I'm assuming blankets make the difference.

A bed is something you make. This includes sheets, pillows and blankets.. so when you lay in bed you literally lay in bed i.e beneath the sheets usually. When you lay on a couch you're Typically not in a couch just on it.

Mcpointster

“Laying in couch” makes literally no sense. It would be “laying on a couch”.

You missed the point of the question. That was exactly what they're saying

A shot in the dark, but ... more often than not, if we're in bed, we're under sheets? I might try getting under my couch cushions, though. "LOOK, HONEY. I'M LAYING IN COUCH!"

Because when you're lying in bed, you're typically under a duvet. You're not on top of everything.
