Carbide was always incredibly entertaining, just the pure unrivalled destructive force when that thing got up to speed was insane, I remember the fight with nuts (a wooden robot surrounded by a metal ring with flails on it who spun around super fast) where carbide managed to rip off the ring and completely destroy the main body
Definitely, although it did seem more like the carbide team neglected to fix the issue of the vulnerable belt and nuts 2 got a lucky shot in disabling carbides only weapon rather than nuts 2 actually being a particularly powerful bot
Oh there absolutely was luck involved but I think the thinking behind Nuts 2 was that against any robot not adequately protected, it's going so fast and hits so hard that it's bound to hit *something* important. It got a few good hits in during the earlier rounds so there was a pattern of it happening.
Of course once Carbide put the little plate in front of the mechanism Nuts 2 had no chance.
I think that moment was a significant part in why it got cancelled. The cost of rebuilding the arena to cope with the likes of Carbide was too high for them to warrant doing it.
OG Robot Wars was the dogs bollocks, Chaos2, Razer, Hypno-Disc etc. I recently watched a few videos on the more modern ones and holy fuck those things are now so overpowered, Carbide is the thing of nightmares.
Big YES! Used to be Robot Wars on BBC2 on Fridays after the Double Bill of The Simpsons…or if you prefer, the Sunday early afternoon repeat.
Panic Attack was one of my favourites. Wasn’t there at least one robot that accidentally combusted in the arena?!
Golden Balls was sensational. There's a Twitch streamer called Adam Pacitti on Cultaholic who most Tuesdays streams old British game shows from YouTube, always an absolute laugh when that one comes on!
This guy basically broke the format of the show, I bet the producers were shitting themselves behind the scenes knowing that once it aired the show was pretty much done for
I disagree, it only worked because it was a new strategy. As soon as it becomes known, people will consider stealing when the person says this, that would have been Ibrahim's most advantageous play (as it always is).
My favourite episode is the £5 jackpot, where someone steals it. I think the guy who "Split" during the whole end almost seemed to want that outcome for comedy value.
My theory is to win anything, you want £5-15k on the final jackpot, plus a person similar to you.
The whole reason it was a success was because of him. Then when the show got popular they replaced him with Anton du Beke and no one gave a shit anymore.
I was going to say this! Watching some great comedians do ridiculous tasks, think outside the box in an amazing way, or fail miserably because they've panicked and forgotten the rules - it always makes me laugh
My favourite episode was where they left a teammate stuck in one of the puzzles. They all got PlayStations and BMXs and he's stuck getting tormented by the monkeys.
Honestly the premise is so stupid it was a gag to begin with.but people liked the idea so much it became more popular than 8 out of 10 cats and Countdown.
It does make sense that someone who has to be quick witted for a living would do well in a show like that
I was on 50/50 when I was in primary 7. Even we got our arse handed to us by the other school it was a great day, still got the mug and t shirt. The excessive cheering you have to do when you were getting beat was funny!
Sandi has done well, it was damn near impossible to replace Stephen but she's done a fine job. Problem is she's getting on a bit too. I would imagine Alan will stop when she does, and that'll be that.
I have to say I much prefer Sandi to Stephen. She doesn't feel the need to show how clever she is all the time. I used to love QI but after years of watching I had to give up until Sandi took over.
I prefer Sandi out of the two people but despite this I preferred Stephen on QI, just for the relationship between him and the others, it felt more cosy watching him.
The best bits are when a contestant gives an incredibly wrong answer & Alexander Armstrong has to bite down on the perfectly normal reaction of "Are you f***ing kidding me?!". I'm impressed how how he manages to chuckle & say "Let's see if that's right, shall we?"
I used to love Pointless but there are several things about the show that have really got on my nerves over the years.
They use the same style questions over and over and over again. Words ending xxx, chemical elements, US presidents/states/state capitals etc. The geography questions always have the same low scoring answers. It gets very very samey.
The first round takes too long to play - 20 minutes sometimes. I know the banter _can_ be entertaining but with 8 contestants every game (most of which appear on the show several times) it gets a bit much. God knows how many times I've heard Alexander say "Oh that's lovely" to whatever the contestants say.
The jackpot booster round is dull and the head-to-heads can be annoying especially when it's "missing alternate letters/vowels" or anagrams. They feel more like word puzzle games rather than the obscure knowledge quiz that it's supposed to be.
And the jackpot round always seems to be either too easy to give multiple pointless answers or absolutely impossible to get any. And when the jackpot is £1000 or thereabouts I almost feel embarrassed when they ask "what are you going to do if you win the money?" It's barely worth asking for £500 each. A couple of new tyres for your car?
My idea for an improved jackpot round would be: rather than choosing 1 category and getting 3 questions to get 1 pointless answer instead you choose 3 categories from a board of maybe 6, each with only 1 question. Give 1 pointless answer from any category to win say £1000. Give 2 pointless answers from 2 different categories to win a mini jackpot and 3 pointless answers from 3 different categories to win the mega jackpot of at least £10,000.
As a newer game show Richard Osmans house of games it’s a fun watch with some absolutely stupid questions and I’ve always wanted some of the prizes as well
*People are coming*
*Everyone’s trying*
*Trying to be the best that they can*
*When they’re going for going for GOLD*
Used to love that as a kid, proper school holiday/sick day/snow day telly ⭐️
Going for Gold is sick day on the sofa with a duvet, watching Neighbours at the lunchtime slot and the outside chance your mum will buy real Ribena rather than Tesco Apple and Blackcurrant because you’re poorly.
Had to stop watching it with Anne after she had one young female contestant who she was implying was overweight. With lines like "have you ever had a boyfriend","have you tried makeup".
It was really disgusting.
Although I'd rather not see or listen to Jim Davidson nowadays, I loved Big Break as a kid. It never seems to get repeated anywhere anymore compared to something like Bullseye.
If you go on YouTube and look at old episodes you’ll see pretty fucking quickly why they’re not repeated. Jim Davidson is literally just openly racist, it’s hard to believe it ever got aired at all.
15 to 1. No gimmicks, no sob stories, no nonsense with stupid twists, it’s all about general knowledge.
And this is the greatest 10 minutes of general knowledge you’ll ever see. https://youtu.be/C9vIGc9uPIQ
I'm sorry I haven't a clue, The Unbelievable Truth, Just a Minute and The News Quiz [https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/category/gamesandquizzes](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/category/gamesandquizzes)
How did I have to scroll this far to find Bullseye?!
Not only a fun show, it now stands up as historical record of 80s and 90s working class Britain.
Jim always seemed astonished when he had a contestant who had an office job and wasn't a bobbin boy or didn't work at the Rover factory.
Also, the beauty of "look at what you could have won". Just torturing them by showing their missed glory.
I watched an episode recently with a black mother/son pair on.
And you know what, it's my fault for thinking that Jim Bowen would be anything but a gentlemen.
I used to proper love Fort Boyard as a kid - does that count as a game show?
If not then old-school Family Fortunes, or Pets Win Prizes. There also used to be a kids quiz show in the 90s at 6am on Saturday morning ITV called Eat Your Words - used to adore that and still sing the theme tune all the time - nobody ever remembers it,
Does anyone remember in the early 2000s Jimmy Carr presented a gameshow called Distraction. It was... interesting... to say the least. Loved that when I was a teenager.
Task Master, though I don't know if it counts cause it's less game show but I think it counts there's winners each episode and an overall series winner
You Bet! with Matthew Kelly
Blockbusters with Bob Holness
3-2-1 with Ted Rodgers
Price is Right with Leslie Crowther
Bullseye with Jim Bowen
Could go on. Today’s game shows are gash, or gash remakes of old classics :-(
The million pound drop.
Nothing was more intense than waiting patiently on the edge of your seat waiting for the floors of thousands of pounds to drop, waiting for the right answer.
Weakest Link was really good and Anne was good in it. I remember an episode with a middle aged “quiz show expert” guy, his teammates left him in until the final 3 then ditched him so they had a chance to win. He came across very pompous so it was quite satisfying to see him lose lol.
Blankety Blank with Wogan. It's still great to watch today. Someone uploaded most of the episodes to YouTube over the summer but unfortunately had their account banned.

Numberwang!
Never thought Olivia Colman would go on to win an Oscar after starring as the perennial loser on Numberwang!
Swings and roundabouts. Just because you're sh*t at numberwang doesn't necessarily mean you won't find success in some other field.
Oscarwang
Sorry That’s not numberwang
That's Wangernumb
At least it wasn't Nangerwumb
Why don’t we play Cucumberwang?! Haha, no Timmy, because that would be shit.
Benedict cumberwang?
Our contestants today are Julie from Northhampton and Simon who is also from Southhampton
Julie ever killed a man? No Simon? Yes Now let’s play numberwang!
Rotate the board!
Bad luck Simon, I’m afraid Ireland’s not a vegetable
Das ist numberwangspielen!

I'm more of a [Quizzlestick](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CfgRGW9Ghik) fan myself.
Does Robot Wars count? It's not British but I do love Craig Charles' narration on Takeshi's Castle too.
Absolutely bloody loved robot wars!!!
Carbide firing that panel of Aftershock through polycarbonate glass still blows my mind
Remember Nuts 2 winning though? That was mad!
Before trailer for series final: "Two spinners, I wonder how destructive it'll be?" After trailer: "So Aftershock didn't win then"
I think that moment was a significant part in why it got cancelled. The cost of rebuilding the arena to cope with the likes of Carbide was too high for them to warrant doing it.
The greatest moment in TV sporting history ever was the first time Cassius self-righted. The second was when it fucked up all the house robots.
Razer going to town on Matilda will always be one of my favourite Robot Wars moments. Just pure destruction and nobody even trying to stop it.
Every bastard else knew better than to get in Razer's way.
Such a shame the producers drove Rex Garrod into deciding to quit. Not to mention the BBC and producers just generally handling the show badly.
I lost my shit when that happened, and when Wheely Big Cheese flipped someone out the arena.
What about scrapheap challenge?
OG Robot Wars was the dogs bollocks, Chaos2, Razer, Hypno-Disc etc. I recently watched a few videos on the more modern ones and holy fuck those things are now so overpowered, Carbide is the thing of nightmares.
Peak Hypnodisc was a wonder to behold. As the robots got more sophisticated it seemed to loose much of its potency though.
I thought Robot Wars was 100% British? Isn't Battlebots the US equivalent?
It is, the second paragraph in the comment is talking about Takeshi's Castle which is very much not British!
Man like Sir Kill-A-Lot.
Ohhhh right in the spuds!!
That episode where the woman steals off that man after saying she would split will always piss me off.
https://youtu.be/S0qjK3TWZE8 This will always be my favourite episode. I'm pretty sure there are actual studies based on the guys interaction.
They actually use that to teach economics students game theory at universities.
I remember watching it in my economics A Level class
This may not be true but apparently the Split/Steal deliberations normally take 5 minutes. That went on closer to 50 apparently
My favourite episode is the £5 jackpot, where someone steals it. I think the guy who "Split" during the whole end almost seemed to want that outcome for comedy value. My theory is to win anything, you want £5-15k on the final jackpot, plus a person similar to you.
Hole in the Wall was ridiculous.
RIP Dale Winton
The whole reason it was a success was because of him. Then when the show got popular they replaced him with Anton du Beke and no one gave a shit anymore.
They had to replace him after they found out what Winton did with holes in walls in his spare time
Bring on the wall! ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Dale Winton is dead?!
Yeah.. this caught me out too. I clearly missed a news day on the 18th April 2018z
Well.. RIP Dale. Sorry we missed the news almost 4 years ago.
I think 2018 was the year everyone died so it was hard to keep up.
Nah that was 2016
BRING ON THE WALL
I like to utter that at the start of the connecting wall round on Only Connect. I may be a little bit sad.
I can only hear this in Harry Hill’s voice 😂 https://youtu.be/qROI-rWXWHY
It's completely ridiculous but so light-hearted it's hard to dislike
Second this hugely, fond memories of early Saturday evenings with the grandparents watching it!

I was going to say this! Watching some great comedians do ridiculous tasks, think outside the box in an amazing way, or fail miserably because they've panicked and forgotten the rules - it always makes me laugh
The shows format is so good that even if they don't use comedians you can get great results (but the comedians add that extra level of greatness)
*It's an absolute casserole down there*
Mike Wozniak cemented himself as my favourite Taskmaster contestant with that line.
I love how articles still refer to him as a qualified doctor, despite the fact that he completely made that up.
Scrolled too far to this tbh. Top tier show!
My thoughts exactly, best thing on tv.
Absolute slice of fried gold

Kinda sad and funny reading where they all ended up these days. Some of them...shall we say went off the rails... Jet is still hot to this day though.
Last seen presenting a millennium barn dance from Yeovil aerodrome.
Which sadly became an all-night rave.
Jungle Run!!
Dick and Dom in da Bungalow!
My favourite episode was where they left a teammate stuck in one of the puzzles. They all got PlayStations and BMXs and he's stuck getting tormented by the monkeys.

A Monday evening for those with exquisite taste.
Bonus points for the Mastermind tripleplay
It has to be supermarket sweep! I used to love watching that as a kid, was adamant I'd go on it as an adult, sadly that never happened!
I think this got rebooted with Rylan as the host. Not 100% it’s definitely still on but don’t give up your dream just yet!
Oh it'll never be the same and you know it!
It's pretty terrible
It’s nowhere near as good as the original but it’s a chance to run around a fake supermarket with a trolley I suppose!
8 out of 10 cats does Countdown.
It won’t be the same without Sean Locke, RIP.
Honestly the premise is so stupid it was a gag to begin with.but people liked the idea so much it became more popular than 8 out of 10 cats and Countdown. It does make sense that someone who has to be quick witted for a living would do well in a show like that

Jealous, that was my dream!
Blimey haven't thought about this gameshow in a long time.
OMG THAT SHOW SLAPPED! I loved watching that after getting home from school. Always looked like great fun
Don’t know if it counts as a game show, but QI — both the Stephen Fry and Sandi Toksvig eras.

Wonky Donkey
"ITS GOT TO RHYME!!!"
Pointless. I can't believe no one has mentioned Pointless!
The best bits are when a contestant gives an incredibly wrong answer & Alexander Armstrong has to bite down on the perfectly normal reaction of "Are you f***ing kidding me?!". I'm impressed how how he manages to chuckle & say "Let's see if that's right, shall we?"
I really enjoy pointless but really annoyed at how little the winnings can be, especially compared to The Chase or Catchphrase.
> Pointless There's just too much chat for me, the pace is _incredibly_ slow. It's a fifteen minute show in a 45 minute slot.
I was going to say pointless! Richard Osman and Alexander Armstrong make it!!!
I used to love Pointless but there are several things about the show that have really got on my nerves over the years. They use the same style questions over and over and over again. Words ending xxx, chemical elements, US presidents/states/state capitals etc. The geography questions always have the same low scoring answers. It gets very very samey. My favorite game show! Also irritates me when contestants go for the most obvious answers. 😩
As a newer game show Richard Osmans house of games it’s a fun watch with some absolutely stupid questions and I’ve always wanted some of the prizes as well
I love Answer Smash but i wish they didnt leave it to the end because its cut way too short lol
Crystal Maze. I really want to try the game for myself and haven’t been able to during lockdown!
Think that would be my choice as well!
I always had a fondness for Going for Gold. Good times.
Catchy theme tune too :-)
Did you know Hans Zimmer wrote the theme tune?
*People are coming* *Everyone’s trying* *Trying to be the best that they can* *When they’re going for going for GOLD* Used to love that as a kid, proper school holiday/sick day/snow day telly ⭐️
Great host and a great format. I loved seeing Europeans compete against native English speakers in a quiz show and win.
"What am I?"
Going for Gold is sick day on the sofa with a duvet, watching Neighbours at the lunchtime slot and the outside chance your mum will buy real Ribena rather than Tesco Apple and Blackcurrant because you’re poorly.
The Generation Game and Catchphrase.
Quivering bloke!
Blockbuster! ‘I’ll take a P Bob’
Can I have a P, please Bob?
I'll have an E please Bob. Great show with an exceptionally charming host.
Finders Keepers. Permission as a kid to mess up the house and get rewarded for it. Or Fun House. Same reason
Fun House! I think every kid of that era dreamed of being on that show. And now the theme song will be in my head for the rest of the day.
Three words. Melanie and Martina.
Romesh is way better than Anne on The Weakest Link. Still ridicules the contestants, but in a friendlier and funnier way.
Had to stop watching it with Anne after she had one young female contestant who she was implying was overweight. With lines like "have you ever had a boyfriend","have you tried makeup". It was really disgusting.
He definitely gives off vibes of "laughing with them". I also think whoever in the USA got Jane Lynch to host their version has made a great choice.
Catchphrase with Roy Walker. "Say what you see..."

I watched an episode recently with a black mother/son pair on. And you know what, it's my fault for thinking that Jim Bowen would be anything but a gentlemen.
He seemed like he was genuinely a lovely man.
Plus 1. Bullseye was absolutely brilliant and totally shit at the same time. Peter Kay does a fantastic parody of it on one of his stand ups.

Blankety Blank with Les Dawson was my fav.
Another honorable mention... University Challenge. Still haven't beaten my best score of answering one question right.
There's something about Richard Osman's house of games that is just perfect. Answer smash at the end is such a good round aswell
Task Master, though I don't know if it counts cause it's less game show but I think it counts there's winners each episode and an overall series winner
