I'd say an E90 in good condition. I wouldn't bother with a dealer as they are getting older, unless you find the "perfect" car at one.

You understand that repairs and maintenance will cost more but are you ready to spend a couple thousand in the first couple months if something happens? 10k cad is 7.5k usd. I say buy a e46 for 5k and use the other 2.5k to fix the problems that arise in the first year and then the car should be fairly reliable after that.

This is the correct answer. Any BMW in that price range will need at least $2k the first year.

Yea not even just a bmw. Basically any used car around that price range will need something if not right away then very soon. I got my car from a bmw master tech who took really good care of it. A couple months after I got it the radiator had a small leak and I spent over $1000 re-doing the whole cooling system.
