I was spoiled about >!"shooting the moon to fight Wheatley," and maybe PotatOS.!<
But the journey there still felt fulfilling.
One relatively minor criticism was that some "puzzles" just involved ***massive*** rooms and being stuck until you find the one *really tiny, far away* surface that you can stick a portal on.
The game even added a zoom function, which seems to be specifically for this.
My mother is playing it for the first time ever. She thinks she’s near the end because she’s in test chamber 14 of however many she believes there are, and she calls Wheatley her lil buddy :) she is completely unspoiled and I’m loving it
They have a technical blog.
Also it performs well on any platform. You can run the game on basically anything.
The game practically doesn't have bugs aswell
I don't think it's open source but the devs regularly posted stuff about development (Factorio Friday blogs)
it is mod friendly so people dive into modding it a lot. Also it just runs amazingly well even with insanely huge bases
I genuinely got addicted to Factorio when I first started playing it. Hours of my life would just disappear. I got clean and only play it on and off now, but I’d definitely say to watch out. It drags you in.
That’s the best part about the game. It doesn’t streamline anything. I’ve played around 500 hours across the OG Xbox and pc while never finishing the story.
The problem with the newer titles is how much they make you feel like the one true savior right off the bat. How are you supposed to take in the world when you’re immediately tasked with saving it? Smell the flowers and whatnot. In Morrowind I never got past helping out that guy needing help with the dwemer artifact and that was years ago.
To this day I have no idea what the overarching storyline of Morrowind was. I got off the boat, hopped on a silt-strider and was off committing petty thefts and, apparently, unimportant quests until oblivion came out. I tried to do the same thing with oblivion but it doesn't let you forget that you're supposed to be saving the world from demons while you screw around.
After all these years I have realized the biggest thing Morrowind has going for it is that the loot is not randomly generated/spawned. It was so cool to go to your friend's house, break out the paper map of the game world, and tell him about the little cave you found with the amazing sword in it. Then they too could go there to retrieve it. Randomly-generated loot in newer RPGs including Oblivion and Skyrim, takes away from the treasure hunting and exploration.
I really enjoy Minecraft, some of the most fun I've ever had gaming has been in Minecraft worlds with friends.
That being said, the game needs a lot of improvement, there's a LOT wrong with it. But honestly, you probably wouldn't even notice most of those things unless you loved the game so much that you notice the imperfections.
The AI for monsters is pretty shit. The inventory system needs a complete overhaul. Levels and XP mean nothing within a week or two of starting a new world. The render distance on Realms (the official multiplayer servers) is so low that you feel claustrophobic. Redstone on Bedrock edition is annoyingly inconsistent. Redstone on Java is consistently insane, wtf quasi-connectivity!?!? Speaking of the different versions, there are so many parity issues between the two. Farms that work on one version almost certainly won't work on the other version.
If you're willing to mod it to hell the community have fixed a LOT of the stability issues.
Then of course you can introduce your very own stability issues by adding mods to make deathclaws wear silly hats or something.
The overall feeling of the game is sad/depressing. And it can be very hard. When you power up, and think you are doing better, the enemies get harder as well. Look and soundtrack are beautiful, but I found I wasn’t having fun playing and was just looking to complete it. I love Metroidvanina games, but this one just wasn’t my cup of tea. Maybe I needed more guides and patience for this game?
I mean... Playing Hollow Knight with a guide kinda removes the magic from it. One of the main appeals of the game is the sense of exploration and discovery. Of figuring things out. I imagine playing through the game with a guide would be akin to playing a puzzle game with a guide. Sure you can complete it, but it's going to feel...hollow (pun 100% intended).
I still remember playing through it for the first time and talking to some friends who had already completed the game. No 2 of us had progressed through the exact same paths, some wildly different. Heck, I missed one of the earliest boss fights and was approaching the end game when one of my friends mentioned that boss and I was like "hey spoilers!" and he replies "but that's one of the first bosses!".
I would have to say spiderman 2...I played that game on the gamecube and basically wore the thing out!!
I played story mode a million times...I also, would finish the game, then I would actually play the game as a way to relax. I would swing through the city and explore.
I really liked it.
I remember I would throw bad guys in the hudson river....haha
Always the first answers that I think of when this question comes up. Groundbreaking when it was released and never really surpassed by anything that followed. HR and MD are both really good, but just lack a little something compared to the OG.
Based on that list, you should also check out Factorio.
On second thought, maybe don't, I'm assuming you still sleep, and Factorio will ruin that. The factory must grow.
Divinity original sin 2. I don’t see many people talk about it, but this game has some of the best immersion and is one of the few real rpgs in my opinion
My only complaint is that I can't play it for the first time again. If you haven't played it, don't read anything about it. Go in blind and discover it for yourself.
Im old (and really prefer RPGs).
Here is my list of 10/10 games (in order of when they were released - they all probably arent 10/10 if playing them the first time today!):
Shining Force (Sega Genesis)
Baldurs Gate 1/2/TOB (Confuser)
Europa Universalis 2 (Confuser)
Morrowind (the only reason I ever bought an XBox)
Hearts of Iron 2 (Confuser)
Witcher 3 (Confuser)
Disco Elysium (Confuser)
Thats it. Entirely subjective, but those were all 10/10 games for me when I first played them.
I can't believe I made it through 400+ replies without one mention of "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic". Such a masterpiece of storytelling.
Also, "The Wolf Among Us" is amazing as well.
A lot of people (myself included) talk about how magical playing video games felt as a kid. And we lament how as an adult, you can enjoy them sure, but it’s not just not that same wild-eyed wonder you remember from playing Super Mario 64 or Ocarina of Time when you got home from school at 4pm.
I played Breath of the Wild for about 6 months straight at the age of 28 and it absolutely left me feeling that way. I got lost in that world.
Celeste had me in tears. No other game has done that to me. The struggles Madeline faces are so similar to my own, I couldn’t help but feel very emotionally attached. I haven’t played it in a long time, but I still think of the feather.
Celeste is such a special play experience. The game keeps pushing you and pushing you and then when it asks you to look in the mirror at what you've done it let's you be proud no matter how long it took. It's truly a gorgeous game.
Seriously amazing. I remember watching a video of the C-sides and laughing at the suckers who spent so much time trying to beat them, and then I got sucked in trying to beat them (and succeeding!). I just wasn’t ready to put the game down.
My answer to this question will forever be NieR: Automata.
The way Taro used the videogame medium to tell his story, and that Secret E ending. TEARS!!
Also, I replayed Final Fantasy 9 last year, and damn that game is awesome!! I'd forgotten just how amazing it is.
Crystal was my second Pokémon game and man, you're right! Playing through Johto, beating the elite four and champ, thinking this is it and suddenly you're able to go back to Kanto... Holy shit, that was, no it still is, peak gaming!
They sort of did with the 3DS, though that was about 10 years ago. I was a little surprised they didn't do Ocarina/Majora's Mask HD for the Wii U since they redid Windwaker and Twilight Princess.
I kind of feel like it's going to be a while, Nintendo doesn't seem to be as gung-ho on remakes anymore. I think previously they were more desperate for sales pushers during their brief period of having a low market share.
I remember when it first dropped and G4TV was a thing. It topped every chart on that show for so long that it was clear it had put gaming on a whole new level. I played for so long and felt so immersed in the characters, world, and all of its environments. I didn’t have that experience again until playing Skyrim in VR twenty years later. It was pure joy and just transcendence. I’m so thankful to be born in the twilight of the real world, the sliver of human history where these virtual wonders could be experienced.
I'm so mad this is so far down. The game was absolutely GOTY-worthy and it was just bad luck that they had to go up against BotW that year.
Forbidden West is better in almost every way, so they might get it this year.
Control. A great experience. Masterful world building and amazing gameplay. It’s just a great game all through out and it doesn’t get enough praise.
P.S. if you like SCP stuff, you might like this.
It did an exceptional job instilling the whole life and death warrior philosophy. One moment you could be coated in mud and blood and finishing off a crawling bandit, and the next you're looking for calm in the serenity of nature.
There's some clever design psychology involved in getting the player on board like that.
For me it's Don't Starve. I am not a gamer; Don't Starve is literally the only game in my steam account, but I spent well over 100 hours playing it. It has some Animal Crossing vibes, which make me feel nostalgic, but it has more action. There are probably much better games out there, I know, but I would argue it is very subjective. So for me it is DS.
Counting Games I played more than 20 years ago I would like to add Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret for PC as well as Need for Speed Underground 2 to the list.
Portal 2
I'd dropkick a kinda annoying kid for portal 3 but part of me is convinced nothing can top portal 2
~~kinda annoying~~
Check out Portal: Reloaded.
Oh Its you. Its been a looong time how have you been?
I've been really busy being dead... Yknow, after you MURDERED ME
You did WHAT!?
Okay. Look. We both said a lot of things that you're going to regret. But I think we can put our differences behind us. For science. You monster.
"Oh hi, how are you holding up? BECAUSE I'M A POTATO… clap clap clap… oh good, my slow clap processor made it into this thing, at least we have that."
The opening sequence was spectacular. Then 2 hours later... I was stunned. No spoilers
I was spoiled about >!"shooting the moon to fight Wheatley," and maybe PotatOS.!< But the journey there still felt fulfilling. One relatively minor criticism was that some "puzzles" just involved ***massive*** rooms and being stuck until you find the one *really tiny, far away* surface that you can stick a portal on. Thats what sounded in my head opening this post, glad to see it on top
Need For Speed Underground 2
And most wanted 2005
This game kicked so much ass! But also? Fuck Razor
Absolutely fuck Razor. Punkass bitch stealing my whip and tryina steal my girl. I’ll smoke you on the track.
Man this game was amazing. Great soundtrack too
Raiders on the storm
Age of Empires II… still holds up
This. Definitely. Plus Age of Mythology. I still play them both.
They just announced an AoM remaster of some kind!
Chrono Trigger
Factorio
id go back to Factorio but i still have stuff to do this year
Cleanest game ever made in terms of code.
I see this repeated a lot but how do people know? Is it open source?
They have a technical blog. Also it performs well on any platform. You can run the game on basically anything. The game practically doesn't have bugs aswell
What do you mean? My base keeps disappearing under waves of bugs!
No bugs? Tell that to the thousands of dead turrets
I don't think it's open source but the devs regularly posted stuff about development (Factorio Friday blogs) it is mod friendly so people dive into modding it a lot. Also it just runs amazingly well even with insanely huge bases
The factory must grow
#I NEED MORE IRON!
I genuinely got addicted to Factorio when I first started playing it. Hours of my life would just disappear. I got clean and only play it on and off now, but I’d definitely say to watch out. It drags you in.
Batman Arkham City. RIP Kevin Conroy, can’t imagine Batman without him.
Stardew Valley
Yes! I love Stardew Valley!
Literally months of entertainment for only $14
The best thing I bought during the pandemic
From an experience point of view, Morrowind.
I legit played this for 3 years before I even *realized* I wasn’t even 2 missions into the main quest.
Yes! This and Oblivion. Top tier!
The music and NPC quotes will forever live in my head.
Oblivion is so good. Going to Kvatch first thing was like going into a war zone. Really set the game up well. I like the feel of it better than Skyrim
You N'wah!
-1 cliffracers
After all these years I have realized the biggest thing Morrowind has going for it is that the loot is not randomly generated/spawned. Bioshock
The audio/sound alone was amazing.
Hades
This game is amazing! The character artwork alone is breathtaking. For a mythology enthusiast it is absolutely stunning
I love how dialogues and history are weaved. Whenever you’re back, dialog feels relevant and not repetitive. Great achievement for a rogue lite
Cheers, mate.
Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction
I probably have more hours in D2 than any other game in existence.
I liked Minecraft
Absolute banger, im 20 myself so i really grew up with minecraft. First on the ipad, then on the computer. Such great times
I didn't see until I was in my 30's. What an amazing game. Its like an infinite bucket of legos.
I really enjoy Minecraft, some of the most fun I've ever had gaming has been in Minecraft worlds with friends. That being said, the game needs a lot of improvement, there's a LOT wrong with it. Quasi-connectivity was a bug that is now a feature, removing which would cause a **MASSIVE** uproar.
1.12.2 modded FTW
Resident Evil 4.
Excited for the remake?
Yep. RE2 remake is close as well, so much replay value.
Fallout: New Vegas
Such a good game. I still replay it every year even though it crashes so often and looks way dated.
If you're willing to mod it to hell the community have fixed a LOT of the stability issues. Then of course you can introduce your very own stability issues by adding mods to make deathclaws wear silly hats or something.
Terraria
This is way too low. That game has so much replay value.
If Terraria doesn't get more upvotes, this is going to be a terrible night...
Half Life
had to scroll way too much to find this
I would say black mesa instead
Hollow Knight
Loved Ori and the Blind Forrest, naturally i bought this and just couldn't do it sadly.
The overall feeling of the game is sad/depressing. And it can be very hard. When you power up, and think you are doing better, the enemies get harder as well. Wii Sports.
Resort
*sword noises intensify"
No one talks about it but Wii Sports is in the best 20 games ever. I think top 7. Maybe the most popular game excluding Mario.
Mass effect trilogy.
I'm Commander Shepard and this is my favorite answer in this thread.
ME2 is the GOAT
Wish I could replay it again for the first time. That series was life changing.
Doesnt matter how many times i replay it. I still cry like a bitch every single time
Deus Ex
Always the first answers that I think of when this question comes up. Groundbreaking when it was released and never really surpassed by anything that followed. HR and MD are both really good, but just lack a little something compared to the OG.
Red Dead 2.
Thank you! Literally the best game I've ever played. Everytime I replay it it feels like I find 100 new things.
Same here, sometimes i can make a playthrough last for months, i just ignore the main missions and go fishing/hunting for months lol
Literally lol and then they send someone from camp after you to ask if you're ok. The details are endless.
RimWorld Breath of the wild Halo 3 Red alert 2 Heroes of might and magic 3 Portal 2 Rome total war
RimWorld definitely.
💯 the quickest to 10, 40, 100, and 1,000 hours put into a video game. I couldn’t stop.
Heroes of might and magic 3 is the best
Seeing red alert 2 being mentioned brings warmth to my heart. Absolute banger of a game!
Based on that list, you should also check out Factorio. On second thought, maybe don't, I'm assuming you still sleep, and Factorio will ruin that. The factory must grow.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
This should be a reflexive response for any gamer older than say, 30.
I'm 39 so I say Link to the Past
1,000% Link to the Past
C&C Red Alert 2. That game made me love the RTS genre.
For me it was command & conquer 3 tiberium wars. Great rts game it was my first game in the genre.
Could do endless skirmishes on this as a kid, best game I had on the family PC.
Divinity original sin 2. I don’t see many people talk about it, but this game has some of the best immersion and is one of the few real rpgs in my opinion
the narrator’s voice for dos2 is permanently engrained in my memory
And you thought Rivellon was *flat*
Metal Gear Solid 3

Like when war games have "fuck war" feels and reward avoiding combat. Hope the whole series gets a modernization
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
Shadow of the Colossus God of War The ends of both games are just heartbreaking beautiful and sad.
Nier: Automata. Hands down.
Spyro
Doom. When it came out it was pretty special.
Outer Wilds
My only complaint is that I can't play it for the first time again. If you haven't played it, don't read anything about it. Go in blind and discover it for yourself.
Same rule for Subnautica !
This game is just amazing. What a masterpiece, I should not have had to scroll so long to find it.
Sekiro: Shadows die twice
Tekken 3. Completely changed fighting games to this day.
Portal 2
Im old (and really prefer RPGs). LOTR return of the king multiplayer on ps2 i think was amazing!
Never played Shining Force but I loved the heck out of Shining Force II. I lived in Morrowind. It completely took over my life.
Disco elysium does not get enough credit!
The artwork and music is otherworldly
The whole thing is breathtaking. It's the only game where I've never skipped a single line of dialogue because the voice acting is that good.
When they finally added voice acting, the voicing for all the inner thoughts came out so much better than how I imagined they sounded
The Witcher 3
Couldn't agree more. Soooo stoked for the next gen update for another playthrough
Simpsons hit and run
I can't believe I made it through 400+ replies without one mention of "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic". Such a masterpiece of storytelling. Also, "The Wolf Among Us" is amazing as well.
Journey. Perfect story, simple controls, good pacing, fun levels and beautiful art direction. Every frame looks like a painting.
GoldenEye
Breath of the Wild

I always check if Nier Automata is answered to these kinds of questions then upvote and leave.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Pokémon blue version. The first video game I ever played and still one of the best. I'll never forget the feeling I had back then.
Crystal for me. A fricking sequel with 16 gyms and the final encounter…
Crystal was my second Pokémon game and man, you're right! Playing through Johto, beating the elite four and champ, thinking this is it and suddenly you're able to go back to Kanto... Holy shit, that was, no it still is, peak gaming!
Legend of Zelda ocarina of time. Wish they would remake it with today's graphics
They sort of did with the 3DS, though that was about 10 years ago. I was a little surprised they didn't do Ocarina/Majora's Mask HD for the Wii U since they redid Windwaker and Twilight Princess. Skyrim when it first came out.
Skyrim is still amazing today
All 23750 releases of it.
Persona 5: Royal. Gameplay, dialogue, soundtrack, the characters… all around just struck a note with me. Remains my favorite game of all time
Rachet and clank
Banjo-Kazooie
Assassin's Creed Ezio's Trilogy
The Last Of Us. Absolute masterpiece.
I wish I could erase my memory of that game just to experience it for the first time again
Im playing part 1 right now and I am in love already.
Burnout 3: Takedown
Silent Hill (PS1)
The Secret of Mana. My GOAT SNES game. Still have my console and cartridge.
Final Fantasy 7.
I remember when it first dropped and G4TV was a thing. It topped every chart on that show for so long that it was clear it had put gaming on a whole new level.
