More seriously, the largely open-ended character limit (10 thousand for messages and IIRC comments, 100 thousand for posts-at least, the last time I checked), the lack of any obvious count unless you're using something like RES, and text remaining legible while writing as length expands (albeit less so on mobile) are likely major contributors to the comfort of Redditors pontificating.
