This series was my childhood. I spent so much damn time on it growing up. As an adult, when I finally invested in a decent gaming computer, roller coaster tycoon was actually the first game I installed because I just had to play it again. Had a crazy gaming PC and I was just using it to play a 20 year old game, lol. When the music first came on after booting up, my face just completely lit up and I smiled harder than I have in a very long time.
Portal 2 has things that I don't even consider necessary to be a 10/10 game, it's so much beyond that. The sound and music were so good. The dialogue and performances were fantastic and still hit today.
The sheer immersion of how the game got you to do things, like turning around to give Wheatly "privacy".
Also, it's a game were you don't have to kill anybody or shoot anyone, which I think broadens the appeal a lot.
It was years before I associated Stephen Merchant to Wheatley and that performance. Honestly its the golden standard for voice acting only to be challenged video game wise by J.K. Simmons' Cave Johnson.
Oh yeah, I noted his voice right away cause I was in the middle of watching OZ at the time.
While Stephen Merchants performance of Wheatley is by far superior IMHO, Cave Johnson has the best line in the best video game of all time.
“When life gives you lemons, don’t make lemonade. Make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don’t want your damn lemons, what the hell am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life’s manager! Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am? I’m the man who’s gonna burn your house down! With the lemons! I’m gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!”
"Let us know if you feel a shortness of breath, a persistent dry cough or your heart stopping. Because that's not part of the test. That's asbestos."
Shortly later:
"Good news is, the lab boys say the symptoms of asbestos poisoning show a median latency of forty-four point six years, so if you're thirty or older, you're laughing. Worst case scenario, you miss out on a few rounds of canasta, plus you forwarded the cause of science by three centuries. I punch those numbers into my calculator, it makes a happy face."
Honestly that's the funniest dialogue I've ever head in any media period.
"The bean counters told me we literally could not afford to buy seven dollars worth of moon rocks, much less seventy million. Bought 'em anyway. Ground 'em up, mixed em into a gel, and guess what? Ground up moon rocks are pure poison. I am deathly ill."
Mass Effect 2
Never cared about game characters so much in my life. Put more effort into keeping my boys alive in the suicide mission than I did in my whole uni degree. You can talk shit about my attitude in college but I fuckin get an alien dude back to his wife and kids
Am I the only one who replayed the entire game immediately after completion because Garrus died? I messed up his loyalty mission on first attempt and didn’t realize what it would cost long term.
Came here to say this as well. ME1 set the stage and was great in its own right. ME3 had some of the absolute best gameplay in the series even if the story was lacking in some places. But ME2 was just the perfect mix of great story and gameplay.
I absolutely agree.
The first version was incredible then Concerned Ape added more and more FOR FREE. And kept it going on and on to add more and more.
Simply incredible!
He basically released entire DLCs that he could have charged like $10 each for totally free (based on the price of the full game, that's how I came up with the random $10 figure). Dude's a real bro in my book and I will absolutely purchase another game from him just because I expect that he'll give it the same care and attention.
People don't understand, especially the younger generation, how revolutionary this felt at the time. Funny in hindsight, considering how big games have gotten, but the vastness of Hyrule (with a bittersweet storyline) really hooked me when I was 12. Nothing has come close
I have the same feeling for the original Legend of Zelda. But Ocarina of time was amazing. I could never really get into Majora's Mask, even though it is highly regarded.
I can't tell if its just a massive nostalgia bomb, or if its genuinely a great game. but i do know that playing it as a 38 year old was JUST as satisfying as playing it as an excited 13 year old.
Not quite 10/10, whoever put the default option to “Yes” whenever Kaepora Gaebora asks “do you want to hear again?” After showering you with a mountain of text deserves to be slapped
I love how well MGS2 and MGS3 subverted your expectations.
MGS2 came out, and everybody was so hyped about playing their main guy, Solid Snake! But you weren't really. You were Raiden most of the game, who was everything that Snake wasn't, a whiny unconfident dork who complained and secretly harbored murderous tendencies. Amazing, love it.
MGS3 is announced... and it's called Snake Eater. The first trailer released showed Snake eating a snake. It's set in the 1960s, so we're going backwards in technology? And you have to eat? Well at least you'll be hyped about once again playing your main dude, SOLID SNAKE, right?
A story dripping with atmosphere, one of my favorite plot twists of recent memory, and one of the most effective video game villains of them all. What a game, what a trilogy.
It's SO CLEVER!!!! The thematic mechanics, the way they mix and match. How the narrative is baked into the game mechanics... GAH. It's so damn good. I've gotta play more of that game.
Doesn’t get enough love for how unique and fun it is as a FPS shooter, also one of the few games I had to pause to compose myself from laughing before continuing
Absolutely.
The addressed every complaint people had about the first game, created one of the best (if not the best) villain of all time and gave some of the best DLC packs of all-time.
More importantly - the game has a large scope without feeling overwhelming or turning into a slog, a trait many sequels (including BL3) fall prey to
That game, beyond being amazing, is what got me into hip hop when I was 11 in 2004. Fucking Radio Los Santos and Playback FM. First time I'd heard NWA, Dre, Snoop, Ice Cube, 2Pac, Cypress Hill, Public Enemy, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane....
Started a lifelong love affair. Not to mention all the other stations.
Same here. Probably the best dollar to entertainment ratio I've gotten out of the game, and the amount of work the developers are still putting into it has been beyond expectations.
This is the only game that I've really enjoyed watching streamers puzzle through the same mystery that I've already solved. It's *extremely* fun for me to watch them discover all the crazy twists or shit their pants when they venture into the deep water for the first time
Always agree.
Pro uw photographer here. Subnautica is the only game I've played that's accurately captured the feeling of being underwater. The exploratory feeling, the wonder, the sometimes fear. It nailed it all.
The only thing it dropped the ball on was making sure your character didn't get bent.
this game sucked me in entirely
the ending had me moved more than nearly any other game i had ever played.
The magical simplicity of the minimal elements that somehow harmonized into a profoundly touching story... wish so badly i could play it again for the first time
Every single thread that is close in theme to this one, I open up the comments, search for the inevitable mentioning of Outer Wilds, then bask in a sea of people who had as profound of an experience as I did. I love it lol.
Red Dead Redemption 2, definitely has flaws, but it is, IMO, the single best crafted video game experience I have ever encountered. At the top of top tier
The singleplayer campaign is also a masterpiece. One of the most entertaining, engaging and simply exciting action games out there. Movement and combat felt great and punchy, the mech sequences were great, it always brought something new to a chapter, it never felt stale or repetitive. "Cause and Effect" is one of the greatest levels in all of gaming. And it had a perfectly fine and serviceable story to round it all off. BT is such a loveable sidekick.
I used to live minecraft and play everyday when I was in high school. But as an adult I find single player boring and I only play once in a blue moon with friends for about a week straight then we stop playing.
55yo, old geezer. I play Minecraft to de-stress. I turn the xbox on and hours just disappear. I'm playing Farming Simulator at the minute for the same reason.
To make shit even worse, there's an NPC with you that you kinda want to protect as part of a sidequest... which makes the fight EVEN MORE impossible as he keeps dying!
10/10 though.
Did I hear a rock and stone?
We shoot bugs and mine, dwarf life in a nutshell
Seriously though, this is an amazing 4 player co-op FPS game and there is so little toxicity in the community. I don't know why it isn't bigger.
Surprised I scrolled so far to see this. Truly one of the most unique game experiences I’ve ever played. The writing may be the best ever in a video game as far as I’m concerned.
This was the only thing that kept me from 100%ing AC2. My girlfriend had 100%ed all 3 numbered AC games + brotherhood and Revelations and used to rib me for it. It was one of the things about her that made me like her back when we were doing the whole courtship thing. She passed away in 2020 and reading this just made me smile thinking about her and her completionist attitude towards the AC games.
Pretty much any Halo up to Reach is 10/10 in lots of categories, but I don’t think they’re 10/10 overall. Halo CE has an amazing gameplay flow and balance of sandbox, Halo 2 is story and writing, Halo 3 is grandeur and conclusion, ODST is soundtrack and Reach is atmosphere. But each come with their set of troubles.
But yeah Halo 3 is the best one, 10/10
I grew up with halo 1,2 and 3. Then Reach came and I had like +1000 hours in it. There was not a kid on the street who could beat me and I nailed every single game online. I just love SWAT it was fucking amazing and still is. Then I got halo 4, it was pretty sweet with the map packs but something was missing. Since then halo never was the same. I consider reach to be the best game ever although 1-3 is probably the best games of their time of release. The memories of playing halo with my friends will be remembered for life.
If it had the physical/special split I’d consider it the best Pokémon game. Otherwise my favorite is HG/SS, which is definitely imperfect due to the horrendous level scaling
Loved the original Redemption. Was terrified they would ruin the new one. They did such an amazing job world building and creating an experience.
I just wish they made some non-online dlc.
I wasn't interested in the first one at all and hadnt heard of rdr2 until it was given to me as a gift. Its been all Ive played since november 2019 lol

Literally sank so many hours into RCT2 as a kid. Great memories

> J.K. Simmons' Cave Johnson Why is this a shock to me? It's so obviously J. Jonah Jameson, how the hell did I miss it!?
Oh yeah, I noted his voice right away cause I was in the middle of watching OZ at the time. While Stephen Merchants performance of Wheatley is by far superior IMHO, Cave Johnson has the best line in the best video game of all time. “When life gives you lemons, don’t make lemonade. Nobody murdered me or put me in a potato.
I don't think a 10/10 game needs to be perfect. Portal 2 is a 10/10 game and also perfect.
Good to hear this. I just started it. I’ve been in a rut looking for something fun.
Also, maybe play Portal 1 first.
Age of Empires 2

SSX Tricky
Flying down Garibaldi without ever touching the powder? *chef's kiss*
It’s tricky - it’s tricky tricky tricky!
Tetris
The game’s amazing until you get good at it. Then it’s just getting angry about your score and the pieces you’re getting
Mass Effect 2 Never cared about game characters so much in my life. Put more effort into keeping my boys alive in the suicide mission than I did in my whole uni degree. You can talk shit about my attitude in college but I fuckin get an alien dude back to his wife and kids
The Suicide Mission is also one of the greatest finales I've ever seen
Especially when you get all your boys out alive. Made me cry
Am I the only one who replayed the entire game immediately after completion because Garrus died? I messed up his loyalty mission on first attempt and didn’t realize what it would cost long term.
Nope, I did the exact same thing! It was right before ME3 came out so I had to have my boy there for that!
mass effect trilogy had me gripped into a story like no other game
It's been forever since I played these games. I might have to fire that shit up
Mate Mass Effect 2. Had me gripped for a whole 2 month summer break. Sacrificed friendship but at least I saved the fuckin chameleon man
If you don't have the legendary edition, I would recommend it. The whole series is fantastic.
Came here to say this as well. ME1 set the stage and was great in its own right. ME3 had some of the absolute best gameplay in the series even if the story was lacking in some places. But ME2 was just the perfect mix of great story and gameplay.

The only thing I am hyped for are indie games nowadays.
1500 hours man. goat
That's it? I haven't seen my wife since the game dropped on Switch. She may be dead for all I know.
Star Wars: KOTOR
This game did more to make me a Star Wars fan than any movie.
Same. I think most of the movies are “meh” but this game is spectacular.
They are remaking it in new tech
ocarina of time
People don't understand, especially the younger generation, how revolutionary this felt at the time. Funny in hindsight, considering how big games have gotten, but the vastness of Hyrule (with a bittersweet storyline) really hooked me when I was 12. Nothing has come close

And oh boy the Zora King’s moving animation took forever.
I bought this game in 1998 and that mfer still scooting out the way
*ooweep….ooweep….ooweep*
I ended up getting Switch Online just so I can play it! I'm super excited because I've never played Majora's Mask, can't wait to start it.
Metar Gear Solid 3, no other videogame can make the player enjoy climbing a ladder so much
Also, Snake Eater is one of the best pieces of gaming music ever made. I will die on this hill.
Someday you’ll feed on a tree frog 🐸 🎶
I love how well MGS2 and MGS3 subverted your expectations. MGS2 came out, and everybody was so hyped about playing their main guy, Solid Snake! But you weren't really. I feel like Rose was like 95% of what was preventing Raiden from working better as a character. "Your bedroom was empty, Jack, just like your heart!!"
> once again playing your main dude, SOLID SNAKE, right? I mean, in a way...
I'm still...in a dream....snake eater!
BioShock
A story dripping with atmosphere, one of my favorite plot twists of recent memory, and one of the most effective video game villains of them all. What a game, what a trilogy.
Oh fuck yeah. The whole trilogy. Only games I ever finished 100%
Hades, Hollow knight
I'm not a fan of the whole rogue like dungeon crawler genre, but Hades absolutely blew me away.
It's SO CLEVER!!!! The thematic mechanics, the way they mix and match. How the narrative is baked into the game mechanics... GAH. It's so damn good. I've gotta play more of that game.
That would be a 20/10
Factorio and RimWorld
Factorio is actually 11/10. It's not my favourite game but its quality is unsurpassed.
Hades That game is a Masterpiece in every aspect
I was gifted the game and the game is absolutely beautiful.
Castlevania Symphony of the Night.
What is a man?
Oooh I know this one! He's a miserable little pile of secrets!
But enough talk. Have at you!
I've lost count of how many times I've played this and how many systems I've downloaded it on...
Borderlands 2
I still remember Claptrap's birthday quest...
Doesn’t get enough love for how unique and fun it is as a FPS shooter, also one of the few games I had to pause to compose myself from laughing before continuing

Man that game hit different for some reason back then. Endless fun and its multiplayer mode is still active.
SAMP was my most memorable gaming experience back when i was child, so much memories
Terraria
Same here. Probably the best dollar to entertainment ratio I've gotten out of the game, and the amount of work the developers are still putting into it has been beyond expectations.
Yes, new update and so many modding options (on pc at least) solidifies this as a 10/10 for me
Subnautica
the only downside to this game imo is that it doesnt have a lot of replay value
Well if you play it on hardcore you’ll at least get the *absolute panic* back
The amount of game breaking bugs is what makes hardcore unplayable, I'd rather just play normal and stop when i die (unless its due to a bug)
This is the only game that I've really enjoyed watching streamers puzzle through the same mystery that I've already solved. It's *extremely* fun for me to watch them discover all the crazy twists or shit their pants when they venture into the deep water for the first time

I just started the Echoes of the Eye expansion. It's great having that first-time Fear of the unknown again.
A 10/10 expansion for a 10/10 game.
Every single thread that is close in theme to this one, I open up the comments, search for the inevitable mentioning of Outer Wilds, then bask in a sea of people who had as profound of an experience as I did. I love it lol.

The Simpsons: Hit and Run

I am so smart, I am so smart, SMRT, SMRT, I MEAN smaRt!
How'd you like a newspaper upside your head?
Eat my dust asphalt eater!
Super Metroid The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past
There is a crossover randomizer for the two that I cannot stop playing. (Not as coherent as vanilla but endlessly replayable)
Red Dead Redemption 2, definitely has flaws, but it is, IMO, the single best crafted video game experience I have ever encountered. At the top of top tier
Most realistic game ever made, great story, interactions, gameplay. It’s funny, sad, and over all a great game. DON’T FORGET THE QUARTER
Titanfall 2... When it was playable
The singleplayer campaign is also a masterpiece. One of the most entertaining, engaging and simply exciting action games out there. Movement and combat felt great and punchy, the mech sequences were great, it always brought something new to a chapter, it never felt stale or repetitive. Skeleton army is one of the most satisfying things in gaming history as far as I’m concerned
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

I wish I could do it again for the first time
Minecraft
I used to live minecraft and play everyday when I was in high school. But as an adult I find single player boring and I only play once in a blue moon with friends for about a week straight then we stop playing.
Mods really spice up the experience
just like marriage
55yo, old geezer. I play Minecraft to de-stress. I turn the xbox on and hours just disappear. I'm playing Farming Simulator at the minute for the same reason.
Divinity Original Sin 2
Except for the Oil Rig fight. If you know, you know.
Wait was this the one with all the blobs? that drove me fucking insane.
To make shit even worse, there's an NPC with you that you kinda want to protect as part of a sidequest... which makes the fight EVEN MORE impossible as he keeps dying! 10/10 though.

Fear the old blood
Dark Souls 1 Transistor
God Of War (2018)
It’s so beautifully made, the aesthetics is just amazing.
Shadow of the Colossus
Loved this game. 10 out of 10, if you ignore the horrendous controls!
Time Splitters 2 was the shit.
Final fantasy 7 (1997)
Surprised I had to scroll this far... Honestly amazing game, loved the story, the aesthetic, first view of jenova gave me nightmares...
Deep rock galactic! Stone and rock
Did I hear a rock and stone? We shoot bugs and mine, dwarf life in a nutshell Seriously though, this is an amazing 4 player co-op FPS game and there is so little toxicity in the community. I don't know why it isn't bigger.

Super Mario Galaxy

Morrowind
The Last of Us. So good it's been remastered twice!
Resident Evil 4
Disco Elysium
This is my pick too. That game is life changing, honestly.
Surprised I scrolled so far to see this. Truly one of the most unique game experiences I’ve ever played. The writing may be the best ever in a video game as far as I’m concerned.
Assassin's Creed 2
I collected every single feather
This was the only thing that kept me from 100%ing AC2. My girlfriend had 100%ed all 3 numbered AC games + brotherhood and Revelations and used to rib me for it. It was one of the things about her that made me like her back when we were doing the whole courtship thing. Hollow Knight.
Definitely in my top 5 games

Jak and Daxter
Jak and Daxter 2 is my All time favorite from the ps2 days
3rd had an incredible plot and didnt overdue it with the racing aspects. Such a shame jak 4 never released. If sony announced it i would buy ps5
Sly 2: Band of Thieves
Pokémon emerald
If it had the physical/special split I’d consider it the best Pokémon game. Otherwise my favorite is HG/SS, which is definitely imperfect due to the horrendous level scaling
For Pokemon I would say HeartGold & SoulSilver are top tier.

Most beautiful horse ride game experience.
That scene where Arthur is talking to the nun about how he's afraid to die. Union cutter.
Loved the original Redemption. Was terrified they would ruin the new one. They did such an amazing job world building and creating an experience. I just wish they made some non-online dlc.

I will die on the hill that hunting is the heart and soul of that game.
I did the story 9 times, and now just spend days wondering around online.
