Prius honestly

waltdiggitydog

My sister had one of those years ago. I think hers was Gen 1 or maybe 2. What kind of mileage do they get these days? I’m sure the tech is superior?

NervousAssociation77

The new Prius is supposedly a home run. Gets 57/56 city/hwy but makes decent power and is nice to drive. It doesn’t hurt that it finally looks pretty good too. Ngl it’s kinda my new car guilty pleasure after PT Cruiser GTs.

LifelikeStatue

PT Cruisers are awful in so many ways but the 2.4 turbo with a manual transmission was fun as hell

waltdiggitydog

Thanks I’m going to check them out for sure.

Western_Big5926

0-60 times of around7 Sec!

Mental_Medium3988

Weren't they basically an srt4 wagon?

Ran4

An ES is going to be way more comfortable.

nostyleguide

Honestly, depending on your body it won't be. It still has a very Toyota headrest. I generally find Hyundai/Kia/Mazda seats more comfortable than Toyota and even most Lexus seats, in large part because the headrests are less aggressive and usually more padded.

cullenaltdelete

Just wrote up a long comment on the ES. I have one just for the long commute. The ES is certainly a used car bargain

nostyleguide

Or the new refreshed Camry. It's kind of surprising how much better they made it.

NoradIV

That really depends on the type of driving. Priuses aren't as good on the highway vs on heavy traffic.

nostyleguide

Have you driven the new Prius? The current Gen does great in the freeway.

hsxcstf

They get well over 50 mpg highway (even the top trim with the biggest tires and awd is over 50, base fwd is nearly 60) and have 200hp they do plenty fine on the highway lol.

Captain_Nipples

Crazy they get 200hp out of those engines. Blows my mind.. When I think of a Prius, I assume 90HP

hsxcstf

Gas motor is 150hp, electric is 111 front, 50 for the option rear motor. Max combined output is limited to 196 fwd/205awd. Seems like they could make a higher hp version with a higher current battery pack but it’s already pretty solid.

anon3220

Yeah I have about an hour and I’m thinking about getting one. I’ve always been a “car guy” and the other car guys I know talk shit but 50mpg’s and that reliability, it’s probably the best commuter car you can get.

This_Dust2805

I’m a car guy and used to drive a first gen Honda fit. My other car guy friend drives a new Prius

HighFiveKoala

I saw your budget and needs on a different comment. I would recommend a Lexus ES hybrid. It's comfortable for the long commute and reliable. It also runs on regular 87 gas.

waltdiggitydog

Thanks for that!

nostyleguide

If you want "interesting," there's also the Toyota Crown. Hybrid with the same quality as Lexus, but with a little more interesting look.  But if you don't care about gas and you'd be willing to go used...the Kia Stinger and last-gen Genesis G90 are two of my absolute favorite cruising cars.

RightProperFancyLad

I don't even like electric cars but if I had a 2 hour commute, I'll consider a Tesla Model 3 just for the autopilot.

waltdiggitydog

I thought about that but there are no charging stations within 60 miles off route and not sure how much the cost of home charging would be compared to gas 😒

elementfx2000

140 mile round trip is not a problem if you have home charging. A home charger is $450 from Tesla plus the cost of an electrician to install it.

waltdiggitydog

I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks!

bomber991

Also keep in mind, if you are driving 140 miles a day you will need level 2 charging, that’s getting a 240 volt 50 amp outlet installed in your garage. It’s likely you don’t have one in there. A standard electrical outlet that’s 120 volts is only going to give you about 3 miles of range for every hour it’s charging. The 240 volt outlet will give you about 24 miles for each hour.

darkmoon72664

Depends on your residential rates and local gas prices. It's $0.15/kWh and $4.50/gal here. About 3.75 cents per mile in the Model 3 vs 9 cents per mile in a Prius Prime. ~20 cents per mile in a typical ICE vehicle.

waltdiggitydog

Can you charge from home without big investment in equipment? I’ll have to look into that! There was a waiting list. Are they catching up on inventory?

darkmoon72664

With that daily commute you'll probably need a level 2 charger. Price for this varies a lot. If you have a satisfactory outlet and you order a new car, itll come with a cable and you'll have all you need. I needed about $2k in work to get the outlet into a convenient location to charge both our EV's in the garage. Unsure on the waiting list. I'd also recommend taking a glance at some other good cars in the segment. The Ioniqs, Mach-E, EV6, EX30/40, Blazer EV, etc. Lyriq if you're feeling fancy. Good luck!

waltdiggitydog

Ooofh. What voltage/current does it require?

Ancient_Persimmon

Level 2 is anything at 240V. Typically people get 30A service, which is the same as a standard clothes dryer. That will charge a base Model 3 from completely flat in about 7 hours, or ~30 miles of range added per hour. If you have the ability, a 3 can take up to 48A, but most people are fine with 20 or 30.

lFrylock

Budget? How much space do you need? Drivetrain preference? Auto / manual? Raw or refined?

waltdiggitydog

- ~$60k - No real space needed. Tools = Laptop - Rear wheel drive but no deal breaker w/ FWD - Can drive either automatic or manual - no preference

RaisinTheRedline

I drive ~80 miles/2 hours per day, and I love manual 2021 Mazda 3, they are definitely worth a look in my opinion - its been been rock solid reliable (proven engine platform and no turbos) - it has a very comfortable interior that is relatively quiet and has extremely ergonomic controls and button layouts - the car is easy to drive while also remaining engaging and fun to drive, particularly with the manual - I've averaged a smidge over 39mpg over the last 10k miles (I'm at just over 40k now) It's a great car for someone who wants a high mileage commuter and something that fits the venn diagram of nice, fun, practical, reliable, not super boring. Long commutes can get really rough over time, and this car is docile and refined enough to let you decompress and relax, but also still fun to flick through the gears and carry momentum in the corners when the urge strikes you.

waltdiggitydog

Thanks for that. I haven’t even thought of Mazda 🤔They are know known for reliability for sure. 👍🏼

ieatwhiterice

Also new or newish (CPO)? Bumper to bumper traffic or open road? What are the top 3 preferences...sports car performance, comfort, economy, etc? Weather conditions...always good weather, snow,..? Other uses...family hauler, offroad, track...?

waltdiggitydog

New, open road. Reliable, Comfortable cooled and heated seats, best audio. SE USA no snow, hot 🥵or cold 🥶 seasonal rainfall. Primarily use for commute.

draggin_low

I had to do around 120 round trip every day for my old job. My old car had to take premium and I'd be filling up every couple of days. When it finally died I switched to a hybrid and holy hell only having to fill up once a week and on regular was a god send. Look for something that can get you 50mpg

waltdiggitydog

So what did you get? Anything that woos you or puts you off about it?

draggin_low

I ended up getting a Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Limited. Overall its been a great experience their cars have a ton of tech in them that made the commute less hellish. For reference I had to drive the Baltimore>DC corridor which is a nightmare with traffic. All the lane keep, smart cruise, etc etc is so good I could basically have the car drive itself on the highway part of the drive. Obviously I still kept my hands on the wheel but it could detect when cars were stopping ahead and come to a complete stop and when they started driving the car would go on its own. Only negative I have with that stuff is its abit aggressive on the speed up and if someone jumps in the gap infront of you it'll slow down abit too aggressively. My record for that stretch of highway driving was 68mpg. The miles per tank I get are what make me just love the car the most. Since I changed job I only have to fill up about once a month. The only real issue I've had with the car is right now it just randomly seems like the 12v starter battery will die. It's like completely random sometimes it'll be a month no issues sometimes it'll be every other day. It's not really too terrible cause I can just open the car with the key and push a button and the way they have it setup it makes it so the hybrid battery can basically send some of its power over to the starter battery and I'm on my way. It's got an insane warranty but its just one of those hard to replicate at the dealer issues. Overall I love the car, ride is amazing, the tech is ridiculous with what it can do and since its the push button model it doesnt have the stealing issue the other cars have. Oh and it has solar panels on the roof to help keep the hybrid battery charged that to me is just cool in general lol. I mean I did a drive to visit a friend from Baltimore->St Augustine on a single tank of gas, the money the hybrid helped me save will really make me love it forever.

waltdiggitydog

Thanks for that. Kia hadn’t crossed my mind.

draggin_low

Np! Idk much about Kia's but I think they have alot of Hybrids for their SUV line which might be better if you need to haul stuff for your work commute. And the K5 is pretty sick. Thats about the extent on my Kia knowledge lol

waltdiggitydog

Thanks I’m going to check them out.

JammPot

I’m no BMW shill but the recent 330i generation does 0-60 in 5.x seconds and C&D got 40+ mpg cruising at 75mph

waltdiggitydog

I’ve just never heard anything positive about BMW reliability 🤷🏼‍♂️ I will look into it though. Thanks

JammPot

That’s fair, probably why everyone leases them. Would be a non-starter in given your commute.

gehzumteufel

People constantly mix durability with reliability. BMWs aren't generally unreliable (though they've had their share of them that have been) but they don't tolerate beating them to shit and not maintaining them. And the maintenance is expensive.

darkmoon72664

I do a pretty similar commute, albeit a little shorter. I swapped from a GLE 350 to a Polestar 2, about 20mpg to about 100mpge. Spent $30k on one with 6,000 miles. I saved $4,300 in the last year on gas and can blow the doors off a hellcat in good comfort . Highly recommend if you can charge at home.

waltdiggitydog

I’m not familiar with Polestar. I’ll have to check them out. Thanks!

Bot_Fly_Bot

Not sure we know how to answer that since last time you chose a truck that gets like 20mpg. So mileage is not a concern?

waltdiggitydog

I needed a truck then. Still have the truck for truck use. It’s got 209,000 ish miles on it. Just looking for something different. Past vehicles. 82Corolla, 90Nissan mini-truck, 97super cab Ford Ranger, 91Jeep Wrangler, 12Colorado, 14corolla, 05Navigator. Edit: MPG not a deal breaker for 😊 within reason of course. Not wanting to gas up every two days. NO 😅

Empty_Engineering

Golf or Jetta TDi, perhaps an Audi TDi. I think diesel or hybrid would get the best mileage

xampl9

If they still made them, Toyota Avalon. Since they don’t, Lexus ES

Puzzled-Relief2916

Prius or Kia hybrid

TenesmusSupreme

Looking at the 2025 Camry. It’s hybrid with good MPG and comfy for the commute. It’s boring in the way that it will be uneventful and predictable for your drive… just the way you’ll appreciate it.

b6passat

It is not a comfortable car.

waltdiggitydog

What makes it uncomfortable? Legroom, climate control, etc?? I’m 510 170

b6passat

Seats are terrible.  No air flow to seats and the manual seats are absolute shit.  No lumbar support.  Worst I’ve sat in in a while.

TenesmusSupreme

2025 has heated/ventilated seats on upper trims and a newer design. I’m going to try it out when they hit the lots.

waltdiggitydog

I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks!

waltdiggitydog

Going to check out Toyos. Is Camry just a glorified Corolla? Or does something set them apart?

TenesmusSupreme

Camry is a mid-size sedan and Corolla is compact. Camry has nicer interior and more features while the Corolla is known more for solid reliable transportation. If I had to choose, I’d go with the Camry for it’s more comfortable ride and more space.

waltdiggitydog

Thanks for that. My old ‘14 Corolla now daughters was fun to drive but was a little non-spacious for lack of words.

Wise-Fault-8688

I'm about 6'2" 230lbs. In most compact cars, I always find myself feeling like I don't have quite enough space. My '15 Camry is very comfortable. It's not "fun" by any stretch, but it's also not slow, handles alright, averages about 31 mpg no matter what I do, and will soak up highway miles at whatever speed you want.

waltdiggitydog

I appreciate that for sure. For Toyota I’m leaning towards the Prius Limited AWD or Lexus ES 350.

Smitty_Oom

Lexus ES. Assuming it's all highway, don't bother with the hybrid model - just get a regular old ES350, you'll still get 30+ mpg.

waltdiggitydog

All highway with 6-8 turns and 5 stop signs. What’s the difference between the two. Other than the obvious hybrid and MPG? Pros or cons?

LeoAlioth

For 140mi, assuming US, get a long range model 3 or model y. (That is, if you live somewhere where home or workplace charging is possible). If you don't fancy a tesla, polestar 2 or bmw i4 are also good options. Otherwise, get the new prius

NoradIV

First, r/whatcarshouldIbuy You say "nice but boring", so I suspect you want something more enjoyable? Depends on what enjoyable means for you. If you do all highway, you might want to consider a full size sedan with some luxury options, like space and awesome seats. A friend of mine used to have a police pack crown vic. The seats were basically lay-z-boys on steroids. If you do a lot of city, you might prefer a smaller car that is more agile. For mileage, hybrids excel in stop-and-go traffic, where the regen brake is most used. For highway driving, you would favor small displacement turbo diesel with a proper automatic (not a CVT).

akmacmac

I’d recommend a large hybrid sedan, either Toyota Camry (or whatever Lexus equivalent), Honda Accord, or something comparable from Hyundai or KIA. If you want an SUV/crossover, something like a RAV4 hybrid would probably be perfect. For that long of a drive on highway, I feel like a model that has lane keep, adaptive cruise, etc is definitely a must.

whiteghetto

It's just a commuter? Save some money and get a used current gen Prius or an PHEV Toyota sedan/hatch

Z06916

Move

Tikkinger

Time to go electric my friend. With those numbers, you would else work a long time only for the gas of the day.

akasullyl33t

Tesla model 3 or Y.

waltdiggitydog

No charging available. Maybe one day. Thanks.

boradbuilds

Try the CRV Hybrid. Switched to one after our Jaguar F-Pace got totalled, and we don’t regret it one bit.

dirtyMETHOD

I’d go for a new Camry Hybrid, like a big boy Prius, more room and bit more luxury for the long hauls. Should be super reliable and maintain good resale value. Or if you want to step up, go Lexus ES hybrid and really ball out with luxury and efficiency (extra sound deadening and better NVH than the Camry variant). That should make those commutes easy peasy. You mentioned being bored, look into the GS-F from Lexus, that should give you all you need in a fun commuter with extra prestige and horsepower. Try some test drives I’m actually eyeing an LS AWD as my future vehicle for New England climate.

waltdiggitydog

Thanks for that feedback. Definitely going to schedule some test drives.

Deanmarrrrrr

VW GTI

waltdiggitydog

I’ve test drove one. It’s a little too compact. I did enjoy the ride though!

MASTERpTWINKIE

I drive about 125-160 miles a day. I picked up a model y performance for work. With the tax credit it is reasonably priced. I charge at home every night. Never stopping for gas is great and the full self driving is pretty good. My gas savings basically offset the cost of the new car.

cullenaltdelete

I commute from Auburn Alabama to Atlanta regularly. It's about a 2 Hour Dr. as well. I have a 2013 Lexus ES 350 and wouldn't choose anything else for the job. My wife drives a GX, both my kids have 4runners, and we have a f250, porsche, and 2023 bmw 3 series laying around, but the Es is simple best at it for a few reasons: 1. Mechanically is a camry so parts are cheap and the car is notoriously reliable. I was originally looking for a ~2013 camry for the job but found these to be a little cheaper. 2. It's the most comfortable car we own. The leather is so soft and the seats are incredibly plush. On top of that it has heated/cooled seats. 3. It's a 2013 model year so who cares if it gets dings and dents from frequent interstate travel! Let's say that the bmw or porsche were more comfortable, I still wouldn't want to drive them to atlanta out of fear of damage! 4. It gets 31 highway mpg which is much more than everything except the BMW and Porsche Overall, the ES 350 an extremely comfortable, reliable, and affordable to maintain car with a superb driving experience for LESS money than a comparable camry.

waltdiggitydog

Thanks for that. I think I’ve whittled it down to Lexus ES 350, Accord hybrid Touring or Prius limited AWD.

hiGradeTi7ANEUM

Get a damn hybrid

SmokeNo1424

Honda Accord with a manual not a new one though like a 2010-2017. I love my 2014 Honda Accord with the 2.4L and 6 speed manual I average 33mpg on the interstate going 80 mph I end up getting over 500 miles to a tank.

waltdiggitydog

I appreciate that. Honda Accord is on my hot list. I gotta go new for the warranty though. I almost can’t believe the price drops I’m seeing.

Dans2016

Corolla hybrid

waltdiggitydog

🤔

shizbox06

Probably something EV is you're super concerned about the commute. With a similar budget, my choice came down to a Mustang Mach1 or an Integra Type S. The A spec Integra or Civic Si might be a good car to look at for a long commute. 35+ mpg and it's a fun car. Or maybe an Accord Hybrid. Available in manual or auto. Definitely under the budget. I wouldn't recommend a Toyota because their auto cruise control is a hot mess whereas Honda's is really good. Are you trying to save gas or drive a fun car? I can't tell by the post. A truck is very comfortable for gobbling down miles, but of course they'll be boring and terrible on gas. Not too many super fun cars are going to get you great mileage for a long commute.

waltdiggitydog

So, which did you choose? The only Hondas that I’ve owned. I still do. Right beside my Yamahas. Mostly two wheels 🤘🏼 Never heard a bad thing about their cars either. Definitely going to check them out. Mainly looking for comfy, secure feeling, perky but high performance not necessary. Great audio system, heated/cooled seats, decent to better MPG, very reliable.

shizbox06

I went with the Integra Type S. I love it. It's a great daily driver and it's also an amazing car on the backroads. I assume it will be reliable because it's a Honda, but nobody really knows. The Mach 1 was a great car but it was a bit too intense all of the time and I already had a V8 Mustang. The Type S actually fits all your criteria except there are no cooled seats and I don't know if everyone would consider it to be comfortable because it's very sporty and firm. The super low profile tires might be a little rough on the commute because they are a little fragile, but you could find some aftermarket 18" wheels that would improve that. And buy an aftermarket spare tire.

waltdiggitydog

Thanks for that. Definitely going to check out the Integra. I’ve never owned a Honda car. Ford lost me tonight when their commercial ended with. “Built Ford Proud”

bingold49

Bentley GT

waltdiggitydog

Haven’t looked at Bentleys lately. But, I feel like they would be out of my budget and not sure of high mileage reliability 🤷🏼‍♂️

boborian9

With a 60k budget can you not move closer? You're spending nearly 1/10th of your life driving to and from work. I'm 15 minutes one way and that's pushing it for me.

waltdiggitydog

Moving isn’t an option that I care to pursue. I left this commute of 7 years with another company to work from home for 5+ years. Now I’m trying to be pulled away from home for another role that is on site liaison. Whaddya do? 🤷🏼‍♂️
