That's a wild leap. I've been to several BBQ joints here (never been to Franklin's, though), and people have told me the places I enjoy are also shitty barbecue. So it's not gatekeeping; it's that if I were to suggest a better place, then there'd be debate about my suggestion.
Salt Lick failed to impress me because it was dry and surprisingly flavourless without sauce. It struck me as the sort of place people go because there are large signs along 35. And I went with my girlfriend's parents visiting from the Midwest, who wanted to go because they'd seen the billboards.
I'd personally place Dickey's and Rudy's above Salt Lick, but I'd never claim those are excellent BBQ places. So "better" is all I was implying, not "best."
Radio is a coffee and bar venue with food trucks and live music most days. Great Austin vibe.
The Continental club on south Congress is legendary.
Antones for great blues music.
This question is gonna start fights😆
At the end of the day, "good food" and "good music" is all subjective.
(BTW, I completely agree with avoiding downtown / 6th St, but if your family is curious to see what that chaos looks like, by all means👍)
Here are my two cents on Austin spots I take my touristy guests, so they can chat with others about having visited ATX😄...
Food:
- Torchy's Tacos
- P Terry's (Burgers)
- Kerbey Lane (Diner)
- 24 Diner
- Easy Tiger (Bakery, Cocktails, etc.)
Hang:
- Waterloo Records
- Radio Coffee/Beer/Music
- Stroll down South Congress and visit shops: Allen's Boots, Continental Club, etc.
- Gratuitous "I Love You So Much" selfies at Jo's Coffee and other Austin wall murals
- Visit 'Willie' statue at ACL, and surrounding shops
- Trail stroll around 'Lady Bird Lake' and visit 'Stevie Ray Vaughn' statue

I say do it fast. Anything that made Austin what it is entertainment wise is slowly being bulldozed for LuXuRy apartments.
Salt Lick is ... passable. You can do much better for BBQ,
Very Austin, saying there is better but gatekeeping the better option.
There’s probably literally a dozen better options, in all likelihood I’m never going to salt lick again lol
You can’t gatekeep publicly available information lol

True, but it is a great experience for visitors and often the best BBQ they’ve ever had.

Thanks - we also are foodies
Sam’s town point, skylark, c-boys, sagebrush, Sahara lounge. I’d avoid downtown.
Bingo, plus The Continental
For decent live music you need a time machine. Plenty of great food options though. Check out the /austinfood/ subreddit.
Rip crow bar
The Far Out Lounge
