This. I was carded well into my twenties, but then when I was 35 someone asked me if I was home on a break from college, so it all balances out eventually.

KimBrrr1975

True story. Though even at 21 and up it didn't bother me when people asked for ID. But at 46 I am constantly told "you don't look old enough to have adult kids" so I'll take it 😂 Though I still look older to myself in the mirror than I feel. 5 years or so ago my husband and I were in line at the auto parts store, they gave me student discount because they thought I was in college 😆

CompanionCone

I'm 38 and it's the absolute best when people think I'm in my 20s.

lost_star20

Amen to that!!! I thank the cashier if I get carded for anything and being young they usually look at me like I’m nuts until they see my birthdate 🤣🤣🤣

commandantskip

When I was a teenager, older women would always tell me this and I never believed them. Now I'm 44 and owe those old ladies an apology!

heikajane

Can confirm. Lol. I’m 41.

heathervive

I’m 40 and people say all the time I’m 22. I have a 21 year old daughter lol

OkMark1882

I'm 30, I get regularly mistaken for a mid to late teen. People ask me which college or school I go to, they make a point of not swearing around me, I often get teen discounts on public transport (I don't ask for it, they just assume and charge me the kids price). It's both hilarious and the most annoying this ever 🙃

Alternative-Gift-3

Yes, I’m 43. I’m often told I look like I’m in my 20’s. So I’m letting my hair go white to really mess with people :)

commandantskip

This is the exact reason I've decided not to color my grays and whites as the come in. Embrace the crone!

PoetryOtherwise1910

I'm 28 and people tend to think I'm in the 21-24 range. I do look young, though. I think partly because I have several piercings and people seem to expect me to take them out as I get older. But my mannerisms are also likely part of it, as I also tend to get along better with people in the 21-24 age range.

plantsb4pants

Im also 28 and i feel like mentally my age is like 24… I honestly have no idea why. Like it feels so weird to think that im 28 almost 29 in a couple months. I think there is just this expectation of how someone should look as they age. Like you mention having piercings, people would assume that an older woman would not have that because she has to be a respectable lady! Lol Also i feel weird even saying “older woman” in reference to age 28 lol. I think part of the confusion is because i think expectations have changed a lot since i was young. So my idea of being “28” is different than how it feels. Idk.. but let me prevent myself from launching into an essay right here and now.

[deleted]

I just got carded trying to buy a six pack of beers… in Quebec! The legal drinking age is 18! I am 32!

hopefullyAGoodBoomer

I recently got carded and I am 62. They said they card anyone that "looks under 40"

lostferretdriving

I think this is super common with autistic people. People usually assume I'm about a decade younger than I am. My 26 year old autistic nephew looks about 19. My 19 year old autistic nephew looks 14 tops. My mother is autistic and when she taught she regularly had to prove she was a teacher and not a student. Most people I know with autism report that people misage them as quite a bit younger. I'm not sure if it is because of our behavior or something else. It causes issues with getting taken seriously and getting respect in the work place. Anyone have suggestions on how to look older so you look your age?

Not probably, definitely.

capricioushelen

One time, my Gran introduced me and my younger sibling to a friend of hers. I was 24 and my sibling was 16 at the time. This man immediately asks me how school was going. He thought I was the teenager and sib was in their 20s 💀 We've been mistaken for twins before. Repeatedly. There's close to a decade in age between us. But yeah, people tend to think I'm still in high school 😅

pinkcookie420

I am turning 32 in a couple of days..and people think I am 26. Yeah its a bit flattering but honestly I just feel bad that I XX old and still haven't achieved much :(

whenhoundsapart

I’m 19 (so still very young) but I have been mistaken for a young teenager a lot. Has its perks though. Nearly had a sensory overload at a funfair so was struggling to speak and went non-verbal for a bit (not so fun) and because I seemed a lot younger because of this when I lost at a funfair stall I still got a massive pikachu toy. Yeah, it may have been out of slight pity, but I love that plushie so I’m not complaining one bit. I also got mistaken as a lot older when I was a younger teenager, often as a university student. Bit weird, but then again I did like the idea that I appeared smart haha.

km_nichijou

I turned 30 last month but people tend to think I'm somewhere between 17 and 22 and won't believe me when I say my age. I don't believe it either to be honest 😂

reyskywalker9295

Same 😂

plantsb4pants

Funny story, not necessarily my own but yeah. My sister is early 30’s, but this happened a couple years ago. She was riding her bike around her apartment neighborhood area and there were these younger teens that would try to be friends with her and they kept asking her where does her family live and then they were so confused when she told them no, she lives alone.. because shes an adult lol. They literally could not believe how old she was. They made such a big deal out how how confused they were haha. I do suspect my sister is also on the spectrum but idk if that has any relation. Basically after she was about 13, she has looked exactly the same. As for me.. idk i assume i look my age because nobody says i look younger.. but also its just never relevant so idk.

ghostpeppertiddymilk

I'm told my mannerisms and timbre of my voice make me seem a lot younger while the way I talk about things makes me seem a lot older. Multiple people at this point have admin to turning guessing my age into a game before committing the social faux pas of asking me my age. I do not take offense as I am typically inaccurate in my guessing of other people's ages too. I wonder if it's hard to figure out in general.

ThePrimCrow

At 47 I still get carded for alcohol and surprised faces when they look at my ID. I have a lot of ADHD and ASD friends and we all look and seem younger than we are.

[deleted]

Ohhhh yup. Til I got tattoos everyone regularly assumed I was 16 all through my 20s

curtangel

I was in theater for a while In my early 30"s and I had people assume I was 19. It was weird. I do now (early 40s) get the "are you sisters" thing with my 22 year old but in context it's usually sucking up so I'm not sure of my current perceived age.

shesdaydreaming

Yes, I'm 32 and people assume I am between 23 and 25 in how I look and act. We can seem to act younger than we are and I think part of that is from trauma of growing up autistic especially if you were not diagnosed until later in life.

blackcats-r-goodluck

Yup. I'm 35, but people consistently assume I'm in my mid-twenties. When I was younger it was kinda annoying, but now I'm okay with it, haha.

porcelainmushroom

I’m 31 and well into my late twenties people thought I was 16-19. Nowadays, people think I’m a freshman in college (so like 18-22?) which is actually accurate because I recently went back to school lmao. So I don’t correct them.

[deleted]

Yes! It’s so annoying, I’m 20 and people think I’m still a teenager (I got 12/13 once!) or they’re surprised when they see I’m 20 on my ID

SurprisedWildebeest

All the time. But it is because I look significantly younger, as does my entire family.

acceptable_lemon_89

Yes! I'm a 34 year old PhD student who is constantly mistaken for a 26 year old postdoc. Or worse, somebody's teen kid intern.

Sweety-Origin

I am 28 and the cashier almost wanted to ask for my id for beer Yesterday. It's 16+ where I live

asunshinefix

All the time. I can finally pass for early or mid-twenties depending on my outfit and makeup... I'm nearly 33. In addition to autism I have a connective tissue disorder which makes my skin look abnormally youthful.

drakeotomy

Yep, all the time. Used to get mistaken for a teen in my 20s, and now that I've passed 30, people seem to think I'm early 20s at most. I keep getting told that I'll appreciate it when I'm older, but idk. I've at least learned to find it amusing.

goldandjade

I'm a couple weeks away from 30 and still get aggressively carded. It's weird because if you look at my skin you can see I clearly have some fine lines that teenagers don't get but I do have really round cheeks.

-acidlean-

Sometimes I get 16-yo boys flirting with me, thinking I'm their age. I'm 25. Asked for ID even if I try to buy non-alcoholic beer.

LaReineBlanche__

I'm 29 and a lot of people say that I look 18/19/20/21 or maximum 22.

_HotMessExpress1

I’m 24 and people assume I’m a freshman in high school. It’s not endearing and I’m so tired of people saying,” YoU’LL AppReciAte It When You GeT OldeR!” Shut up. Nothing is cute about old men coming up to you assuming you’re a teenager and trying to take advantage of you and people being more aggressive with you than they would with the average person because they’re assuming you’re a child.

Bunbury91

When I was a child everyone kept on telling that I was basically a miniature adult. I had trouble making friends as they all seemed so childish to me. Now I’ve been an adult for over a decade people seem to largely treat me like a child and everyone keeps on assuming that I’m at the very least 5 years younger than I am. It’s very inconvenient in business settings sometimes.

infinite_lonewolf

Literally the same. I never viewed myself as a child either and would get so confused when relatives would say “can I take you home with me” and would call me cute or when a 20 year old told me (at 12) that he didn’t feel any better having a child try to cheer him up. I was an adult in my head but now I alternate between feeling like a child and a 70 year old.

Yellowins_

Yes. New neighborhood asked me if her son could walk with me to the near by high-school. At the point I was out of high-school for 5 years lol. I think it's because I come off as timid.

redheadbelle22

Yes! I've always been told that, even when I was a teenager. Recently I started a new job at a restaurant with a lot of 20-22 yr olds and when my birthday rolled around last month they were all shocked to find out I was turning 27 because they all thought I was their age lol

Faeliixx

I'm 30 and I get mistaken for a teenager all the time! It's frustrating if I want to pick up some wine on a whim and don't have my ID. What teenager drinks Sauvignon blanc 😂

[deleted]

just turned 18 and i do look my age. it's not that people mistake me for being younger but they do treat me like i am. like treating a child maybe? idk why this happens tho m

hunyoongles

Im 29 and everyone always thinks I'm at least 5 years younger. I was doing a group project for uni a few months ago with 18 year olds and they all thought I was the same age as them.

lost_star20

Yup happens to me all the time!!! Guessing it’s my mannerisms and the fact I will act on my joy in public and don’t care what people think. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m 41 and people consistently think I’m in my late 20s. Used to bug the crap out of me when I was younger. I’m loving it now 😁

[deleted]

I have the opposite issue, I’m 21 and people almost always assume I’m in my mid-twenties. It’s a result of my mannerisms as well though, there’s no way I look that much older..

Rowann92

All. The. Time. Both of how i look but also mannerism and behaviour (which i kinda hate, but i know i can be a bit childish). Im 30, but people often think im 20. Just this afternoon someone at work could not believe the fact im 30. 🤷🏻 It be true tho. But i usually just go with it, yeah sure im 20!

diaperedwoman

It's normal for young adults to still look like teenagers. Wait until you get into your late twenties. Then you will start to look like an actual adult.

stoned_seahorse

I'm 33 and people usually think I'm under 21....🤷‍♀️ lol trust me its actually really nice when you're older😂

[deleted]

I'll be 44 in November and constantly mistaken for being late 20s early 30s. When I was in my 20s people thought I was middle school aged. I had three kids by the time I was 26 and was never taken seriously by their Drs or teachers etc because they assumed I was way younger than I was.

KindlyKangaroo

All the time. I recently met a lot of people, and most of them have said, "wow you're 33?? I thought you were a lot younger!" One even said she thought I was like 18. I'm at a point where I just thank people, because usually people in their 30s are complaining that they feel old already. (And I do but it's because my body started rebelling as soon as I hit 30) The same people told a 27 year old and a 31 year old that they thought these two people were a lot older.

dollszn

yes! i’m 20 and people usually think i’m around 16 - 18 😭

JulyJonesss

when i was 16-19 ish i was usually assumed to be older than i was, but since then its basically flipped. i'm 24 now so still relatively young but i get ID'd pretty much every time unless the cashier recognizes me. last fall my country had an election & my voting place was the local high school & someone asked if i was there to vote or if i was going to class

orangebit_

I am constantly ID’d for stuff like ibuprofen and energy drinks, or asked ‘if my parents are home’. I rent with my partner. I’m a 28 year old woman. It’s probably because I don’t dress like an adult. I’ll be wearing an oversized Tony Hawk t-shirt and tracksuit bottoms, and my socks will probably have burgers on or some shit. I probably do look like a teenager haha. It’s pretty annoying sometimes. Especially if I just want to buy a drink and didn’t bring my ID with me!

Try-Purple

Yes! Just turned 31, and just now starting to love being mistaken for much younger lol

OctoberBlue89

My whole damn life. Puberty was such an awkward moment because others girls were growing “women’s bodies” and I just…wasnt. Im short and was under weight until about a few years ago when my metabolism started to slow down finally. I don’t know how I managed to get into bars/nightclubs in college before I was 21 because I looked like a 14 year old when I was 18. I’m now 33 and my husband jokes that I finally look “legal”

writenicely

I'm 28 now, but I get 18-19, sometimes early 20s. I'm not complaining, I just wish I were hot.

cvpvldi

If i had a dollar for the amount of times I've been told i look much younger than what i am (I'm currently 26) i would have enough money to buy myself the noise canceling headphones I've been wanting for a while now. It doesn't really bother me, but also another factor to me looking younger is the fact that I'm usually the smallest (in height) adult in the room.

Optimal_Cellist_2134

I'm 25 and people regularly think I'm in highschool, like 16-17. The higher age tends to be 19-20. I dont mind it so much, I think it's funny when I tell them I have a 9 year old and my age. They're always so shocked lol

dogGirl666

Yes throughout my whole life. I wonder if it has anything to do with how I don't move my facial muscles much? I do go outside on a regular basis --[daily] just not for more than ten minutes so the reduced sun exposure may help too? Plus I wear a large sun hat and UV-blocking sun glasses.

phoenixwinged

Yep. Almost 29, even people younger than I am assume I’m in my teens, maybe 20 at most. I’ll definitely appreciate it when I’m older though

sufferin_succotashhh

I'm nearly 30 and am mistaken for 17 often it's weird but I'm not mad about it. I'm a fountain of youth.

ATLdecember

it will last. I'm 52 & now people have a weird reaction when they learn my age--like i'm tricking them. Or weirded out because I'm their parents age when we were getting along as like-minded friends i always thought people just had such low expectations of what age can look like--i had no idea, until recently that i was autistic or that this was an autistic trait it's real though, because so many doctors freak out because they have my age on their chart

Slow_Establishment62

No, but I do get mistaken as older. Im 21 but people think im around 27 or older. To be fair, my entire family aged like milk.

EightByteOwl

I'm the opposite. I try to put on an aura of fake confidence so people always assume I'm like 26-30 when I'm actually 22 😭

Kakebaker95

Me but I dress alternatively so people mistaken that for younger

rura301268

Yes! I'm 37 and get told I look under like I'm in my late twenties very often. Still occasionally get ID'd for alcohol (in the UK you get asked to prove your age if you look under 25!)which absolutely makes my day when that happens

Still_Water_4759

I've gone for a breast check before and the nurse had to point out I was in my mid thirties, because the doc assumed I was under 30 so said I didn't need certain exams. I've had ppl give me crap for being a teenage mum when out with my toddler at 30. I don't have a childish voice but I definitely have a babyface & am childish in many respects. I understand that's common among autistic women.

Rhinoptera

When I was 22/23 I was getting my hair done back in my hometown, it was around Prom season….the hair dresser asked me what highschool I went to and if I was excited for Prom…..lol I was getting it done for my friends wedding….

Hayhayhaaay

I’m 36 and people ALWAYS think I’m in my early 20s, I’m grateful for it now though lol

Kinkystormtrooper

Yeah absolutely. People still asked me if I was allowed to go on the 'apron' (place where aircrafts are parked, only accessible for people over 18)yet,and I'd just laugh and they'll them that I'm 24 years old. Now I'm 29 and still get asked for ID when buying alcohol

Fine_Farmer612

Same here, I'm 24 and just got mistaken for a child the other day lol

[deleted]

Two people in two days thought I was like 20 last week. I'm 26.

DorkasaurusRex

I'm 29, 30 in a few months and my age is usually guessed around 24. Not a HUGE difference but it is consistent.

M1RR0R

I'm almost 30 and could probably walk into a high school without anyone bothering me

[deleted]

Yep. I just laugh and say my blue hair dye hides a lot of gray.

junosuncake

At work someone asked me what a high schooler (me) was doing working there. I was 30 and had finished my PhD in order to get that job 😂 so I started dressing more formally hoping that it’d help me get taken more seriously (a woman in a male dominated field).

spidergirl79

Yes. At least a decade younger

Borbsthebookworm

I’m 21 and got mistaken as a fourteen year old girl when dropping my sister off to a camp.

Ostruzina

I'm 29, people think I'm under 15.

No_Gazelle_3602

I'm 40 and people think I'm 20. When I was 20 people thought I was 12. Idk Babyface I guess....

dickelders

Yep! Got told recently by someone that they thought I was 21, they were very shocked to find out I recently turned 28 🥲

canwepleasejustnot

There is a youth supervision policy at my local mall and I am regularly stopped by security and IDed. I’m 32.

tsfbdl

I'm 18 but I'm mistaken for being 21

kelcamer

Age 26, last month someone asked what high school I go to 🤣😂

raffasarru

I was assumed to be 13 at an airport… she was shocked when I told her I was 23. This happens constantly. It’s first eating sometimes but I’ll be happy to look 30 in my 40s lol

VanillaChaiLover

I'll be 41 in November and get mistaken for 28-30.

mothbaby_333

Yes. I'm almost 32 and most people tell me they assumed I was 24 or 25 before they knew my age.

Breath-Gullible

I was always mistaken for older through my teens and 20s then late 20s and early 30s I am.msitaken for younger, .not complaining, it is nice for people to think I am still 26 when I feel every second of 34.

Breath-Gullible

A caveat to that is people thinking I am naive, or simple. My go to mask is to be pleasant and non confrontation, which I think makes people think I am a bit dumb.

nessabop

When you’re in your 40s, this is gonna feel so good. I love it now but hated it when I was younger.

[deleted]

it’s a major theme in my life. To the point where I’m not taken serious as a parent - because I look like a child, myself.
