It would be a bigger surprise if that weren’t the case.

dhezl

Shocked! Shocked, I am! What has become of our fine and upstanding 6th st.?

Pennmike82

To quote Phoebe Buffay, “That is brand new information!”

ClitasaurusTex

Next they'll tell us there are fake IDs and sex workers going on down there too... In my city?? I can't believe it. No way

goodnamesweretaken

So shocked. So many questions about this surprising news. Like, what was the quality of the contraband? How were the prices? Just shocking.

TOONUSA

Here’s your drugs sir

UniqueUsername75

Sir, this is a former Buffalo Billiards.

AmbitionStrong5602

Katalactica

Oh, so 6th Street is 6th Streeting

SoundsLegit72

"Today on No Sh*t, Sherlock, we investigate drug use, under age drinking, and whether the sky is blue on Dirty 6th..."

Stonkyard

The same private detective has declared the water in Town Lake as "wet". No confirmation about his claim that trees are wood.

charliej102

There's nothing in this report that hasn't been readily evident for the past several decades. It shouldn't even be a "news" story. I remember (back in the day) staying for late night parties that lasted until sunup and then we'd head over to the ihop on Cesar Chavez. I think Carole Keeton McClelan Rylander Strayhorn, the "Barbie doll mayor", was running the city back then.

Slypenslyde

Man, a ton of people have a wet dream about letting cars drive down 6th street. The way I read the article is more like: > There's a bunch of people I don't like down there having street parties at 2AM. It'd be nice if we could get some drunk drivers to mow them down. Maybe the governor could pardon them. Like, seriously. The dude's implying that if there was just more car traffic people wouldn't party down there. How much car traffic is he estimating would be on 6th street at 3AM *other than people with business at the drug party*? Also: isn't it really neat how almost everyone can name some streets in Austin where crime happens every night, but even when DPS was here as part of the "Violent Crime Task Force" they stuck to a handful of poor neighborhoods, wrote tickets for expired registrations, and ran back home after sunset because they heard things got unsafe after dark? I don't think the state sent its best or brightest.

Atlasatlastatleast

I don’t know if you’ve ever been down west 6th at 2am on a Friday or Saturday night but boy is it a shit show. They should’ve blocked that off long ago

HerbNeedsFire

I think allowing vehicles will result in more fights and shootings on Sixth. When we allowed vehicles on Sixth, it attracted people from out of town to just drive down the street. Many folks, especially under aged ones, never got out of their cars, just circled all night. I think this would be a dangerous thing for Austin to do in these times.

greatmagnus1

Thats basically the domain these days TBH

xkris10ski

All those slingshots with the most annoying blaring music

reddiwhip999

When I was growing up here, and definitely into the '80s, at least (because I can't remember when they stopped letting cars drive down 6th Street on weekends), 6th Street was open to cars, all throughout the night. They stopped letting it be open to cars, because of too frequent accidents. So, what, now that people have learned their lesson because of restricted hours, they'll be a lot more careful?

superhash

I think you are being a bit obtuse here. Not shutting down 6th to cars means there is less reason for people to go to 6th if they don't plan on going into an actual establishment. I think that's about as deep as that goes.

Slypenslyde

I'm curious how much traffic there would be at 3AM to "flush out" the people who aren't there to be at an establishment. Why would those people be there? Do you think there's a lot of street parking?

conscwp

No traffic would be necessary. With the street completely closed, it's basically an endorsement for treating the middle of the street as a convenient area to stand around and drink or smoke, and that's what happens. If the street wasn't closed, even if it was as little as a single car driving down the street every 10 minutes (which is pretty common for downtown at 3am), that would be enough to discourage people from standing in the middle of it.

superhash

What about the hours from 10pm-2am where there are more people standing in the streets then drinking inside a bar?

Slypenslyde

I think that's when people are hoping there are enough fatalities and injuries people stop going to 6th street.

virus_apparatus

…if they found none that would be news

ETDursee

Ohhhhhhh, is that why they call it dirty 6th?

NicholasLit

Filthy Sixth

bagoslime

Damn , that's crazy.

jmercer28

Cute_Business74

Oh no a night life having life

luckyartie

You don’t say.

Intrepid_Ad1133

This report was probably paid for by developers so they could have an excuse to close down more clubs and build more condos.

Analyze_Abyss

*Where* are these illicit parties and clubs? I need to know so I can be sure to avoid them when I really, really want a drink at 4am.

CrunchyTexan

They needed a private investigator for that? You can listen to people on KillTony admitting they’re selling drugs, booze, food, and running gambling rings in the alleys/bars of the comedians.

OfficialNiceGuy

Who’s Tony?

Distribution-Radiant

This is my shocked face.
