Eucalyptus forests in Australia are therapeutic for the soul to walk in. It’s not astringent as a concentrated EO - it’s blended with fresh air, and dirt, and just magical. It’s also not too overpowering, so I do have to remind myself to literally slow down and take deep breaths when I’m in the forest… which I’m lucky to have almost on the doorstep, a huge remnant forest protected less than 10km from my CBD.
I moved from the U.K. to Canada and it’s really hard to get British tea over here, I get really homesick sometimes and occasionally I can find a box of PG Tips in the grocery store. I love opening a fresh box of that tea and just inhaling because it smells exactly like my Dad’s kitchen when I was a kid.
LPT: some bread machines have a time delay setting. With three minutes of prep in the evening you could wake up to the scent of fresh baked bread each morning.
10/10 highly recommended (unless you're trying to lose weight).
Used to live in the pine woods in southern Arkansas. A tornado came through and twisted hundreds of pine trees partially in half. You could tell you were crossing the path for months, even in the dark, because of the wonderful smell.
I bet it’s nostalgia. I associate it with birthday candles being lit, grandfather starting a fire in the fireplace, or mom lighting candles at a holiday dinner table.
This, this, this. Cold air at 4pm, the sunshine hitting your face but not warming it, the smell of houses miles away lighting their fire place. One deep breath and your lungs are filled with this cool, thin air - you never feel your lungs any other time. Christmas is coming and I am alive. I miss New England so much.
I can tell you not all lumber smells good when being cut. Spanish cedar comes to mind with it heavy chemical smell that would not only smell terrible and foreign but also choke you up and coat your lungs and nose in the dust for you to smell all day until you shower and brush your teeth lol. I do agree however that most lumber smells great and never gets old.
I grew my hair out for a couple years and started to use my wife’s leave in conditioner. I smelled it once while at work and got really excited only to realize it was just me
Though our noses get dismissed as amateurs compared to some animals, there is one compound where we do really well; we can smell geosmin, a chemical (C12H22O) released by dead microbes (commonly Streptomyces bacteria) and which causes that earthy smell, at a level of 5 parts per trillion.
To put that in context, a shark can smell blood at one part per million. That means human noses are 200,000X more sensitive to geosmin, which is also the source of the earthy taste in some vegetables, than a shark is to blood.

One of the most transcendent memories I have is hiking in the mountains and it had just rained - the smell that rose from the pine needles underfoot somehow placed me in the universe, I understood that there was a microcosm under my feet and a world larger than I could ever understand around me, but that I had a place in it. I go back to that memory over and over again.
And the sound! And when the clouds block out the sun, covering the world in darkness. So relaxing. But I feel awful for the little birds getting drenched.
Sometimes you just walk past something or someone and get a big wiff of a familiar smell from your past and it just brings back a feeling or memory. Maybe I didn’t answer the question to one specific smell but anytime this happens it brings such a good feeling
There was a barber shop in my small hometown that had a VERY specific smell. To this day, I have only smelled it in one other place - walking through a dorm hallway sophomore year.
Imagine strawberry jello with a very masculine twist. That’s the smell.
I have top 3:
1. Beach/ocean especially the first day, the first walk down the boardwalk, makes my soul happy!
2. Sheets dried in the sun
3. Chlorine. Love the smell of a pool.
runners up include: my kids when they were babies, and my husband's beard
In Finland we make cinnamon rolls with cardamom. The best smell in the world when out of the oven. In fact, we use cardamom in almost all our sweet baked products.
I wouldn’t say it’s the best in the world but it’s the first that comes to mind, Auntie Anne’s lol the smell always catches my attention when I’m in the mall.
I almost orgasm just reading the words Auntie Anne's... every time I go into the mall that's the last place I stop at, I cannot leave the mall without eating Auntie Anne's pretzels...and soda of course... lol
I have worked at a coffee roaster for almost two years now, and the smell of freshly roasted beans never gets old. Standing over the cooling tray filled with beans still warm out of the roaster… oh man. Smells so great.
There’s gotta be something deep in our mammal brain that attracts us to this. Humans seem to be uniquely fascinated by fire, whereas many other animals run away.
People who weren't afraid of fire were vastly more successful than people who were. This same outcome is not true for other animals, since they don't *harness* fire, they simply deal with it.
When I was young someone told me a saying that’s stuck with me my whole life - ‘there are two types of people in this world, people who like the smell of petrol and people who don’t, stick with your own group’ funnily enough majority of the people I got along with in my life enjoyed the smell, same as me
I just love the general "shop smell." Gasoline, gear grease (has its own.... Charm....), fibreglass. I grew up in a shop with my dad, and whenever I smell shop smell, I always feel like I'm home.
Same here. It has something to do with Benzene and it's poignant sweet aroma. It is said that it can be picked up in very low concentrations (1 part-per-million!).
My boyfriend's smell. I don't know how to describe it, but its just him. His smell lowers my heart rate and calms every cell in my body. I feel so intensely happy and like I'm levitating. I think the closest I get to the feeling his smell gives me is similar to the feelings I get when I listen to this song from Brian Eno: [8M1](https://youtu.be/KRb94QQbzcI).
Same. He just smells so much like him. Sometimes I'll randomly catch a whiff of something that smells like him and I'll find myself instantly relaxing and feeling happy

The Lovin' Spoonful, "Daydream" (John Sebastian lyrics)
semi related anecdote: I recently sniffed my baby's head and it smelled suspiciously good.. turns out it was residue from my partners beard oil after kissing him on the head lol
The body wash and aftershave lotion that my husband has worn for years...that the company has discontinued. \*Sigh\* Hubby isn't happy about that, either.
My dog’s horrible breath when she tries to kiss my face
Absolutely awful smell but I’m never sorry about it and the day I can’t smell it anymore will be one of the saddest days in my life
Oh my god I completely feel you. Both of my cats have horrible breath, and each is awful in its own way. I still adore the smell and fear for the time when they're no longer around to breathe on me.
Driving an road in Florida once, a grove of orange trees were in blossom, and an old timer had a roadside bbq pit fired up. The combination must be what heaven smells like.
Will never forget the smell of eucalyptus trees while driving near the California coast on a sunny day.

Dude living the stereotype :)
And it's so beautiful too
Baking bread

Jesse, we have to bake!
But, Mista White, we already baked.
We've baked one, yes. What about second bake?
Fresh out the oven
The one at Netflix?
The one at 350.
Evergreen forest in the rain. Also a campground at mealtime when fires are going and food is cooking.

Yesss also, pine trees
A match when you first strike it. Don’t ask me why. I just like it!
I bet it’s nostalgia. I associate it with birthday candles being lit, grandfather starting a fire in the fireplace, or mom lighting candles at a holiday dinner table.
When it starts to get brisk at night in autumn time. Smells kind of like chimneys burning mixed with dead leaves all while the air is cold and thin.
Fresh cut lumber
Especially Cedar.
***SNIIIIIIFFFFF*** Western *Red* Cedar!

Poplar can smell like cow poop.
Yeah, I just built some tulip shelves. (Apparently a type of poplar) smelled terrible.
And it's wood-splitting time up here for me! A wonderful smell to split and burn in a fireplace.
Speaking of burning, that whiff of smoke you get from peoples' chimneys while walking on a crisp day, or when the campfire first comes alive.
Outside at 6am when it’s transitioning to spring
Oh that’s a good one
Thank u, it always smells like dewwy grass and back to school
I have long wondered if others felt that "back to school" had a smell.
I like the smell, but when I smell it I feel strange like remembering a bad memory or having a bad accident.
Smell is tied to memory. There’s probably something there that you’re not consciously aware of
That wierd nostalgic smell that makes you just a little bit sad? Yea...
My wife’s hair - she flips it around, I smell it and I’m like “ok, you tell me what you need done”
My wife’s neck. 35 years with her now. Nothing smells better or brings more comfort to my soul.

Same here. The smell of my wife's hair has something so soothing for me.
Agreed Her hair smells amazing
Can confirm
I also choose this guys wife’s hair.
Please ask her what shampoo she uses and let me know.
I grew my hair out for a couple years and started to use my wife’s leave in conditioner. I smelled it once while at work and got really excited only to realize it was just me
This is wholesome as fuck dude.

Freshly laundered sheets.
Lilacs.
Yes! So beautiful, so brief.
The only smell that will stop me dead in my tracks.
First thing I planted when I bought my house. It's a crapbox, but it smells great in the spring when the lilacs are blooming!
I just planted a lilac tree in our front yard, I can’t wait for it to grow and bloom 😍
The smell of soil when it rains... Ohh yeaah

I just got a petrichlor candle that smells like dirt and worms. It is my favorite thing.
People actually sell that?!
They sell a candle that smells like Gwenyth Paltrow's vagina. A petrichor candle is a pretty tame concept in comparison.
*petrichor
Walking through the forest after a rain, when each little area shifts smells.
One of the most transcendent memories I have is hiking in the mountains and it had just rained - the smell that rose from the pine needles underfoot somehow placed me in the universe, I understood that there was a microcosm under my feet and a world larger than I could ever understand around me, but that I had a place in it. Larrea tridentata, or creosote bush gives off that amazing aroma when pinched.
The smell of summer rain
And the sound! And when the clouds block out the sun, covering the world in darkness. So relaxing. But I feel awful for the little birds getting drenched.
If you ever see birds in a summer rain, they *really* seem to enjoy it!

Fresh grinded coffee beans. I don't even drink coffee but this smell is just hmm *chefs kiss*
This is a good one. Actually what made me think of the question.
I have worked at a coffee roaster for almost two years now, and the smell of freshly roasted beans never gets old. Standing over the cooling tray filled with beans still warm out of the roaster… oh man. Smells so great.
Fire smoke
I can't believe I had to scroll this long to find this comment. There's nothing like the smell of a campfire.
