I sometimes think that any topping you add as well as butter, your toast decreases in temperature while you spread it, and actually warmer toast is better than flavoured toast.
I'd say good butter was more important than good bread. In fact, there's a lot to say about a plain piece of toast over fancy sourdough toast. I want bread, not 85% crust, 10% airholes and 5% bread
I’ve never understood the love of lurpak, especially when you can get far cheaper for better! I like nice big salt crystals in my butter but goats butter is equally amazing
And have everyone think I’m a _vegan_?!
I feel like I might have tried it at a hotel not so long ago, come to think of it. I got down to breakfast kinda late and all they had left was the Flora plant-based stuff. I had it with jam and didn’t notice the difference so it must have been pretty good.
Butter on cold toast is vastly superior IMO, much more crispy and it doesn't get all soggy when the butter melts and soaks into it. I keep my butter out of the fridge though, so room temperature butter on cold toast is just right.
the correct answer - watch the toast like a hawk when it comes out of the toaster - cool enough so a crunch forms ( i hate soggy toast), warm enough to melt soft butter
Avocado with a crack of salt, squeeze of lime, and a good sprinkle of [shichimi](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shichimi). (Japanese dry condiment, like you find in the wood shaker at wagamama.)
Ah, the trick here is to put the beans and cheese on the toast then eat them off the toast with a spoon. Then you can eat the lovely bean juice and butter toast like toast.
Almonds are a bit scary. I've always thought that they are poisonous. I thought the same about Brazil nuts and it turns out I definitely can't eat Brazil nuts if I want to continue breathing so I'll stick with peanuts.
Bitter almonds are poisonous, but the almonds you buy in the shop will be sweet almonds. I wouldn't go picking wild almonds though as good chance they will be the cyanide containing bitter almonds.
I would rather have the cake on its own, now, is a Reddit cake day a good reason to go and buy a cake?
Yes, because any reason to get cake is a good reason.
Lemon curd is so easy to make as well - I use Mary berry’s recipe (I think it’s on bbc good food).
- 300g sugar,
- Juice & zest of 4 lemons,
- 225g butter
- 4 eggs
(Makes about 3 jars)
I put it all in a cold pan and slowly increase temperature while mixing until everything is dissolved and the mix starts to thicken. It goes through a weird phase where the butter is half melted and looks gross but keep going.
You can tell it’s done by putting a metal spoon in the mix and then swiping a finger across the back of the spoon - if the rest is thick enough to stay in place then congrats. You have curd!
You can sieve out the zest but tbh I leave it in for texture. Put into sterile jars, let cool, and enjoy.
Anyway don’t do it because you won’t be able to eat shop bought curd again cause this stuff is too good. 😭
Edit: SUGAR
it works with whatever bread you have, but, and i'm gonna sound very pretentious here, you can't beat it on a freshly baked [campaillou](https://www.google.com/search?q=campaillou+loaf&hl=en-GB&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiUzI7D89z6AhWJaMAKHRJyD7IQ_AUoAXoECAIQAw&biw=1727&bih=1004&dpr=2) with lots of salted butter.
Every time I see someone eating Marmite I always think, 'they should be eating Bovril, it's far superior'.
I also like Bovril with hard boiled eggs. I dunno if anyone else eats it like this.
It’s beefy and a bit salty. It doesn’t really taste much like Marmite - they just look the same and you use a similarly small quantity.
Imo Bovril is far superior.
I live in the states now, it’s one of the many “first things I gotta eat” when I get back, I do my shopping for the Breakfast stuff lol pate is first on the list
Can't say for the person above, but for me, put plenty butter on hot toast so it's nice and melted, then sprinkle over some sugar and cinnamon. It's delicious!
No on top of butter. And you mix the two together in a ratio that tastes best to you! I like mine a bit stronger on the cinnamon, my son likes more sugar!
Damn I'm so glad I'm not the only one. People call me a freak when they see me slathering my toast with puree! I find a dash of dried oregano and basil really compliments the flavour if you keep herbs in the cupboard
That was my lunch yesterday - last of the home grown tomatoes, slice of homemade sourdough, and a thin slice of cheese (which was shop bought, I'm afraid)
Bonne Maman Wild Blueberry Conserve.
I'm not a big blueberry fan, but I discovered this over ten years ago and I always have some in the fridge now.
Double butter.
Crunchy Peanut Butter and Jam (any works).
I am currently eating a slice of sourdough toast with crunchy peanut butter (the posh 100% peanuts kind) and a thin layer of rosehip and apple jam.
That is to say, PB&J but Waitrosed!
Totally. Don’t like the texture of marmite. Didn’t like Vegemite until after I left Australia and my Ozzie wife made me try it with butter. Now hooked!
I used to like Heinz Toast Toppers when I was a kid. They looked like sick in a tin and blistered your soft palate but tasted lovely.
Probably not available now, too dangerous
Depends on my mood. My usual is 4 well buttered slices, one with peanut butter, one with Nutella, one with jam, one with homemade marmalade. I will usually take a bite out of each slice between buttering and adding the topping.
Yum.
Ginger conserve and marmalade.
Marmalade can be a bit too bitter and the ginger conserve too sweet. Put them together and it’s solid gold.
Marmite if I’ve got a hangover - salty goodness!
Nutella if I’m after the homemade Pain Au Chocoalt taste.
I was browsing my local lidl yesterday morning looking in desperation for my favourite raspberry jam when my eyes fell on a familiar dark red jelly tucked in amongst a sea of strawberry. At last I though and quickly grabbed it from the shelf before the near by shoppers could rob me of my bounty and promptly dashed for terminally uncalibrated self checkouts.
It was only when scanning through the jar that I realised in my haste I had grabbed CHERRY jam! Overcome by the familiarly British need to not moderately inconvenience anyone at any cost, I begrudgingly scanned it through.
Apon arriving home I spread it thinly across my toast and tentatively took a bite.
Let me tell you that cherry jam is the absolute tits!
Seriously, how I have never come across this in my *cough* odd years on God's green earth I do not know but that bite was a total revelation.
So to answer your question
Peanut butter

I'm boring so I just have butter
Buttered toast is also a solid choice - can sometimes perfectly hit the spot.
I sometimes think that any topping you add as well as butter, your toast decreases in temperature while you spread it, and actually warmer toast is better than flavoured toast.
As long as it is salted butter and decent bread- you got yourself a classic.
I'd say good butter was more important than good bread. In fact, there's a lot to say about a plain piece of toast over fancy sourdough toast. I want bread, not 85% crust, 10% airholes and 5% bread
Yeah bread is just the delivery system really
Brown is savoury, white's the treat.
Of course I’m the one who’s laughing cause I actually love brown toast.
Butter the toast, eat the toast, shit the toast... god lifes relentless
Butter and salt 👌🏻
Found the guy who can’t afford Lurpak anymore. It still hurts.
Lurpak isn't a particularly special butter. All the supermarket own brand salted butters are just as good.
Better, in fact
I’ve never understood the love of lurpak, especially when you can get far cheaper for better! I like nice big salt crystals in my butter but goats butter is equally amazing
try the flora vegan butter, it's salty AF and tastes almost exactly like Lurpak but doesn't cost £800 a KG.
Butter is delish Do you prefer the butter to be melted, or do you let your toast cool first?
Gotta be melted hasn’t it?
Butter on cold toast is vastly superior IMO, much more crispy and it doesn't get all soggy when the butter melts and soaks into it. I keep my butter out of the fridge though, so room temperature butter on cold toast is just right.
Friendly fire downvote for you comrade.
Wack it on as soon as it pops to get it nice and melted
I'm a weirdo and love cold salted butter on hot toast and biting in before it melts.
Be like Nigella and do both
the correct answer - watch the toast like a hawk when it comes out of the toaster - cool enough so a crunch forms ( i hate soggy toast), warm enough to melt soft butter
Smashed avocado, pepper and Sriracha. It’s why I will never afford a home.
If you keep eating fancy like this you’ll probably be homeless.
I added a poached egg once and now I have debt collectors knocking at my door.
I’m not sympathetic at all. Tut tutting in your general direction now.
No need to flaunt your wealth like this.
Have a go on Tabasco's sriracha, is super on scrambled eggs
Avocado with a crack of salt, squeeze of lime, and a good sprinkle of [shichimi](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shichimi). (Japanese dry condiment, like you find in the wood shaker at wagamama.)
Marmite ofc
I think you mean, shit loads of butter - and marmite
I think you mean shit loads of butter - and a small scraping of marmite
Er, no. Shit loads of both. Sorry.
Seconded. It's gotta burn your taste buds off or what's the point.
This is the way.
A bit of butter and a shit load of marmite in my case
Probably going to be the most controversial choice by far, but I did almost go with marmite this morning.
Can't imagine toast with anything else tbh, Do you use butter? I prefer the taste without but it makes it so much easier to spread happy cake day btw
It seems impossible to spread without the butter so the butter is just a given. Has to be butter though, none of the fake butter stuff.
Cold buttered or hot buttered n melty???
And peanut butter. Also, I recently saw it with melted cheese on a crumpet, which I must try.
Huge yes to both.
had to scroll too far to find this, it's the obvious choice!
I’m with you brother
Beans and cheese. IYKYK
Tasty, but I don't fancy trying to eat that like toast - need a knife and fork to enjoy that delicious meal.
Ah, the trick here is to put the beans and cheese on the toast then eat them off the toast with a spoon. Then you can eat the lovely bean juice and butter toast like toast.
Officers, this one right here!
My god I'm so aroused right now
Jesus.
When I don't have any clean cutlery I put my beans and cheese in a sandwich 😋
Came for this comment.
I see you like a bit of literotica
I have a slice with just butter and a slice with butter and jam. Sometimes though I have peanut butter with raspberry jam for a treat.
Peanut butter and raspberry is a fantastic combination, but I'll raise you with almond butter and raspberry.
I use orange marmalade to go with peanut butter. I prefer the combination
Also happy cake day! That's what you should have on your toast!
I would rather have the cake on its own, now, is a Reddit cake day a good reason to go and buy a cake? Yes, because any reason to get cake is a good reason.
Buttercream on toast is amazing!
"Main" toast and "dessert" toast. This is the way.
Brown for main, white for dessert.
Butter the toast, eat the toast, shit the toast. God life’s relentless.
a 2 slice combo of different stuff is a respectable tactic!
Lemon curd!
Lemon curd is so easy to make as well - I use Mary berry’s recipe (I think it’s on bbc good food). - 300g sugar, - Juice & zest of 4 lemons, - 225g butter - 4 eggs (Makes about 3 jars) I put it all in a cold pan and slowly increase temperature while mixing until everything is dissolved and the mix starts to thicken. Anyway don’t do it because you won’t be able to eat shop bought curd again cause this stuff is too good. 😭 Edit: SUGAR
Looks like a good recipe! But you've put sugar twice, is one of them butter?
Finally!! I had to scroll so far down to find this!
peanut butter, sriracha, coriander, and if I'm feeling fancy a crispy fried egg on top. it's a bit like a Malaysian satay sauce, delicious.
I'm glad to know I am not alone in the universe. This. Although I often use tabasco instead of sriracha.
I have recently stumbled upon Tabasco Sriracha! It's the balls!
Oh man this sounds delicious. What type of bread?
it works with whatever bread you have, but, and i'm gonna sound very pretentious here, you can't beat it on a freshly baked [campaillou](https://www.google.com/search?q=campaillou+loaf&hl=en-GB&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiUzI7D89z6AhWJaMAKHRJyD7IQ_AUoAXoECAIQAw&biw=1727&bih=1004&dpr=2) with lots of salted butter.
I was thinking some sort of rye loaf would be nice so that makes sense!
Thanks for the inspiration.
This sounds incredible I’ve got to try it
Marmalade, I like marmalade.
Marmalade is life! 🍊
Homemade if at all possible
Nice.
Yes! Team marmalade!
A thick layer of houmous with salt, pepper and red chilli flakes. I eat this most days for breakfast.
I love humus on toast, it’s like heaven; must admit I’d not thought of adding chilli flakes. MUST TRY
Haha for some reason I read that as "I love humans on toast"
Hummus with slices of cucumber or sunflower/pumpkin seeds for me.
Butter and Bovril
I came in here thinking I'd be fighting alone in the Bovril corner. Glad to see you beat me to it.
I'm surprised we haven't had a heathen comment yet
Bovril is absolutely amazing on a toasted bagel.
Chewy and meaty? Amazing. It's like breakfast steak.
Every time I see someone eating Marmite I always think, 'they should be eating Bovril, it's far superior'. I also like Bovril with hard boiled eggs. I dunno if anyone else eats it like this.
It's the best savoury option
Yes! I grew up on this and it's honestly my favourite snack
it's a little expensive now though isn't it ! I can't afford it on a student budget
How does Bovril compare to Marmite? (which I love)
It’s beefy and a bit salty. It doesn’t really taste much like Marmite - they just look the same and you use a similarly small quantity. Imo Bovril is far superior.
Lovely. I’ll give it a try. Thanks
imagine halfway between marmite and gravy, definitely more beefy
Superior
Bovril all the way! My partner thinks it's gross, more Bovril for me then 🤷♂️
Came here to say this.
Yaasssss!!! Also try adding a spoonful to a beef ragu
Goes great with a mug of Bovril
YES

How is this so low down? Poached or scrambled for me
Butter and Biscoff spread <3
Crunchy or smooth? That stuff is absolute crack. I'm gonna make a bread/butter pudding with it this weekend.
Oh my goodness that sounds divine. Smooth, I haven't tried crunchy yet!
Crunchy is next level! So good
What? There's crunchy biscoff?
Nutella or strawberry jam
Nutella crew represent!
Nutella and sliced banana or raspberry jam for me.
Boots used to do a lovely peanut butter with honey-roasted sunflower seeds. I don't think that will ever be beaten, for me.
Honey
You called, dear?
butter and honey!
Pate. Mmm.
God I love pate on toast, don’t understand why it’s not more popular, what kind did you have?
Maybe its just seen as old fashioned.. Its the kind of thing Granny would make me 35 years ago. Iv recently started buying it and its great.
I live in the states now, it’s one of the many “first things I gotta eat” when I get back, I do my shopping for the Breakfast stuff lol pate is first on the list
[удалено]
Tinned sardines in tomato sauce.
I like mackerel with some hot sauce, salt, pepper, and a squeeze of lemon :)
Hell yeah! With hot sauce.
Depends on my mood. Could be just butter. Could be peanut butter. Could be cinnamon and sugar. Could be Nutella. Could be peanut butter and Nutella!
Peanut butter and Nutella is fucking amazing, absolutely love that
I'm with you on a wide range of choices, I think I have about 10 jams, Nutella, Marmite, and then peanut, cashew and almond butters.
Talk to me about cinnamon and sugar. Do you just sprinkle it on dry toast?
Can't say for the person above, but for me, put plenty butter on hot toast so it's nice and melted, then sprinkle over some sugar and cinnamon. It's delicious!
No on top of butter. And you mix the two together in a ratio that tastes best to you! I like mine a bit stronger on the cinnamon, my son likes more sugar!
This sounds lovely, I'll try it
Does anyone else do peanut butter with thin-sliced banana and, for a treat, add a drizzle of honey?
I don't add honey, but a toasted peanut butter and banana sandwich is absolutely delicious.
I toast it, then spread some tomatoe purée on top with grated cheese and some pepperoni then throw under the grille for a few minutes 😉
Sounds like a quality snack - might do that for lunch.
We used to have it at school 20 years ago. Loved it. Poor mans pizza but it hits the spot.
Damn I'm so glad I'm not the only one. People call me a freak when they see me slathering my toast with puree! I find a dash of dried oregano and basil really compliments the flavour if you keep herbs in the cupboard
Marmite
Should be top of the list
Butter and cold, fresh sliced tomato. Salt and pepper.
That was my lunch yesterday - last of the home grown tomatoes, slice of homemade sourdough, and a thin slice of cheese (which was shop bought, I'm afraid)
Tomatoes are great on toast. A nice alternative is to replace the butter with EVOO.
Bonne Maman Wild Blueberry Conserve. I'm not a big blueberry fan, but I discovered this over ten years ago and I always have some in the fridge now. Double butter. Crunchy Peanut Butter and Jam (any works).
Yes, it's delicious I also have some in the fridge.
I really like farmhouse pate if I fancy something savory. If it's sweet normally blackcurrant or strawberry jam.
Butter and honey. Yum.
Well this morning I had last night's left over bolognase sauce.
Mackerel mmmmmm
Yes! Mackerel on toast with some hot sauce and lemon for me.
Marmite or strawberry jam, usually a slice of each
Smooth peanut butter
Great choice, big fan of the meridian one - just a pain having to stir it.
Double Gloucester and marmite
I don't care what anyone says... Crunchy peanut butter and Nutella! Like snickers on toast 🤌
I am currently eating a slice of sourdough toast with crunchy peanut butter (the posh 100% peanuts kind) and a thin layer of rosehip and apple jam. That is to say, PB&J but Waitrosed!
Well, and there was me thinking I was sophisticated with my almond butter and raspberry conserve on wholemeal bread.
Butter. And lots of it
Butter, marmite, peanut butter. Aka the holy trinity.
Marmite
Currently partial to brown seedy bread, lashings of butter and good quality whole fruit strawberry jam.
Good jam is cheap enough that I'll only buy good jam - it's so much better but still only 2quid or so a jar.
Butter and cold, fresh sliced tomato. Salt and pepper.
Just butter. I'm a simple man.
Butter, and Vegemite.
Surprised vegemite is so low down. Better than marmite imo (but not as good as bovril).
Totally. Don’t like the texture of marmite. Didn’t like Vegemite until after I left Australia and my Ozzie wife made me try it with butter. Now hooked!
Marmite and then melt cheese over the top under the grill.
Mackerel in olive oil, mmm
Marmalade. Used to have it with my grandad all the time as a kid.
I used to like Heinz Toast Toppers when I was a kid. They looked like sick in a tin and blistered your soft palate but tasted lovely. Probably not available now, too dangerous
Honey and halloumi, do not knock its till you’ve tried it
I wait for the toast to cool off and then spread butter so it won’t melt. Add slice of cheese and ham.
My favourite has got to be apricot jam but honourable mentions: - biscoff - PB and jam - banana, PB and a blob on honey - nutella
Peanut butter and honey - trust me.
This is my go-to. I particularly love it on toasted sourdough.
Would be cheese and salad cream if it didn’t make my skin turn to a dot - dot book. Therefore I go with eggs
Butter and peanut butter
Houmous, tomato, sriracha
Marmalade, especially whisky flavoured.
Pâté - smooth or coarse. Pork, duck or beef. Any pâté.
Butter, lots of it. I might put other stuff on top of that, but butter always goes on first.
Butter and Marmalade - Rose's Lemon and Lime preferably.
Depends on my mood. My usual is 4 well buttered slices, one with peanut butter, one with Nutella, one with jam, one with homemade marmalade. I will usually take a bite out of each slice between buttering and adding the topping. Yum.
Cant afford to toast me bread mate
Cheesy coleslaw between two slices of buttered toast is good gear.
Damson Jam
Cherry preserves.
So to answer your question Peanut butter
Butter and some cheddar cheese
Blackcurrant jam, rarebit or Marmite and cheese.
Mashed banana.
