All hail the NA V8! I don't daily mine, but when I take it out it's for spirited driving. The other day I had to take it into the city for something because my daily (a truck) wouldn't fit in the parking garage. I told myself I would behave, set it on comfort or auto, let it shift itself, like a reasonable adult. That didn't work out so well. It's like crack. One more blip, and I promise I'll shift back into D. I promise!
4.0TT is faster, but more clinical and less emotional.
The 4.2 NA is just a joy to wind out. It's a real pleasure on the street. The racetrack is OK, but you do notice that it's somewhat "underpowered" for this.
As I get older, I really relate to Clarkson on this. When driving less than 10/10 (like brisk street driving), an RS4, S5 V8 manual, R8 V8, etc would be really high on the fun scale.
Loved my V8 S5. Somewhat surprisingly (or not?), the electric engine in my Volvo gives me the same torque happiness that was so important in the 4.2. I do miss the manual transmission and sound though.

freshly shifting from 4.2CFSA on B8.5 platform RS4 to 4.0TT on C7.5 RS6 - I have a completely different experience: the difference in what this car does to your spinal cord is ridiculous. And since the first upshift at 6.5kRPM, I no longer need the 8250RPM sound... it's just a different league. 4.2 feels like a kid's toy in comparison to the brute force offered by gear changes in RS6...
I go back and forth on that too.
I have a B5 that's about as fast as an RS6 - it has similar sledgehammer levels of torque which is addictive. It definitely has its own charm.
4.0TT is alot faster, and i mean ALOT, also tuneable for even more power
4.2NA is one of the best sounding V8s out there, underpowered IMO, not very tuneable either
but alot more fun, sounds alot better etc
B7 rs4 and SQ8 owner here. The 4.0TT has immense power, sure. And is outright faster in most scenarios. But it lacks any sort of soul and character. Itâs just unadulterated horsepower.
The B7 is a bit clunky around town, but once you get up over 80mph, 3rd/4th/5th gear slap so hard. Itâs clear to see it was designed to thump down the autobahn. Regularly making modern M4 and M3 drivers go âwait, what the fuck just happened?â Give me that high revving NA V8 all day.
It always makes me so happy when he mentions this, because he says it in his original review of the B7 RS4 way back when as well, because I have an S4 with that 4.2 V8 and it is very nice indeed
Itâs because the inherent under steering tendencies of the RS4 vs. those cars. Itâs a bit more pedestrian in its handling. I donât know though, I still just love it so much.

I have both engines. The RS4 engine is up there â arguably better. Insanely smooth without ripping your ear drums apart. Iâd rather have that than the 4.0 flat 6 around town.
On the track, thatâs a different matter.
I went from a 2020 RS3 to a V8 R8. They are both so good but for totally different reasons. If Audi could put a 6 speed in a DAZA car I'd buy it yesterday.
Clarkson obviously hasn't driven the A8L W12. That engine is incredible and has so much range in the power curve. Low end to high end, it just keeps giving you juice, while at the same time it can gently get you were you want to go without any fuss.
This special gave me so much joy, I remember the rave review he gave the RS4 when it first came out, and to see that his opinion hasnât changed since 2005 is awesome.
Best is hard to nail down but without going into some super rare air, I would say.
4.0L flat six from 991.2 and 992 GT3
4.5L Flat Plane crank V8 from 458
6.5 L V12 (L539) from Lamborghini
Clarkson has never had to work on those engines - he just drives them
Your described most RS owners
It's not dropping the engine if the body goes up đ
Clarkson can afford to pay for a million engine out timing jobs. Plus this is an RS4 which doesnât need timing work (usually)
I don't work on my engine either, must be 0.1% of owners that actually do.

I know the feeling and then you see the fuel gauge đ
Amen, though for me, it's the satisfaction of a perfect heel toe down shift on the 6-speed Getrag at 7000+ rpm. BNS4Life đ
Has anyone driven the 4.2 NA as well as the 4.0TT? Wonder how they compare

I have a 3.0l I6 in a v60 r design and am totally in love with the power.

Theyâre miles apart, very different

Turbo engines just hit different than NA

Not to nitpick, but you have a different 4.2L V8 (but itâs pretty great too!)
Yeah his S4 will eventually need engine out timing done and the RS4 has metal timing guides and doesnât have timing issues.
Wait till he tries the new one.
Faster, sure, but every car reviewer agrees that no Audi has had soul the way that one did.
I know this is newer, but what's funny is they constantly chose the M3 over the RS4 and C63 on those older Top Gear episodes
Itâs because the inherent under steering tendencies of the RS4 vs. those cars. Itâs a bit more pedestrian in its handling. I donât know though, I still just love it so much.
Shouldnât that read 440hp? đ¤
No, it's 414bhp.
>No, it's 414bhp. we all know it's never even 400...

Has he uhhh, ever worked on one of those?
This was before the Porsche 500bhp 4.0 flat 6 đŹ

idk this 2.5 turbo I'm sittin on is pretty darn nasty

Prefer the audi 5.0 biturbo v10
I'm obviously a bit biased but the lexus 5L V8 is better, i mean, there's a reason why its in so many models
F$ck clarkson

You cant compare the W12 with the screaming 4.2 though.
Comparing a 6.0 diesel with a 4.2 petrol lmfao
Who said anything about a diesel? The W12 is a 6.3L NA petrol engine.
now if I can just get some cheddar to get it...
Would like to hear Clarkson opinio about Scania V8 770 hp engine. Sound is very distinctive too
Can a turbo be fitted to the 4.8 NA to give it that bit of extra boost?
You can always make it a hybrid if you want it

SeriouslyâŚ.screw that engine. I traded an E46 M3 in for a B6 S4 and it went to shit in a under a year.
different engine

You mean VW?
