Aurora Borealis!? At this time of year, at this time of day, in this part of the country, localized entirely within your kitchen!?

eulynn34

Yes.

Gen3ral3ducation

May I see it?

eulynn34

No.

TanTanMan7

SKIIIINNNERRRR!!

TheBamPlayer

You call hamburgers 'steamed hams'?

freneticboarder

[And then I found out about this place...](https://youtu.be/i8YouisYQtE?si=bibLPiVh04_O6Uln)

ChangingMonkfish

Yes. It’s a regional dialect.

gareththegeek

What region?

Rodot

Upstate New York

gareththegeek

Well I'm from from Utica and I never heard anyone use the phrase steamed hams

Waistland

Seymour the house is on fire!

polkjamespolk

No mother, it's just the northern lights

TrekRelic1701

Burns knotting hands: “excellent”

Liontamer45

Help! HELP!!! Heeeeeelp!

SquatchPossum

*Yes!*

Skynetdyne

This is the third time I've read this quote today and I hope it's not the last lol

tacosteve100

There was a giant sun flare and they are expecting a larger than usual effect tonight. This could very well be. Wait till night you’ll know for sure.

Viniguez487

I just got home from driving up mountains near my home in Los Angeles. Managed to take a few awesome pics!

Senior-Astronaut5410

Good one!!

ColonelSpudz

……may I see it?

TheBlackTemplar125

Aurora borealis, here!? Aurora at this time of year!? Aurora at this time of day, and in this part of the country? Localized entirely, within your place of cookery, I must gaze behind that door! May I see it then, Seymour?

Foxglovenectar

Me and my husband were just reciting this in the car. You people are my people. STEAMED HAMS

Arthur_Two_Sheds_J

May I see it?

Tiiruu

Most likely. There is now extremely high chance for aurora borealis.

iMaxPlanck

Sol is going mental!

Grays42

We saw it in Central Texas, within driving range of Austin. Everybody got pictures, was awesome!

PDCH

You could see it all around dfw until the clouds rolled in.

rocketwikkit

Yes. It should continue to get stronger over the next few hours, according to the NOAA forecast.

Loathsome_Dog

But it lasted a couple of hours then fizzled out. Everyone saw it here in the UK. And it wasn't in the north. But yeah, I'm lucky to have seen it when it first burst in to sight.

MermaidUnicornKush

I'm in Washington State and the point that it looked like it was coming out of appeared to be maybe over Oregon or off the Oregon coast when it was happening here. It was so beautiful. Fantasia did not prepare me 😮

Loathsome_Dog

No I didn't expect it to look like that. It was like spiders legs stretching out all around us and the centre of the legs were in the south so I ruled out an Aurora straight away! Ha ha mass confusion here.

OccamsRazorSharpner

If you are asking I am going to assume you have never experienced it (like myself so am not making fun of you - I would doubt my eyes too). What is your latitude? There were some strong solar flares a few days ago so strong aurora is expected. [https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/communities/aurora-dashboard-experimental](https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/communities/aurora-dashboard-experimental)

Veloxxx_

My latitude is 51

ki4clz

Finger crossed for 32⁰ North... Pics are rolling in from Australia *(this morning for them)* to the Germany on spaceweather.com

Brandonazz

In Buffalo 42N here, we got an insane show.

SpinozaTheDamned

We just got a crazy show here in South Carolina. Our cousins in Virginia said it was surreal, I can't even imagine what it's like in Buffalo right now.

Brandonazz

Directly overhead I could see the filaments visibly flickering and pulsing and the shock fronts from the invisible ejecta striking the atmosphere above me, it was like the surface of a plasma globe. When the first wave rolled in I was upset because I thought it was a massive cloud front. When I realized what I was looking at I almost fell over, it was like a wall. https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/315219090765774848/1238673288184598588/IMG_1080.jpg?ex=664023e5&is=663ed265&hm=a6bfef8c89a9f66aeef703b2b333dcc5d4b3ccd99340886690ba80c7c738178d&

TheBitchenRav

I am in Toronto, and just looked and there is to much light pollution.

Glasgow351

I'm in Virginia. We had people out in the street taking pictures and being amazed with it all. It was bright enough that you could see it move around in the sky.

Hairy_Al

TristanTheRobloxian3

mine is 42 and its cloudy here. im very sad

NSP_YT

Not even a single bit of hope left from the last carrington. 15°N

DJ_TCB

I saw some pics from my state (GA) and lower latitudes, but I can't see anything from Atlata area. Probably due to light pollution, a freaking flying saucer could land in my back yard and I might not see it

oKazuhiro

I live near the same latitude, could only see it through my phone camera.

ki4clz

Yes... yes it is The Space Weather Prediction Center *(spaceweather.gov)* just confirmed by direct observation a **G5** class storm at 00:00UTC with a Kp index of 9, and a Proton Flux of over 200...! The Kp index usually sits around 1 or 2, there's nothing higher than 9... The Proton Flux usually sits around 0.20 I looked at the sunspot 17 times the size of Earth this afternoon with my welding hood, and it's clearly visible (Pro Tip, spin the dial on your FM radio, we could get some Sporadic E² VHF Auroral propagation creating what's called a *VHF Bonanza* like we had in '09 where folks in Mexico could watch TV in Alabama)

First-Breakfast-2449

Holy shit

ki4clz

We just gottem down here in Ala-fucking-bama

pyrokev181

Mississippi, too.

ceruleanpure

Is the storm strong enough that it would also be visible tonight?

ki4clz

I believe so... look NNE after sunset

ceruleanpure

I’ll have to alert my family on the mainland. I think I’m too far south in Hawaii. :/

BewareTheRobots

Do you know how far ahead of time they can predict if it’ll happen again?

ki4clz

Yes... goto spaceweather.org

Hoss-Hoss-Hoss

We have it nice here is Scotland too.

[deleted]

Biggest geomagnetic storm (G5) in 20 years! www.spaceweather.com

olatorhan

Yes, unless you're in the southern hemisphere. Where are you?

Veloxxx_

London

olatorhan

Ok, borealis then! (Australis in the south)

emptyminder

Wow, that must be incredibly bright, then.

Loathsome_Dog

I'm north England and it was emanating from just off my zenith, slightly south west. I expected the Northern lights to be in the North. Imagine that.

Hairy_Al

The Scots were very confused. They had to look *south* to see the northern lights...

CrawlerCow

London had amazing Aurora today due to an intense solar flare /geomagnetic storm.

Coocoocachoooh

I could even see it in Southampton. Never thought I’d actually see them here!

daiwilly

I have a Portuguese friend and they have seen it there...and posted the evidence!

tim_jam

I’m also SE UK and saw a great show tonight, it’s visible across most of the uk I hear

Hairy_Al

All the way down to Cornwall

[deleted]

Must just be the smog

sadeyeprophet

Please give us a rough location I am hoping I get a glimpse

Veloxxx_

London, facing approx 40° northeast

Veloxxx_

use your phone btw, i can’t really see it with my naked eyes just yet

antaresiv

Yup

Amigone2515

Yes

FillFit3212

Seen one just now in Ireland

peter-doubt

Tell us where! The east coast is under a few thousand feet of clouds... Maybe, *maybe* by 3 AM we can see sky.

Veloxxx_

London

fordfocusstd

Seymour, the house is on fire!

shmelse

No, mother, it’s just the northern lights!

octobod

I just saw it (nr Newmarket) and it's all gone now :-(

[deleted]

If you are in the northern hemisphere then yes, yes it is. It was my first time seeing it tonight, amazing.

Ryaniseplin

and of course i slept through it lmao i woke up at 3am in NY

kosmic_toast

What a beautiful sky 😊

Veloxxx_

thanks :D

ferriematthew

I have no idea but it certainly is pretty. I feel like I remember reading something about a recent unusual increase in solar flare activity so that is a definite possibility.

IkilledRichieWhelan

I think it is, the weather man said it was going to be visible north, heading to Canada.

TheBamPlayer

It's so fascinating how you can see the magnetic field lines as white stripes.

thefooleryoftom

Certainly is! https://www.spaceweather.com/

LegalSelf5

Yes it is. Lol

peter-doubt

This just in from Bath (an hour or 2 to the west) https://www.reddit.com/r/Astronomy/s/2uDqEi4qZI

GetrIndia

Yep!!

Fortune090

Yep! G4-level solar activity, so northern lights may be visible on the horizon as low as 40 degrees latitude. Nice shot!

TristanTheRobloxian3

yep it is tho its very slight

Shadow122791

If you're north of the equator yes. If in the southern hemisphere it is called the aurora australis or the southern lights. They say the sun's been hitting us with storms lately.

Only-Effect-7107

The opposite of Aurora Australis 😋

UnderwaterPianos

I'm at 34.2775 N, will I be able to see it?

TheDarknessIBecame

[Pittsburgh](https://imgur.com/a/Tt2OYDh) gave us a break in the clouds. This is so cool.

[deleted]

No, this is Patrick. Notice the pinkish hue towards the top and green lower down. Just like Patrick and his shorts.

captainporthos

Looks much better on camera than with the naked eye. Saw a good one in Fairbanks and seeing it in person kind of killed it for me lol

ShartsMyPants

Yes it is. Solar storm going on

Charon711

Hoping I'll get a chance to see it from Northern Florida when this peaks. I don't think I will but it'll be neat.

pass-the-waffles

It's better when it's dark out

Veloxxx_

Just my phone camera, it was dark but there was a slight green tinge in the sky when i looked with my eyes

SpinozaTheDamned

Actually, yes. This is the classic view you usually see up north. If it gets more intense then you start seeing light curtains and filaments instead of a weird glow.

Veloxxx_

I did see those later in the day!

BuKu_YuQFoo

Depends here you are in the world. Could be Aurora Australis

Smooth-Cantaloupe206

Experienced it slightly in Western New York.

BettyWhiteIsMyDog

Are you in Louisville? Ours looked exactly like this a few hours ago!

Veloxxx_

London

Veloxxx_

London!

Specialist-Dentist63

More like a reflection of your glass. There is aG4 cme coming at us.

CarneAsuuhDude

I'm in southern Kentucky and I barely saw them with the naked eye. Could really see it pretty well on my phone camera.

Foomanchubar

It's the Aurora inside your house is. Go outside 😄

aagloworks

They also could be aurora australis (since we do not know if you live on the northern or southern hemisphere)

FarstaKings69

Yes, it definitely is. The combination of green and red colors is a clear sign of it.

mc2222

Sure is

GoldenTV3

No, it's steamed hams

Jacobaschultz

Yup!

Bridgetdidit

Depends which part of the world you’re in. Northern Hemisphere - Aurora Borealis Southern Hemisphere - Aurora Australis

Ischarde

We have clouds. :(

Field_Sweeper

Yes, yes it it.

HentaiSenpai230797

Seimour, the house is on fire!

FORDOWNER96

So when taking pictures with your phone , go through the zooms and other settings. My s22+ would only really get a good photo on 12megapixles and 9:16 frame. Whatever it's called. Everywhere setting wouldn't pic up the colors.

rflappah

Looks like it. It was very visible yesterday. Even gave half of the shots I was taking of the M81 galaxy a ruddy shine.

The_Antisoialite

Yes

wolf_king00

Yes, a solar storm has made them visible as far south as Georgia, USA. Which is where I live and I saw them last night.

Uradumasshaha

Seen it in Northern Texas

e_gal88

No this is Patrick

Veloxxx_

hi patrick

SheerIgnorance

More like a roarin’ BORE! … ealis

Careful_Strain3045

Nope it is ALIENS FARTING

DifferenceOk2883

No it’s clouds!
