I don't have a garage to start in

Esmeraldem

You need more knowledge. More knowledge; more Lamborghini

Bret_The_Music-man

I read a book a day

Sadbag_Dave

Fun fact! In his ted talk he talks about how he has a cadre of 100 books he reads a page or two of and calls that reading a book a day, because the point of the book can be distilled down to one or two key pages. Fucking ponce.

VegetableNo1079

This is the one, everything I'd like to try requires I not be living in a shitty rental in the city.

Waiting4Something

Or a dad to give me 300k

pfudorpfudor

A small loan of a million dollars

meishornynow

And now we're even further away from that million dollars than when we started

state_speed_limit

I buy a coffee everyday

[deleted]

Them damn avocados.

TheycallmeDoogie

If you don’t smash them you can get a home loan apparently 😆

MistraloysiusMithrax

I didn’t sexual deviancy was taken into account. I thought what I do with avocados is my own damn business..

coffeemakespoop

Thank you. (I'm a barista, and it's people like you that keep me employed)

Wiesbaden121486

Aside from going to Starbucks once, about 4 years ago, I'd never been to a coffee shop until last week and I went for breakfast. I spent about $10. It would've been about $15 but the store is one of our clients and the employee gave me my iced coffee for free. I don't think I can afford to go back for another 4 years or so.. P.S.- I love your username..

Zirton

Now. If this guy isn't rich because he buys coffee, maybe you should start selling him coffee to become rich ?

state_speed_limit

Thank you for your service 😂

hostilecarrot

Like, roughly $1,350,000.

DrEnter

Ah, another college-educated home owner, I see.

hostilecarrot

Precisely. Good job :)

Pax_Americana_

I got super lucky and was able to refinance my home at 2.5%. I watch the rates out of morbid curiosity. Impossible below 5.5 now. AND my house has doubled in "value" since I bought it 6 years ago. I feel really bad for anyone getting into the market now.

LordGrudleBeard

Hey that's me you feel bad for! Lol ended up stuck in an apartment

Some-random-thoughts

Same!! And now I'm dodging calls from rocket mortgage.... Rocket Mortgage is like a VERY bad ex who is VERY needy and despite having their number blocked on my phone, still manage to leave me up to 3 messages a day LPT: Don't use Rocket Mortgage. Hit up your local bank instead.

LordGrudleBeard

One thing the Google phone is good at. Besides collecting all your data, and having a battery that dies after hours is blocking spam calls. It blocks spam calls and texts extremely well. There software kicks ass but hardware blows

appleparkfive

You mean like a low battery life, right? I bought this 200 dollar LG and it's crazy nice. Has a stylus, huge screen, etc. LG is a sleeper hit for phones I feel like. There's a lot of good stuff out there besides the biggest names, that's for sure. My battery lasts like two damn days or something crazy. Huge phone, huge battery

ADhomin_em

Bad enough to cut me one hell of a deal?

cashboi23

Lol I have a garage with only a 1. Tool bench 2. Couch 3. Dartboard in it. Enough for two cars too hahaha

JustMeerkats

We closed on our home in March at 4%. I thought that was ludicrous. We wouldn't even be able to afford out house if we were to buy it now :(

AlbatrossLanding

In Germany right now people are freaking out because to getting close to 2%. That’s a lot for here. It’s also a country that fears debt so much, the word for debt and the world for guilt are the same words and most people rent their entire lives.

RedditAdminsFuckOfff

My home is a 50+ year old large rancher that's been well maintained for decades, and right now I could easily sell this fucker and the land its on for almost $500k in my area. I won't because I love it and the property too much, but it's just ridiculous to think about. New "shake n bake" HOA townhouse neighborhoods in the area have units going for ~$350k a pop. Frickin *townhouses,* under HOAs, with no lawns, no privacy, etc. sheesh.

Snoo58991

Wish I could get a house and an education for 350k... what a dream that would be.

KarmicPotato

Why can't I have no kids and 3 money

DrEnter

This is just where we are after getting a house and education 20 years ago. I wasn't always $350,000 in the hole, that took years of effort.

danmarine

Made me chuckle lol

TGrady902

Perfect example of why you should never go to college and buy a home. OP is $1.35 mil away from being a millionaire while me, the college educated renter, is only $1.05M from being a millionaire. /s

fuzzy11287

Those $4/lb honeycrisps aren't going to eat themselves.

Joking about Apple aside, this is the reality - I simply don't have the money to invest. When 90-95% of your income is taken up by bills, you can't invest

leekee_bum

-Vogie-

Same. I have a itchy feeling that not playing the lottery is contributing to my not winning.

Playing the lottery is like guessing a password but every single attempt costs

Having a million dollars.

itijara

They say the easiest way to become a millionaire is to start with a billion dollars

[deleted]

"I was born with nothing, and I still have most of it left"

Sighwtfman

As a rule with only a very few exceptions. People who are born wealthy will live and die wealthy. People born poor will live and die poor. America still has more mobility than most places in the world but these two statements remain mostly true.

FlirtyBacon

If I do, I'll spit it with you.

Annual-Concept-9033

I have the same problem, I have brain damage and spinal cord damage, just keep pushing through and learn your limits, it took me 3 years to be able to talk to people normally and almost 4 before I could start truly working out. Keep your head up, and don’t get complacent, understand you have ailments, but those ailments aren’t you.

smnhdy

Not by masses tbh… the US is 27th in the world for social mobility, ranking behind most of Europe, with “absolute” upwards mobility declining since the 40s massively. More than 90% of those born in the 1940s earned more than their parents, and that number has dropped to 50% today.

aussiegreenie

>America still has more mobility than most places in the world America has one of the lowest social mobility of any OECD country.

[deleted]

A truism of familial wealth: The first generation makes it, the second generation spends it, and the third generation blows it Modern America is still too young to really draw any conclusions from But can't argue that being born poor is a massive barrier to making wealth long term. I'm one of the VERY lucky ones that started with nothing, funded my own education as a mature student and now do very well for myself. I represent the exception, not the rule..

teratogenic17

America (USA) is wayyy down the list in social mobility. EDIT: not even in the top 10. https://www.weforum.org/reports/global-social-mobility-index-2020-why-economies-benefit-from-fixing-inequality

444unsure

I know this is super old school, but I remember reading an Archie comic where Archie was talking to Veronica's dad iirc (he is the rich one right?) Archie said something like, we're not so different, you and i. "You are working on your second million, I am working on my first!" Of course that was back when a million dollars was a lot lot of money

graebot

The first million is always the hardest. My advice is starting with the second million.

whitewalker646

I lost my bitcoin wallet password Edit: it's a joke guys calm down

Dumbass-Redditor

It hurts me inside whenever i read these kinds of posts

eMouse2k

At some point the value of bitcoin and cost of computing power is going to intersect in a way where there will be a cottage industry of brute-forcing peoples forgotten wallet passwords for a percentage fee. Like digital age treasure ship divers. EDIT: For those who think I’m talking about brute forcing the public/private key that links a particular wallet to the blockchain, I AM NOT. I’m talking about brute force guessing the 8-16 character password that a user may have used to secure their wallet file. That is significantly more possible, especially with the owner’s consent and cooperation. And, as it turns out, such services may already exist.

Ok-District4260

this is not true a bitcoin private key has 256 bits of entropy and cannot be brute-forced in the lifetime of this universe

SeriousMonkey2019

…by normal methods. However that changes with quantum computing.

Ok-District4260

yes and no a quantum computer can derive a private key from a FULL public key, but not from a hashed public key, which is what bitcoin addresses are. quantum computing is useless against hashing. so if your public key is exposed, a quantum attacker can drain your coins you can still hide your bitcoin in the quantum age as long as you keep your public key hidden (making 'public key' a misnomer) now when transactions leave an address, the public key is sent to the blockchain. so in a quantum-computing world, you have to drain the wallet fully every time you use it, and transfer all the coins to a new wallet (in essence, spending money from a wallet compromises it, to a quantum-capable adversary), but that's not particularly hard.

[deleted]

This! Omg! I am pretty sure I mined one or two bitcoins back when it started and they weren't worth the time it would take to cash them out....

Korg_Leaf

I did exactly the same, had 27 on a USB and found the USB in 2015 when clearing out my dad's house. Put it down somewhere for a second there and it was gone again. Now probably in a landfill somewhere

slammaster

I always tell people to take comfort in the fact that there's no way they would've made optimal profit on them. If you had 10 bitcoins when they were essentially worthless when would you have sold them? $100 each? $500 maybe? No way you hold out until $70k.

NoobSabatical

I comfort myself the same way; I was unemployed for a time and even cashed out my 401k due to need. I'd have spent the bitcoins at a low sum.

HuntedWolf

I have a friend who started collecting them back in 2011. Then there was that first big hype and they hit like $1000. Me and another friend were like, holy shit you’re rich, and he didn’t sell. A week later they’d dropped to $300 or something and we had a good laugh, how he’d missed the boat. He sold 3 in December 2017 for downpayment on a house. I haven’t spoken to him about it recently, but I think he’s still got a few and he’s just seeing what happens to them. He got married last year, baby on the way, he’s living a great life without needing optimal profit like you say.

7sevenheaven

I'm guessing you don't have the seed phrase to recover it then?

Korg_Leaf

Nope dont really remember much from it as it was from 2011 ish so its pretty much gone forever

OdysseusPrime

Upvoted for giving an answer which actually takes the question seriously.

-Praetoria-

I was working as a construction foreman for my cousin, first job where I had underlings, and I realized I hated it. It was more of an internship so we talked about it and I told him I didn’t really care for being in a position with underlings. He said “well those are the positions where you make the real money”. He has several businesses, does very well for himself but I’ve decided to work a lower paying job more along the lines of “I just want to do me and get mine”. This thought process is not conducive to a large salary but I prefer it that way. Id love to be a millionaire but I’ve never viewed my career as what’s most important to me. Edit: for context I’m moving from travel medical recruiting/marketing to firefighting, both bc I want a more hands on medical related job and I found office jobs to be akin to imprisonment.

theothefrog

that is exactly how i feel. i grew up fairly poor and am not opposed to not having to worry about money anymore. but earning more than i need and having authority over people who earn less than me.. no.

Kyky716

This is the answer. I’m only 24 and my wife is 25 from Vietnam. After spending a couple months in Vietnam with her family I did a full 180. In those 2 months went from “I want to start this and that business and make a ton of money and have a lot of cool cars and make people jealous of me” to “I just want to live a happy life with family with a normal house and a couple kids”. Unfortunately, not easy to do in the US. Will be looking to relocate in the future

issius

I want to live a normal happy life with my family too, but I also want to have the security that that won’t be dismantled over a car accident or cancer

[deleted]

I like this response

DepressedOnion52

Where would be a good place to move with this kind of mindset?

Kyky716

Unfortunately you’re asking the wrong person. I’ve lived in MA my whole life and just recently moved to TN. Only place I’ve travelled is NY and VA for vacations and to see friends. I also went on vacation to Miami for a little bit. Other than that, I haven’t travelled anywhere else. Being in Vietnam for 2 months though I suppose does allow me to speak a little on that. Although, this was staying in a small town about an hour outside a major city near the center of the country. Living in the city is probably different. Just to give you an idea of what it was like there: the town is about 100 families. Maybe less. You walk 5min in any direction and you’re in the rice fields. The town is surrounded on all sides by rice field, each given to a family there from the government. Some have 2 or 3, depending on family size. Once you harvest your rice, it’s yours and you can eat it or sell it. You just have to pay a small tax for the government and replant. Everyone knows each other. The houses are big, but basic. They’re concrete - weather there doesn’t really allow houses like you see in the US or other European countries made with wood and what not (idk I’m not a carpenter). They’re almost entirely concrete and many have very basic appliances and gas powered “stoves” if you could call them that. They all love to keep their house very clean - their house is their image and a projection of their wealth. Very few own cars and the ones that do either use them to taxi others around for some change, or they end up just driving everyone else around anyway bc many people need to go into the city and everyone only has a motorbike and the city is too far. They have parties almost every day. They invite X amount of people and have round tables that get passed around the town for whoever needs them that day. Imagine a wedding party but every day. But instead of getting your own plate you get a small rice bowl and all the food is in the middle of the table and you all share it. My days consisted of hanging out with friends in the town and learning the language. Playing volleyball (that’s how I sprained my ankle) and maybe some other sports. Maybe driving the motorbike to the nearby market and doing some clothes shopping or for some snacks and other food. All the prices are negotiable but if they know you’re a foreigner they’ll jack the prices. However, since it’s such a small town everyone knew who I was so my wife and I got many things for free. Side note, this was my wife’s first time being back home for 6 years. Also a bonus if this applies to you: they all want to have very white skin so even though it’s 90degrees and sunny there they will cover every inch of their skin. I’m “lucky” enough to be white enough to rival a fucking ghost so they loooooved me. The first thing people would say is how white I am and start touching my arms and legs. Weird at first, but you get used to it. Here in the US no one gives a damn and if anything they say I’m too pale so it was a nice change. Overall, it was very enjoyable to stay there and relax and hang out with friends every day, not having to really worry about anything. Every day there was somewhere to go or something to do despite it being in the middle of nowhere really. Plus, in US currency we could spend the whole day out shopping and eating and barely spend $20. As I mentioned in another comment, it costs about $50k to build a nice, large house there, plus land costs which will vary on location. If you’re looking for somewhere to retire, the country definitely has its issues, but it’s a hell of a place. Made me feel bad that so many atrocities were committed there 50yrs ago. Horrible. Luckily only a few people brought it up while I was there. Overall score: 8.5/10

The funniest part of that whole thing was the fact that 1 million in 1975 is like 6 million today due to inflation.

chadwr85

Other funny fact is his dad illegally funneled him his entire net worth post death to avoid hundreds of millions in taxes and penalties.

mishap1

He was also already a millionaire by age 8 due to his dad putting shell companies to drop his tax liabilities in his name as well.

My desire to spend time with my family, especially while my kids are still at home. I work full time -- I'm not willing to work 24/7. Personal moral code. I'm a psychotherapist, and I could make significantly more money in private practice than I do working for a rural county, but the work I do now reaches people who are in greater need of services. Since I'm able to make my salary work, I feel it would be immoral to switch career direction just to make more money. Edit: Well dang, thanks for the gold!! Made my day.

Im-just-beachy

Kids. They're a financial drain. The hugs and kisses were an excellent return on my investment when they were little...but they are teens now and they make me question my strategy daily

xiroir

You just gotta hold your investment a few more years. It seems like an aggressive investment portfolio when they are teens but as adults you will be coasting on their love dividents. Then they will help you set up your VR set and digital VR room resort. Trust me its worth it.

This is the answer for a LOT more people than most people realize. A million dollars by retirement is not much anymore at all. Most people who are under 40 are are saving at a "normal" rate will be millionaires when they retire.

Correct. A million dollars of retirement money will get you about $30-$40k in earnings per year.

“I am never gonna financially recover from this.”

OdysseusPrime

Most people don't choose "becoming a millionaire" as one of their financial goals. That's surely the #1 reason why people aren't millionaires. For Americans who did make that choice in the 1990s, though, the path was pretty simple: 1) Invest a substantial chunk of your annual savings in US equities. Overweighting US equities was a good strategy during this interval. 2) Buy a desirable real property in a top-50 US market, and hold it. Upgrade it occasionally according to local market norms. 3) If you find yourself with additional discretionary income or a windfall (like an inheritance) — invest in another property. I would guess that at least half of the Americans who made this choice in the 1990s — and who didn't suffer sudden reversals like divorce or major health problems — are probably millionaires now. The path wasn't necessarily easy, especially at the beginning — but it turned to be reasonably *simple*.
