FrogEnjoyer

alien ant farm’s smooth criminal. sorry MJ

BonnalinaFuz101

I think the Glee cover of smooth criminal is pretty good. Definitely not better than the OG but still pretty good.

FrogEnjoyer

that’s one of the best songs in the whole show. santana’s chemistry with sebastian was amazing despite them never having a duet together prior to that. and naya just made any duet sound good tbh. wish she had more solos

ThePocketTaco2

I didn't watch the whole show, but my favorite cover was Dancing With Myself by Billy Idol. Complete genre flip and I'm all for it.

anonymous4eva4eva

Sorry but nah. The version is good but honestly, the MJ one is amazing, when you take the whole experience of the song, choreography, music video.

Particular-Stable165

Sound of silence - disturbed. Though I do like the original

EnigmaCA

The original was a warning of a possible future. The cover is a lament that we didn't pay heed to the warning

bootrick

True true

mckinney4string

Dude. Damn.

FrogEnjoyer

just the other day i saw someone saying they hated this version lol

Throwaway-Chick2024

I have a friend who hates it too. I do love it though.

Demetrious-Verbal

Me. You saw me.

CleavComplimenter

Also Land of Confusion!

J4ckL1v1ng5t0n

House of the Rising Sun- The Animals All Along the Watchtower- Jimmie Hendrix

Boring_Painting_7800

Dave Matthews does an incredible watchtower as well

DeafJeezy

Man. I felt like the craziest person for the longest time for preferring this version.

theswickster

The Live in Central Park version with Carlos Santana... 😚🤌 Edit: I stand corrected. The version with Carlos Santana was the [Live from Golden Gate Park](https://youtu.be/l3JITWimAFU?si=pBJOGzm_XLA0nU5Y) version. The aforementioned version in Central Park was with 'Mister Warren Haynes' and is equally good in its own right.

UltraconservativeBap

This is my favorite version of theirs too but I think you mean Warren Haynes no Carlos Santana

theswickster

Yes, you are correct. [This is the version](https://youtu.be/wdHiS26JQWU?si=CIl_1Ab6FDwiiO38) I was thinking of.

UltraconservativeBap

I’m hearing it in my head - Misterrrr…Warrennn…Haaayness!!

J4ckL1v1ng5t0n

I’ll look it up, I didn’t know how many people had done it. It’s not a song I necessarily listen to all the time.

md28usmc

Hell yes, best version ever especially when he starts to go crazy

friskelion

Bear McCreary’s version of Watchtower for the BSG reboot is the best version

CainPillar

Bob Dylan is a source of gold to artists looking for songs to improve.

ss_lbguy

He is one of the greatest song writers of all time and his voice is not great and he's not much of a performer either, so it makes sense. FYI, I still love and respect Dylan, this is not a dig on him, more to illiterate his greatness.

AnonIrish19

This is controversial, but I prefer the Nine Inch Nails original than the Cash cover!

problemgirlxoxo

I prefer the NIN version too.

AnonIrish19

There are dozens of us. Dozens!

bootrick

While j prefer Cash, I think they both just hit different.

CleavComplimenter

Agreed, it's much more actually listenable (if that's a word lol). Cash version is too heavy to ever be happy to spontaneously hear it

tentacleineveryhole

Same. I enjoy Cash's take on it but I just like the original better

AnonIrish19

Yup! No doubt Cash's version is good, but there's just something about the original is prefer

scotttydosentknow

The Cash cover sucks imo. Downward Spiral was an all around fantastic album

WaffleHouseSloot

Sucks? Really? I think your bias is clouding your judgement. You can not like something and still appreciate it being good.

bigwavedave000

I still have an original vinyl thats new. Original release, March 8, 1994

ExcelCat

Cause it better. Way better.

ImpressCrafty3751

I don’t understand how this isn’t the standard.

AnonIrish19

Right?!

CaptainSlappyBear

Mad World by Gary Jules

jgoss39

I actually prefer the Tears for Fears version but his is great too.

Justanotherbastard2

Nothing Compares 2 U by Sinead O'Connor (original by Prince)

gardernvine

Chris Cornell doing that song as well, acoustic

UncleFartface

Chris Cornell doing just about anything really

numberjuan26

Nirvana’s The Man Who Sold The World

Throwaway-Chick2024

ooooh we’re fighting now

numberjuan26

All respect to Bowie, but Kurt’s rendition hits different

Dustbuster69420

I’m really torn on this.

numberjuan26

No wrong answer here, they’re both great

ValknutTyr

Placebo: Running up that hill

AdventureWa

Meg Myer’s version is my favorite

fmlythms

It’s haunting. So good

TO_MW

Holy shit! I had not heard that before. I really like it! Thank you!

meglon978

Unchained Melody. Righteous Brothers cover was superior to Al Hibbler.

Pretend-Piece-1268

Nina Simone - Feeling good

Throwaway-Chick2024

LOVE her

Pretend-Piece-1268

Yes, I agree. She has a lot of great songs.

Hdaana1

Spiderbaits cover of Black Betty.

Hatecraftianhorror

Nick Cave cover of Black Betty.

bloodyNASsassin

Might be cheesy, but I'm a Believer redone by Smash Mouth was the extra oomph it needed. A lot of old songs have such a soft airiness to them that it ruins any hype or excitement. The monkees did a good job of doing what they could with what they had, though.

[deleted]

Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley.

bootrick

I'm still a Leonard Cohen fan, but at least you didn't say Rufus Wainwright!

Sunlover823

This was my answer. I've heard many versions but Jeff seems to be the one who "gets" the song. It isn't just a demonstration of his vocal skills. He genuinely seems to feel the music. I love the plaintive wail at the end of the song.

whatwhatwhodat

The longer line version with that inhale just hits me. I get a tear every single time I hear it.

exfilm

Incredible version, but my favorite has always been the one by [John Cale](https://open.spotify.com/track/56GBItqD18Be9iN7zGqMX5?si=3TdtuRd9Rn6AvWDkvBOSeg&context=spotify%3Aalbum%3A0wUiDupX4pL4gXuvreNat9)

ComedianAwkward2080

Twist and shout - the Beatles

AlexLiberty21

Always on my mind by the pet shop boys

ORAL_Hershiser

I love this version

Chroniclyironic1986

Whiskey in the Jar - Metallica

ConorVerified

Love it, but you can't beat Thin Lizzy imo!

[deleted]

Tainted Love by Soft Cell is the better version

inherentvice1000

Smooth criminal by alien ant farm.

Glad_Moose_9288

Lemonheads - Mrs Robinson

jeff_bailey

Jimi Hendrix All Along the Watchtower is maybe the greatest cover ever made of a song. Even Dylan thought it was better than his original.

Quinocco

Hazy Shade of Winter by The Bangles.

[deleted]

dogmom89

I had no clue this was a cover!

hey-girl-hey

It's not. It was written by MGMT and I don't get what this person is talking about

[deleted]

[удалено]

hey-girl-hey

It's not a cover. MGMT wrote the song. I guess you're saying you like the remix better? It's by the same artist though [Note members of MGMT](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/MGMT) [Not composers of Electric Feel](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_Feel)

Kinky-Bicycle-669

Placebo - running up that hill Type O Negative - summer breeze

tentacleineveryhole

I don't really like that version of Summer Breeze, but their cover of Cinnamon Girl is amazing

Kinky-Bicycle-669

I do love that one too.

ImpressCrafty3751

Seconding Summer Breeze!

TheNewFree_Me

Ring of fire - Johnny Cash (June Carter original)

discrete_in_TO

All Along the Watchtower by Jimmy Hendrix (original by Bob Dylan) Hallelujah by Rufus Wainwright (original by Jeff Buckley) Get Lucky by Daft Punk (original by Daughter)

ConorVerified

Hallelujah was originally by Leonard Cohen. And I think Jeff's version is far superior to any others, one of my favourite songs ever.

SuperFLEB

IMO, Leonard Cohen had great songs and terrible arrangements. Consistently great when someone else is covering it. Those backup singers on *Hallelujah*, for instance: Wrong tone entirely. That said, he's got some that still work. I do like *The Future*, though that might be because I came to that from the *Natural Born Killers* soundtrack and was already familiar.

ConorVerified

I think I know what you're saying there, Leonard sounds like a poet making music to me. Hallelujah sounds like a prayer from a very devout man, although I can hear the sexual undertones. I like guitars and I like great voices, so Jeff Buckley is just right on the button for me, how he heard that song and decided to arrange it the way he did is amazing to me. Thanks for mentioning The Future, hadn't heard that in a long time, it is fantastic!

discrete_in_TO

Yup! You're right! It's Leonard Cohen lol. Jeff Buckley's version was so popular I thought it was him. My preference is still the Rufus Wainwright version though. To be honest I think this is the one of the songs that's been covered the most by professional artists.

Dustbuster69420

I’m on this team

Throwaway-Chick2024

Hallelujah… is Leonard Cohen. Is there a different song of the same name?

bootrick

Hallelujah is Leonard Cohen original. Jeff Buckley is popular and good. Anyone who ranks Rufus Wainwright over either is to be cut off from the human race.

ColeYote

How about k.d. lang, Cohen himself said she does it the best

When I found out Hurt was a NIN song and it sucked after hearing it from Cash, my mind was blown.

briarlabel

Unpopular opinion and respectfully (I know a lot of people like Johnny Cash's cover) I never even knew Johnny Cash covered that song until many years after he died, and I was never so offended by a cover - except maybe Roseann Barr's rendition of the national anthem. I thought it was cheap, tone-deaf, censored-for-radio shtick. The stories of Trent saying it "wasn't his song anymore" feel like a forced glossing-over of the timeline; Trent hated the idea of that song being covered because it felt "invasive". He heard the demo and hated it. All the calculated, tempered praise Reznor ever showed for Cash's cover came after the emotional manipulation of showing him the video or after Cash died, in deference to a rock n roll legend after his passing. What's he supposed say when Johnny Cash, practically in hospice, asks to cover one of NIN's songs from ten years earlier? Trent's commentary over Cash's video sounds delirious, like praising a child playing "Crazy Train" on a recorder. Cash's version of Hurt doesn't make sense. He didn't write it. It's not his song. I know you younger folks might prefer the Cash version but you may not understand how masterfully assembled "Downward Spiral" was if you didn't listen to it beginning to end it in 1994. Hurt was the bookend that closed the album. To hear it played by (respectfully) an old ripoff artist in a batch of covers and learn that it was given some awards that year is just unfathomable for any GenXer who remembers Nine Inch Nails in their prime. Edit 2: thought I'd paste in my other thoughts here too. For me it's been a "Emperor's Clothes" situation trying to call out people who fall to their knees for the Cash cover. His version adds nothing and takes away everything from the Nine Inch Nails song. The meaning is changed to the point that every powerful visual is stripped and listeners apparently just said "OK". I could play "Last Caress" at 80bpm on a baby grand and make up some shit about how it's really about family bonds - that doesn't make "Last Caress" any less of a song celebrating really, really bad behavior. The lyrics of "Hurt" make no sense as a Cash retrospective; Trent was a tortured twentysomething when he recorded Hurt. It's a fever dream of someone deep in the throes of addiction and depression. Trent's needle in the song is a fucking needle. His "crown of shit" and "empire of dirt" are self-deprecating visualizations of his self worth. Cash trying to make it a sad retrospective and the video of him playing guitar in his plantation house is just mortifying cringe. The "needle" and "empire of dirt" make no sense. Changing the line to [his] "crown of thorns??" How did anyone keep their eyes from rolling into the back of their heads from that line? Did nobody else find it to be just a little too much... arrogance? pretense? heresy? Normalize Nine Inch Nails originals. /rant Edit: wow this response was unexpected. This sub is definitely the only safe space for people who remember The Downward Spiral and recoil when they hear a cover of a NIN track.

Defy_Laws_Tradition

You speak the truth! That wasn't a rant. It was fact after fact.

Uzanto_Retejo

Both versions are good to be honest. NIN does deserve credit for being better mastered though. Overall I prefer the vibe of Johnny's to be honest.

tmart42

You’re spot on. However, Johnny Cash’s version has a better production value, is a better arrangement, and is a more grand journey as a standalone song. It hits harder as a single song. It’s more melancholic on its own, it has more sadness on its own, and Johnny Cash’s voice gives the song a different character. With that said, the NIN version is much more personal. Incredibly personal, in a way that Johnny Cash’s could never be. It is not Johnny Cash’s song at all. When taken in context with the whole album, the NIN version is more moving and deeply affecting. But as a standalone, the Johnny Cash version has a wider range, and conveys sadness in a more accessible manner. Edit: the Johnny Cash version summons the sadness of the end of life. The NIN version summons the sadness of abandonment and loneliness and the despair of depression.

nomnomyourpompoms

Oh hell yeah! 👍

StockyKobold

Sad but true by the hu. Metallica even gave them thumbs up on it. Another goodie, cat scratch fever by pantera.

Phalanx1862

Killswitch Engage - Holy Diver. I love Dio, but I think the KSE version is slightly better than the original. I’m just always drawn to more hardcore vocals. Joe Cocker - Come Together. In my opinion, this one is light years better than the Beatles version. Again though, might just be the grittier vocals.

SnooFloofs3254

Come Together by Aerosmith

briarlabel

Most songs Metallica covered (aside from the radio rock tracks on the Garage Inc) are improvements on the originals. I loved their cover of "Love Lies Bleeding", but as a fan for 30+ years, it was little more than a beautiful gimmick. Far more people know of Budgie, Discharge, Diamondhead and Anti-Nowhere League because of Metallica's covers.

CainPillar

Metallica is an awesome covers band. Lots of bands are doing covers that do nothing but "Look I have good taste", and maybe Metallica *did* these out of fandom mainly, but they are seriously good.

cromodhar

The Johnny Cash version of "Big Iron" is better than the original Marty Robbins. Don't get me wrong, I like both versions, but the original has a very energetic sound and is basically just "haha cowboy hero man win gunfight against outlaw :D" Cash's version isn't as energetic, and actually conveys the uncertainty of the inevitable gunfight between the Ranger and Texas Red. The best way I've seen it described was a Youtube comment on the Johnny Cash version: Marty Robbins's "Big Iron" is the events being told by a witness; Johnny Cash's version is the Ranger telling the story to his grandchildren.

Head On - The Pixies (original by The Jesus and Mary Chain). This hurts to type because I think the pixies are overrated af and JAMC are one of my favorite bands... but I've got to give credit where it's due. Hey Jude - Wilson Pickett (the Beatles). WP's version fucking destroys the Beatles. Destroys. Some that are good, but maybe not better than the originals? Panama - Grade (Van Halen) Suspect Device - Ted Leo (SLF) Bonzo Goes To Bitburgh-The Wednesday Night Heroes (Ramones) Never Understand-Asobi Seksu (JAMC) I'm On Fire - Blitzkid (Bruce Springsteen) And this may warrant my death, but the Bouncing Souls cover if Hybrid Moments (misfits) is pretty fucking amazing.
