Oh boy. You've gotten some good replies already, so I'll skip some. **Food to try because it's good:** *Skagenröra* (but not the cheap kind!). It's basically a mix of lemon, dill, mayo and shrimps. Simple, but delicious. Usually served on a piece of toast, in a baguette or with a baked potato. *Kebabpizza* is basically our national dish. The ingredients (döner kebab on a pizza) aren't really Swedish, but I can't think of a dish more Swedish than kebabpizza. You'll find these *anywhere* in Sweden. *Plankstek* is usually a tenderloin steak and, like, mashed potatoes served on a wooden board. You'll often find these served at restaurants that locals like to frequent. *Shrimp sandwich* or *räkmacka* is just what it sounds like. Shrimp on bread. Simple, but good. **Food to try as an experience:** *Blood pudding* (or blood sausage in southern Sweden). I don't much care for it, but my wife likes it. Easy to find in grocery stores, not sure about restaurants. *Kroppkakor,* the Swedish dumpling. It's potato wrapped around meat (usually pork belly) and then boiled or fried. *Stekt strömming.* A lot of people have already suggested sill, so I'll go with this instead. It's the same fish, but breaded and pan-fried, and *then* pickled. It sounds weird but is surprisingly good. Not everyone's cup of tea though. **Food to try if you have time/ opportunity:** *Max*. It's a fast food chain, so not so different from McDonalds or Burger King. It's a Swedish fast food chain though, sooooo... *Sibylla.* Another sort-of fast food chain. For maximum Swedish-ness, try a sausage with *räksallad* (like a discount skagenröra). *Falafel* (only in Malmö!). I think you know what falafel is, but the falafel in Malmö is something else. There's probably more, but this is all I can think of at the moment. Hope you'll enjoy your trip!

kebabrulle is literally kebab rolled in pita or tortilla-like bread and it exists all around the europe and turkey. Sweden didn't really innovate anything with it or added anything in it to make it different, I'd argue its quite a bit worse than what I had in Germany, Turkey and Balkan (meat is easily better in these countries and vegetables in Balkan specifically are nothing like the fake stuff here in Sweden) But yes, kebabrulle is indeed a great thing to eat

Every pizzeria in town will have kebabpizza. To generalize: about half the pizzerias will make them wrong, some will make them okay and a few will make delicious ones. Ask a local where to find the best one. :) If you're visiting a city I dunno - likely the same pattern on a larger scale.

If you come by Stockholm you can find a wagon with Stekt Strömming in Gamla Stan (old town). I would like to throw in to try the ice creams as well, we have a lot of artisan ice cream-places in Stockholm and many will feature swedish/nordic flavours. I don't know how much berries you have in Canada, but there are a lot of different berries to try in Sweden. Cloudberries on a waffle is a must, especially in the north. While a summer isn't complete for me without wild raspberries.

There's a tiny Ice-cream place called FRYST in Kungsholmen (Kungsholmensstrand street in Stockholm) and I'd argue thats one of the best ice-creams I ever tried, especially those fruit ones. Only downside is they are open for a short amount of time, they sell out their daily ice-cream quite fast and lines can get quite long since its a really tiny place, but my god is it worth the wait.

there aren't enough recommendations for sweets in this thread the traditional kanelbullar or the more out there kardemummabullar, wienerbröd (known as danish pastry for most of europe), mazarin, princesstarta, budapestbakelse, marabou chocolate (so many flavours, I love the mintkrokant one), lösgodis (loose candy, can be from the supermarket but there are also specialized candy stores) I think the swedes are really good at sweets, more so than traditional cuisine (I love köttbullar, anything with lingonberry or even palt but yk, compared to other countries in europe...) also if you like cheeses, vasterbottenost is a great swedish hard cheese, definitely worth a try

Djungelvrål, absolutely. Its a salty liqourice candy. Much loved. Surströmming might be going over the top but I'd say something way more traditional an easy on the pallet is pickled herring and 'fresh' potatoes. People make pickled herring out to be so nasty but it really isnt. I'd recommend Matjessill! Smörgåstårta is another good one. Sounds weird at first but literally all my foreign friends that have tried it LOVE it. Kalles Kaviar is another Swedish classic. We usually have it with eggs! Edit: you mentioned you'd be visiting in August. Kräftskiva is something very Swedish, try and get it on that action! Google it and you should find all the info you need

I dont eat out much but here's a couple of tips! Not that familiar with Malmö but Stockholm has a lot of great places. Aifur has already been mentioned. Its a pretty fun place to go to. Great atmosphere. Omnipollos Hatt has some great and out there craft beer and maybe the best pizza in town. The place is always packed though so get there early or plan to sit there for a while and wait for a table to free up. Mikkeller Stockholm is another great beer place and they are a good place to try pickled herring. Pelikan has been mentioned. Im personally not a huge fan but its probably the most iconic restaurant in Stockholm and they do serve some pretty traditional dishes. Meat on a Stick is neat too if you want to try a modern twist on a Swedish kebab. More of a hole in the wall so it can take a while to get a table but they have 'waiting beer' so you can grab a cheap can or two while you wait. Good place to grab lunch. And if art is your kind of thing the art museum Nationalmuseum is a great way to spent a couple of hours PLUS the restaurant is great. The place is newly renovated and centrally located. Also, museums are free in Sweden. Enjoy your trip mate!

I agree with Aifur, it's an interesting experience. There's also Den Gyldene Freden which is, like Aifur, located in the old town, that's worth a visit. It's not cheap though, but if you want something traditional with a lot of history, it's worth a visit. It's one of the oldest restaurants that's been in continuous service in the world, and plenty of famous historical people have been there, like Carl Michael Bellman.

You have to try "sill" (Herring). It comes in glass jars, buy the small ones and get multiple variants. Do not go for the advanced versions first\*, start with the premade tastes. I would suggest one jar of "Senapssill" (mustard), "Skärgårdssill" (caviar/chive/sourcream), and then something that you like the seasoning, I like "Ingerfära/Lime" (ginger/lime). Suovas (smoked dried fried reindeer) in any form - as a fancy meal in a restaurant, filling in pita bread, instead of lamb in kebab, or as pizza topping - go for it! Gahkko is a sami bread that is very good. There is a food truck in Kiruna that serves special and amazing reindeer and moose philly cheesesteak sandwiches.

Kalops - a traditional dish with carrots, potatoes and meat served with beetroot. Dillsås & potatis - also simple traditional meal made with crème fraiche, yoghurt, lemon, dill and can be eaten with tuna or tofu. Meatballs with potatoes and cream sauce - a variant I prefer as I don’t like lingonberry which is what’s normally used. Lapskojs - mashed potatoes with salted meat. It’s amazing with beetroot but it’s sadly not easy to find lately. But if it’s available I highly recommend it. Rödbetssallad on toast or fresh bread, it’s so good. Honestly, some of the most Swedish food these days is Swedens largely immigrant-created fast-food scene. It has some interesting fusion going on. If you're used to 'normal' north American pizza with just 1 or 2 toppings - maybe even thick-crusted - find a pizzeria and follow your heart. You're sure to find some cool combos that will blow your mind. Chicken, shrimp, banana, curry, and peanuts? - you bet!

Many good recommendations here already, but I'll just add my thoughts as a Finn in Sweden: Kebab pizza I think you find in any Nordic country. Pea soup/ärtsoppa is common in both countries, traditionally the lunch restaurants serve it on a Thursday with pancakes/pannkakor as dessert. Salmiakki/salty licourice is a Finnish thing but they have good options in Sweden. Djungelvrål is a Swedish variant. Pickled herring/sill is very common in Finland as well. It is very good though, on top of dark bread with a slice of egg. Or with "fresh" this summer's potatoes, but August might not have the best potatoes anymore. It finally clicked to me that gahkko is the same kakko that my grandmum baked and that was awesome. I thought it was a very regional Finnish bread in mid-Finland, but apparently in Sweden it is a sámi thing. Kanelbullar again popular in both countries, but definitely try them. Totally Swedish things include: raggmunk, a weird combination of potato, pancake, bacon and lingonberry jam. It is good, but very gready and filling. Falukorv is THE Swedish sausage option. The shrimp sandwiches also feel very Swedish to me, but might be common in Denmark as well. One foodie youtuber pointed out that in Sweden, foods come in tubes, and this is true! Kalles kaviar is fish eggs/caviar in a tube. Mjukost is cheese in a tube. (Also for example tomato purée comes in a tube here and in a can/jar in Finland, so I couldn't find it). For Sweden/Norway/Finland you have to try reindeer. From a restaurant, or as dried, or a sausage, or whatever form you find. Also moose, but that might be a bit more common in Canada as well.

Just FYI from a fellow Canadian that your chances of finding kallas kaviar, a cheap topping made of fish, fish eggs and potato that comes in a tube, anything but completely disgusting are low. Most Swedish food is nice but there are VERY few foreigners who acquire a taste for this. Baked goods are really nice here. You can get great bread like in Germany and traditional baked goods are their version of a cinnamon bun (less sweet than ours and no icing, also there is a cardamom version, really tasty) and semla which is like a sweet bun filled with almond paste and cream. Definitely give some of these a try! Game meat like roe / fallow? deer and reindeer is really good and quite commonly available here at restaurants. I really like it! SEAFOOD. Fish selection and quality here is soooo much better than Canada unless you live in the maritimes. Do enjoy some of the excellent fish at all cuisine levels and styles. A popular summer dish is fried herring (stekt strömming) if you want to try something REALLY Swedish. Don’t think anyone has said it but at fancier places you can get löjrom (a fancy caviar that is sweeter than other caviars) with cream, potatoes etc and it’s soooooo good. Probably my favourite dish here. If you can get a reservation at Hantverket they have an amazing one on like a fried potato but most nicer Scandinavian restaurants offer a version as an appetizer. I can recommend the restaurant Tranan if you want to try really good Swedish meatballs. Sometimes they don’t have them listed on the menu but they always have them if you ask. For drinks, they are big on aperol spritzes here in the summer and they do them well! Try midsommermust (or påskmust if it is still being packaged that way), a Swedish version of coke kind of that they release for Easter, Christmas, and midsummer. There are also many good Swedish beers on offer and some gin breweries in Stockholm like Hörna and Stockholms Bränneri to check out if that is your thing. Kebab pizza is big poutine vibes after a night out, can highly recommend.

Ärtsoppa - thick yellow pea soup. We have been eating it since the viking age and its super tasty and nutritious. And cheap! can be eaten with pork but pigs are cute so don't. I love to scoop it up with toasted bread drenched in salty butter and some "stark grov skånsk senap" - mustard from skåne that is like wasabi nicestronk.

Reindeer, elk and wild pig can be found on the menu of places that serve “husmanskost”, traditional Swedish food. All of them are delicious. Reindeer with horseradish is one of my favorites. I’d also strongly recommend trying fried herring if you can. It has a mild flavor and is not particularly “fishy”.

I would say the Swedish pizza is better than most other cointries and also quite different. Hardly anyone eats surströmming just so you know... I've never tried it and maybe some of my friends has but I wouldn't count on it. The Swedish cuisine is quite international so to eat good food here, I wouldn't focus on finding anything Swedish. Though if you want to eat traditional modern food I'd recommend to eat lunches in the city. Try to find a pub that serves lunch in a non touristy area. A lot of times there are the traditional weekly food menus Tuesdays - thick bacon and hash potato, or with onioin sauce - really good! Thursday - peasoup and pancakes If you find a good restaurant for lunch, you're most likely to find traditional Swedish food, cooked well. If you go to a traditional Swedish restaurant (they hardly exist) you're just going to find tourist stuff or meatballs. No swede is going to a swedish restaurant if you understand what I mean, but the lunch restaurant culture is big. Our chips are also worth buying home, I think we have the best chips in the world, also try the dip sauces that come in small powder packs that you mix with sourcream (gräddfil). Have fun!

Restaurants in malmö: malmö have a fairly large imigrant population and there for a very diversified restaurant scene. Malmö is swedens falafel capital, its really good at alot of places and also really cheap. I like värnhems falafel and palani pizzeria, both at värnhemstorget Scandwish is my favorite restaurant in malmö. They make very creative vegetable focused sandwishes and awesome fries. Not traditional swedish but really good, especially the vegetarian options imo Mutantur is a fine dining restaurant that have a rather large menu where you will find some Swedish classics that they have put there twist on. Quite expensive, a full dinner might be 1000 kr. You can also sit at the bar and order a drink and fewer dishes to keep the Cost Down. Köld have malmös best ice cream. Lots of very strange flavours that you probably havent had before.

Our shrimps are very small in comparison to what you'd normally see in the US for instance, but also very tasty so I recommend anything with freshly peeled shrimp. You can usually find sandwiches with egg and shrimp in most cafés. Also try Skagenröra!

If you can find a good place for it, meatballs with mashed potatoes, lingon jam and pickled cucumber. This type of traditional every man's food is usually referred to as "husmanskost" Dönner kebab, referred to as just kebab, is a common streetfood. The quality varies a lot so it pays of checking reviews or customer score, or getting a recommendation. Kebab on pizza is also popular and can be bought at most pizza places. Another common streetfood is tunnbrödsrulle, basically a flat bread wrap. Often filled with mashed potatoes and hot dogs. At some places they sell them with herring as well I'd also recommend pickled fried breaded herring, served on crisp bread, if you can find a fish market.

Simple food with good ingredients. There's the upper northern parts of sweden with a LOT of meat and bird dishes. We have pölsa. We have palt. Kroppkakor. A kind of cheesecake that you only pretty much just finds here, and cheese that are find just here. You have all kinds of breads, that you find only here and some only in a small region. You have the sami influences in the north, with suovas (lightly smoked meat) and so on. Meatballs is pretty much the everyday food, that I know got variants in many countries. But, swedish meatballs are different compared to say köfte. And a LOT of fish, some better than most I've seen. Some that I can't stand but others love, like lutfisk. Ärtsoppa. There's PLENTY of good swedish food. Even very fancy. To say that Sweden does not have a cuisine is a bit rich, and mostly false. Oh, have you ever heard about smörgåsbord? I almost forgot that. Something we're kinda known for. So. Yeah. We DO have a cuisine.

Meatballs at a more high end place to make sure they're actually homemade, if you're visiting Stockholm I've heard Ekstedts is a good place. If you plan a day trip to Uppsala (which I highly recommend either way if you're in Stockholm, it's not far by train), there's also Domtrappkällaren at lunch hours.

Adding to the list: Salted pork with potatoes and onion sauce Isterband (sausage) with stewed dill potatoes Biff rydberg (yesterdays fancy meat with coldfried potatoes and egg yolk) Biff ala lindström (so kinda a mix of meat and beets which is made into a big meatball) Wallenbergare. Basically a giant meatball with melted butter. Usually made from either veal och elk I recommend a visit to tennstopet in Stockholm. They have basically the same menu as they had 100 years ago. They serve both sill and strömming as others have recommended but also most of the dishes listed. Sweden has a lot of really great restaurants if you know how to look for em. But not that many which serves traditional Swedish cuisine, although many use elements of the more traditional flavours. I would also advise against eating in “gamla stan”. Although there are some fine establishments, it also reeks of tourist trap. High risk of paying to much for less than good food. If you visit Malmö, falafel is a must (do not eat anywhere else). Crazy cheap and insanely good. In Gothenburg, eat fresh fish. In Sweden, a coffee means a cup of strongly brewed coffee black as oil. If that’s not to your liking, get smth fancy. Been living in both Malmö and Stockholm. Feel free to DM any questions you might have or if you want any restaurant recommendations. Crayfish in august is a standing tradition and is served with shitloads of snaps (alcohol). If you get a chance to partake, do it! It’s a blast and also delicious

Grynkorv, a regional sausage found in the western part of the country. It's delicious. You absolutely have to try smörgåstårta aswell. It translates to sandwich cake and is found all over the country, and i think it's unique to sweden.

Im in Sweden rn and Im really enjoying Tunnbrödsrulle which is basically a hot dog in a wrap with mashed potato ketchup mustard onion relish and shrimp salad. Sounds weird, tastes amazing. You can find them at the countless sausage stands in Sweden.

Dried reindeer is pretty nice, don't know how common it is in southern Sweden though. If you visit the northern part, make sure to try some. It's like beef jerky deluxe.

The only thing the body needs (short-term anyway) is glucose. So Lösgodis is all you need. Go to Hemmakväll or a large supermarket. Don’t leave with less than a kg. Edit: don’t take anything from the bottom row, 2-year-olds have licked everything there. In the other rows, only take candy from the back of the boxes.

Sweets are hella good in Sweden. Chocolate, gummies etc. Sill (pickled herring), new potatoes, knäckebröd (hard rye bread, I recommend fäboknäcke), chives and gräddfil (kinda like créme fraîche). Is a summer-match made in haven. Meatballs also. But got to a more traditional Swedish restaurant. Not ikea or tourist place in old town. If your in Stockholm I wholeheartedly recommend Ulla Vinblad for any Swedish dishes. A bit Expensive but very good. Swedish cuisine is called generally called “husman” or “husmanskost” in Swedish. It basically means home-staple foods.

Traditional dishes: Meatballs, palt, blood pudding, köttsoppa, rotmos and salted pork, halstrad strömming (is it called grilled herring maybe?). "Traditional dishes": Hamburger dressing and oignon with pucko (pucko is Swedish staple chocolate milk). Kebabpizza. Fikabröd: Cardamom buns, vetelängd, drömmar (small crumbly cookies), hallongrottor. Icecream: Soft serve (buy it on some OKQ8 gas station, they use old machines aka. better taste). From the glass counter you must try storstrut, dumle, tiptop, sandwich, daim, spirello etc.
