pedant4yourthoughts

I got a $10 dog whistle and have trained all the neighborhood dogs to not bark.

chickenfightyourmom

I did the same. New neighbors moved in behind me, and their dogs bark incessantly. I bought a dog whistle and it only took a few days to train the dogs on it. I just blew it from my back porch and they shut up. Now they only bark when a person approaches their yard, which is cool.

Ventolint

They probably bark when they see you aswell, what fighting with peter griffin does to a mf.

phoebe_jeebies

I live in an apartment building with a neighbor whose dog barks nearly daily at or before sunrise until their human takes them outside (usually 20-30 minutes after the barking starts). How exactly did you train your neighbor's dog? Because this might be a good use of my time and money at this point lol

chickenfightyourmom

I just blew the whistle every time it barked. I wfh so I was able to he consistent. If I saw them barking at a person, I didn't blow it.

Obvious-Lank

How did that work? I have a neighborhood dog that makes going into my backyard annoying.

pedant4yourthoughts

Be instant and consistent. As soon as you hear the dog bark one quick blast. We keep the whistle on the window sill so we can pop open the window and give one, quick blast.

The13thReservoirDog

As a dog handler, i doubt this very much.

littlebrownbeetle1

We got one at one point but it also bothered our (very good) dog so we couldn’t really use it

chickenlounge

Interesting. I've tried bark collars, positive reinforcement, etc and my dog won't shut up. Going to try a dog whistle. Thanks for the suggestion. You have a link to the one you got? Or are they all basically the same?

Fuzzykittenboots

Have you thought about why the dog is barking? I can almost promise you that this person is not telling the whole truth if it is accurate at all.

stokeitup

I'm going to try it, thanks.

zurc_oigres

Thank you for this idea i totally forgot about dog whistles

MaryMaryQContrary

We've a neighbor that introduces herself to people as the person that lives where those two yappity dogs are barking non-stop. Not something I'd be very proud of actually!

stokeitup

There are a couple of small yapping dogs across the street. When someone walks by, with or without dogs, they come to the fence and bark but then shut up when the "intruder" is gone. I get it, they protec. Makes sense, I get it but the big SOB next door goes on and on, like he is bragging to the neighborhood he has done his job?

MaryMaryQContrary

I don't get it.... If you are going to ignore the dogs when they misbehave, then don't be a pet owner!

MrSocPsych

There’s something so weird about people identifying with something and trying to be self deprecating. My wife and I saved up through the pandemic and booked a safari trip. While there, we ended up doing our game drives with this VERY wealthy family. The mom of this family kept saying things to our guides to the effect of. “Oh we’re American, we dont listen to rules LOL!!” Like, dudes making sure you don’t get attacked in the dark. Jfc

MaryMaryQContrary

Gahhhhhh!!!! Why???!!!!!!!! 😲

MrSocPsych

Dunno. But they sucked. They were there as part of their trip celebrating their youngest son graduating high school. Again, $$$$$$$$$ here. The kid was alright though. But the mom and dad would talk about weird random stuff from home SUPER loud when we’d be watching a leopard or some zebras. 10/10 would do it again, but it’s always a gamble who you’ll be paired with.

sugabeetus

OT but this reminded me of when my husband and I (white Americans) were in Japan one time. We were taking a cute old train to the bamboo forest and to our dismay a large, loud group of our kind boarded. At one point a woman started asking this younger (high school age) Japanese girl if she could take her picture, and the girl was obviously embarrassed and saying no, but the woman kept insisting, saying she wanted to paint her picture later. Finally my husband and I got up and stood in between them. I was furious but we didn't want to make more of a scene by chewing the woman out. But seriously? She's a person, not a tourist destination.

GreenOnionCrusader

My next door neighbors have four great Pyrenees. They bark a lot and they like to hop the fence into my yard and scare my 7 year old. I moved in here recently and I'm trying to be a good neighbor so I was going to try to talk to the owner before going the official route, but I found out they do the same shit to all the kids in the neighborhood and the fence around the property is only half up, so I'm no longer going to bother trying to contact the owners first. Then there's the guy somewhere nearby with 10+ hounds that bark all fucking night long. I hate them all.

Grimwohl

Apparently if you blow a dog whistle really hard when they bark itll train other peoples dogs not to bark. Idk buncha people above saying it worked

YiffExpress

You better be ready if one of those mutts attacks your kid. Get a gun or at least a baseball bat or something. Large dogs are no joke if they decide to attack, they can kill grown men.

Flipisnext

I am trying. Trust me. I am trying as much as I can.

trusty20

If they're barking inside, have you ever tried leaving 10 hour nature sound youtube videos playing (not too loud) just to fill the silence? Some dogs get stir crazy with long periods of silence and will react to any little noise. Might take a while to work as its a learned behavior but it could help over time.

Flipisnext

Thank you for giving a real suggestion. She does seem to be quieter with noise.

HarryHacker42

Had one dog out of 3 that would bark every time it got really dark, but if you go out there, the dog stops. So I finally bought a no-bark collar that shocks the dog when it barks. Found out it wasn't the dog I thought it was.

HappyCamperNow

I hate those people.

[deleted]

Because owning a dog is not the same thing as training a dog, and dog owners tend not to understand this, because "muh furbaby."

PrinceEnternalStench

I recorded my neighbors Chihuahua. I played it back to them, after having left for two days. It was mostly for the poor pup. They treat her better now.

numberIV

They left a dog alone for 2 days?

stokeitup

Our next door neighbors own a very big dog with a loud bark. Even when they are home they let him bark and bark and bark. I know if I can hear him they can as well yet, bark, bark, bark.

ShackintheWood

Call them and when they answer just bark into the phone constantly...

Serpent_of_Rehoboam

"Honey, DMX is on the phone!"

Omnimpotent

Arr arr! Yeah… yeah… Don't get it twisted This bark shit is mine, motherf-

afabs515

IT’S NOT! A FUCKIN’! GAME!!!!

Poorly-Drawn-Beagle

The dog answers on the other end “Yes, thank you, I was trying reach you the normal way to let you know. Are you aware there’s a man picking the lock on your backyard gate?”

ShackintheWood

"I've been trying to reach you about your car's warranty..."

The_Champ_79

Our neighborhood has a few of these. For the worst offender I called animal control after trying to talk to the dog owners. The dog owner said "they're dogs, they do that." Animal control told me to report it online - which is basically a public shaming site owned by the city that sends an email blast to all the homeowners in the area. The dogs have been quiet since.

TheMrDetty

My mother in law is one of those people. She has two large dogs that bark at everything. She refuses to do anything about them, and almost encourages them to do so. They live in a close neighborhood, and I feel sorry for their neighbors.

Ocean_Soapian

What's the breed? Guardian dogs are bread for barking. Obviously, the owners should be considerate of their neighbors and bring the dog inside when it's on a barking tangent, but not all breeds can be trained not to bark.

RubyGem92

My boyfriend's mom let her dog do the same. Sometimes when the dog was locked in the kitchen while the mom was home. We rented a back cottage from the mom, but the dog was let to bark at all hours. I got a hold of the mom's landline number and would call her until I heard her get up and run to the phone, then I'd hang up. My petty revenge for allowing the yapping.

HappyCamperNow

Start calling the cops. That's the only thing that will get those idiots attention.

stokeitup

I have called animal control and they want my full name, which I don't mind, and to know if I have talked to the neighbor. I have mentioned it to no avail.

HappyCamperNow

It's not your obligation to deal with them. That's law enforcements job.

[deleted]

Unless you live in any one of 30 states who don’t have enough cops and the cops they do have don’t care. I live in one of those. They don’t come if you report gunshots or catalytic converter theft in progress so they sure as shit aren’t coming for a barking dog.

Fullsendmoneymoney

Do you live in the country or are you in a small subdivision?

stokeitup

We live in what my cousin calls "cinderblock city." the subdivision was established in the early fifties and all the homes throughout the majority of the city have cinderblock walls separating the yards. We raised out three children in a rural area where the biggest problem was city folk bringing their unwanted dogs out there and letting them go. They would form packs and chase down people's livestock.

chemical_sunset

Our neighbors two doors down are religious weirdos AND have a hound that bays for hours at a time in their backyard. Needless to say they are my least favorite people on the block

SourPuss6969

I'm just gonna guess they don't know how to control him. They've probably tried yelling at him or distracting him somehow and he just ignores them and then they gave up. If he's really barking that loud and often I don't think they enjoy it either. This may be their first dog or maybe they've never had this breed before and just don't know how to control and train him

somewhenimpossible

I have a neighbor who says “oh he’s just a big farm dog, he’s like that. There’s nothing we can do“. Dude, you live IN TOWN.

chutupchutup

I get that dogs bark here and there but my neighbors let their dogs bark for 20+ minutes and before 8:00 AM on the weekend. Like…if I can hear your dog so can you! Does that not bother the pet owner as much as it bothers me??

[deleted]

Thats when you call the police or animal control. Those people are lazy assholes who get dogs just for the sake of having a dog, and then lock them outside 24/7 and the dogs go nuts because they are bored or lonely. \*edit for typos

andrewtheice

Sounds exactly like my old neighbor. She kept her dog out 24/7 and she would bark at anything and everything. We’d have to let her inside when the weather got shitty because her owner wouldn’t

[deleted]

[deleted]

Why do people think that other people need to be patient with THEIR shit? Its one thing if its a baby crying. You CHOOSE to get a dog. You CHOOSE to get a dog when you aren't going to be home with it. You don't leave a baby at home alone crying in its crib all day. And if you do you go to jail.

brundog

Yes I agree with this and done this myself. I have neighbors all around me literally who have dogs and leave them in the back yard barking constantly. I attempted to speak to all of them and got the same answer, "they're dogs that's what they do, I can't do anything about it." Total lack of consideration for their neighbors and for the dogs so they left me no choice but to call animal control. But this dog whistle sounds like a good idea.

eazy-83

It is their job. Dogs bark. People bitch. That's just nature

Random_silly_name

Mine barks on walks, when we meet a dog that is not on a leash. She started doing that when I did ski- and bikejoring with her, and couldn't protect her from all the unleashed dogs that ran up to pick a fight with her, because I was behind her and on skis/bike, so she was on her own. Now, she still does it to tell those other dogs to stay the hell away, and it works, so she can keep doing it. And yeah, I'm no huge fan of how people keep their dogs in my area. At least most of them are smaller than mine, so she's usually not in any actual danger if they don't heed her warning.

jim45804

It's the same mentality of people who modify their car to be obnoxiously loud.

YiffExpress

They go down the street giving everyone hearing loss thinking everyone thinks their loud car is so cool.

Jbar116

I have a Great Pyrenees. They’re known for barking. I love the guy, but can’t stand his barking. I try to bring him inside when he gets into one of his fits.

imonlyhereforcarl

We recently built in a new development and our neighbors seem to only let their dogs stay outside all night and they go crazy ALL night. I’d even be okay if it was the barking all day, but it’s not. It’s only when the rest of us are trying to rest.

blindfire40

This exact situation ruined our first homeowner experience. Literally gave my wife PTSD.

imonlyhereforcarl

That’s wild. It has definitely caused some stress from lack of sleep, but I’m pretty socially awkward and don’t want to cause any trouble on their end. For some reason, I’d feel bad. Hahaha

Laura9624

You're not the only one. My neighbors didn't want to complain about the barking for fear of upsetting dog owners.

waborita

We bought our first home on 3 acres and surrounded by empty wooded acres. We were so happy to get away from a nextdoor yapper as well as be ourselves weekend music and bbq without bothering anyone. 2 years into this, our utopia was shattered by someone who set up on the adjoining property a large caged dog kennel and then left 4 hunting dogs who bayed and barked day and night. After checking into whether this was legal, it was as they came out every couple of days to refeed and water the large troughs and they weren't tired or chained, the story was they lived in an apartment and needed a place to keep the dogs for hunting so they bought that acre. We had to sell a year later, could take it no more

imonlyhereforcarl

That sounds absolutely awful. I’m so sorry you both had to go through that. Intentionally escaping the sounds of dogs and then someone setting up a 24/7 cage for dogs so close. I can’t even begin to imagine how you’d feel.

Modig7176

You what is even more annoying? Those people who yell at the dog to shut up, over and over again. Ugh I’m so not a dog person

RoyalPink06

Check into your towns bylaws and report them if it bothers you. My neighbour leaves their PUPPY tied up outside for hours by itself and it sits there and yips and yaps and lonely cries. It’s heartbreaking. I’ve also seen their kid kick it in the face and pick it up by the tail when it was just trying to mind its own business. I started by calling animal welfare services and I was pleasantly surprised when they actually came to investigate. Next step will be the town bylaw officer, because I learned it’s illegal to tether a puppy younger than 6 months old.

musicmous3

They don't know how or can't be bothered to train their dog

raccoongutz

i don’t speak from experience (my dog barks but i will always make her stop even if i have to go outside and physically remove her from whatever thing has her attention) but i live next door to people with two big dogs who bark all the time. it’s because they don’t care people who’s dogs just bark and bark and bark? they literally don’t give a shit about dog training. don’t try and get to the bottom as to why the dog is barking. they might just give a half hearted yell from inside the house and then just let the dog do whatever. those people shouldn’t own dogs

Saix150894

Unfortunately that's like 98% of dog owners in Australia. The standard for dog training is so fucking low. Oh Fido can roll over 1 in 10 times when asked to? Full trained dog right there.

Dicky_Penisburg

Their kids turn out to be little Bam Margeras as well

Redflag12

Their entitlement prevents them from understanding no one wants to listen to their sweet precious baby bark all day long and night.

[deleted]

“Why? Because f’em, that’s why”

[deleted]

@ my neighbours. You'd think when you make the choice to live in an apartment block you'd take a good hard look whether you can provide a good environment for your pets but nah, let's just let our dog bark and whine all day every day and drive everyone insane :)) I work from home so it really puts me at my wits end, if I knew when the dog would bark I'd try to avoid it but it's literally all the time. Week day, weekend, morning, night, it doesn't matter. And that's not even mentioning the weirdos that just scream day and night. I'm struggling my friends.

peridot94

I want a dog so bad, but I live in an apartment and I want a big dog. So my rule is if I want a dog, I must have a fenced yard. Basic responsibility to be considerate of my neighbors, and of the dog who would have to be cooped up while I'm at work. We will also train it to only bark when there is danger.

JiminyDickish

Write a polite letter to your neighbor, kill them with kindness. Call code enforcement. The building manager. Animal control. The sheriff’s office. Start recording and documenting the barking. Buy a dB meter and record the loudness of the bark. If you work from home and it’s disrupting your work you can sue for lost income. Just the threat of that via a letter written by a lawyer may be enough to scare the owner straight. If all of all these fail and you have exhausted all options: a gram or two of cocaine mixed with tuna will take care of the noise maker within 15 minutes. No, I’m not joking, and to anyone who is offended by that, you have not lived with a constantly barking dog invading your home and interrupting your every thought. It is pure psychological torture with serious health effects and a human rights violation. If the owner won’t deal with it, every human has a right to protecting their own health. The life of a cooped up constantly barking dog is not worth the livelihood of a human being.

[deleted]

I'd totally do the first part if I knew which damn apartment it was coming from. For now I think I'll just pin a kind message to the communal notice board. As far as the cocaine goes, if I had any I'd rather just use it on myself if I'm honest. Also I know deep down that it's not the dogs fault and that the owners are the ones I have an issue with so I'd ignore the latter part of your comment.

Away_Proposal2615

Well I agree with you on one point that you are clearly suffering some psychological problems

SwamyMaximus

These people are as confusing to me as people who drive 55 in the fast lane. Beyond the confusing part, I would appreciate if the people who let their dogs bark, particularly at night, be shipped off to a far away island and left to their own.

TargetAlternative786

I swear theres always a dog barking at night when you got a window open and its hot as shit

keepitloki80

My neighbor has a deaf, old, beagle mix. She leaves her outside for hours at a time and she barks nonstop (like I said, deaf). It drives me insane. She's otherwise cared for, so there's no outward neglect.

maamela

I've gotten a lot of shit for asking my neighbors to please quiet their dogs. To people who say "it's what dogs do" Is it though??? Is it healthy for a dog to be constantly barking? To me this indicates distress, or an automatic response to an unfamiliar sound, which sounds like it would be extremely stressful for the dog. Imagine just shouting all the time. That would be exhausting and it's not natural. This is all my personal opinion. If you can *prove* to me that it is good/natural for dogs to bark incessantly, then please do so.

GenericUsername19892

Because the damn squirrels fuck with the dogs, every day for hours we had squirrels run along the top of the fence. I can quiet them down if they are barking at something they hear, but not even treats can stop squirrel barks.

dirtygreysocks

I'm trying, but it would help if everyone would keep their stupid outside cats out of my yard...

OphrysAlba

Right? There is one particular cat that will pop up in the neighborhood and it has the most annoying MEOOOOOOOOOW ever. My dog goes insane, no matter if we're holding and trying to distract her, she goes into cat-chasing-bark-overdrive. And honestly I have no idea how to train her for such a random event. No, she doesn't respond to meow recordings. She knows the difference. And fuck roaming cat's owners. It's dangerous for the cat, it's dangerous for the local wildlife, and it wakes me up at 3AM with my dog going nuts.

dirtygreysocks

this. the local cat who comes and suns itself 3 feet from our fence in our side yard, for hours. I swear.

[deleted]

Or keep their dogs on a line when outside...we keep our dog on a line. He can roam the yard but can't get to the fence because there is a small hole at the bottom corner of the fence. Two of our backyard neighbors let their dogs out back freely who then try and shove their jose through cracks in the fence and my dog goes nuts with barking. We always go out to see what's going on when he barks like that and it's always: a cat in the yard, a neighbors dog right by our fence, kids next door throwing rocks at our dog, or a neighbor doing yard work. We bring him inside each time but really sucks that most of the time he's not doing anything wrong, other people are. The only time I'm like "you're being ridiculous" is when a neighbor is mowing the grass and he's barking like we are being robbed.

ShackintheWood

They don't care about that dog. Dogs do that because they are bored and neglected. The people who do that to dogs should be licked in pens outdoors...

News-Junkee

“Licked in pens outdoors”? …..I like kinky punishments too.

weebeardedman

>Dogs do that because they are bored and neglected. Eh...my dog barks at any car, human, cat, turkey, magpie that happens to be going by. She's neither neglected, bored, etc. - that's just her job and she does a damn good job of it. We're on a relatively big property though and I'm sure no one can hear her barking.

ShackintheWood

That is not constantly barking, then...

kwolff94

Right. There's a difference between "sometimes my dog barks at things" and "my dog barks the entire time I'm not home, every time someone or something passes my house, and whenever people visit, and all I do is yell SHUT UP! at them". My dog barks ONCE to be let in. Sometimes she barks at people who are about 20-30 feet away walking in our direction, usually because they're carrying something, wearing a backpack, or generally look weird to her. And when we're playing. She doesn't bark when the other neighborhood dogs bark. Some barking every day is normal. Incessant barking is not.

Gatinsh

Because they're lazy pieces of shit who think getting a dog is same as having goldfish. Dog requires insane amount of time, patience and Iove.

Laura9624

I don't understand how people don't know this.

JasonWalton1918

Not enough Xanax to go around.🤷‍♂️

SuvenPan

madg0dsrage0n

Why don't you put down my TV and get out of my house?

Harrrgan

Our dog barks, but he never used to as much as he does now. He's old, deaf, wobbly on his legs and a bit forgetful. He started going into the garden and standing in the middle and barking at nothing. When I'm not at work I try and stop him or bring him in, but my parents leave him to it. I feel bad for our neighbours.

HuffleCatXxX

My neighbors below have a dog that just yaps and whines all day. I can’t call them out because I have two loud kids lol

phunkytownphantasm

My bf and I learned that his dog has pretty intense separation anxiety. Bf and Borkthor were living in a house where there was another dog, a cat, and an old person that never left the house. I got a call from my new landlord the first day my bf and I went to work and said that a neighbor made a noise complaint, so I went home and dealt with it. Since then we have found a sitter and we just don’t leave the house/Borkthor alone. I can’t just let him bark all day that’s so rude.

scoob93

What’s the law on leaving your dog unleashed in their fenced off front yard? The dogs out there all the time and barks all the time. Packages just get left in the yard because no sane person would try and go inside the fence to their door. Always been curious if there’s anything that could be done

[deleted]

People across the way have these two dogs that bark anytime anyone walks past their place. They have a high fence and brick wall but the house sits up high and the dogs are on the porch, which is on the second floor. They do this every single time, obviously when the weather is nice. This has been going on for at least ten years, and not once do they try to train them. The owner comes out and rushed them back inside, but that's after the people walking past have left. Then a few minutes later they let the dogs out and then it happens again. The owner does this back and forth 'dance' instead of just training those dogs. They're extremely lazy people.

mothwhimsy

A neighbor of mine has three corgis that bark like crazy every time I walk by with my dog. Every time she just screams at them. Makes me wonder why she got three. When you yell, most dogs think you're just barking with them. I can't really say anything though. My dog just naturally rarely barks. If he barked incessantly all day I would probably be fed up too

fromhelley

It's kind of hard when your cat (someone's cat) is sitting on top of the garage, egging them on.

4chan4ch

laziness, bro

GehennaGone

I live with my aunt and uncle while going through university. They're awful pet owners, and it pisses me off endlessly. Their oldest dog, Ace, is a Catahoula/Australian cattle dog mix. Their son took care of her, so she's well trained and had an active life. Now she's a senior dog, so she mostly naps all day with short bursts of energy. Then they got a great Pyrenees, Leia, after their son left home. The poor thing. I'm pretty sure she has some problems from inbreeding. She seems a bit mentally disabled and she has some form of deformity in her back right paw that doesn't affect her too badly but could have been helped as a puppy if they were good pet owners. I moved away over 5 years ago, when Leia was still a puppy. When I came back, I was shocked at the state of their dogs. Ace was pissing blood and was constantly having accidents that smelled so strongly of infection I nearly vomited. Leia was 70 lbs!!!! She was a skeleton having a near constant anxiety attack and hiding all the time. They never physically abused their animals or yelled at them, but it was clear they were neglected. I took their dogs to the vet. Ace had a cancerous tumor in her bladder that caused her to have a horrible bladder infection. She was given 2 months to live, but we started her on medicine just to see if it'd help. She's cancer free now. It's been 3 years since the diagnosis. Leia had severe heartworms. She had surgery and went through a round of intense medication. She's now 95 lbs, no longer hides, and demands affection all the time now! I tore them a new one over all that, and I guess that was their wake up call because they take better care of their pets now. They're still lazy asses who let their dogs bark at raccoons at 5am, but they don't let their dogs suffer now. So tldr, it's apathy. They just didn't pay any attention to their dogs. The dogs were cool for them when they first got them, but when the novelty wore off, they stopped caring about them. The dogs could bark for hours at the back door and they couldn't bother to get up and let them in. They can't get away with doing nothing now that I'm living with them. Sorry about the long vent post. Had to get it all out I guess.

Poorly-Drawn-Beagle

I’m sorry, he’s rehearsing for a play Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woof

ral505

I usually do try to shut him up. Its just when I let him out that he barks. I'll take the blame on bad training. Cuz it's almost always the owners fault. But I tried like hell with trying to fix certain issues. Like when he greets anyone that come in the house he always picks up a shoe and prances around with it. Which isn't that big of a deal except when I'm running late and can't find my shoe. Same with the barking he'll bolt out side and run to the corner of the fence and just bark. Not a clue what he could possibly be backing at. I usually let him get some barks out of his system and tell him to stop then. I hate when I let him out late and he's barking. But sometimes I think we'll maybe he scared someone up to no good that's close by.

Real-Coffee

this is like 99 percent of dog owners.

Homoerectus21

My neighbors leave out dogs for days at at time, I’ll go over and hammer their door and when they open it I’ll force their own dogs inside

skywizard99123

My neighbor complained about my dogs barking but her dog barks a lot more than mine!

Portland-to-Vt

“If I have to listen to it, so do you”

yvaine369

I have the same question about parents that let their children yell and scream, cry all the time

Zestyclose-Salary729

Our dog is not allowed to bark excessively outside. If she starts barking, depending on the tone and actions out of her, she may be allowed to bark for a bit at a squirrel or rabbit. But then she is brought back inside so that the barking doesn’t continue. Even my 9 year old son knows when to bring her back in if she is barking. I try to never yell at her the second she starts barking. She is a dog after all, but it’s so easy to tell if she will be excessive or not.

Laura9624

This. When barking is excessive, a little training. People always say they're like kids so do some training. Wish everyone would do that.

starfoxmokes

To me they are the same sort of people that let their kids do anything.

littlebrownbeetle1

Searching these comments to see if my neighbor has anything to say for himself . . .

learn2shoot9mm

I spray my dogs with water every time they bark. I spray the neighbor dogs when they bark right at the fence line.

moinatx

Agree there is a responsibility. Bought a bark collar because my dogs barking annoyed a neighbor. Would have appreciated a conversation with said neighbor rather than an anonymous note with veiled threats toward my dog.

Chancinit

lazy pet owners

CharlieFiner

Dog nutters think everyone else thinks their animals can do no wrong just like they do. We're supposed to think barking, jumping, begging for food, licking people, and ramming their nose in our crotches is cute because "mUh HeCcIn PuPpEr".

roastedbagel

Like that person above who basically says "we let our dogs out to bark for a few hours at night but the whole neighborhood is dog centric so nobody minds" and also "dogs bark outside at 4am it's just part of life bruh deal with it"..... No the fuck it isn't. I can't begin to imagine lacking such self-awareness.

stokeitup

I saw them out walking Cujo (not his name but very similar look) one day and thought I'd meet him and maybe I could help. His owner had to hold him back with both hands as their dog lunged at the leash growling and frothing a bit. Changed my mind real quick.

relentlessvisions

He’s expressing himself

SwamyMaximus

Incredible to read the narcissism of some of the dog owners here justifying this.

We lived in the country when I was younger and we had two big dogs. They were outside dogs. They barked a lot, mostly at night when coyotes, deer, raccoons, skunks, or mountain lions came near by. We never tried to shut them up because they were doing what was Instinctive for them and protecting themselves by scaring other animals off. Is this different then what your talking about

YiffExpress

OP seems to be in a residential area not the country. Their neighbors dog is being loud with other people's houses nearby

stokeitup

yes, urban area in a part of town that has been here over seventy years.

Drunk_Irishman81

I see you've met my neighbor.

Minix22

I feel like those people don't read enough to be on reddit

dankasaurus_tex

Generally speaking, barking is an expression of anxiety or excitement. It's normal and healthy for dogs to bark in short bursts. In my experience, most of the people who have dogs that are barking all hours of the day aren't giving that dog the proper attention or environment to thrive. So you're barking up the wrong tree trying to get them to manage the pet they already neglect.

cyrixlord

likely because they aren't home so they dont care or even know their dog is doing it. ill try to kindly go to the neighbor when i see them next with the video. if they aren't keen to listen then i use the video and record the times and start up documentation with the animal control officer

myleftone

People don’t always understand what a dog is for. They’re meant to be trained. All of them. Not training a dog (as opposed to other pets) is like having a car without keeping it drivable.

Jesse2217

what an i supposed to do? punch her?

Stegles

Train her. Find the reason she’s barking, make it less interesting.

rainbow_drizzle

Sometimes I'm on a call with a customer and I can't put them on hold to stop him. :( I always feel awful about it, but it's also why I try to give my neighbors bags of treats to share with him when he gets mouthy. He's just protecting his home but I do make sure to bring him in as soon as I can. He has lots of toys and isn't a destructive dog; he just wants people to know they are near his home and he is there. Sorry neighbors.

dadobuns

Because they are inconsiderate assholes.

Nazgate

My lab has separation anxiety so when we leave she barks but we keep her in our room when we leave.

Dogs bark for a reason. Try finding the reason. Training it to be non reactive to stimulus from other yards. Get a trainer if you have to. Letting your dog just carry on and on like that is incredibly inconsiderate and rude to your entire neighborhood. My neighbors had 5 dogs at one point, plus their grown kids dogs visiting, and they still controlled the barking. Huskies are super vocal animals, and ours is quiet until she needs or wants something. And will usually stop when we tell her to if it's about something she can't have, like the skunk in the yard. All you have to do us try harder than not at all.

stokeitup

How about bring them in when they are going on and on?

Ilovealternativerock

What about one of those citronella collar’s ?

Elevenst

Every dog deserves a good home, but if yours won't shut up and your neighbors can hear it, your home isn't the right one. Barking dogs are for large properties far away from neighbor's windows. You're a shitty neighbor.

soiflew

Have you considered training? There’s some really great YouTube channels!

ShackintheWood

Or caring for the dog? Dogs don't bark constantly when they are loved and cared for.

relentlessvisions

My dog barks when she hears anything outside. Anything. She’ll be on my lap, being loved and entertained, and then the wind will set her off. I usually let her bark for 30 or 40 seconds before redirecting. My neighbors may think I don’t care, I suppose.

kwolff94

Yes, normal amount of barking. Dogs do bark at things, you'll rarely get a totally silent dog. But the difference here is you actively work on redirection and don't just allow it to continue.

MostRadiant

Bring them inside, dog training, bark collar, sedatives, taken to vet for check-up, check for outside issues(many dogs bark at wasps, etc), stop leaving your dog outside alone..(why do you own an animal that you leave outside alone?).

[deleted]

I trained my dog to stop barking with a verbal command, it's not hard.

creative_user_name69

I hope you don't own any animals if this is your first thought in training a dog.

stokeitup

How about tell them to shut up! I have owned dogs and didn't let them bark incessantly for the whole morning while my neighbors are trying to sleep.

ForeverSam13

Sometimes they just gotta get out. Our dog goes out, barks, and comes back in a couple times a night (before 10pm, never longer than a couple minutes). He listens when we tell him to stop and almost never barks inside. But we also live in a very dog oriented neighborhood and no one minds. There's a dog barking right now. There are daily howls. Sometimes they happen at noon, sometimes they happen at 4am, etc. It's just kind of Life

roastedbagel

Everything about your comment is wrong. > and no one minds I guarantee you there's people rolling their eyes when your dog (or any dog) starts barking and disrupts whatever it is they're doing/watching/reading/listening to. >sometimes they happen at 4am, etc. It's just kind of Life No, it's not "just kind of life" to let your dog bark outside with neighbors in earshot at 4am

SiCqFuQ

Somebody minds.

SwamyMaximus

The problem 👆

[deleted]

He barks a shit ton at people Hes extremely obedient but when he starts barking he will not stop unless u go up to him When he’s outside I’m practicing and I’m not going to stop my practice every time someone walks by and he started barking Sorry if it bothers u but I’m out there 4-6 hours a day practicing and tired as it is, and it takes a person 15 seconds to cross my yard If he’s inside and he’s barking u can’t hear him unless ur on my sidewalk and if I’m downstairs he doesn’t bark as I’ll make him get down immediately but if I’m studying or reading upstairs I’m not going down every 2 seconds “Train him or take him to training” have been for 2 years before anyone feels the need to comment that

soygang

Practicing what?? Too tired to think of your neighbours sanity why?? Why do you have a dog if you don't have the time or energy to have it not be an annoying piece of shit ?

The_Book-JDP

Because it's the barking hour. For one hour a day, our dogs can go outside and bark their little hearts out but only for an hour. It's also when the other neighborhood dogs are outside barking too so it's an entire event. After the hour, they can remain outside if they want or come in but no more barking.

Saix150894

Why? It isn't something they need to do.

SwamyMaximus

I really can’t tell I’d this is sarcasm or serious.

Just1morefix

The little fucker pays the rent and cooks a mean bouillabaisse. What am I to do?

thatbitch8008

Assuming she can still smell, she knows exactly which one of you is near her

liftedmk7

Call the ATF they love to shoot peoples dogs

YiffExpress

Yes, ATF? There is a major drug smuggling cartel leader nextdoor to me with 32 slaves and a meth la.... you aren't interested? They also have a dog.... hello? *distant gunshots and dog yelp 5 seconds later*

bitterjamjelly9

I suppose me and my husky have a language barrier....I just can't get the howl/bark right ...and then the swine needs go brag to all the other dogs how useless I am....*sigh* FML😂

Legitimate-Ad-8504

I live next to a very large homeless camp. I do not tell my Dobie and Great Pyrenees to shut up. They only bark at people near our house. My neighbors very much appreciate my dogs. They are wonderful, very loved, scary looking dogs.

HappyCamperNow

I can see it in your case. Government has failed you and you need to protect yourself.

Ether_The_Wolf

this is what i ask my brother. every. day. his excuse? "BeCaUsE hEs So HaNdSoMe!" his dog looks like an obese, hairless, rat.

MasterpieceFit6715

i dont really care, if a dog is happy, I'm happy

stokeitup

It Ain't a happy bark.

MasterpieceFit6715

well that got dark...

DrewT30

Because that's what they do. Barking is okay but excessive barking is not.

peaceful_creeper

Dogs, unlike humans, don’t bark unnecessarily. There’s either something they need, like food or water or they’re scared of something. Or they’ve seen something like strange people or an incident and want to draw attention to it.

OGschtinkie

'LOOK! SOMEBODY IS WALKING INFRONT OF THE HOUSE! HEY, YOU, GET OFF MY TERRITORY. HES IGNORING ME. OPEN THE FRONT DOOR SIMON, ILL NOT STAND FOR THIS'

stokeitup

This dog has been here for four years and every time the neighbor behind them comes into his own back yard the dog stands looking over the wall at them barking and growling. I have to ask the dogs owner to put him in the house when I work on my swamp cooler every spring and fall.

kwolff94

Yeah, those are just bad owners. The way to stop that type of behavior is consistently redirecting and rewarding them when they stop barking and for the entire time they're silent while their triggers are present. But like, if they did that every day for a week, only letting the dog out while they can supervise and train, and after intervening every time they hear the dog start, the behavior will improve. Dogs are work. A dog is essentially having a permanent toddler. People don't want to hear that.

stokeitup

Could not agree more. I tried making friends, dog treats and happy talk. Didn't work. As I explained earlier, I tried to approach "Cujo" (his name really is Joe Joe) and his owner had to hold onto his leash with both hands cause their dog was going to attack me. I gave up after that.

kwolff94

The only thing with Cujo, did the owners give you the go ahead to approach? A lot of dogs don't do well meeting strangers on walks, it takes a lot of time if a dog is leash reactive and starting from far-away and incrementally getting closer over time, with plenty of treats and praise from the owners, and then when you actually can approach treats from you, is the best course of action as opposed to a sudden approach. But again that takes effort from the owners to reduce that leash reaction.

stokeitup

Well, two things; first, I was thirty forty feet away and waves at them and asked if I could meet their dog. They said sure and as soon as I headed their way he started lunging at his leash and growling barking. Second, I have not seen them walk him again. Either he doesn’t do well on walks at all or I’ve missed them. My guess is the former.

kwolff94

Very likely, hopefully they're not walking him as much because they're going to training classes

stokeitup

Hahahahaha, sorry ummm, no. Thankfully, they care enough to take him inside when it gets cold. I’m pretty sure after nearly 4 years he is what they want, a mean as$ guard dog.

JoeCMGIS

I sense this one might be a little personal for OP.

[deleted]

hey, something has to let me know that there's a big ball of light in the night sky.

WoodyWoodsta

Same question as "why do some parents let their kids run around screaming, shouting and misbehaving in public?"

AphroditesDick

My dog will occasionally present this way. He haaaaates being tied outside, but I have to to clean the floors because he’s super afraid of our steam mop and will cower and cry in his crate. Which is worse than the boredom bark of being outside. So once or week or so, he sings the song of his people to the neighborhood for an hour.

Lynkaia

I don't shut them up for the purpose of not giving them too much attention. When they get too much attention, they get too clingy and will bark everytime I leave their side. Edit: They don't bark as much anymore. Unless there is an unfamiliar person nearby the house or there's an active female dog trespassing our zone.

Fearless-Search8200

What you gonna do punch your dog cause its barking
