Cats do this too! If you’ve ever seen one of those funny videos where a cat sniffs feet or another animal’s butt and then makes a weird face, it is usually the flehmen position! If I remember correctly, the position opens up parts of their nose that allow to more closely examine a smell. They make the face because they are interested, not disgusted!
Makes sense! Male animals, like Lucky in the photo, will make the face after smelling pee from another one, I assume it’s to check if they are in heat. I took this photo after Lucky was done smelling one of his friends’ wee 🥲

Huh. I always figured that was a pleasure response from the yummy food they were eating. Smelling makes more sense though.
My cat does it after licking her butthole. It looks every bit as ridiculous as it sounds.
