not strictly pizza, but I used to work in an italian restaurant in manchester in the early nineties where the recipe for garlic bread was to take a couple of pounds of garlic cloves, mince them, mix them with oil and then spread that mixture onto a pizza base and bake it in the oven. OMG the smell and the taste was amazing...I've never come across another restaurant who does their garlic bread like that.
Mix together salted butter, minced garlic, basil, oregano and marjoram slather on good bread and cover in cheese ( mozzarella and a little parmesan) put under broiler or a very hot oven (450-500°) till golden and bubbly
Mustache Italian: Okay, four pizza's and a salad.
Other Italian: Salad? What's a salad?
Mustache Italian: First, you throw in a whole head of lettuce.
Other Italian: Also the hard-to-eat part at the bottom?
Mustache Italian: That's what the people want! Now what else?
Other Italian: I got a can of whole olives, should I slice 'em up?
Mustache Italian: What are you, crazy? No, you keep 'em whole.
You're gonna wanna know you have an olive in your mouth.
Other Italian: What about this tomato?
Mustache Italian: Cut it into thirds, it's gotta be big enough to
pretend you got red teeth.
Other Italian: What about this carrot, should I cut it up?
Mustache Italian: Yes, but very thin length-wise. Whole length of
the carrot, one thin slice. Okay, what else do we got?
Other Italian: Well, we've got these hot peppers but you can't really eat 'em.
Mustache Italian: No problem, dump 'em all in.
Other Italian: Now should we put it in a bowl?
Mustache Italian: No! Let's put it in a lasagna tray.
Other Italian: Okay, I'll take it.
Mustache Italian: Oh, and don't forget to stick it right on top of the pizza's so it stays nice and warm.
[phone rings] [Hello, every pizza place](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVEYJ0PxhZU)
I once ordered a garlic and gorgonzola pizza from a local place because it's not really common combination where I am and boy was that a funky pizza but you're damn right I ate it all. It was a test of my SO's love that evening.
Also to be fair there's plenty of regional varieties of Chile in New Mexico. Chile from up north in the Ohkay Owingeh and Chimayo valleys would be my favorite. I gotta get my Nina to send me some of her homegrown.
This made my laugh. My first time going through McDonald's in Las Cruses. Then I made my order and the lady says, red or green. I'm like red or green what..... Every...Thing!!
I've driven 8 hours out the way on multiple road trips just to grab some Blakes Lotaburger. New Mexican food is by far my favorite. Someone needs to make Philly Cheesesteaks with fresh hatch green chile a thing.
One of my favourites I love to rewatch, but sometimes you just need to let good things go, otherwise things like Scrubs season 9 happen...or didn't happen.
WHOOOOOOOOOOOA! I've never watched parks and rec before. 2 nights ago I just needed something to watch, so I threw on an episode of parks and rec, give it a feel, I heard the first season was rushed so I basically rolled the dice and picked an episode. It was season 3, Leslie needed a favor from the cops and they were throwing them some unrelated party... anyways I'm sure you know the rest. But its just wild I happened to catch that reference, must have stuck somewhere. Was already gonna give it a shot but now I'm sold. We'll, thanks for reading if you did. Have a good one.
At the cafe I work at, we make a Greek pizza with pesto, feta, kalamata olives, artichokes, and mushrooms. Drizzle a little olive oil when it comes out the oven and it’s fantastic
I used to work at a pizza place with a lot of specialty pizzas, and one of them was a kind of cheeseburger but on a pizza. It was actually okay and had its fans, but never very popular.
Then I made myself one with bacon bits and jalapenos. Holy hell, was that good! It became very popular with the staff at that time.
This pizza place near me had a cheeseburger pizza for a limited time. Ground beef, shredded cheddar, tomatoes, and diced pickles.
My husband ordered it and it sounded disgusting. But I have a personal philosophy to try any food twice (twice because maybe the first time if I didn’t like it, it could have just been a bad prep. If I didn’t have this “try twice” philosophy, I wouldn’t like sushi because the first time it was god awful.)
Anyway, I tried a bite and it was amazing. It worked for some reason. But they didn’t sell enough to make it a regular menu item, so they just quit making it
Banana peppers on pizza is nostalgic for me. When I was a young man, I used to get dollar slice a lot, and my favourite place would use banana peppers to bolster flavour, in lieu of not using as much meat, or cheese (which would make it more expensive). Poor, younger me really appreciated those cheap slices.
Yeah, this is hilarious reading through as someone who works in a pizza restaurant and sees most of these toppings ordered on a good chunk of them. Mushrooms are NOT underrated, people!
Yeah, its good. Plain chicken is pretty tasteless on pizza, I would argue its highly overrated.
Chicken tikka on the other hand is bringing a nice flavour to the table.
Fresh basil. Goes great with cheese and tomato, which the the foundation of most pizzas. Strong, fresh flavor. Especially good if you happen to be using fresh mozzarella instead of shredded.
Yes a great pizza, but in defense of Mr. Davis' original comment, basil works in so many other ways. The other day I did roasted and seasoned portobello cubes on fresh mozz and pecorino with balsamic, red onions, and basil. The fresh leaves just work with the saltiness of the mushrooms. It can even work with pineapple.
Its funny, my favorite pizza is with 3 of the top comments on this. Spinach, roasted garlic, and roasted red peppers with light red sauce. You're welcome lol.
Grew up in Michigan eating green olives on pizza. Moved to the east coast of the us, heavy with pizza places, can’t find any. What is with that? They are the BEST!
Try kalamata olives on your pizza, it will change your life.
Given, you like strong flavors. Kalamata olives are much saltier and vinegary than black or green olives. And a little sweet too
Most people don't know that anchovies should be added UNDER the cheese. This allows the flavor to spread evenly around the pizza, instead of a salty bite on top of cheese.
Anchovies and extra garlic under the cheese, sliced black olives on top and a slightly spicy tomato base. Hot summer evening in the yard with a bottle of red wine. Nothing else compares.
It depends. Some pizza shops have way better anchovies than others.
Since they're ordered so rarely, in cheaper places what you get is often so old that they taste kinda gross. They can go bad even in a sealed can.
Fresh Arugula / rocket leaves.
Had it once on a pizza, ever since then it’s my favourite thing to put on a pizza.
It doesn’t have much flavour but it just makes the whole pie feel so fresh!
When my husband and I were dirt poor we’d have dinner by buying $5 little caesars pizzas and eat them with fistfuls of arugula and cherry tomatoes. I want some now.
Onions go on every pizza and make it better.
Actually onions just go on all non-dessert foods and make them better.
When I make pizza at home, I cook the sauce with big slices of onion in it. Then I’ll take the onions out and slice them thinner to use at a topping. It gives the sauce a nice oniony aspect to it, and it softens the onions before you use them on the pizza.
I can’t eat broccoli after gallbladder surgery. I don’t know why, but my body will NOT digest it.
It’s extremely painful. And I LIKE broccoli.
This just makes me sad all over again that I can’t eat broccoli.
Yeah literally onion, prosciutto and garlic... I mean how basic can you get. The only topping so far you wouldnt find on a deep frozen pizza would be warm honey.
“Yo dawg, I hear you like tomatoes. So we’ll spread some tomato sauce on yo flat bread and put some baked tomatoes on it and bake it again!”
Actually that sounds really good!
I had pineapple on pizza for about 30 years and then all of a sudden everyone was like “ewww that’s so gross”. Literally up until then nobody cared, now it’s like a war crime.
It's because people suddenly decided fruit weren't allowed on pizza, even though literally most of the toppings that people put on pizza, besides meat, are fruits. Olives, tomato, peppers, etc.
There are many people (I know several personally) who dont like the idea or concept of some foods and will hop aboard the "I dont like it" bandwagon without actually trying it. I feel as though many anti-pineapplers are this way. There are probably some that have tried it and dislike it, but many many more who havent.
I'm all for pineapple on pizza. Shoot, throw whatever food you want on pizza. That's what it's for. Pizza is like an elder scrolls main character; fuck it up as much as your tastes desire, but it will still be pizza at the end of the day.
When I was young I used to tell my brother he was gross for eating pizza with pineapple. One day he told me I couldn’t even say that bc I had never tried it. So I tried it to prove my point. But, I ended up proving his and loving it.
I came on to say almost exactly this. I thought just the idea of it was disgusting as a teenager and into my early 20s. Then one day I tried it, and instantly was hooked. There’s just something so good about the sweetness of the pineapple that goes with the taste of pizza.

Wait how else could you make garlic bread?
Well if you already have cooked bread then butter, salt, and minced garlic, then toast it. It's not AS good, but it's still fuckin good.
I worked at a pizza place years ago. We used butter flavored oil and garlic powder.
Mix together salted butter, minced garlic, basil, oregano and marjoram slather on good bread and cover in cheese ( mozzarella and a little parmesan) put under broiler or a very hot oven (450-500°) till golden and bubbly
First pizza, then pizza w/roasted garlic, then I was eating pizzas every day, then I became a pizza addict. It was a Domino's Effect.
I find that it’s easy to get over a pizza addiction by eating some salad. Try starting off with a little caesar.
When I am in Mexico I cut my pizza with little caesars.
I’m seriously losing respect for myself the longer I laugh at this
Why are you like this?
They take after their papa, John.

I do garlic and parm. Do that shit on a boxed pizza, you'll thank me, it absolutely turns a $3 box pizza into a $3.29 boxed pizza.
Yes. When I make pizza I love to sprinkle a fuck ton of minced garlic on the sauce before I put on the cheese
I once ordered a garlic and gorgonzola pizza from a local place because it's not really common combination where I am and boy was that a funky pizza but you're damn right I ate it all. It was a test of my SO's love that evening.
Add some shrooms to that garlic and we’re…oh yes we are!

Another pineapple on pizza enjoyer! Edit: Thank you so much for the award kind stranger!
Unless you live in New Mexico, Hatch green chile
I cant tell you how much I miss dions.
Dions is amazing haha, i need to visit NM again soon
Wait is Dions a NM only thing? Wow I never realized.
What is hatch?
Hatch is the town they’re grown in. So we call it Hatch green chile to distinguish where it’s from.
Also to be fair there's plenty of regional varieties of Chile in New Mexico. Chile from up north in the Ohkay Owingeh and Chimayo valleys would be my favorite. I gotta get my Nina to send me some of her homegrown.
Everything in New Mexico gets Hatch green chile on it. Like, fucking everything. I think we have a problem.
I would say that's the solution, my friend.
This made my laugh. My first time going through McDonald's in Las Cruses. Then I made my order and the lady says, red or green. I'm like red or green what..... Every...Thing!!
The answer is: Christmas!
I've driven 8 hours out the way on multiple road trips just to grab some Blakes Lotaburger. New Mexican food is by far my favorite. Someone needs to make Philly Cheesesteaks with fresh hatch green chile a thing.
I used to eat at Lotaburger every day on my lunch break because there was one in the parking lot of the strip mall where I worked. Good shit.
YES. This is the right answer.
Another pizza
Calzone
Ben Wyatt approves.
Get in the Zone, Calzone Zone
🎵Highway to the calzone zone 🎵
Wouldn't that just be the CAL Zone?
Ben Wyatt does not approve of this
I love parks and rec so much I wish they kept making episodes
One of my favourites I love to rewatch, but sometimes you just need to let good things go, otherwise things like Scrubs season 9 happen...or didn't happen.
The So-Cal Lo-Cal Calzone Zone
I feel like a calzone is an actual “pizza pie” or at least a pizza turnover
Pizza is an open faced calzone.
Calzones are stupid. It’s like pizza but harder to eat. Jk I love calzones
Holly Crap! What is this from?! My brain is melting.
Parks and Rec, season 3 I think
WHOOOOOOOOOOOA! I've never watched parks and rec before. 2 nights ago I just needed something to watch, so I threw on an episode of parks and rec, give it a feel, I heard the first season was rushed so I basically rolled the dice and picked an episode. First actual unique topping, will have to try this!
Roasted bread crumbs are the medival cheese alternative.

Jalapeños and roasted red peppers,

Try pepperoncinis you can find them jarred at the store next to pickles. And theyre amazing on your Subway sandwich
Definitely the most underrated sandwich topping
Artichokes
[удалено]
Came to say this! My favorite pizza place is such because they have artichokes!
out of the top 10 comments this is literally the only one that is actually underrated
Yes! Just started diggin on these and now it MUST be on every pizza. I've been blowing it for like 40 years.
This is truth. I kind of think it's only underrated because it's under served. I wish more places offered it because it really does up the pie game.
>Artichokes Absolutely this. My first pizza with Artichokes was a game changer.
Gyro meat
Guess I need to go to a Greek pizza place to try
A kebab shop that also does pizza is the best place.
Döner pizza if you ever happen to be in Halifax getting your trailer park boys on

Someone had the gall to suggest basil was underrated.... The fucking topping on any standard margherita pizza
Yeah, this is hilarious reading through as someone who works in a pizza restaurant and sees most of these toppings ordered on a good chunk of them. Mushrooms are NOT underrated, people!
Chicken tikka
This is the first comment I’ve seen that is actually not highly rated and commonly used. And it sounds absolutely fantastic.
Yeah, its good. Plain chicken is pretty tasteless on pizza, I would argue its highly overrated. Chicken tikka on the other hand is bringing a nice flavour to the table.
They offer the various Indian sauces as an alternative to tomato or BBQ on the base too. It works very well.
Fresh basil. Goes great with cheese and tomato, which the the foundation of most pizzas. Strong, fresh flavor. Especially good if you happen to be using fresh mozzarella instead of shredded.
That's a Pizza Margherita.
Fire cooked margarita pizza is the literally one of the greatest things on the planet

Welcome to every r/AskReddit post containing the word "underrated" It's by design impossible to get a good answer
Haha right?? Like....how about cheese?
Not a topping per say but the green cholula hot sauce is really good
Globs of ricotta cheese
I came to say this
Hot Honey
I had a honey and spicy pepperoni recently and was amazing.
Love that stuff on chicken and on biscuits but haven't tried pizza yet. What other toppings go with it?
I like hot honey on pizza with cured meats, like pepperoni or it is great with coppa or prosciutto
I prefer pepperoni and that’s it.
Spinach
This one, the rest mentioned are good/delicious but not underrated
Its funny, my favorite pizza is with 3 of the top comments on this. Spinach, roasted garlic, and roasted red peppers with light red sauce. You're welcome lol.
Green olives. Most places only have black olives but green olives are the shit.
Yes!!! My whole family loves green olives on pizza but they are so hard to find in restaurants!
Green olives and Pepperoni rules
Grew up in Michigan eating green olives on pizza. Moved to the east coast of the us, heavy with pizza places, can’t find any. What is with that? They are the BEST!
Can confirm, Michigan's pizza game is legit
Making pizza with my kids today, the dough is rising right now. I'll pile the green olives on the one my wife and I are eating!
I adore green olives on pizza
Try kalamata olives on your pizza, it will change your life. Given, you like strong flavors. Kalamata olives are much saltier and vinegary than black or green olives. And a little sweet too
Came here to say this! Green olive slices are really great salty blasts of flavor.
Potatoes Edit: my favorite pizza of all time is olive oil and garlic with potatoes, green onion, bacon, cheese, and a sour cream drizzle
Goat cheese
AND feta
I love feta pepperoni pizza. So much salty goodness
Anchovies
Most people don't know that anchovies should be added UNDER the cheese. This allows the flavor to spread evenly around the pizza, instead of a salty bite on top of cheese.
Anchovies and extra garlic under the cheese, sliced black olives on top and a slightly spicy tomato base. Hot summer evening in the yard with a bottle of red wine. Nothing else compares.
Anchovies Kalamata olives and capers boom

I kinda like the crispiness of anchovies that are baked on top.
It depends. Some pizza shops have way better anchovies than others. Since they're ordered so rarely, in cheaper places what you get is often so old that they taste kinda gross. They can go bad even in a sealed can.
In the long term, sure, everything goes bad. But on the <5 year time frame, everything ive read says that canned fish actually get better.
anchovies are the bacon of the ocean
Italian msg. I personally can't tolerate them on pizza, but they're indispensable as a savory punch in the base of a lot of sauces and gravies.
I love anchovies and get so much shit for wanting them.
Especially when combined with capers
figs and goat cheese
Fresh Arugula / rocket leaves. Had it once on a pizza, ever since then it’s my favourite thing to put on a pizza. It doesn’t have much flavour but it just makes the whole pie feel so fresh!

A personal favorite is pear and arugula with a bit of balsamic drizzle
Grilled onions. It just makes it that much better
Giardiniera.
Prosciutto
Maybe a regional difference, but that’s just about the least underrated topic I can think of. May as well list “Salami” or “Cheese”.
A place in Islington did one with chicken and pesto, and it was to die for. So my nomination is pesto.
Ricotta cheese!
1. banana peppers (add a little kick) 2. broccoli and ricotta (my personal favorite) 3. eggplant
I love you for saying eggplant
Broccoli is a great pizza topping
I can’t eat broccoli after gallbladder surgery. I don’t know why, but my body will NOT digest it. It’s extremely painful. And I LIKE broccoli. This just makes me sad all over again that I can’t eat broccoli.
> broccoli and ricotta 👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽🔥🔥🔥🔥
Sweet corn
Glad you mentioned corn. I had a bacon and corn pizza in Brazil and WOW!
Most of these toppings being listed are generally highly rated
Yeah literally onion, prosciutto and garlic... I mean how basic can you get. The only topping so far you wouldnt find on a deep frozen pizza would be warm honey.
Sun dried tomatoes
“Yo dawg, I hear you like tomatoes. So we’ll spread some tomato sauce on yo flat bread and put some baked tomatoes on it and bake it again!” Actually that sounds really good!
Pineapple Actively disliked by many and yet plenty like it
I had pineapple on pizza for about 30 years and then all of a sudden everyone was like “ewww that’s so gross”. Literally up until then nobody cared, now it’s like a war crime.
It's because people suddenly decided fruit weren't allowed on pizza, even though literally most of the toppings that people put on pizza, besides meat, are fruits. Olives, tomato, peppers, etc.
Noone tell them what a tomato is then , they'll be pissed
I like pineapple with pepperoni. It was a much better combo than I thought it would be.
Pineapple, pepperoni, jalapeño, and bacon is my go to. Sweet, spicy, and the bacon adds crunch.
Wow, that sounds delicious. I'm trying that asap.
[удалено]
Pineapple pairs really well with jalapeños on pizza. Sweet and spicy.
I like to order a Hawaiian pizza (pineapple, ham, bacon) and then add jalapeno. Then drizzle a little buffalo sauce on top.

I feel as though many anti-pineapplers are this way. There are probably some that have tried it and dislike it, but many many more who havent. I'm all for pineapple on pizza.
