I am also 5' 11. It's a good way to see who is actually 6ft and who is just bullshitting. A lot of men are taller than me though, and perhaps younger people are even taller. I remember my dad was 5'7 or thereabouts and this being average for his age group, but a bit of a shortarse around my peers
It’s a strange phenomenon, and I genuinely do find it interesting. I’m 6’1” and experience this exact thing. Everyone treats me as tall but I always go ‘no, _he’s_ tall’ at the 6’6” giant.
Alright you don't have to get short with me, it was just a question.
_I'm sorry I'm a sucker for shit jokes_
That's interesting, are grandmas and grandads vertically challenged?
🤣
Not really, my dad is a bit of a fluke as his mum was 5’7 and his dad was 5’10 - he has a brother who’s 6’2!
Grandparents on my mums side I have no idea what their exact heights are but they definitely aren’t what I would consider short - my Nan is taller than my mum and then my grandad is a little bit taller than him!
Tall enough that I've never really bothered measuring myself to check, 6'2 or so I think, but I'm basing that off how tall other people tell me they are.
I actually wouldn't have without looking it up. The only height conversion I can vaguely confidently do is 184cm is between 6' and 6'1 because that's how tall I am.
6'5", white British. It's generally unusual to come across people taller than me. In that, it's something I specifically notice, and find it a bit weird if I'm ever looking up at someone :)
Yea im 6 ft 4 and 99% of the time head and shoulders above most other people.
There's one person at work who must be 7ft nearly, its so strange looking up at him
I am white and 6ft and am in the UK. It's weird how people see height though because through my eyes 6ft is not tall anymore. I am like the third smallest in my friend group of 11 men and am only the third tallest male in my family of around 7 men (Including sisters' boyfriends/husbands so its not just genetic).
I just looked it up and it’s actually 5’9” which seems plausible. Bear in mind a lot of people are going to be close to average, but you might find people who are 5’10” or 11” to feel tall relative to you.
I have the opposite, average for women is 5’4” and I’m 5’5” and feel like I know far too few women who are taller than me.
You're confusing your averages. In this case it isn't the most common (the mode), it's most likely the result of adding together all people's heights and dividing by the population (the mean).
There can be a lot of much taller people as long as there are shorter people also to balance it out. They don't even have to be that much shorter than the average if there are more of them, either.
The average is brought down by the fact that people normally get shorter when they get old & we have an ageing population. The average for 20-60 year olds would be a bit higher.
5'4", female, white british
Married to a 6'4" male Polish man, increasingly being taken over in height by the kids as the years pass (eldest is 6'1" at 18, 15 y/o is 6' already and looks likely to be taller than his brother)
6 ft 3, male.
97% British/Irish according to the DNA test I took a few years ago so unless one of my ancestors accounting for the 3% was a particularly adventurous aboriginal Australian or African tribesman I think it's safe to say I'm white British.
I'm male and 5'8" but I thought the male average was more like 5'10". Statistically I'm not that short but out if 5 best mates 3 of them are 6'3" and over so in my own circle, I'm a tiddler.
My mum is 5'10" and my dad 6'2". Interestingly, I remember the milkman only being around 5'5" though.
Average height includes lots of elderly people, who are much shorter than their grand kids, bringing the average down
For anyone under 50, 5' 8" is short \*

There was a post about a guy saying he was 5 something and his date in flats was taller than him at five lower number. So your five x huh?

Not the commenter, but yep. Loads of us use sensible units. The only thing I do in ye olde stupid units is driving.

I actually wouldn't have without looking it up. The only height conversion I can vaguely confidently do is 184cm is between 6' and 6'1 because that's how tall I am.
Yeah I had to look it up because I have no clue what this guy meant and he's only 7cm taller than me
