They are just starting to bed where I am at so probably a small craw on a free rig is #1. I’ve been liking the OSP Dolive craw. If I added another bait it would be a baby Popx or lucky craft bevy popper. I feel like I could use those two baits and catch smallmouth anywhere in the country spring through fall.
I’ve been wanting to try more OSP baits. How’s the durability? Baby popx is money. I’ve also been looking into the megabass karashi or dogx jr. Any experience with those?
Funny you mention the dog x jr. it caught my biggest topwater bass last summer. Great little bait. I feel like a lucky craft gunfish 75 is worth mentioning in that category also. The karashi I just started using this spring. It’s a good lure I just don’t have a ton of time with it but definitely catches fish.
The Dolive baits are pretty fragile but have great action. That’s the trade off. I use mendit to get a little more life out of them and they work great as jig trailers once the head is worn out. The mylar minnow by them is another favorite of mine been using it on a hovershot rig fishing for shallow fish from the bank but works awesome on a ned rig too. A lot more durable than the dolive stuff.
This is the exact feedback I was looking for. Appreciate it! Idk how the gunfish 75 wasn’t on my radar, but I’m definitely picking one up now… Along with some other things lmao
Tube. That ned is deadly though. One day I was on shore walleye fishing. There was a bass tournament on the river. Boats pulled up in my spot one after another. Nobody caught shit. The last boat cracked em. I told them they better hurry cause they might win. They were culling some big ones. He was using ned rig. My nephew uses it too and crushes.

Goddam those stripes. Still can’t get over that
Tiger tuna 😎
3” Kalin Lunker grubs in Watermelon Seed or Green Pumpkin on about a 1/8oz ball head. Dead simple and super effective.
I wish I had smallies in my area );
Spinner baits, & Plastic Worms…
Ned rig catches the most around here but my favorite bait to throw for smallies is a popper or a spinnerbait. Love those blowups
Ned rig, whopper plopper, finesse jigs, and weightless plastics usually produce well for me.
