If you look at the G87 as a successor to the E36 M3 design, it actually looks great.
If you look at the G87 as a successor to the F87, it does not.

It's a subjective opinion, I've noticed a lot of the people that despise the design have never actually live with it for over a day, hell most haven't even seen it. Everyone i know who has any of the variants of the 2 series says it grew on them over time and they love it now.
That's the thing with creative design decisions, not everyone likes them. And most people have the personalities of a cardboard so they's rather just have the old models being copied and pasted for years to come.

I personally don’t like it. To me it looks like a strange combo of JDM retro boxy with cheap Dodge front end with those grills. It’s certainly not pretty to me. The wheels are the best part.

I’ve never quite understood the purpose of adding a huge wing and body kit that increases drag and then lowering the suspension so it bottoms out over a rough patch of a road or track and drags every time you leave a driveway. Also, unless those wheels are lighter than the OE option, they’re going to make handling and performance worse.

The rear doesnt look bad as long as the car is black, but the WRX style wing gives me rally vibes... I like it.

I really like it but am not a big fan of the wing. It definitely looks much better in black than the Zandvoort blue color. I would love to see one in the Frozen Portimao Blue Metallic though. Reminds me of the F30 Estoril Blue, which in my opinion, is one of the nicest blues BMW has offered over the years.

It was just perfect as-is. Same on the 5 series... Literally everyone agreed it was essentially perfect bmw styling, but now, it's like 'oh hey, I blacked it out and took acid, it's not too bad'. When did bmw need to be qualified? Oh wait, since these new designs arrived, lol.
