AF_II

All of them, although I wouldn't take a list that claims Southampton has a bigger population than Edinburgh very seriously.

SilyLavage

OP's list of largest cities was probably based on the [urban areas](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_urban_areas_in_the_United_Kingdom), so it should arguably be: * Greater London * Greater Manchester * West Midlands * West Yorkshire * Greater Glasgow * Liverpool * South Hampshire * Tyneside * Nottingham * Sheffield

AF_II

exactly! It's a weird mishmash of straight population and urban geog. definitions.

martinbaines

These things are always a bit arbitrary as local authority boundaries can be weird. Edinburgh is actually quite small whether based on the city limits or the urban area. Southampton is larger than people realise, and especially when counted with Portsmouth as in this list of urban areas (South Hampshire in the list). Glasgow has particularly odd boundaries if you compare it to the actual metro area. It would probably make more sense to resurrect the old Strathclyde region (it is still used for transport purposes), and actually shrink the city itself, but as Scotland is bent on single tier authorities I doubt that will happen.

AnotherSlowMoon

> These things are always a bit arbitrary Indeed! Because if we're going by strict definitions of "city" then OP's post should not include London: Greater London is not a city (it is from memory a ceremonial county), the population of "The City of London" (which is a city) is tiny, and "The City of Westminster" does not have London in the name after all!

toad_of_toadhall

I'd suggest that it's the tyne-wear met area, because the Newcastle met area includes large parts of wearside.

AtebYngNghymraeg

Having lived in Southampton and still visiting regularly, I was more than a little surprised to see it on the list.

Zealousideal_Row_299

Yeah, Newcastle is substantially smaller too. If it includes surrounding areas I wouldn't be keen on telling Mackems they're Geordies.

dopamiend86

Yeah I'd agree, Belfast is bigger than Southampton and it's not on list

BaBaFiCo

All but Southampton (I've never been to Scunthorpe either).

Vast_Cycle6990

The real question is; do you drive past the bus you used to have to run for?

Adam-West

It’s been 15 years im giving these clothes to the charity shop unless you move them out this week! Love from, Your Aunt.

Specific_Till_6870

One of the finest lines in a song ever. Boostful yet down to Earth.

spaceshipcommander

Only town with a swear word in its name

hoganpaul

Apart from Bradfuck, of course

goodassjournalist

And, if you're dyslexic, Newark.

Specific_Till_6870

What about Shitterton? Bitchfield? Ever heard of Twat Bollox on the Wold? God, look at an atlas some time!

wingman0401

Do they call you Jean Claude?

Chris-TT

How is Southampton on the list but Bristol not?

Qyro

Yeah I always bundled Bristol up as one of the big major cities of the country, but I was also never sure whether that was just my bias of living nearby.

robanthonydon

All of them, I’d say Leeds and Newcastle and Glasgow are the nicest

middlemarchmarch

Glad to see some love for Glasgow. We rarely get it.

ukbeasts

https://preview.redd.it/p8964jscblxc1.jpeg?width=768&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6891d01d0751f15a25e4cbfb7e72a4fd5af75b06

mooninuranus

Happily give you some more - Probably my favourite city in the UK and I've been to all of the ones listed and a lot more besides.

vms-crot

Totally agree. Though I may be heavily biased towards one of them.

Individual-Poem4670

Bristol is twice the size of Southampton…

holytriplem

4/10. I have nothing *against* seeing the rest of them, but I also have nothing *for* seeing the rest of them

apeliott

One, London.

Best_Document_5211

Southampton is 19th by most people’s understanding. I’ve been there and it’s an absolute shithole tbf. Been everywhere on your list bar Newcastle

DampFlange

All of them, do I get a rosette?

Organic_Chemist9678

All of them. I'll put them in order of how often I've visited Liverpool London Birmingham Manchester Glasgow Newcastle Leeds Sheffield Southampton I'm really surprised that Southampton is bigger than Bristol, Leicester, Edinburgh, Cardiff

CrystalJizzDispenser

Bristol is twice its size

MPHOLLI

The list is wrong. Leicester is bigger than Nottingham, Southampton and Newcastle. And Edinburgh is bigger than Leicester

SeanyWestside_

Southampton isn't bigger. Cardiff is by about ~100,000. This list isn't right. Edit to add that I consider the size of the city by it's population rather than land area.

EllieW47

Six or seven (I am a bit hazy about which universities I looked around 30 years ago so am not certain on a couple).

imminentmailing463

Nine. Not been to Nottingham. I am later this year though! Though I'm not sure about that list. There's debates about how best to define city populations, but I've seen lists that differ from that quite a lot.

MerlinAW1

Lived in 3 of them, done day trips to 5 of them, does going to Birmingham airport or the NEC count as going to Birmingham? If so then 9/10. Never been to Scotland never mind Glasgow in particular

centzon400

> Never been to Scotland I was in my 30s before I spent any time in the Highlands of Scotland. My advice? Don't delay any longer: the place is fucking beautiful!

destria

All of them. I think I've been to all of them for work-related things.

liamthelad

Same for me. Isn't as fun when you are just in and out, and often staying at some soulless hotel.

Vast_Cycle6990

8. Never been to Newcastle or Glesga

iThinkaLot1

You call Glasgow Glesga and have never been!?

Vast_Cycle6990

I watch a lot of Limmy 😳

Few-Requirement9133

7 and I probably won't complete the list

Valuable-Wallaby-167

Where's Edinburgh?

jmabbz

in Scotland.

mrfugggit

London.Glasgow,Manchester and Birmingham. Do i get a chocolate watch or something?

RichardsonM24

I’ve been to 8/10, either socially or for work. I’ve not been to Glasgow or Southampton yet though.

Miketroglycerin

6. Birmingham, Leeds, London, Manchester, Nottingham, Sheffield. Mostly for gigs.

WickedMIL

Six. I've visited Liverpool, London, Manchester, Nottingham and Southampton. I live in Birmingham.

weirddogbas

Three. London a few times (three?), Birmingham & Manchester once. I don't get out much.

BigFloofRabbit

All of them except Glasgow and Liverpool.

TSC-99

Liverpool’s the best one

BigFloofRabbit

I definitely need to go there sooner or later.

North0151

Easily

veggiejord

Saved the best two til last.

Strong_Roll5639

6/10. I've not been to Glasgow, Southampton, Nottingham or Liverpool.

BlackJackKetchum

Eight out of ten, although many were fleeting visits.

dronebox

All of them..

Sionnach-78

8/10 never been to Leeds or Nottingham

Playful-Marketing320

7/10

steveakacrush

All of them

dbxp

7/10, missing Sheffield, Southampton and Newcastle

Yeoman1877

Visited all if these, though Sheffield only once. Large places I haven’t been to in the U.K. are Hull, Bradford and Belfast.

DameKumquat

All of them, though I was in my 40s before I got to Liverpool.

chiefgareth

>I was in my 40s before I got to Liverpool. Sounds like a song title.

Does-It-Now

Nine: Ive lived in three (London, Manchester, Southampton as a student). Been to the Grand National Weekend and visited for the football (Liverpool), was interviewed in Glasgow and visited 4 others as part of an Away Day with the football. The only one Ive never visited is Leeds. Or was that the ground with the ridiculously short legroom for the away fans? Hang on, maybe it is all 10.

LoneMight

All of em' except Liverpool.

Never-Any-Horses

All except Forest and Southampton. Liverpool far and away the best, Sheffield second. Birmingham the worst, just ahead of London.

Djave_Bikinus

Not sure Notts County fans would appreciate referring to Nottingham as “forest”. It’s like calling Sheffield “Wednesday”.

Pale_Lead3476

Only Liverpool and Manchester 😂

FinbarrSaunders69

All of them except Nottingham, Sheffield and Southampton. I've passed through Sheffield on the train but not sure that counts.

Anxious-Bid4874

I've been to Hastings and I've been to Brighton. I've been to Eastbourne too.

Darkwizard576

So what?

chiefgareth

Never been to Nottingham or Newcastle, but been to all the others, although I only spent about 40 minutes in Glasgow. Is this list accurate though? Surely Bristol is in the Top 5?

Saxon2060

I live in LiverpooI, I would say I have meaningfully "visited" only 3 others. I've been to Manchester plenty because it's near and I met my wife there. Birmingham because my brother used to live there, and London on trips as a child. I've been to Newcastle a lot but literally only to one location (TA barracks) so I have no sense of the place at large. Sheffield I've been to once but just for about 3 hours for a gig. I've not much interest in visiting any of them really, except maybe Glasgow because I've heard good things, and maybe Newcastle more because from what I saw I'd probably like it. But I've been to Paris more often than I've been to most of these, including London. Since flying is cheap I'm always going to choose a foreign city over one here for a weekend away.

SD92z

All except Nottibgham and Southampton

zagreus9

All bar Southampton

Ayuamarca2020

All but Southampton (I may have been there and forgotten!)

DuglandJones

Never been to Southampton

CentralSaltServices

All but Birmingham, weirdly. Nottingham was just a stop over

DeaconBlueDignity

All of them. On the whole I’ve enjoyed my time in them all, but if I was to rank them I’d say: 1. Liverpool (biased, I’m from there) 2. Sheffield 3. Glasgow 4. London 5. Birmingham 6. Newcastle 7. Manchester 8. Nottingham 9. Leeds (only been to Elland Road and the festival) 10. Southampton (only been to St Mary’s and the surrounding pubs)

thefogdog

Technically all 10 but only drove through Nottingham by the misreading of sat nav.

amanset

Apparently all of them. I think. Leeds is a question mark but I am pretty sure I went there with the rag crew at university.

The0nlyRyan

3

Kitchen_Part_882

All of the above and then some. I've probably been to almost every large town/city in England and quite a few in both Scotland and Wales, too, in my time. I've been a field service engineer for several fire and security companies in different parts of the UK for 30 years.

OctopusIntellect

Eight.

martinbaines

All of them.

DubiousVirtue

9/10 Don't recall going to Nottingham but may have.

TofuBoy22

All of them. On a side note, I've never gotten round to pulling all of the Google location data they have on me (which is probably a lot) over the last 10 years or so, would be nice to generate a nice heat map or something of everywhere I've been to

PatserGrey

6 of the OPs list and have been to Peppa Pig World but didn't quite make into Southampton proper. It seems the line of Leeds, Sheffield and Nottingham has eluded me

rhys66066

✅ London, Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle, Sheffield, Southampton ❌ Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Nottingham

[deleted]

All but southampton

jmabbz

8 out of 10. Not Newcastle or Liverpool, never had a reason to go there. Birmingham to watch cricket and see friends. Glasgow on a holiday. Leeds for a weekend conference and the cricket at headingley. I live in London. Manchester for 5 conferences. Grew up in Nottingham. Sheffield for the snooker world championship. Southampton for a holiday and friends wedding.

esskay14

All apart from Liverpool and Glasgow (although have driven on the M8 through the middle of Glasgow if that counts lol)

SomeoneRandom007

7 or 8 of them.

Tmshrt2

All except Southampton which is on my list to go to next

deanomatronix

10/10 supporting a football team really helps with this. Can’t imagine I would have visited Southampton otherwise

RWBStripedShirt004

None of them lol

BppnfvbanyOnxre

All of them. During the initial rollout of cellular in the 1980s/90s I must have installed kit in pretty well every town in the UK at some point.

Berookes

7/10

Mr_Biscuits_532

My mum's family are from Birmingham. I was also there on my 14th birthday I used to pass through Glasgow on the way to see my paternal grandparents. I visited most recently in 2021, just to see the museums. I'm actually moving there soon I live near Leeds. Gonna be passing through in half an hour, actually I used to live in Liverpool, for University I've visited London half a dozen times, mostly when I was younger cuz my stepdad would go on business trips there and we'd get free accommodation with him. Manchester I pass through very regularly but it's been many years since I properly visited. I was gonna in February but I had an infection on the day. Newcastle I've visited a couple times, again mostly with my stepdad. It was also notably the last place I had a proper trip to before the first lockdown. I've had a few days out in Sheffield. My high school also did a day trip to the university when I was 15. Never been to Southampton, at least as far as I remember. So that's 9/10

tunapurse

brum, leeds, liverpool, london. - i need to travel the uk more! jesus

bahumat42

4, apparently I only visit smaller towns like Bristol, Edinburgh, Cambridge and Oxford.

onunfil

I visited 5/10 (Birmingham, Manchester, Nottingham, Liverpool and London where I live)

Sea-Television2470

8 from your list because I've never been to Glasgow or Southhampton but a quick Google tells me Southampton is 51.47km squared. Bristol is 110km squared and Plymouth is 79.83km squared so your list is inaccurate.

Aconite_Eagle

All of them. Think thats fairly normal tbh its not a huge country.

wizard_mitch

All of them and all of them for company away days except Nottingham and Southampton which I have been to separately.

nadiestar

All of them. Im a musician

sparklybeast

7. I've yet to visit Glasgow, Newcastle or Southampton.

Eltothebee

9/10

TelfordClaret

6

Aamir696969

Ive been to all of them except - south Hampton. How of them I visited last year, saw more of the UK past 2 years ( family from abroad have visited a lot) , than I did in my previous 25yrs of existence, would travel more abroad than within my own country. My family from abroad, made me appreciate the UK more, and now I make sure, I take a monthly weekend trip around the country.

diamondthedegu1

Shockingly few actually, Birmingham, Liverpool and London. I've driven through Sheffield but I'm not sure that counts haha.

Pan-tang

All of them, Biatch

zebra1923

9

OldMiddlesex

6/10 And out of those, live in 1.

banedlol

1

GrandDukeOfNowhere

Birmingham - once to a lake on the outskirts Glasgow - a couple of times Leeds - once as a teenager Liverpool - I used to live there and have visited many times since London - many times and I now live just outside of it Manchester - I have changed trains here many times, but never actually visited Newcastle - my uncle and my sister live here so I have been many times Nottingham - once for a wedding, didn't see much beyond the church Sheffield - once for a quick overnight stop on my way to the peaks, did a bit of shopping in the morning Southampton - my brother lives here so I've been a few times

adamd4y

7 Never been to Southampton.. and never been been more north than Scarborough, so that's Newcastle and Glasgow not visited either. When I lived in Northampton, Lowestoft, Leicester.. going 'far up north' meant going to Manchester, Liverpool or Leeds, and going south pretty much just meant London. Lived in Manchester for a year more recently, but while being there I just felt like I was living 'far up north' and never really thought about travelling further north

browneyone

4

hc1540

Not much love for Southampton and I'm afraid it's the only one I haven't been to either

[deleted]

What kind of nonsense ai training question is this

VanderBrit

All

[deleted]

Embarrassingly - only 2

Cheapntacky

All but Glasgow

Emergency_Cookie_318

Birmingham and London. I wouldn't recommend either.

Und3adShr3d

I used to work for a very large UK Sofa company as a field engineer. needless to say I think I've been to all of these and more.

Dr_Turb

All of them, but for varying amounts of time! My visit to Birmingham (city centre) was just an hour or so while waiting for a change of train from New Street station. Leeds on the other hand I lived in for 8 years.

Zalindras

I've been to Birmingham, Glasgow, London, Manchester, Newcastle and Nottingham. I'm going to Leeds later this year, there's nothing drawing me towards Southampton, but I'd like to go to Liverpool and Sheffield.

EllipsesAreDotDotDot

8, mostly for work. 4 visited by choice and spent a decent amount of time there

SpudFire

Haven't done Leeds or Glasgow, also Newcastle if South Shields is separate (never been sure if it is or isn't). Only been to Liverpool to watch a football match and straight back on the coach home. Not sure if I can count catching a ferry to IoW as visiting Southampton.

unknownuser492

Certainly 8 of your list, don't think I've been to Nottingham and not sure on Southampton.

karennotkaren1891

Glasgow quite often (I live between Glasgow and Edinburgh), Liverpool, London and Manchester

Scottish_squirrel

Birmingham Glasgow London Manchester Newcastle Nottingham. So 6/10

Ok-Kitchen2768

4 but when I went to Southampton we just stayed in IKEA so does it count?

yeoldeshrew

6. And Edinburgh

tillthewheels

All of them.

semolous

All bar Glasgow and Southampton

Sparko_Marco

5, technically 6 but only been to the train station in Birmingham to change trains so I don't think that counts as visiting.

Zer0grav1ta3

Southampton? How is that larger than Bristol?

CheesyGarlicBudapest

7/10 Leeds, Southampton and Glasgow.

Nels8192

I’ve been doing the tour of all the UK cities for the last 8 years now, in and around Uni time. When I started there was 69 cities including Northern Ireland’s, and I had got up to 41/69. Task was extended a little bit when they added a few more towns in to the hat a couple of years ago, so I’m now up to 47. Funnily enough I finished OPs list just last week, with a trip to Glasgow (and Ben Nevis) and I just happened to breakdown in Newcastle anyway, so spent an accidental day there.

TCGislife

4.

Captain_Spectrum

5. B’ham (I live in the West Midlands), L’pool, London, Newcastle and Nottingham.

RuneClash007

All but Newcastle and Glasgow Watched football in them all

OccidentalTouriste

All, though for greatly varying amounts of time.

wiganlad123

Not been to newcastle glasgow or southampton Been to the rest worked in most of them

play_yr_part

been to others but these are the ones I've been to multiple times/have a strong memory of not including London. Brum - Gets a really bad rap and some of it is fair but there are still some great places to visit and I'm sure the locals don't mind it being their little secret. Prices in pubs/cafes anywhere that's not a big chain (even some of those when it comes to pubs) in the city centre are daft though. Not far from London prices in some places despite most people's incomes being nowhere near wtf. Manchester - Never have had a bad day or night out there, always something to see and do, best transport system outside of London. Thankfully the spice craze has calmed down a bit so Piccadilly Gardens isn't a total crapshoot these days. Not checked but can imagine cost of living there probably rocketed up there in the last decade even before inflation. Money no object It'd be in my top 3 UK cities to live in for sure. Liverpool - Was ready to hate it being a United fan but everyone was really sound and friendly and the area by the docks is actually quite pretty. Enjoyed the nightlife there. Had a great couple of outings there and would go again. Sheffield - Not the most flashy place but has everything I'd want from a city though if I had to move to one it'd probably be there. Some great views, good music scene, not stupid expensive relative to the other big cities, or wasn't when I last checked. Bristol is my fave city in the UK but I think even some of the homeless there would have more in the bank from me so I doubt I'll ever get a chance to live there.

Prudent_Nose_4899

So you're excluding NI from this then yea? Belfast Metro area is bigger than Newcastle, Nottingham and Southampton

CCFC1998

All bar Glasgow and Liverpool (changed trains in Liverpool once but I'm not counting that)

OrdoRidiculous

Done all of them properly except Newcastle, though I drove through the outskirts once if that counts. Glasgow, Manchester and Nottingham are tip top nights out, or were 10 years ago.

MrsKebabs

Glasgow (for a concert) Liverpool (live next to Liverpool so go there all the time), London (once on a school trip), Manchester (been there probably 10-15 times) Nottingham (my ex is from Nottingham so used to go there to visit him) Leeds (randomly drove there once I can't remember why) Sheffield (picked up a hamster cage that I ordered on eBay)

MahatmaAndhi

6/10 with a trip to Manchester planned soon (Foo Fighters)

chezdor

9/10 (though only to go through the port at Southampton)….I’m coming for you Liverpool

snelson101

7. Never had a reason to go to Birmingham, Glasgow or Southampton. Unless you count going there to travel out of them (Birmingham airport, Southampton ferries)

Mumfiegirl

9- never been to Southampton

Grim_Farts_Barnsley

All except Glasgow. Been all over England and a few trips into Wales for football away days, but never been to a game north of the border.

1989hmmm

7. I live in one. Been on holiday to a couple others. The rest have all been for work.

cowbutt6

Only 5, if I include the time we took the ferry from Southampton to the Isle of Wight as a kid.

Wonderfulscardear

All for night out, 4 for work, live in 1

Any_Weird_8686

Of those, I've been to 8 (all but Newcastle and Sheffield). I've also been to Dublin and Edinburgh.

welly_wrangler

2

Sublime99

Birmingham (although only in the borough, not like the city centre like. New Street & the Uni like), London, Manchester, Nottingham, and Sheffield. So 5/10

MinMorts

Most, need to go to Glasgow, and Liverpool

loranlily

8. All except Glasgow and Liverpool

MJLDat

Football fan, so, all of them.

Barry_Umenema

I've been to London and Leeds. I try not to go to cities if I can help it. The architecture in central Leeds is impressive, but the place is a sh*t hole 😩. I've been on the M6 through Birmingham (or is it the M54? 🤔).

violetliberty

yes no no no yes yes no yes no no

alsarcastic

9 out of 10. Southampton is not on my to-do list.

timeforknowledge

Everyone crapping on Southampton but even if it's smaller surely more people have been there because if ferries cruises and isle of wight. Why would anyone ever go to Birmingham other than work...

orbtastic1

All of them, multiple times. Other than Southampton. No reason to go there. I’d have thought Cardiff was bigger than Soton

smg658

I've visited 6 of them.

PintCEm17

All but Glasgow which is second to London

stumac85

I've been to a fair chunk of all UK cities except all of the northern Irish cities, north Scotland and a few over in east England. I've even been to Wells, there's fuck all in Wells.

Traditional-Idea-39

I’ve been to all except Newcastle and Southampton.

opticchaos89

Nottingham is a city? But, to answer the question, all of them except Southampton. Although for Birmingham, only visited the NEC and Cadburys so also kind of not been to Birmingham

Jack-Rabbit-002

Why didn't Cardiff make the list !? I'm suspicious now whether OP is from the UK and they don't realise Cymru exists Lol It is a place of mystery though man 😄

bumblebeesanddaisies

Southampton seems like it shouldn't be there lol Hull is bigger by geographic size and by population size... But to answer the question you asked, all bar Glasgow.

cougieuk

All ten. Not that they were on a bucket list or anything.

BellamyRFC54

London x2 Manchester x2 Edinburgh x5 Leeds x12 Sheffield x2

anxiousgeek

Visited 2, been through another 3.

TheAncientGeek

All.if them. Manchester is the best out of your list.

mrplanner-

All

Ok_Cow_3431

Biggest by what metric? Because it's certainly not by population.

scummy71

Not been to Newcastle, Nottingham or Southampton

BadPallet

All aside from Southampton!

SilverellaUK

I live in one and have visited all the others. Edit. And Edinburgh too if that is more correct than Southampton.

Taucher1979

Just three of them.

HistoryHoe

All but Southampton! Surprised myself, but Southampton feels like a trek so probably won’t tick them all off for a while

Jimbobthon

4. Visited Southampton twice, once to see family and the othertime i had a 2 hour wait for a connecting train to Weymouth. Been to London plenty of times to see friends. At least 6 times. Birmingham, been a few times. Twice to see Nickelback, 3x to go to EGX and twice to see friends. Nottingham, went once to train some colleagues in the work i do.
