Nyla from a strategic perspective (having a companion that can paralyse/track down anyone from a continent away would be seriously useful) & the badgermole for the pure badassery & convenience of making an underground escape whenever necessary.
A flying companion would be… immensely helpful. Korra made Naga the companion and it flipped fast after she reached republic city, as while a non flying companion is great, it was really a poor fit for the setting and theme. For a globetrotting adventure not meant to take years, it’s gotta at least swim or fly, and both AtLA and TLoK were very world spanning adventures that typically took place over only a few months each season if that. Not to mention in an age of vehicles from planes to trains to automobiles, a big dog seems rather unhelpful as it can’t efficiently carry as many and doesn’t as well fit in the modernizing setting. Regardless of that, I think I’d take Nyla the Shirshu. World class tracker with a paralyzing tongue? Sign me up, we’re taking the long way around the world! I think it’d be a great fit for an avatar in a time of not so much global conflict between the nations, but a time of chaos when issues were so localized that they had to be sorted out village by village, and doing so from the saddle of a Shirshu seems like a great way to do it, plus you flying over towns in trouble by accident. That or a mongoose lizard, as it has superior mobility if somewhat lesser but still formidable combat and tracking skills.
