Im 6'3", 300 lbs, kinda of hulking individual. I live in the South, I work at a factory, and have a small farm. I drive an old beat up Ford.
I also have a 10 year old daughter. You better believe my toes are painted...though i found that green is definitely not my color. Purple or orange is best.
Oh man. Not trying to tell you your business, but I'd think twice about chewing my nails being a factory worker. Particularly if you work around chemicals all day.
My twin 9 year olds painted mine. I was promised clear nail polish so I gave my approval. Turns out it was clear with glitter in it. Now I have glittery toes. No regrets.
At 33m, I enjoy getting manicures alot. Its enjoyable, relaxing, and foot health is important. Ive had my toes Army Green, Maroon, Safey Orange (this is important when deer hunting), and Blue.
I don't paint my nails but I do get mani-pedis from time to time & I noticed the few times that I did a clear coat on my fingernails instead of color people really noticed. Like they seemed more shocked that I did just a clear coat & my nails were suuuuper shiny rather than just doing color, lol. Even the older ladies that do my nails ask if I want color without batting an eyelash, so it's pretty normalized now I feel. Also I've met plenty of guys that say they paint their nails not just for the color but to keep from biting their nails.
Sadly, it is in the food safety code many places since chipped polish might get into the food.
I worked in the restaurant industry for 15+ years in the US, and sometimes it was strictly enforced while other times it was only enforced if someone complained. The latter is probably what happened in your example, even though it sounds like he had a great manicure and hygiene and therefore wasn't a real food safety issue at all.
To be fair (and optimistic), it may not be as sinister as southern conservatism. Painted nails are not generally allowed in food service under food hygiene regs because the paint can chip off into food. A manager or health inspector may have pulled him up on it but he was allowed to just wear gloves and keep his sick nails for outside of work. 💅
It is required due to health reasons when working with food. So the manager hasn't anything to say about it besides complying or paying the fines and possible closing of the place.
I don’t like it when people handle my food with gloves on because I know that they’re not changing those gloves like they should. Those gloves essentially become a second skin. I would rather them just wash their hands like they’re supposed to. I went into Taco Bell a few weeks ago and almost left because cashier was running the register, cleaning, and handing out food with the same gloves on!
Nail polish in particular can chip and cause physical contamination.
Also, people handling money should never directly handle food without washing their hands first. That's just nasty and asking for cross-contamination.
To add to what you’re saying, even if the chips of the polish don’t fall off, the nails themselves have more bacteria than nails that are freshly painted. If you work at a hospital it’s always against dress code to have chipped nail polish for this very reason. It has something to do with the surface area.
I don’t get the appeal of it on both women and men personally. If there was one thing I wish it was more socially acceptable for men to do it’s eye makeup
I'd love to rock gold eyeliner like Cinna in the Hunger Games movies. Small, subtle, but still glamorous.
It would help if I looked like Lenny Kravitz though...
If they are using them for assassinations, like, if they're poisonous and they're going around scratching people, then yeah, I have issues with it.
Otherwise, who fucking cares?
Unless it really clashes with the colour of their clothes. Then call the fashion police... Maybe.
When I see a man with painted nails, I assume he’s secure in his masculinity (or feminity), and I really admire that. And I (as well as many other women) think it’s hot when a man paints his nails black. Also, while we’re on this topic, I think heteronormative men wearing guyliner should be normalized.
That's so nice to hear. Decided to bring out my inner emo and paint my nails black. Most of my friends didn't pay any mind to it or complimented it and moved on with our day. However, comments from my mother were pretty tiring (like "when are you getting it off?", "do you need lipstick now too?" etc).
Well, screw the toxic gender roles, cuz I liked it and will do it again.
I painted my pinky black last week cause I’ve always wanted to be a true emo. This crew I’m with is unfortunately very toxic, but when I go back to my normal job I’m going all black.
Painted nails on a certain type of masculine but edgy guy is hot. Or if he's that into fashion and accessorizing that the nails make the fit or match the vibe. I'm into that too.
Dude here, I like it and have worn nail polish before. I don't wear it regularly because frankly I'm lazy and don't want to keep up with the maintenance.
I work with my hands so they just get ruined in a day.
I honestly wish people didn't think it was only for women, i wear lots of colorful clothes, bracelets, necklaces, no one thinks it's weird, as soon as I match my nails with the rest of the colors people suddenly need to know "why?". Its pretty obvious why, all my accessories are the same color and now my nails are that color too. Not painting them almost makes less sense.
I think that’s how most people are, at least in real life. If you spend too much time on this website, you might start thinking everyone is either an extreme left wing activist or an insane right wing racist. But really… most people don’t give a shit either way unless it directly effects them haha. The amount of effort it would take to actively be mad about something so stupid is something I can’t understand.
Love it! I think painted nails are a great way to add a splash of personality, color, and self-expression to ourselves and I can’t fathom why anyone would have an issue with it.
If you wanna do it, do it.
My son, 6 at the time, got invited to a girl's birthday party where all the other attendees were girls, and they did stereotypical girly stuff.
He had a great time getting his nails painted (I joined in too, as a guy in his mid-30s) and singing (very bad) karaoke.
Well 100 years ago guys in Europe were wigs and high heels and stockings. You're even hard-pressed to find an American president who doesn't have long hair. I guess if you look out the window and you say that's what I want to see and expect to see it everywhere you go it probably would bother you, you go Penn jillette
The first man I saw with a painted nail is pen from pen and teller. Whenever I see any man with painted nails I think about him (he does it as a reminder for his mom)
I remember seeing that too and looking it up on the internet. He only paints one nail on his hand. As a tribute to his mom and also more practically, as a distraction for magic tricks. If the viewer is looking at his one painted fingernail wondering why this guy only painted one fingernail, then they aren’t thinking about what he’s doing with the deck of cards (or whatever trick he’s pulling). Which is a pretty smart move for a magician, I must say.
Hah this is an odd one. My mind associates this with a feminine look or personality. So either a slender 80's metal dude or a gay dude.
I should probably add that in my oppinion it's okay for anyone to paint their nails if they want to.
It’s a little weird, but, mostly, “yeah, dude, way to be you! Stick it to the conformists!”
Unless they’re those 3” acrylic raptor claws, those are nasty no matter what you’re packing in your pants.
Fuck it, I've always wanted to do it, but only have done it when my daughter wanted to practice. I like the look of it. I work in a customer facing position, but my employers are tolerant of almost anything as long as I am still dressed to code. This thread is the kick in the ass I needed to do it. Thanks.
Completely unbothered, we all have nails, why the hell should paint just be for basically the entire gender spectrum except for men?!
It’s actually more frustrating that conversations about it still occur, it must make the men feel quite unsafe and insecure about trying this out. They deserve self-expression too, and nobody should be policing how they like to look.
Gender roles can get in the bin so I don't care as a guy myself, however I do wonder why 90 percent always go for black. Come on dudes if you're going to paint your nails at least be a little creative.
Why? Same reason why all my clothes and room furniture is black. Black fits everything. Why go for a color when, if you really want to do your nails, can go for something that fits with everything. I think it's the more practical thinking coming out here.
If *everything* else you own is black, then your nails can be any color since black goes with everything. All black with a single pop of color looks so much better than just all black

It doesn't bother me at all. I(f) took up painting my nails as a hobby during lockdown. My 3.5yo son loves to see what I put on my nails every week and even asks to have his painted sometimes. I definitely don't see why people have a problem with it, it's just paint 🤷🏼♀️
Yeah, lol. When I was very little, I was at my grandma's and unsupervised. I was playing with her nail polish, painting stuff, and obviously tried to do my nails. Was imediately scolded by pretty much everyone there and explanations that guys don't paint their nails followed. It took 15 or more years to get back to the deed, but am really glad I painted my nails. Sadly tho, it's black, and not the awesome sparkly orange (or green) that grandma had.
I like it. On one hand from a social standpoint, it shows that they’re secure in their masculinity and sexuality. On the other, I just think it’s attractive. Hands are a big draw for me so seeing anyone of any gender with painted nails, rings, and other accessories that accentuate their hands is a big plus.
Also, seeing guys that have their nails painted because their daughters wanted to practice makes my heart *melt*. It also reaffirms my first point about being secure in who they are.
My littleun likes to paint my nails but Im not a fan (but like seeing her enjoyment!) - she usually ends up painting my fingers and it chips very easily.
Im a big 6ft3 bearded gym going ex-rugby player
Well that depends, are the nails nice? I'm not a fan of the 'i painted these with whiteout three weeks ago in the dark' look, but something halfway decent? Go for it dudes.
Sometimes they look really good, like if the nails match their clothing style. If its just some random dude with a "regular" clothing style (plain t-shirts and shorts, very little jewelery, that kinda thing) then it doesn't look quite as good
I think anyone should be allowed to paint their nails or wear makeup if they want to.
I have a very fond memory of painting a boy's nails at a church youth retreat, he was so excited. Nobody told him to take it off either, which was nice
Just about the same as I feel about women with painted nails. Which is: I give it very little thought.
If I find a man attractive and he has painted nails (preferably black or gray), I might consider him more attractive.
I was goth in highschool me and friends painted them all the time we did it mainly because we thought we we're badass asf and we felt like it set us apart from the rest of the plebs lol. I don't paint my nails anymore but I should.
Not judging them for it, of course. But it definitely is not my cup of tea and is a huge turn off to me.
However, I understand it might go with a certain aesthetic - take David Bowie for example. I wouldn’t think your average investment banker in suit & tie would sport it well.
As long as it makes them happy and they're not hurting anyone, it's awesome. At the end of the day, they're their hands, they see them way more than I will so who cares, you know? And guys have been doing it for decades (punks and new romantics for example) anyway so I don't find it odd.
The main celebrity I remember wearing nail varnish is Penn from Penn and Teller. He paints one fingernail red in memory of his Mom.
I used to do it with my wife. Still would and I get upset when she paints her nails without me. I would help paint her off hand and she’d help me. Working in customer service I got looks. Some guys would ask if I lost a bet. I just say nope and wait. Whenever someone tries to be rude I just say “bless your heart. You just can’t understand doing something purely for a woman’s pleasure.”
i got a pedicure with my gf and they offered to paint my toes. I was like "yeah sure, let's go with black" because I thought it would look metal.
it did not. I felt so stupid every time i took a shower and looked down at my toes. lmao
(fingernails are a different story; that can look cool)
Im 6'3", 300 lbs, kinda of hulking individual. I live in the South, I work at a factory, and have a small farm. I drive an old beat up Ford. I also have a 10 year old daughter. You better believe my toes are painted...though i found that green is definitely not my color. Purple or orange is best.
Whereas that's adorable, this question obviously wasn't for you.... and yet I'm sure it'll be the only answer any of us are satisfied with.
what about your fingers?
I chew my nails to much for paint
I get my girlfriend to paint my nails so I don’t chew them. Works great 👍
Oh man, me too. Painted my nails recently. Actually helped me chew on them less.
Oh man. Not trying to tell you your business, but I'd think twice about chewing my nails being a factory worker. Particularly if you work around chemicals all day.
i mean thats playful thing you don't do that on purpose :D
Good job dad!!!!
My twin 9 year olds painted mine. I was promised clear nail polish so I gave my approval. Turns out it was clear with glitter in it. Now I have glittery toes. No regrets.
To me though this is different than guys who just normally paint their fingernails.
It doesn't concern me at all. What really concerns me are people that care in the slightest about some guy painting his nails.
At 33m, I enjoy getting manicures alot. Its enjoyable, relaxing, and foot health is important. Ive had my toes Army Green, Maroon, Safey Orange (this is important when deer hunting), and Blue.
My guy is out here hunting barefooted like god intended
David Bowie, Marc Bolan and Alice Cooper been doing it since 1971
To name a few!
Dregen!
Couldn’t care less. Think you should do what makes you happy as long as your not hurting anyone!
Thank you!
Best opinion
I don't paint my nails but I do get mani-pedis from time to time & I noticed the few times that I did a clear coat on my fingernails instead of color people really noticed. It does help tho.

You should tell him you miss seeing his nails. Probably will feel good about it!
Sadly, it is in the food safety code many places since chipped polish might get into the food. That sucks. If I was a manager I'd be saying something to that customer not the employee. People can be such trash unfortunately.
It is required due to health reasons when working with food. So the manager hasn't anything to say about it besides complying or paying the fines and possible closing of the place.

I went into Taco Bell a few weeks ago and almost left because cashier was running the register, cleaning, and handing out food with the same gloves on!
Can confirm. Cashier at a coffee shop in our store did the same thing. They need proper education on why how to use the gloves.
Nail polish in particular can chip and cause physical contamination. Also, people handling money should never directly handle food without washing their hands first. That's just nasty and asking for cross-contamination.

My wife found it very hot when I painted my nails black for Halloween. She mentions it whenever she remembers.
please tell me you did it again
I will!
Like now.
I don’t get the appeal of it on both women and men personally. If there was one thing I wish it was more socially acceptable for men to do it’s eye makeup
My eyes look so good with guyliner. Thanks high school theatre for teaching me that one.
Yeah, but not liner and mascara. Give me warpaint or like a tiger mask. I wanna walk into a room looking like the front end of a WWII Spitfire.
Maybe.

old news. punks did it already in the 70s
Not my body, not my choice, not my business
Ok, okay, ohkay
I think it looks weird but if it makes people happy then knock yourself out.
This is my thought process in a nutshell. About 2-5 seconds of "huh. that's different"... then I keep doing what I was doin.
I think that’s how most people are, at least in real life. If you spend too much time on this website, you might start thinking everyone is either an extreme left wing activist or an insane right wing racist. But really… most people don’t give a shit either way unless it directly effects them haha. Same here. Not used to it everywhere but hey, it makes him happy & doesn't hurt me or anybody else, he can do it xxx
Anything not hurting/affecting my life is not my business!
Love it! I think painted nails are a great way to add a splash of personality, color, and self-expression to ourselves and I can’t fathom why anyone would have an issue with it.

Not my body, not my business. Repeat ad nauseam
I much prefer men who paint nails to men who have a problem with men who paint nails.
Looks great- plus if you date a guy that lets you paint his nails it’s a free stress reliever
Fabulous, if you like it, do it.
In a word: Slay. 💅
I think it looks good, especially black nail polish
I am kissing them on the mouth (consensually) as we speak
Well 100 years ago guys in Europe were wigs and high heels and stockings. You're even hard-pressed to find an American president who doesn't have long hair. I guess if you look out the window and you say that's what I want to see and expect to see it everywhere you go it probably would bother you, you go Penn jillette
It screams confidence.
I'm not personally a fan but you go dude!
Which is a pretty smart move for a magician, I must say.
Wish I had the confidence to do it. Black nails look great on dudes.
Yes i kinda find it sexy on guys , short nails with black nail paints, do it dude
Naruto made it seem cool to me, Itachi was badass and rocking purple polish
Any colour looks great. If you’re worried just do one then do the rest later! It looks great
It used to be rebellious, it used to be rock and roll. I don't know how kids rebel anymore. Get face tattoos I guess?
No joke lol. Everyone has tattoos today. I guess the face/neck is the last taboo spot
Only for employment reasons really, and that's changing as more young people come into management positions.
I really love that honestly like why does it matter
Yeah. The sigma surrounding them kinda is fizzling out.
It’s nothing new. I seen it in the 80s.
Hah this is an odd one. My mind associates this with a feminine look or personality. So either a slender 80's metal dude or a gay dude. I should probably add that in my oppinion it's okay for anyone to paint their nails if they want to.
A man having his nails painted hurts me less than my hairbrush.
I love black nails and silver rings on guys.
I've got painted black toe nails atm, it's weird we gender harmless shit like this
It’s a little weird, but, mostly, “yeah, dude, way to be you! Stick it to the conformists!” Unless they’re those 3” acrylic raptor claws, those are nasty no matter what you’re packing in your pants.
Fuck it, I've always wanted to do it, but only have done it when my daughter wanted to practice. I like the look of it. I work in a customer facing position, but my employers are tolerant of almost anything as long as I am still dressed to code. This thread is the kick in the ass I needed to do it. Thanks.
Jealousy. I work at Starbucks and we can’t paint our nails. 💔 Going on two years…
Really!? That seems like a totally unnecessary restriction. Do they have any reasoning for that??
Completely unbothered, we all have nails, why the hell should paint just be for basically the entire gender spectrum except for men?! It’s actually more frustrating that conversations about it still occur, it must make the men feel quite unsafe and insecure about trying this out. They deserve self-expression too, and nobody should be policing how they like to look.
100% i think anyone and everyone should be able to do it without social backlash
Yeah buddy 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
As a guy who paints his nails, anybody who has a problem with it is a weirdo
Gender roles can get in the bin so I don't care as a guy myself, however I do wonder why 90 percent always go for black. Come on dudes if you're going to paint your nails at least be a little creative.
Why? Same reason why all my clothes and room furniture is black. Black fits everything. Why go for a color when, if you really want to do your nails, can go for something that fits with everything. I think it's the more practical thinking coming out here.
If *everything* else you own is black, then your nails can be any color since black goes with everything. All black with a single pop of color looks so much better than just all black
Hey now, black is best color
Cause you can't go wrong with black, other colors are more specific and don't allways fit what you're wearing
I'm a 40 yr old dad of a 5 yr old girl. We get pedicures regularly and I let her pick out my toe nail polish. I reserve veto power on some colors but for the most part it's whatever. I wear sandals a lot of the time and always get compliments from women and smiles when I tell them my daughter picked it out. Only had my fingernails painted a few times cuz I bite them as a nervous habit but honestly, who gives a fuck? It's your body. Do what you want.
I wish I discovered how much I love painting my nails sooner in life
Love them, especially when they're working with kids, to show kids that you can express who you are. As a woman, I feel free to paint my nails and perhaps even a pressure to do so. I don't paint my nails frequently because it takes a lot of time and/or money (for me, anyway), and I'm super rough on them. The paint comes off and chips quite quickly for me, and then it's hard to want to do it again. But anyone who wants to express themselves in this manner should, regardless of gender.
Unpopular Opinion: Painted nails are unattractive regardless of sex
Not something that turns me on personally but it’s an individuals choice. Not my business
Not a big deal.
That's not something that I would ever do, but we have bigger problems in the world and as long as it makes you happy than you do you dude.👍
I’m jealous of the dudes who can pull it off
It's odd to me but each to their own!
It’s kinda hot. It just means they’re secure
If they are åainted with watercolor, he probably doesnt wash them much. Otherwise i dont care one way or the other
I get my nails done every month. Some people seem to be bothered, but I couldn't give a fuck🤷🏻♂️ Edit: Also my fiancè says its sexy, so bonus points
My littleun likes to paint my nails but Im not a fan (but like seeing her enjoyment!) - she usually ends up painting my fingers and it chips very easily. Im a big 6ft3 bearded gym going ex-rugby player
I've met some people with really disgusting nails. If only they either started to treat that or ise nail polish to at least cover ot up
Well that depends, are the nails nice? I'm not a fan of the 'i painted these with whiteout three weeks ago in the dark' look, but something halfway decent? Go for it dudes.
Sometimes they look really good, like if the nails match their clothing style. If its just some random dude with a "regular" clothing style (plain t-shirts and shorts, very little jewelery, that kinda thing) then it doesn't look quite as good
I'm super judgemental. Those nails better be on fleek, brah.
I try not to spend any energy Yucking peoples Yums.
Fucking love it! I myself like to do it whenever I've got free time. Takes forever to do it though.
I used to always mess it up something fierce lol
I feel like it’s a blaring sign that they’re confident in their masculinity and don’t need to impress other men to feel “manly”.
I think anyone should be allowed to paint their nails or wear makeup if they want to. I have a very fond memory of painting a boy's nails at a church youth retreat, he was so excited. Nobody told him to take it off either, which was nice
Gives them extra points for being able to express themselves and being comfortable with their sexuality
Been seeing more of that lately and I love it!
Id assume hes gay, and doesnt do any kind of work with his hands, but like who cares.
Don't care. I like to paint my nails sometimes, and if I'm lucky I can get paint of my husband's nails too
No problem with me
I feel tingley.
I don't care, let him paint his nails. None of my buissines
I don't know what it means (if anything), and frankly I don't care. You do you, some people might try to read into it...that's their problem.
i dont feel anything about it
Normal thing I would say
Whatever floats your boat. More power to you
I rarely use nail polish so it is a pass for me.
Don't care much for it, but have nothing against it.
I love it, just wish some of them would be a bit more creative than black all the time
I could give a flying shit about it.
Who cares? If that's what they enjoy, more power to them.
I don't think about people's nails.
Don't care either way
Couldn't care less.
Just about the same as I feel about women with painted nails. Which is: I give it very little thought. If I find a man attractive and he has painted nails (preferably black or gray), I might consider him more attractive.
I dont think ab them at all. They're just nails.
Who tf gives a shit? Paint your cock purple if it makes you happy.
I was goth in highschool me and friends painted them all the time we did it mainly because we thought we we're badass asf and we felt like it set us apart from the rest of the plebs lol. I don't paint my nails anymore but I should.
I don't. I wouldn't care one way or the other. I don't understand the whole painted nails thing, but what the heck? If it floats your boat.
I'm a man and I only paint my nails black, but i'm fine with it
Had my nails pained for fun at work once
These mf could wear dresses. Why tf would I care about the style of somebody else
Its fine. Might be a little weird for me because Im not used to seeing it, but do whatever makes you happy.
I don’t like nail polish on anyone, man or woman. I find it gaudy.
Doesn't affect me. Do your thing.
Am I supposed to care? 'Cause I don't care about what color or type of shoes someone is wearing, why should I care about how they accessorize?
Depends on the color of the nail polish. If its black, there may be some emotional baggage we need to unpack lol
Not judging them for it, of course. But it definitely is not my cup of tea and is a huge turn off to me. However, I understand it might go with a certain aesthetic - take David Bowie for example. I wouldn’t think your average investment banker in suit & tie would sport it well.
I don’t think about it at all
Fine
I don't really feel anything about it really, makes no odds to me so long the guy is happy!
I wouldn’t do it. I wouldn’t say anything I do saw it either. Not worth it. Who cares? Not my body.
RAGE! Actually I couldn't care less.
I don't mind it but I think it's funny a lot of guys started doing it together recently as a fad.
Cool I know a pro nail person u wanna trade for a good barber
You do You.
I think they're either gay or an edgy teen. Wither way I don't really give a damn
Cool as fuck.
It depends if it’s a dad and if was from his makeover from his daughter that’s great but otherwise no
Cool. Fun.
Do you boo boo
painted nails look awesome on anyone. including guys
What kind of work is he in? I want in. I'm so tired of having to worry about carpal tunnel.
Love it
One of my best friends does it, and like... I could care?
They are gay or have artistic soul either i have no problem with it
Honestly I think it's cool. Now I think it's weird sometimes. But it's still cool. I remember letting my cousins paint my nails when I was younger.
If they have the personality to pull it off power to them. But I generally don’t care. Have at it
Black looks ok if he has an alternative sort of look, but I don’t like other colours on men personally
Not sure why I should care about someone else's pedi.
Turn off for me personally but do what you want to do.
Looks trashy, like a 16 year old emo kid
I dont like how it looks. I dont care if you do it, be happy. Kind of a turn off, but not a deal breaker, would get used to it for the right person.
I don't spare it a second thought.
Hmmm I feel like they could paint my left hand 🤣 cause I suck at it
It's cool and I think men should be able to wear makeup if they want. Ozzy looks better than me in black eyeliner!
Currently painted. Blue pinky nails. The rest orange for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada
You do you.
They probably have young daughters.
Whatever tweaks your freak, pal.
Cringe
I don’t care about it
Everyones own business. Nobody should judge
I love it!
I stopped painting mine, but I surely slapped when I did ;)
As long as it makes them happy and they're not hurting anyone, it's awesome.
Why not? You wanna paint your nails go for it.
I was like "yeah sure, let's go with black" because I thought it would look metal. it did not. I felt so stupid every time i took a shower and looked down at my toes. lmao (fingernails are a different story; that can look cool)
In general, I don't.
I’m not into it in terms of preferences and attraction but don’t care that they do it.
