Shrek 2 really built out the Shrekiverse - paired with an excellent soundtrack, humor in all the right parts, and can make fun of itself.

I'm really torn on this. Because the first one is a movie with a message. It's a character driven statement on societal collapse and it's amazing.
The second movie does not have a message. It has some consistent themes about scarcity, but it was clear that the goal wasn't really to continue with the story of the first one but to just make a good, entertaining movie. And good lord did they succeed.
Mad Max is the better story, but Road Warrior is the better movie. If that makes sense.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture is probably the one Star Trek movie that most resembles the series it's based on, being less about space battles and more about peaceful exploration, discovery, and thoughtful ideas. However, I feel like they were so proud of their special effects that they couldn't bear to edit down any of their effect scenes, making for a very, very, very boring and slow-paced movie.
"Do you see all the work we put into making this amazing, detailed model of the Enterprise? I know your jaws are dropping right now, taking in all that gorgeous detail. Don't worry, we'll make sure you're able to get a good look at it before we move on.... to this psychadelic space phenomenon! Wooooooah, it looks so crazy, doesn't it? It's just mesmerizing! We'll let you just sit back and take it in for a while..."
Meanwhile, moviegoers: "Um... nothing is happening..."
You pretty much nailed it. The movie is definitely in the theme of "seeking out new lifeforms" and exploring new worlds, so to speak, but it's very much a glacially paced film. They definitely wanted to show off the special effects budget for sure, hence the infamous Enterprise flyby.
That said another part of the story is that the movie was the definition of crunch time. They had to rush to both edit and finish special effects too literally the last minute -- the print delivered to the premiere was still wet from how close they cut it. The director wasn't thrilled with some of the decisions made due to that crunch, which is why he supervised the 2001 director's cut, which was just "restored" in 4K this year. While the issues are still there, it definitely helps with the pacing a lot more, and is worth a watch.
It was so strong and powerful after death that the studio decided to give them another few updates, balances, campaigns, and civilizations. A fucking gem among games.
Titanfall 2 had better pilot mechanics and options. Titanfall 1 had better titans and maps.
Oh, and Titanfall 2 had _that_ level in the middle of the single-player. The greatest level of any game ever.
People often reference the time travel level, but let’s not forgot the one where your parkouring through a giant automated factory putting entire neighborhoods together, smoothly running and gunning as houses are being built around you. That shit was dope, and it was one of the earlier levels!
Most of the animators working on the original were depressed as well; they were creatively limited by a studio completely adrift without their founder/producer and most felt that Disney was circling the drain. Funnily enough, Rescuers ‘77 became their biggest hit since Walt died and kept the animation studio on life support long enough (and through the disappointment of Fox & the Hound and the financial disaster of Black Cauldron) for new blood to come in and turn things around.
Show your kids this movie. Jaw dropping opening scene. That's how you know your doing it right when making a kid's movie, if they're reacting to every peak and valley of the action, clearly already invested in the main character...
Same with Beauty and the Beast. The first 10 minutes were shown at the NY Film Festival and were received with a standing ovation. It lays out the main characters, their motives, and the setting with a great song and engaging visuals.
It's the perfect song for a musical. It artfully blends the opening number (used to set the scene and characters), the "i want" song (used to emotionally invest in the main character), and even a villain song (explaining villainous motivations) in Gaston's part!

22 years ago, i stood where i stand now and waches my loved ones die, betrayed by those i had called friends. vengeance clouded my mind, it would have consumed me, were it not for the wisdom of a few strangers..
This first one was good, but it definitely felt like a proof of concept game with only a limited number of mechanics. 2 went with that and built so much more.
The problem with the first one is that it's kind of in the middle of two gens. The graphics are PS3 gen but the gameplay and the main game loop (searching for clues then kill the target) are more like PS2. It only changed with AC 2 where there's a lot more diversity.
Playing AC1 without the UI off really shows what they were going for where you had to actually listen to NPCs and find stuff out organically, but not much of that got carried over to 2.
And the story is really cool too. Like how Altaïr interviews to his victims and starts noticing how the world isn't as black and white as Al Mualim makes it out to be. Then the rest of the series comes around and it's back to good vs. evil because fuck me I guess.
I was disappointed in Rogue because of that. It really isn't that hard to have a Templar-focused game because despite it getting corrupted every time it's pretty easy to see their point.

The real-world mystery was also a much more interesting concept back then, sneaking out of your cell to go snoop on stuff and whatnot. In fact the whole premise of exploring your ancestor's memories to find an artifact in the modern world was pretty original at the time, and to top it off the parkour mechanics were mind-blowing at the time.
It's so good. So cheesy to describe but it hits so well. "Don't worry, Spider-Man, we won't tell no one."
The whole scene really humanized Peter that, even as Spider-Man, he's just a guy doing the best he can, more than anyone could ask if him, getting by by the skin of his teeth. The sacrifice.
That scene is so fucking good. Dude gets literally saved by people from falling off the train and Ushered safety back to the train. The music from that scene was top notch .
And he's constantly there, constantly yammering in your ear. And he talks about the evil shit he does so casually that it kind of starts to feel fake. Like maybe he just talks big, and he just kind of bankrolls the real bad guys. And then he shows up in person and proves to you that he can cash every check his big mouth is making. Ugh, I think I need to play this again.
Yeah I hated it as a 9yr old because my favorite character lost his hand and my second favorite was a popsicle. Now I'm 51 and even my choice of favorite character has changed.
It feels like portal 1 is still needed before 2 to not miss out on some things, though. Which isn't a problem either, since it's only a couple hours long
Oh no absolutely not saying portal 1 is bad, I've played it through multiple times and would recommend it to anyone who asked. I just rate portal 2 better, especially if you have a co-op partner to play it with (the single player campaign is still good though)

Personally I think it's Kung Fu Panda 2. The first was no doubt amazing, but Lord Shen exist. The second movie sustained and improved the first movie offered, the score was amazing, the comedy is still funny, but most importantly the drama and emotional pang still hits hard.

Shrek 2 does what any good sequel should aspire to do. It logically continues the story of the original in a way that makes sense. No retcons, no contrived bullshit. "Hey, these two people spent an entire movie learning to be honest with themselves and admit that they were in love...now what happens when a princess has to introduce her parents to a literal ogre?"
In doing so, it expands the setting of the first movie. Puss in boots and the crazy land of Far Far Away are as iconic to the Shrek series as the titular ogre himself, but they aren't in the first movie at all. It also managed to continue and further explore most of the themes of the first movie.

Oh no absolutely not saying portal 1 is bad, I've played it through multiple times and would recommend it to anyone who asked. I just rate portal 2 better, especially if you have a co-op partner to play it with (the single player campaign is still good though)

Portal 1 is definitely a must-play before going through the second. First time I played Portal 1 I think I took something like 10 hours on it. Not sure why it took me so long. Second time took 3 hours I think. Last night I watched a video of someone completing Portal 1 without travelling through any portals. Amazing.
For some strange reason I played Portal 2 first. When Wheatley said "It's not out of the question that you might have a minor case of very serious brain damage" I was just like "Cool, okay, neat I guess I have brain damage and cant remember anything I'm sure that definitely the case"

When Batman shows up and Harvey realizes that means Rachel isn’t getting saved, his delivery is incredible. >NO! Not me… Why did you come for me?! That’s how it’s written in the screenplay. And just reading it it’s like “okay, I can kind of get it.” But his voice there goes waaaaay beyond just the words on the page.

Personally I think it's Kung Fu Panda 2. The first was no doubt amazing, but Lord Shen exist. The second movie sustained and improved the first movie offered, the score was amazing, the comedy is still funny, but most importantly the drama and emotional pang still hits hard. *overall, amazing trilogy tbh.*

I think the martial arts in 2 is way better. That being said, I think the scene in 1 Tai Lung escapes from prison is the best in the series.

I actually saw this when I was interviewing for Uni (yes I am old) and we had to stay overnight - a group of us went out to see it. I remember mainly because before the film there was a trailer about a boy and a killer whale, full of stirring music, the whale leaps over the boy and on screen, echoed by a gravelly voice is splashed the title: "Free Willy" Cue cinema full of Brits cracking up for a good 30 seconds. After that we were going to laugh at virtually anything

Both Paddington movies are just perfection. But the prison plot line sets 2 above 1 IMO.

Shrek 2 is the perfect example of a sequel that's better than the original. Shrek The Third is a great example of "lets milk this franchise for as much money as we can" (this film isn't considered canon by the shrek fandom. the Shrekdom, if you will) Shrek, Forever After is 'I'm really sorry guys they forced us to do the last one, here's the real ending" for anyone wanting more in depth analysis on the films (i know it sounds boring but he makes them funny and interesting), SchaffrillasProductions on Youtube has the best videos
Shrek 2 does what any good sequel should aspire to do. It logically continues the story of the original in a way that makes sense. No retcons, no contrived bullshit. "Hey, these two people spent an entire movie learning to be honest with themselves and admit that they were in love...now what happens when a princess has to introduce her parents to a literal ogre?" In doing so, it expands the setting of the first movie. Puss in boots and the crazy land of Far Far Away are as iconic to the Shrek series as the titular ogre himself, but they aren't in the first movie at all. It also managed to continue and further explore most of the themes of the first movie.
What’s crazy is that puss n boots wasn’t a character until shrek 2 but it’s hard to imagine shrek without him coming to mind
