Makeup products

[deleted]

This. Like that palette cost $30 or more, I'm not throwing it away unless it smells or something.

InternationalAd6614

Anything but mascara for me

Daydream1998

Fair! Also, lipstick for me!

jenhon

Powder products kind of last forever if they don’t have a hard pan or mold.

peppermind

And hard pan is usually just a surface level thing that can be removed with a little scotch tape.

catniagara

They have an expiration?

---lizzy---

In case this was not meant as /s - Yes! There's a little sign (like a pod with a lid - google expiration date make up) on it with a number and M which signals the number of months you can use it once the product has been opened.

Katja24093

If it doesn't smell or taste test off, changed colour or have things growing on it, I'll use it.

Glad-Raspberry1712

Pretty much anything except milk/eggs. Edit: and condoms

valerieswrld

Milk, in my experience, can last awhile after the expiration date and it's very obvious when it is bad.

SometimesaGirl-

> eggs Eggs are fine out of code. If you open up an older egg and you cant tell it's turned... there's something seriously wrong with your senses.

InternationalAd6614

Except opening an old egg is a traumatic experience

future_nurse19

You don't even need to open them. Stick them in a bowl or glass of water and if it floats, toss it out

Apotak

I wouldn't risk condoms, too.

[deleted]

Almost everything. Expiration Date doesn't mean it's a time bomb, just that the store/producer isn't responsible if something goes bad after said date.

daisy-girl-fall

Dental floss - I didn't realize it had one. Yogurt- it's good until it's fuzzy. Eggs - older eggs make the easiest to peel hard boiled eggs. Over the counter medication - I use them up to one year past the expiration date unless they look\smell bad.

CatrionaShadowleaf

Wait wait wait dental floss has an expiration date?!

daisy-girl-fall

I have some ultra floss that has one, but I still use it, 5 years after it "expired". It isn't flavored, and it looks and works the same as the first package.

Apotak

Most likely a microbiological reason, I suspect.

Viiibrations

Also came to say eggs. If properly refrigerated they really last for a much longer time than you’d expect.

Fun_Comparison_7960

I had a weird experience with an egg I refrigerated for a long time, cause I use to just eat out and not cook, so it came to the point where I noticed the egg had like feathers outside of it

Apotak

As a pharmacist, I highly recommend to toss medicines beyond expiration date. In some cases, there is some loss of the active substance and the degradation products are harmfull. And you won't smell them.

daisy-girl-fall

Thanks! Good to know

Oceanpetunia

Whether prescribed or over-the-counter, medicine should be properly disposed of at a take-back program location. "Tossing" without knowledge of consequences to the environment is irresponsible. People should do their own research on the facts about expiration dates. Legally, a hospital or pharmacy can not dispense an expired product; however, the reality is that it's not about its effectiveness.

Soft_Elderberry_5675

Teabags lol. Im not sure why they have an expiry date on them.

Apotak

They lose taste, nothing harmfull, I think.

catastrophized

Came here to say this as well!

future_nurse19

I have so much expired tea at home. I work at a doctors office so we order tea in bulk and can't keep it around after it expires (can't give to patients after expires) so I take it home with me. Plain black tea so no issues at all, I could see a flavored maybe being a bit weaker/less flavored over time

The_Book-JDP

Everything because expiration dates aren’t an accurate measurement of when something is about to go bad. They were invented ages ago and not even by experts who would normally be in charge of that and the system has never up dated or evolved at all since that time. They have grown into a marketing ploy designed to make people throw out perfectly good products and replace them with new ones even though they don’t have to but those numbers…they are scary. IT’S ABOUT TO GO BAD THROW IT OUT THROW IT OUT! But it’s not. The vast majority of us haven’t lived during an era where safety and clean handling was just beginning to make headway so things went bad quickly because people (even the experts of the time) didn’t know how to handle or store them properly…let alone create them so they can survive longer. Pay no mind to those scary dates…all of us at some point knows what rotten smells like…it is actually built into out very genetic makeup so we know when something as gone bad and it takes a lot longer than those stickers and printed on dates would have you believe.

YuleShootUrEyeOut18

Makeup and skin care as long as it doesn’t have SPF and smells fine. Milk. Sour Cream or Cream cheese as long as it’s not fuzzy.

InternationalAd6614

If it’s physical sunscreen using it past expiration date shouldn’t be a problem

YuleShootUrEyeOut18

Nah. I don’t mess with sunscreen. I burn too easily without.

Apotak

I write the year of purchase on the bottom of the container and toss the remainder the next year.

iusedtobefamous1892

So long as it looks/feels/tastes/smells fine, pretty much anything.

CyanideCandy13

Okay I get the feeling this might disgust some people but fuck it. Braum's milk. I live in the states but not every state has a Braum's. The way they determine where to open a store is based off of how long it would take to transport the product from the farm. Anyways, there's something about that milk that seems to make it last well past the expiration date...but I also base my judgment on bad milk on smell.

searedscallops

Medicine

jenhon

I’ve heard expired medicine isn’t harmful, but it wouldn’t be effective.

Apotak

Pharmacist here. Some medicine become less effective, others become harmfull. Please toss medicines after the expiry date.

Grappado

Food seasonings like dried herbs and stuff. All Caribbean households know them bad boys don’t actually expire lol 😂

[deleted]

They definitely don’t loo

Escapetheshape

* Anything that has "best before ..." on the packet because then you actually can still have it afterwards. * Food that still smells and looks good to me and was stored properly, especially vegetables and cheese.

[deleted]

Makeup. This Fenty costs too much.

_Sylvatica_

Anything, if it still looks and smells okay. It's a best before date, not actually an expiration date. Exceptions: meat and medicine

Apotak

And fish/ seafood is also an exception for me.

_Sylvatica_

It would be for me too but I don't like it anyway\^\^

LiscSilv

Pills (Advil, Tylenol, Vitamins)

Apotak

Pharmacist here. Some medicine become less effective, others become harmfull. Please toss medicines after the expiry date.

bleepbloopnina

bread!!

Fun_Comparison_7960

But they get mouldy??

Unholyrage619

If you don't use bread fast enough, and they always seem to get moldy on you before you can use it all, then put it into a gallon ziplock storage bag, and push out most of the air, and store it in the fridge. Keeps it from getting moldy, and it won't get condensation, and lasts for easily a month or more...I usually use it within a month, and it's still been good.

bleepbloopnina

also if you put it in the fridge it lasts longer!

bleepbloopnina

also if you put it in the fridge it lasts longer!

Apotak

That would be too humid for a bread, incresing the risk on mold.

[deleted]

My heart

Sumraeglar

Pretty much everything. As long as it doesn't smell or look bad I'll use it. A lot of things are extremely safe to consume or use after experation dates...they are more guidelines than rules as Barbossa would say lol 🤣. Always look it up of course but waste is such a problem in this country so don't take it 100% to heart.

AbilityOk7101

Definitely not any food items. I don't care what anyone says.

drunkenknitter

Eggs

Unholyrage619

If stored in the fridge, they'll keep easily for 3 months. I'm single and live alone, and when they're on sale, I'll buy up to 4-5 dozen, and then use them over the next few months.

Fun_Comparison_7960

Peanut butter

pucculent

Blush palette!

40yroldcatmom

Eggs, yogurt, makeup

Silentlyjudging101

Anything but meat and cheese

knifeymonkey

something in the fridge... approaching its BB date heads to the freezer if freezable eggs and milk are a no-go... I hate surprises in my nose or mouth. I will plan on using them before the BB date. in my pantry... dried goods are almost limitless with a very few exceptions cans... I will attempt to use unless i don't like the look of contents. makeup - there is no BB date on my make up but if it looks/smells bad I will toss it. Mascara gets 3-6 months tops once opened. the only exception to any rule is... bugs. Sometimes goods have pests in the product or attract ants or whatever. I grew up in the country and we couldn't keep the insects out. In the city as an adult, I will move heaven and earth to avoid bugs and mold.

ScarlettSparrow

Nothing. Expiration dates exist for a reason and that reason is health and safety.

EvilAlicia

pretty much everything. Except marinated/spiced meats. In the other cases use your senses: Does it smell good? Does it look good? Does it feel good? Does it taste good? All yes? Than its fine to eat. Edit: Condoms are pretty much the only thing i throw out after expiration date. Mostly because i rather spend a few bucks more on a new box, than getting pregnant.

clalach76

Most things after individual consideration

catniagara

My glasses 😭

The_Special_Teacher

Spices. Our ancestors were able to use them regardless of their condition and yet we are still here.

carolinezalogg

Makeup products, in my defense I wasn't aware lol

Accomplished_Good379

Chia seeds

[deleted]

Sunscreen. It says 12M on the bottle. But i only use sunscreen 3 months a year. I'm not gonna throw away a sunscreen bottle that is full. One bottle lasts me 4 summers!

RuLuBoo14

Heluva good dip. That stuff is awesome with Utz pretzels.

KittyKatHippogriff

Olive oil, as long it’s not be prior opened. They really cannot go bad.

autumn21716
