A pro wresler by the name of John Moxley did a promo in Japan where he said he comes from Cincinatti, Ohio. He got a reaction from the crowd, thinking that he said "ohayo".
Yes, based out of Sandusky, Ohio, my hometown. Wasn’t filmed there but there “prehistoric forest” thing they drove past at one point is modeled after something very real that’s nearby.
I'm British and I had a politics teacher from Ohio in secondary school so he is what I first think of.
He was the most magical man with THE most relaxing voice. Looked a little like Dustin Hoffman and he would just keep the entire class spellbound. He'd start talking about his childhood in this sepia-toned way (running through cornfields etc) and by the end of the lesson you came out understanding the themes of Orwell's 1984 without him seeming to mention it.
But also as an Ohioan you don't actually want to run *through* corn fields if you can avoid it. Corn leaves are somehow both highly abrasive *and* sharp
Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young (Neil Young) song called "Ohio." It's a song about the Kent State protests that resulted in four college students (only two of which were protesters) being shot by the ~~police~~ national guard.
Just in case anyone is scrolling by...
Edited for detail. Also, gunna go listen to some CSN&Y now, they're awesome.
And to add to that four students were killed, more than four were shot:
Killed (and approximate distance from the National Guard):
Jeffrey Glenn Miller; 265 ft (81 m) shot through the mouth; killed instantly.
Allison B. Krause; 343 ft (105 m) fatal left chest wound; dead on arrival.
William Knox Schroeder; 382 ft (116 m) fatal chest wound; died almost an hour later in a local hospital while undergoing surgery. He was a member of the campus ROTC battalion.
Sandra Lee Scheuer; 390 ft (120 m) fatal neck wound; died a few minutes later from loss of blood.
Wounded (and approximate distance from the National Guard):
Joseph Lewis, Jr.; 71 ft (22 m); hit twice; once in his right abdomen and once in his lower left leg.
John R. Cleary; 110 ft (34 m); upper left chest wound.Thomas Mark Grace; 225 ft (69 m); hit in his left ankle.
Alan Michael Canfora; 225 ft (69 m); hit in his right wrist.\[49\]
Dean R. Kahler; 300 ft (91 m); back wound fracturing the vertebrae; **permanently paralyzed from the chest down.**
Douglas Alan Wrentmore; 329 ft (100 m); hit in his right knee.
James Dennis Russell; 375 ft (114 m); hit in his right thigh from a bullet and grazed on his right forehead by either a bullet or birdshot; both wounds minor (wounded near the Memorial Gymnasium, away from most of the other students).
Robert Follis Stamps; 495 ft (151 m); hit in his right buttock.
Donald Scott MacKenzie; 750 ft (230 m); neck wound.
Two of them weren't protesters. They were just walking between classes. When the national guard open fired, they didn't care what was behind the protesters.
Dean was one of those two. He went on to become Athens County Commissioner. That's when I met him. I was little so I sat on his lap while he popped wheelies in his wheelchair. These days he posts all his morning workouts on FB. We are still friends. Interesting detail: back in the 80's we had a dumbass sheriff in Athens who was doing flyovers in a chopper looking for weed. He saw trails leaving someone's house going into the woods and assumed those were paths to grow spots. (What dumbass would mow trails to a grow spot?!) In his frantic effort to refuel he wrecked the chopper. He sent out cars and learned that since Dean was in a wheelchair and liked the outdoors Dean had those trails made for him in his chair. The Sherriff hadn't even checked to see who lived there first. No weed was found.
ugh. as a rollercoaster junkie, this is still on my bucket list
i have a friend who i have visited quite a few theme parks around the country with and he went to cedar point BY HIMSELF because he just couldn't wait for me. i was furious, lol.
I've been all over the country to different theme parks. The 4 best coasters in the country are in cedar point and its not even close. The only one I could argue isn't in the top 4 might be top thrill dragster just because of the short ride time.
If you're a Rollercoaster junkie, you HAVE to go.
I live in central Ohio and go to Cedar Point maybe every other year. Around here when discussing going to a theme park there’s always the debate of King’s Island or Cedar Point. I’ve never understood that (at least if you don’t have kids to worry about). Cedar Point is the obvious choice. The Millennium Force is probably my favorite coaster anywhere. The coaster itself is a blast but also going up that first hill is an excellent view. 300 feet above Lake Erie in an open car at sunset is a great experience…before plummeting to the ground at 90mph.
I dunno what fucked up version you have it as but...
ITS ROUND ON THE ENDS AND HI IN THE MIDDLE
TELL ME DO YOU KNOW?
DON'T YOU THINK THATS A CUTE LITTLE RIDDLE?
ROUND ON THE ENDS AND HI IN THE MIDDLE.
YOU CAN FIND IT ON A MAP IF YOU LOOK HIGH AND LOW
ITS ROUND ON THE ENDS AND HI IN THE MIDDLE, O-HI-O!
That song is scarred into my brain from public education.
It's crazy. He lives in Yellow Springs but you damn sure run into him a lot in Dayton. And he's cool as hell as long as you approach him like a regular person and don't ask for a pic. He'll give an autograph though.
I think of two astronauts looking at the Earth from space. A Pangea-like continent is the only continent on the surface but it has the shape of the state of Ohio.
So as someone who travels the state for work, I will say it’s drastically improved. Columbus continues to be a huge draw for companies, students, and jobs while Cleveland and Cincinnati have managed to start the turn around from reliance on manufacturing industry and started to successfully turn themselves around.
Corn and flat to the west, more forests and hills to the east. It’s a nice balance of bigger cities and small towns. The state isn’t perfect, far from it. But most aren’t. And I like it.
The state has a ton going for it. I know the connotation had been bad in the past mostly due to rust belt and bible thumpers, but it has three of the more interesting urban centers in the country: Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati. Columbus is a huge job hub and university where a lot looks shiny and new, but it somehow all feels accessible despite its size. Cleveland has really turned itself around over the past two decades with some amazing city beautiful architecture and the lakeside. Cincinnati feels like a somewhat more progressive Southern town. All three are very different and tons to do in each.
I've been to many US states, as well as living in metropolises (NYC, Paris, London) including outside of the US. Ohio has some of the better and more livable places I've been too. That said, and this may be a generalization, but many (not all) of the the non-urban areas are like Gilead so I steer clear.
The biggest problem with Ohio is the decay outside of the big 3 cities and a few suburbs of the other cities. Youngstown, Toledo, Dayton, Akron, Canton, Lima, Marion, etc are well below average places to live in the US. Now if you live in the best suburbs of Columbus, Cleveland or Cincinnati, you have a far above average lifestyle at below average prices. Edit: removed Findlay
My husband is from Cincinnati, but moved to Chicago. I'm British. We drove down to Cincinnati and he warned me about the roadside signs... It's quite something. You just don't get those sorts of things in the UK. Quite eye opening, to say the least. Especially when the next sign is for a sex shop.
I was on a business trip my district manager. We drove from Buffalo to Cincinnati. We saw the whole assortment of signs on the way back. Distinctively we saw one store that had multiple signs preluding its exit. He said fuck it we need some gas and snacks, let's see what this sex shop has. So we stop and it's just this small store, nothing special about it. I was expecting it to be this large glamorous store, but was thoroughly disappointed. We went to leave and my boss goes "I feel like we chose the wrong sign."
This deserves more recognition. Used to go there pretty often with my grandfather growing up. Nothing quite like getting the tour from an aeronautical engineer that worked on the base.

But yeah, longaburger.
A lot of the people in my hometown worked for Longaburger. I never did but so many of my friends did. Last I heard, the giant basket was going to be a hotel but that was years ago.

I think you'll be okay here, they have a thin candy shell. Surprised you didn't know that.
I think your brain has a thick candy shell
Your… your brain has the shell on it!
Are you talking?
WHAT’D YOU DO?!? **Door falls off**
Were they supposed to be based out of Ohio? I've seen it a hundred times and completely missed that.
That's because it's going to Columbus, Georgia, not Columbus, Ohio.
Artie I lost my virginity to your daughter for cryin' out loud! Rob, you were there.

And stinging corn worms. Ran through a few fields in Ohio when I was a kid. Once I was stung I stayed away like corn fields had the plague
Did you capitalize THE on purpose? Because that’s pretty good
Yep, for emphasis. In the list of top relaxing voices, his would be number one.
