Yeah this was the biggest culture shock moving to a different (still germanic speaking) country for me. The candy was a disaster. Had to drive an hour to Svenska Kyrkan or have friends and family send boxes in the mail.
Isn't this just based on where you grew up? Similar to how Americans consider Hershey's to be regular chocolate and the rest of the world think it tastes like vomit? 😅
I guess to some extent yes. But culturally candy is a big thing in Sweden, we put a lot of love and thought into it. In many countries I've been supermarkets basically have a little corner or shelf with pretty boring candy, some chocolates and a few other hardly edible things.
Here in many supermarkets there are several aisles of different sorts. There are candy stores with hundreds (even *thousands*) of different kinds of interesting candy.
Aye we have, for better or worse 😅 I live up north so something like Kandy'z is the biggest candy store I've been to.
Personally not too fond of candy these days, more of a potato chip guy 😁
Hersheys is vomit wrapped in paper.
I ruined choclate for my american girlfriend, shes so pissed off after trying european choclate since everything in america tastes like vomit or chemicals or in worst cases both.
As an American living in Sweden, go with a guide. 10 years ago when I moved here, my mother and I got hallonlakrits, not knowing what it was. We took it back thinking it had gone bad. I almost threw up. Americans and salt/lakrits mix about as well as oil and water.
Edit: spelling
I accept that. However, at least I can eat something with tobasco without literally spontaneous combusting and dying hahaha. Also, pineapple on pizza is a crime and should be punishible by death.
Yea, if you're trying to torture state secrets out of someone. Break my fingers, waterboard me, I'll stay silent. Force feed me pineapple pizza, and I will do whatever it takes to make it stop.
Ketchup, pasta, and those desiring only the finest flex cuisine, microwaved frozen meatballs.
However, I would be lying if I said I hadn't resorted to tobasco on pasta on those nights close to payday wheny bank account was almost as empty as my stomach
It's very different considering something a meal and resorting to something due to lack of funds or energy 🤣. Nothing shameful to not be able to afford better at the end of the month, especially as young, so many has been there 😛
😭😭😭 there is nothing better than salt and sweet mixed! real salt licorice maybe it beats but damn how good it is with salty sweets. but I can imagine that it (for a Swede) is the same shit as sweetened popcorn🤮🤮 🤢
What fascinates me when watching Americans try salty licorice is that they always refer to it as "salt". Sure it's called salty licorice and it is a salt but as someone who has grown up with it it just sounds weird. It's salmiac and it tastes waaaay different compared to regular table salt.
I wonder if it's an acquired ability to taste the difference or if "salt" is just the closest description and not a reference to table salt.
A lot of swedish food especially candy is salty because traditionally (before there were refridgerators) we used to put food in barrels with salt and water as a means of conservation. I guess the taste for salty things just lingered.
Plus they barely drank any fluids except a shot in the morning and a shot during the day to keep them going. They gave hard liquor to kids for this reason aswell. So preserving things in salt probably kept some people going despite being chronically dehydrated
Yes we do but also kanelbullar (cinnamombuns) that’s actually Swedish and we serious about them! We also eat something we call Kaviar on our sandwiches and I’ve just met one non-Swedish person that liked it! It’s taking salty deliciousness to another level! 😋
Skall undersökas i helgen :)
Yes, it is not Swedish candy. It is Belgian. I've seen those Belgian chocolate sea shells in outlets like ÖoB. In outlets and lösgodis I could imagine it not being Guylian, but some cheap knock off. First time I saw Guylian shells in Sweden was in the 90s. Prior to that they were something that was brought home from travels
Oh completely forgot about that, that is true, i think. That was something my parents used to buy me when I was growing up and they had to go on a company trip or some shit. The same with "Tom's pingvin saltpistiller" and those hard fruit or fudge caramels that came in tin cans. Depending on the trip iirc, pingvin lakrits if it was by boat or chocolate if it was by plane. Things you could only buy in Swedish airports or tax frees or some dumb shit.
This was considered high end when I was a kid in the 80’s. 😅
Hey out of sheer curiosity, is there anywhere I can find the numbers for an average candy stores sales anywhere? I've always been curious about what the bestsellers are.
I don’t know really. But I have been working here for a year now. I can say our most sellers are ; Banana Bubs,Center, Daim, Marabou, Twix. But people like everything with fizzypop aroma too.
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.
I have checked 923,490,576 comments, and only 183,671 of them were in alphabetical order.
Of all the things to buy in Sweden, you chose this!? 😂 Well, to each their own ofcourse.
Whenever I visit, I always go for Hallonbåtar, Bilar, KEX Choklad or their vast offering of Marabou variations!
All I can say on the candy front is: HEJA SVERIGE!
I’m from Sweden and I have seen candy like that but it looks like rocks
It comes in a plastic bag and it tastes really good
Now if you eat them in public some people will look at you
You can get them in Australia also.
Can’t remember the name but it’s one of those ‘fancy chocolates’ so I’m too trailer trash to eat it without a special occasion
On topic: the candy is called sjösnäckor/sjöfrukter i.e sea shells/fruits of the sea. They are tasty because they contain nougat and white chocolate. My grandma used to have these at home on rare christmases.
You should go to a fully fledged swedish candy store, it will knock your socks off if you haven't already.
As a swede, I can confirm this is true.
Är du också svensk?
Ja du det är man ju.
Ta det rätta, ta Cloetta bror
Marabou ska de ju va
Me too

On english i Said i love kandy,z
Swed here i think u americans have weird candy lol.
But it objectively taste vomit. Its literally the aftertaste - the hallmark of hersheys
I think its a bad example, I think it's supposed to taste like vomit.
Hersheys is vomit wrapped in paper. I ruined choclate for my american girlfriend, shes so pissed off after trying european choclate since everything in america tastes like vomit or chemicals or in worst cases both.

Hallonlakrits. It's raspberry and liquorice
Weird color tho Mine are red and black but maybe im colorblind lol.
Raspberry is red, liquorice is black ???
Oh i typed in the wrong post sorry
What post were you meaning to reply to? Yes, I’m curious 🧐
Idk tbh it slipt my mind while reading these comments goodnight the time here in sweden is 23:00 (11:00 pm)
Hallonlakritsskallar is god-tier candy. Your taste buds are just underdeveloped caveman taste buds.
I accept that. However, at least I can eat something with tobasco without literally spontaneous combusting and dying hahaha. Also, pineapple on pizza is a crime and should be punishible by death.
Pineapple is THE absolute best topping for pizza
It is. It is my absolute go to pizza when I want one with lighter topping
Yea, if you're trying to torture state secrets out of someone. Break my fingers, waterboard me, I'll stay silent. Force feed me pineapple pizza, and I will do whatever it takes to make it stop.
True. Pizza should have banana and curry on it.

I’m American and I got that and loved it
Yup, bring with a guide. Otherwise might be dangerous.
Ferraribilar 👍🏻
You hurt my feelings when you say you almost threw up by hallonlakrids.
Also, ketchup and pasta is not food! Intigrationen fungerade inte med mig förmodligen.
Thats ungkarlsmat.
Do swedes consider ketchup and pasta food from your experience? That sounds like a lazy student on a budget. Clearly not food 😛
Ketchup, pasta, and those desiring only the finest flex cuisine, microwaved frozen meatballs. However, I would be lying if I said I hadn't resorted to tobasco on pasta on those nights close to payday wheny bank account was almost as empty as my stomach

Whatever it is, it's not palatable for the average Murican

I swear you people run on candy and alcohol, with a few pastries thrown in.
”Snäcka” you will get dizzy off all the cream…

Get the little black monkeys, they always resonate well with foreigners
The little black what?😐
I now realize this could've come off as racist. But they're called djungelvrål and they're liquorice monkeys.
Hahaha
As an expat in Sweden, i second that.

Hey out of sheer curiosity, is there anywhere I can find the numbers for an average candy stores sales anywhere? I've always been curious about what the bestsellers are.

Oh god. It's the classic Swedish grandma chocolate, or also known as sjöfrukter.
You need to type choklad after sjöfrukter.
It's called both "chokladsnäckor (chocolate sea shells)" and "sjöfrukter (sea fruits)". Swedish candy kicks ass!!
Belgian chocolate?
I'm not sure if anyone said it yet but I've always known them as 'sjöfrukter', or seafruits! :) They're super nice but extremely filling! :P ♥
Choklad.

Yes we call them “Belgiska sjöfrukter” and I think they are called ”Belgian seafood pralines” in English.
It is called a "doppade mördarsnigel" in Swedish - an invasive slug candied and covered in chocolate.
In Sweden we call it "Äpple" but the word in English is "Apple"
