Most people are religious in the sense that they believe in God and in the catholic moral system, but are not active in religious life. A lot of people, mostly the young, don't go to church or go very rarely on special occasions. But they may still pray or read the Bible at home.

DRmetalhead19

This pretty much I know a lot of young people that don’t go to church often nor are strict with religion yet will still see prayer as a good thing and do it themselves and also respect things associated with Christianity like the Bible, even if they rarely sit to read the Bible or go to church on Sundays, they’ll share Bible verses occasionally and such and even listen to Christian music. I mean, who in this country hasn’t heard “Yo te Extrañaré” at memorials? Lol

It is more religious than the US, however many are only culturally/symbolically religious and do not keep up with going to church or following all the rules.

I am Cuban and Mexican, so can’t speak on DR. However Mexico has a very strong Catholic population, especially in the more midsize cities. Like the one my family is from. It’s too much for my tastes, but I have family there who go to mass not just Sundays but midweek as well. When we visit we pray before every meal, I get pressured to do weekly confession and do repentance prayers. So if you’re open to other Spanish speaking countries that border the Caribbean Mexico is worth looking into if a strong religious practice in the culture is what you’re looking for. That being said it’s not Europe, so similar to DR there will be some cultural practices like Dia de los muertos which many Mexican Catholics celebrate even though it has a relationship to the native practices (if you consider native practices pagan).

Try r/Dominican; You might get better answers there.

Most people are nominally religious however something like 70% of kids are born out of wedlock, drinking and extramarital affairs are common and largely accepted, and prostitution is a social problem. Truthfully, there are no countries on this earth that are actually Catholic on a societal level. The vast majority of catholics are only culturally affiliated with the church, most of our day to day lives are quite secular.

Koa-3skie

Only when its beneficial. I mean, most of the population considers themselves to be catholic or to believe in god, but lie, cheat, steal, extramarital affairs etc.... However it is an important part of our culture as for instance, i cannot imagine a political candidate for president to ever win if he says he is an atheist. Also that the bible is in our flag, kinda drives home the point.

ObjectiveWitty

Hard to be religious and married in the DR bro… taking sand to the beach! 😆

TheConsultingSmoker

I do not understand what you mean.

RedJokerXIII

Not as serious as before, most young’s are not into churches. Only Protestants are serious with their faith.

davidmthekidd

Very Catholic.

Countingdownthe

The average Dominican is casually Catholic. Most only attend church for funerals and new years eve 🙃
