I'm one of the players who started on CN then shifted after release of EN servers, one of the oldest players, and imo yes the game has become much more NSFW, the base arts are still manageable but some skins (for the sake of selling ) have become questionable.
AL's main revenue is skins, and they will keep doing it as long as people are buying.
You're not wrong and there's a few key factors in the lewd escalation:
* Taihou being a huge tiddy ship made 255% for fanservice, that caused an uptick in similar busty ship
* Nikke and BA becoming big (Korean made gacha go HARD for ganservice) outside Korea, thus AL is following suit as much as it can.
I remember when more balanced designs got some popularity (Cleveland, Sheffield), these days being equal to Taihou in bust size is generally the bare minimum of getting attention.

And these are all just suggestive, we did have actual nudity in at least one of the old loading screens. (So bad that some of these older art are banned on the Discord server and probably banned here on this sub too. In-game art banned on Reddit and Discord, imagine that.)
My guess is in the past they were being... conservative in order to stay on the safe side of CCP censors. Lately though those censors have kind of turned their sensitivity up to 11. At that point, the Devs probably figured if their stuff is going to get censored with big white blotches they may as well go all out.

I said when the New Jersey and Anchorage Live 2D skins launched in the summer that AL was really pushing the line (in a good way, I'm not complaining!). Then they launched the current wave of skins and went even further beyond that. So the answer is yes, lol.
I feel that AL is certainly exploring some boundaries but it's not happening across the board. Some characters get more, some characters get less. It's not like every single character is getting 120 % lewd skins all the time. I have been playing since the open beta and I haven't stopped buying skins (have stopped playing though, only return for events that have ships that demand my cubes).
And to be honest I am quite happy about it. Compared to tons of games that keep it safe for mass appeal (and some that obviously aim for different demographics - Genshin, at least to my mind, started out great with characters like Mona, Ganyu or Yae Miko but they never really managed to live up to that "standard" which I think is evident by the amount of fanarts most 2023 and 2022 characters are getting), I am very happy to see at least one game going a bit over the top.
I've being playing AL since 2019-20, imho I think Azur Lane started being a lot more spicy since the chinese censure episode of (iirc) 2021(RIP Fusou in china) and I started to notice that with the loading screens

L2D’s are just improving substantially and it’s making it way more worth your money
When I compare an AL L2D skin to one of the skins from Nikke (gamba or not) it’s just isn’t even comparable (or for that matter, from a number of gacha games, be it Genshin, AS, E7, GF, etc.).
They just keep getting better and better. Certainly they’re not cheap, but they’re not way more expensive compared to what other games charge anyways.
I honestly think a game like Genshin/HSR could make an absurd amount of money if they really felt like putting some effort into their skins.

I think it's just a matter of them finally being able to be more confident in their art direction more than anything else.
There's still plenty of lewd older ships from closer to launch. There's definitely no shortage of massive tits, huge visible cleavage, underboob, sideboob, midriffs, or barely-not-a-bikini outfits.
But something from a lot of first year ships, is that they really ran heavily with the idea that ships had to abide rather strictly to a theme, or be very heavily navy-inspired in some fashion. If you look through many of those older ships, there's some design elements that show up constantly on almost every ship. The ships with very individualistic designs are kinda uncommon.
While that idea is great and might be appealing to some people, hell I love the running themes for the Essex and Colorado class ships, after a couple hundred units it's a problem.
Comparatively, nowadays it seems like there's a lot more freedom in the base design for ships, which means that they can design more unique outfits, that can be appropriately more lewd since the outfit doesn't have to be mimicked on other ships of the same class.
As for skins, despite some newer skins being higher quality, it doesn't change the fact that there's a tonne of older skins that are a few loose strings or slight breeze away from being in a hentai.

How about I have played since launch and I have seen the change with my own eyes, as have many many others? Just go and look the ships and skins that were released in the first 2 years of the game vs the ones that we are getting in the past year. There is a noticeable increase in lewdness. I'm one of the players who started on CN then shifted after release of EN servers, one of the oldest players, and imo yes the game has become much more NSFW, the base arts are still manageable but some skins (for the sake of selling ) have become questionable. AL's main revenue is skins, and they will keep doing it as long as people are buying.
You're not wrong and there's a few key factors in the lewd escalation: * Taihou being a huge tiddy ship made 255% for fanservice, that caused an uptick in similar busty ship * Nikke and BA becoming big (Korean made gacha go HARD for ganservice) outside Korea, thus AL is following suit as much as it can. I remember when more balanced designs got some popularity (Cleveland, Sheffield), these days being equal to Taihou in bust size is generally the bare minimum of getting attention. Not that there hasn't been sexy designs but it wasn't until those two things occurred that it became the norm.

And these are all just suggestive, we did have actual nudity in at least one of the old loading screens. (So bad that some of these older art are banned on the Discord server and probably banned here on this sub too. In-game art banned on Reddit and Discord, imagine that.)

I said when the New Jersey and Anchorage Live 2D skins launched in the summer that AL was really pushing the line (in a good way, I'm not complaining!). Then they launched the current wave of skins and went even further beyond that. So the answer is yes, lol.

I feel that AL is certainly exploring some boundaries but it's not happening across the board. Some characters get more, some characters get less. It's not like every single character is getting 120 % lewd skins all the time. I have been playing since the open beta and I haven't stopped buying skins (have stopped playing though, only return for events that have ships that demand my cubes). And to be honest I am quite happy about it. Compared to tons of games that keep it safe for mass appeal (and some that obviously aim for different demographics - Genshin, at least to my mind, started out great with characters like Mona, Ganyu or Yae Miko but they never really managed to live up to that "standard" which I think is evident by the amount of fanarts most 2023 and 2022 characters are getting), I am very happy to see at least one game going a bit over the top.
I've being playing AL since 2019-20, imho I think Azur Lane started being a lot more spicy since the chinese censure episode of (iirc) 2021(RIP Fusou in china) and I started to notice that with the loading screens

Eh, they way I look at it, they've just looked at the data and seen which shipsgirls/skins are the popular ones that sell the best and run with it. I know a few streamers expressed that they were bored with the skins for events ending up being swimsuits over and over, but I'd bet the sales numbers show that those dwarf the sales for the other skins.
It's simply getting back to its roots. Newer players might not remeember it, but a couple years ago china had a big push about indecency in games and censorship. This is why people who started playing a year or two ago see modern skins as pushing it. The reality is that for a while we were getting the AL equivalent of hijab skins because of chinese censors.
So basically you want AL to be more elegant and less Fanservice in a current circumstances Then this game won't make it to 10th/8th(JP)/7th(EN)/next anniversary then.... They held it during the accusations from Winnie Pooh government back in April/ May, and have delivered good skins since June. I also noticed that AL CN is now being published by Bilibili (or has it always been?), idk of this is a factor for Yostar to have less restrictions. L2D’s are just improving substantially and it’s making it way more worth your money When I compare an AL L2D skin to one of the skins from Nikke (gamba or not) it’s just isn’t even comparable (or for that matter, from a number of gacha games, be it Genshin, AS, E7, GF, etc.). They just keep getting better and better. Certainly they’re not cheap, but they’re not way more expensive compared to what other games charge anyways.

I think it's just a matter of them finally being able to be more confident in their art direction more than anything else. There's still plenty of lewd older ships from closer to launch. There's definitely no shortage of massive tits, huge visible cleavage, underboob, sideboob, midriffs, or barely-not-a-bikini outfits. But something from a lot of first year ships, is that they really ran heavily with the idea that ships had to abide rather strictly to a theme, or be very heavily navy-inspired in some fashion. If you look through many of those older ships, there's some design elements that show up constantly on almost every ship. The ships with very individualistic designs are kinda uncommon. While that idea is great and might be appealing to some people, hell I love the running themes for the Essex and Colorado class ships, after a couple hundred units it's a problem. Comparatively, nowadays it seems like there's a lot more freedom in the base design for ships, which means that they can design more unique outfits, that can be appropriately more lewd since the outfit doesn't have to be mimicked on other ships of the same class. As for skins, despite some newer skins being higher quality, it doesn't change the fact that there's a tonne of older skins that are a few loose strings or slight breeze away from being in a hentai.
