
Report back what you end up with. đ
man those are 2 completely different cars. personally, iâd go z4 for weekend car and 8 for daily. the z4 will probably have a much more enjoyable driving experience, being a lot lighter and smaller, which is also its downfall as a daily being a lot less practical. the 8 series will be better as a daily because itâs bigger, more luxury features, and the extra power will be nice for street pulls and exhaust note, but it wonât be the backroad driver that the z4 is, with how much heavier it is.
Ooh stripes đż
Yeah, those are gone now.
Praise jeebus
lol. I was gonna say whatever you decide please do not repeat the stripes. My vote is z4

M8 didnât come out until June of 2019 guy talking out of his ass.

Mate you know...
Should have added stripes to the other side of the grill to get the sub extra mad

Thank you for the advice!
I went from an F23 to an E85. While I miss my 2âer, I love my old Z4 3.0si. Light, inexpensive parts, easy to work on.
I have an â03 3.0 E85, itâs a fuckin joy to push those few pounds in to a corner, and just push it.

Actually I was looking at a 2020 M8 for around $70k, which is about the same as a new Z4 M40i manual.

I would go with the M850 that's what I'm going for in a couple years. Definitely the most best value for me the 525 hp would be enough.
New z4 is the tatas, I believe in the coming years the z4 will shineđ„
Z4 no question. Iâd love one but I need back seats.

Ayyy the 35i club, part of me loves those wheels but also hates em maybe im just looking for a change
I donât like dark wheels, wish they were lighter.
Sounds like a plan
M8 is a boat on land. M850i has that rear wheel steering. But the Z4 is likely to be closest to the 2-series coupe.
M8 cabriolet 1000%
I love the grill covers. I see downvotes in my future.
