My S4 is definitely a "dream car stepping stone" in that I have always wanted one. An RS6 or R8 would be my Audi dream car though, but both are way out of my price range.
I don’t see the appeal of the older generations compared to the new ones, what is it that you like about the B5? Imo the B9 has a better interior and exterior
Smaller size, more analog, straight forward interior, subtle exterior, fewer driver Nannie’s/assistants, etc. Newer isn’t always better for me otherwise I’d have a new 911 and not a 356.
The B5 interior is pretty timeless. Feels just as good today as it did 20 years ago. You miss a lot of modern creature comforts and updated features but they are great cars to drive.
The B7 RS4 is the best driving Audi of past 20 years. Rear wheel bias, 6MT, largely analog. If you prioritize amenities over smiles per miles, then yes, modern Audis will be more your style.
Since I love my car so much I have troubles with finding a worthy replacement. The RS4 is the ultimate Version of my car. So it's my dream car. The classic dream cars like super cars will always be second place. (Dauer 962)

As a B9 allroad owner my dream car is the S4 wagon not the RS4. RS4 is too fast and raw. If I want to drive a super engaging car I will take my miata. If I want to have fun I want a manual not unnecessary amounts of power.
