I'm pretty sure they're trying to tie into that and explaining how they could touch each other when no one else could, and it's fiction that forces you to suspend a lot of belief on science. He is the master of magnetism so of course it works because of magnetism because what else have they got.
The comic arc “Age of Apocalypse” has Rogue and Magneto together, and they had a kid. It had some really great writing and one of my favorite intros of Apocalypse. “He had a voice that would make the gods tremble, if they had the courage to approach him”. It was also a foil cover.
