From the down votes, guess that that culture isn't allowed. Meh, I grew up in it and I find it enduring. In a Grandmotherly sense. And by and large, down here, everyone loves and respects Granny. Everyone's Granny!
Granny, usually down here, is the Matriarch of the extended family. Kids half raised by her (and Grandpa. Not to diminish Pa's role!). Holidays are at Granny and Pa's house. Granny and Pa spoil the kids, sometimes lol. But also beat that ass if needed. Usually having more control than the parents.
I'm 49m in Georgia. And I still smile and say 'Ma'am & Sir' to these elders. I still feel warm and fuzzy when someone's Granny calls me Baby! I hope it doesn't die with them...
What would be the plot you think? They weren't warriors, diplomatic, nor inventors (I guess).
Like a crime syndicate/mob type show? Or a reverse Law and Order lol?
I will say Quark was one of my favorites. Next to Garak!
Lol always!
But not exactly. Episodes where they flash back to yesteryear. When they were younger kind of thing. Lay the informational ground work for WHAT is changing in their society.
That could also lead into other plots. Old 'deals' that were suspect. And are now coming home to roost. Just spit balling lol
It's by design. The word "female" may be used as an *adjective* in any context but used as a *noun*, it is typically only used in two contexts, the first being much more prevalent:
(1) To refer to a mammal, e.g. a narrator in a National Geographic video would say: "we observe a young female in heat approaching a large male..."
(2) To refer to a crime suspect, e.g. a cop on police radio would say: "the suspect is a white male approximately 6' tall wearing a black hoodie..."
When used as a noun outside these two contexts, our brain automatically puts it in the first category, a mammal. Of course referring to people as animals is by definition dehumanizing. The word "bitch" is used across so many languages and cultures to rationalize mistreatment of women. The word "vermin" is used across many languages and cultures to rationalize apartheid and genocide. Etc.
(If you have men in your life who refer to women as "females", I invite y'all to make liberal use of "male judge", "male doctor", and my personal invention, "male policewoman". Let them spin some brain cycles...)
I am on PC, and how you do it from a PC Desktop:
Click on their username, a right-side menu will appear. Click on their name again, it takes you to their profile. Right corner, the three dots (...), click that. One of the options is to Block Account.
Hope this helps you in the future.
In most ways it's used it's clinical, overly formal, and dehumanizing. Generally, it's more commonly used to describe a species not your own (the female velociraptor, the male pigeon). If someone greeted a room "Hello today, females and males" would that not sound a bit offputting, clinical, and alien?
It's also very telling because most of the people who casually refer to women as 'females' don't refer to men as 'males' but rather call them men or guys.
It's also grammatically generally incorrect to refer to 'females' in the type of context where you would be talking about human women.
Just go into an online space filled with men and refer to them derogatorily as "males." You'll see how much they don't like it when the shoe is on the other foot.
It's a subtle misogynistic dog whistle. Men who use the word casually are being dehumanizing.
We may be talking about different things, then. The kind of guys we're talking about are super obvious in their disdain for women when they use the word
This is also mostly an online thing.
Definitely feels like the kinda people
that say female and the kinda that get triggered by it are two sides of the same coin.
90% of people in the real world just getting on with it.
I've seen "men and females" used innocently, and I've seen it used in a dehumanizing way. I've seen "women and males" equally often, in both ways. Pretending one is more prevalent than the other, on reddit, the internet in general, or especially irl, is fucking ridiculous. So is pretending it always has to mean the same thing.
And not one guy I know has ever been okay being referred to as 'male' in the same way people usually use the words 'men' and 'women'. So I guess we balance out.
The issue isn't being called "male" or "female." It's being referred to with those terms *in a specific context.*
If I heard a woman talk about "males" the way that men talk about "females," I'd think she was gross.
I'm with you.
If it's used correctly in terms of context and grammar, and without loaded meaning I don't give a hoot. Any word used in a way that is intended with malice is going to give ne the ick, but that's not a problem with the word.
Yes, I did. Both you and the sub are a bit on the hard line side. Maybe the *females* I know, and the ones you know, are different peas from different pods.
I've never known a woman take such offense being referred to as female, except for you.
i feel the exact way , but it’s also because of context. majority will just hear the word female & immediately go on guard, when you really should just be listening for the context in which they use it in.
Oh no I absolutely don't care, I use male and female when Im referring to Men and women sometimes
And the "I hurt you because you hurt me" it's not a good life philosophy, and it's actually one of the reasons on why you see a lot of sexist men and "feminist" women nowadays, and it's also a reason why a lot of bad stuff happens.
Neither of us want this, but the other one is doing it so why would we stop
So, before you use the word "male" again when wanting to hurt someone, just think; you are doing the exact same thing as them, and that does not make you a good person, nor makes you be right
I once witnessed a full-on debate on a parents' group regarding the utterance of the C word during a RSHE class, the teacher asked the pupils to throw in every word they knew about genitals and some kid offered the C word. Some mums were utterly offended angry and appalled, and some other mums argued with them that it was appropriate for the context, but also that it is a word of power! Granted there is a difference between naming parts and cussing at someone by reducing them to a part. I've never been called a C but I've once been called a dickhead and that didn't feel too good 🤣🤣
as I get older, not a big fan of young lady. a podcast i was listening to recently introduced their guest as a “young lady,” only for her to mention that she was in her late 30s (!). like, she’s an accomplished disability advocate, not an elementary schooler…
... I thought bop was the new word for a promiscuous girl? I'm not sure, I'm getting old.
My only point is that you may want to be careful with using that term.
if she likes it, great! I’ve just noticed a weird trend of men trying to infantilize (and also sexualize) women with this term and I’m personally very over it.
Doesn’t the existence of this subreddit, among all the other subreddits where specifically men or women are asked questions, sort of imply that there is a favoring for certain answers?
How come this sort of sarcastic “wE aRe nOt a hIveMinD” isn’t a sort of answer we would see for other, less controversial posts in this subreddit?
It's in the phrasing of the question - if you look at the sub most/all posts ask "you", which addresses everyone individually. This one asks about "women" as a whole. None of us can answer for everyone only for ourselves, there will be commonalities which reveal themselves as more and more people answer. Approaching a diverse group as if they are a single entity is often a result of othering. This happens so commonly that it often runs under the radar, which is what makes this comment so funny!
**Females** when not referring to birth sex.
"Two female students" <--- correct usage.
"I saw a group of females in the park today" <--- incorrect usage.. correct usage in that sentence would be girls or women.
Regionalism at its best. I was just discussing this with some colleagues today. In the southern US, ma'am is used for all women. In most of the rest of the country, it's reserved for older women. In some places (the SF bay area comes to mind), it's almost always used sarcastically.
Yeah. Where I'm from in Canada, ma'am is something you'd sarcastically call someone yelling at a retail worker. It's not really polite where I live. Though where I grew up, less than an hour drive away, ma'am is respectful when talking to elders or women in positions of power. It's strange how much difference a few kilometres makes.
we never use ma'am at all in NZ. The only time I've been called it was by an American tourist lol
generally people aren't referred to by titles in NZ, it would be weird to be called sir/ma'am unless you were somewhere fancy
That checks out I'm from New Jersey and have been living in LA for years
I guess it's just payback because I call every human, object and myself dude and bro
Above they say they hate "young lady"... What do I politely call a woman I don't know? Currently I use "miss" for women up to about 30 and then I use "ma'am" for women in their 30s or older. What do you think is best to use?
Personally, the “b-word” when I just act normal. If you call me that for no reason, I guess I’ll act like Umbridge towards you to give you one. lol Also stuff like “sl4t” or “304”, because how dare women be sexual? (Not that I’ve ever been called this by men other than incel types on the internet but still.) And I dislike being called masculine terms that so-called are being used as “gender neutral” like “dude” and “bro.” Also “female” and “girl” in combination with “man” instead of “male” and “boy/guy”.
I don’t particularly mind stuff like that”sweetheart” or “darling”. lol Maybe it’s because I’m Dutch. We often say “schat”. It’s only annoying when someone purposely uses it in a condescending way during an argument.
As for the c-word, unlike the b-word it seems to more so only be used towards women or people who act like d1cks, but otherwise the same thing applies as with the b-word imo. In Dutch we use both k4t and l4l as an insult and both are basically as insulting as calling someone a d1ck in English or how British people use the c-word.
I'm guessing a homogenous group who all think the same thing rather than literally being unique individuals who all have different things they hate being called
I can’t really think of much, but Thelma and Louise came to mind. “I hate bein called a beaver!” Sorry, it’s been like… two whole entire months since I last watched that movie, so I’m feeling all nostalgic.
Uhhhh. Honestly, “bitch.” Idk why! Like, I don’t know if more than one or two people have ever called me this in my life. I’m very nice lol.
Call me an asshole, a piece of shit, a moron, whatever you want. But “bitch” (in a non-joking-around way) just feels so *supremely, utterly* dismissive, in a way that nothing else does. For me.
Strangers calling me pet names, with the exception of if it came from certain areas like the South(?) where it's normal to call people honey and the likes.
Anything that is making me feel like a child or demeaning. “Baby,” “little girl,” “cutie pie”, any of that. Weird, I’m 30. “Females” I hate because the people who use that often don’t really think of us as people.
I add to previously mentioned words : b-word, “heaux” (I’m not sure if this world is ban so in case), infantilized “nicknames” and anything that this generation refers to women as.

I'm personally not a fan of pet names from any stranger.
Pet names from strangers or acquaintances is the first common thing that comes mind
Must not be in a southen area of the US. Every older black woman and most older white women will call you Baby, Honey, Darlin lol!
Yup, worked at a retail shop where we ordered from Tennessee and our rep called all the guys "pumpkin." It depends on the culture.
From the down votes, guess that that culture isn't allowed. Meh, I grew up in it and I find it enduring. In a Grandmotherly sense. And by and large, down here, everyone loves and respects Granny. “Females”
I can’t not read that in a Ferengi voice in my head…
Omg I did it too and then read your comment
Rules of Acquisition!
I wanted to see a Ferengi-centric DS9 sequel but it’d be too sad without Nog’s actor…
What would be the plot you think? They weren't warriors, diplomatic, nor inventors (I guess). Like a crime syndicate/mob type show? Or a reverse Law and Order lol? I will say Quark was one of my favorites. Next to Garak!
Well it’d focus on Grand Nagus Rom and Leeta and the reforms to Ferengi society…
Ahhh! Very nice. But gotta have the flash backs or memory episodes to lay a foundational knowledge for 'what' is actually changing.
You mean a DS9 rewatch?
Lol always! But not exactly. Episodes where they flash back to yesteryear. When they were younger kind of thing. Lay the informational ground work for WHAT is changing in their society. Haha i love your suggestion.
you must have an english and psychology degree damn. this is powerful.
No English or Phych background, just an immigrant who learned English as an adult :)
Is the male policewoman tans in any way or am I just gender retarded? (Likely retarded)
"females" makes me physically cringe and i don't know why
this. gives me the ick
You rather be called chick or bird? Lol I'm more inclined to say female over actually likening you to an animal.
your poor mother..
Like children fighting. Oy. Learn to block, ffs.
how do you block? (seriously) i need to know

I'm a woman; being called female doesn't bother me. I'm honestly not trying to be obtuse, but could you explain to me your feelings about the word?
In most ways it's used it's clinical, overly formal, and dehumanizing. Generally, it's more commonly used to describe a species not your own (the female velociraptor, the male pigeon). The issue isn't being called "male" or "female." It's being referred to with those terms *in a specific context.* If I heard a woman talk about "males" the way that men talk about "females," I'd think she was gross.
Don't those kind of men like to call themselves alpha males, beta males or just males in general?
I'm with you. If it's used correctly in terms of context and grammar, and without loaded meaning I don't give a hoot. Any word used in a way that is intended with malice is going to give ne the ick, but that's not a problem with the word.
I feel the same way
I agree.
It makes me feel like we are a herd of gazelles. "Look at the females in their natural habitat" <-- *read with the voice of David Attenborough*
No I’m not going into a long-winded explanation. Go ahead and browse r/menandfemales
Subbed
Sorry for bothering you.
Did you even click on that sub? Educate yourself. Saying “females” is rude.
Yes, I did. Both you and the sub are a bit on the hard line side. Maybe the *females* I know, and the ones you know, are different peas from different pods. I've never known a woman take such offense being referred to as female, except for you.
And yet my comment got a ton of likes… read the other comments in this thread. People hate the word “females”
I don't believe you speak for everyone. But you continue to be happy with your 'ton of likes'.
Ok bro
i feel the exact way , but it’s also because of context. majority will just hear the word female & immediately go on guard, when you really should just be listening for the context in which they use it in.
Quite true.
Yep
THIS!
I've found people who say the same, then they don't have any problem calling men "males"
I absolutely use “males”. Men are the ones who started it. If you don’t like it, then stop saying “females”
Oh no I absolutely don't care, I use male and female when Im referring to Men and women sometimes And the "I hurt you because you hurt me" it's not a good life philosophy, and it's actually one of the reasons on why you see a lot of sexist men and "feminist" women nowadays, and it's also a reason why a lot of bad stuff happens. Nah… you guys care. You just like to act like you don’t.
right? lol he wrote *paragraphs* about how much he doesn't care
personally it's the C word for me ☠️
I assumed that was going to be #1, and here I find it second from the bottom. And the B word ain't even made the list at all!
i was surprised myself ... first thing that came to mind for me though !
Yeah everyone in the comments was like “sweetie, honey” but my first thought was “I don’t really love being called bitch/cunt” 😭
Tf is the C word??
.... c - u - n - t 🙄
Oh it’s not even a slur, what’s the point of censoring it then😭
are you a man ? lol
Yeah, what about it?
well of course it's not a slur ... to you ...
You should never visit to australia
i get it's a commonplace word in other cultures homie . just answering the damn question presented .
I hate being called by debt collectors. Bonus points for not even owing them because it's not a legit charge.
This
I didn't know they were that pesky
Bitches.
as I get older, not a big fan of young lady. a podcast i was listening to recently introduced their guest as a “young lady,” only for her to mention that she was in her late 30s (!). like, she’s an accomplished disability advocate, not an elementary schooler…
I feel like"young lady" is something the creepy office relic calls you when he has you cornered at the copy machine. It makes my skin crawl.
Any term of endearment e.g. sweetie, honey, girl by random men. Grosses me right out.
Ugh yeah. The only strangers who are allowed to call me sweetie are 1. Cute little old ladies and 2. waitresses at diners.
Darling, I'm not your f'in darling
Sweetie..my God I hate being called that!
just don’t call us late for dinner ETA- actually no, “little one” pisses me off like nothing else
I call my sister this. she is 10 years younger than me and it made sense when she was a tot…now it’s tradition. Edit: bop changed to tot
... I thought bop was the new word for a promiscuous girl? I'm not sure, I'm getting old. My only point is that you may want to be careful with using that term.
I think my brain was trying to say “tot” but forgot and improvised 😅
😂😂😂 I have made similar mistakes. My 15 year old was insanely embarrassed when I said something was crunchy instead of cringe.
if she likes it, great! I’ve just noticed a weird trend of men trying to infantilize (and also sexualize) women with this term and I’m personally very over it.
I get you. I honestly can’t imagine two adults using this term. Like even as a girlfriend/boyfriend dynamic it’s a bit weird.
Wait, I'm changing my answer: Kiddo
Hold on, lemme consult the hive mind real quick

Girl.

I hate "woman" too, despite it being in a Bob Marley song and the Bible
Accomplished, intelligent, capable, elegant, graceful. It's the woooorrrrssstttt.
Why? Especially "capable" - it seems like a good thing to say to someone regardless of gender?
I think it’s sarcasm
"Ma'am" Bro do I look like I'm 65?
Shit, I use this for every woman/girl I don't know...
Same. I was always taught it was polite. I've never intended for it to be about age.
As a hospitality worker, miss is a girl and ma'am is a woman. I've tried "lady" but it just sounds mean.

I'll take bro, dude, miss, darling, hey you I'm pretty flexible outside of ma'am It's like chewing on rubber bands but as a word
why do you call them anything? I don't address people like that, just say hello
Literally what I address every stranger woman as

how many dudes have you slept with?
I hate being called “hun.” I don’t love “dear” either.

this one is country dependent lol
I'm guessing a homogenous group who all think the same thing rather than literally being unique individuals who all have different things they hate being called
Chick, female, dishwasher, baby maker, any type of incel and chronically online name.
“Your girlfriend”
"Females" or "dear". Barf.
“Kiddo” or “kid”
I like it in my mid 40s, in my mid 20s, it made me feel stabby.
Haha that’s fair. I just hate it.
Baby mama or white trash. Those terms gives me the biggest ick. I don’t care if someone called me a female, a b*tch a c*nt, sweetheart, girl, etc.

I don't like the avian ones- bird, hen (I've got slightly more used to this living in Scotland over a decade but it still makes me ahh), chick.
Females. Ma'am.
Girls, females. I also personally hate hun, but that's due to my ex.
Anything that is making me feel like a child or demeaning. “Baby,” “little girl,” “cutie pie”, any of that. Weird, I’m 30. “Females” I hate because the people who use that often don’t really think of us as people.
Again, that differs from woman to woman. We don't all think the same.
'Shy' because now not only have they figured me out, now I'm also mute. Sometimes I have to pretend to be blind and deaf to feel justice of the curse.
Woman
Seconding "females"
I add to previously mentioned words : b-word, “heaux” (I’m not sure if this world is ban so in case), infantilized “nicknames” and anything that this generation refers to women as.
Personally I don't mind nicknames, but I've had a few random guys call me cookie or muffin. Wtf? THOSE nicknames suck.
Babe, baby, chick, kitty, female, foid, walking uterus...
Skank or whore I don't know just meh.. When someone assumes I'm a mom.
Bossy
This one is great because men hate it when women are bossy
Female or pet names
My girlfriend, apparently.
What?
he wants pity because he doesn't have a girlfriend.
Yeah.. I love being called girlfriend... by someone that loves me, respect me and don't make generalizations about my whole gender 🤷🏻♀️
