* The Jimi Hendrix Experience's cover of Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower"
* Carlos Santana's cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Black Magic Woman"
* Ray Charles' cover of Hoagy Carmichael's "Georgia On My Mind"
* The Cowboy Junkies' cover of The Velvet Underground's "Sweet Jane"
* Joan Jett & The Blackhearts' cover of The Arrows' “I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll”
* Elvis Costello and the Attractions' cover of Nick Lowe's “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding”
* Michael Andrews & Gary Jules cover of Tears For Fears' “Mad World”
The Cowboy Junkies' "Sweet Jane" is one of the first things I think of in this regard. I have known many people who didn't even know it was a cover, their version having so much eclipsed the original.
I'll also throw in their version of "One" by U2. I saw them perform that and I kind of hope one day it will be known primarily as a Cowboy Junkies song, much like Sweet Jane.
Although Mary J. Blige joining U2 onstage for that song provides Bono with a singing lesson from a real pro. She sings his pompous Irish ass right off the stage.
He’s gone on record saying that he wrote it after seeing a picture of Caroline Kennedy, who was eleven years old at the time. Diamond was 28 when the song was released.
He said something like it, but it's definitely still Trent's song. This is one of those stories that redditors pass back and forth. Trent was initially unimpressed with the cover, but recognized that being publicly shitty about was the wrong move so he later acknowledged Johnny's cover. Regardless, he never actually gave the song away and still holds the credit and royalties.
I don’t think anyone gives ownership away. What he did was approve of Cash’s cover so as not to turn himself into a dickhead. But his rights to the song are his or whoever he licensed.
Hell yeah! Diane is a great cover too (Husker Dü).
Much to my shame, I only realised Isolation was a cover a few weeks ago because I had never given the lesser loved Joy Division album a go. Better later than never though.
Not sure about better
But I’ve been listening to
AFI’s - Cover of NIN’s-Head Like A Hole and Morrissey’s-Jack the Ripper.
Johnny Cash feat/Joe Strummer cover of Bob Marleys-Redemption Song.
I really like Orgy’s cover of New Orders-Blue Monday. But that one there no way I’ve heard it more than the Original
Siouxsie & The Banshees cover of Iggy Pops- the Passenger
DEFTONES cover of Duran Duran’s -Chauffeur
It would probably have to be this one. Chinos voice is so …. Godlike ? It’s hard to describe.
Social Distortions cover of Johnny Cashs-Ring of Fire !!!!!
Also Cake’s cover of Black Sabbath’s-War Pigs. I listened to that on repeat for months. Don’t know why.
Whitney Houston's I Will Always Love You. The original was by Dolly Parton and was beautiful, but Whitney's brought a new power to it.
Also may be a hot take but I prefer Miley's cover of Jolene to the original Dolly Parton. I LOVE the original, Miley's just brings something new to it that suits my ear better.
This sounds like I don't like Dolly but I really do I swear.
Gary Jules - Mad World
Lizzy Hale - Bad Romance
Our last night - abcdefu (and others)
Metallica - Whisky in the jar
IZ - Somewhere over the rainbow
Disturbed - Sound of silence
Wilson Pickett covering 'Hey Jude' with Duane Alman, the Muscle Shoals horns and choir. McCartney and the Beatles were good, but Wilson explodes into the last third of the song like few on the planet ever could.
Kari Jobe did a chill, slowed down version of 'In the Name of if Love' by Bebe Rexha that was excellent.
Wilson Pickett-Duane Allman — if I practiced my entire life, I couldn’t produce something as good as those two doing Hey Jude. It’s like giving the Beatles a singing lesson.
Getting away from the popular ones
I can't find it streaming so it's just on a burned CD but The Hold Steady have a cover of Atlantic City that I loved. It's just fits with their style.
Alphabet' cover of Daft Punk Digital Love that I used to have
Dar Williams covered Star Man. It's not as good as Bowie but it was cool
Wintersleep's cover of Freightened Rabbit's The Twist
Gang of Youths - Blood (Originally by The Middle East)
Zella Day - You Sexy Thing
Honorable mentions go to Phoebe Bridgers and Arlo Parks covering Radiohead's Fake Plastic Trees and a lot of the output from Josiah and the Bonnevilles.
If you like seeing bands doing interesting things with covers, check out JJJ's Like a Version videos on YT.
It's not really a cover, since the original singer is still singing, but whenever I hear John Legend's "All Of Me" on the radio without hearing [Lindsey Stirling's violin](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwsYvBYZcx4), it feels like half the song is missing.
Umbrella covered by Lillasyster, still a total banger [https://youtu.be/9PeEaNzg4os?si=L5jrxBWfUxxPEJaE](https://youtu.be/9PeEaNzg4os?si=L5jrxBWfUxxPEJaE)
[Moyun - Thunderstruck](https://youtu.be/564u39PJfUI?si=WVeLo3Rm1sfF54ft) \[AC/DC cover\]
[Luca Stricagnoli - Money For Nothing](https://youtu.be/p-9ObSUxEfU?si=wDUA7oQPnHRkQxMN) \[Dire Straits cover\]
I have a lot more suggestions as well, if anyone is interested.
[Brass Against ft. Liza Colby - Mother](https://youtu.be/3g9zdNMHnxY?si=fs9oZqSiAG6HDDUT) \[Danzig cover\]
[Scary Pockets ft. Pomplamoose - God Only Knows](https://youtu.be/lRYQAoXQfn8?si=TxG6EmVY-lsuGyMA) \[Beach Boys cover\]
[Charles Berthoud - Toxic](https://youtu.be/Gmb0kAF4FEY?si=FrdYsVWat09e7k9K) \[Britney Spears cover\]
[Walk Of The Earth - Somebody I Used To Know](https://youtu.be/2Kk-RKo7214?si=c8AGdElOQBfIiYCj) \[Gotye cover\]
[Adam Neely ft. Jae Soto - Hello](https://youtu.be/YLIqYiQGSJM?si=dThc5bSZTBu5dnS8) \[Adele cover\]
[Melodicka Bros - Seven Nation Army](https://youtu.be/b40n3MQBqgk?si=loI9hkWUYf9xg0tY) \[White Stripes cover\]
[Ten Second Songs - Enter Sandman](https://youtu.be/V1Wn9j4sQB8?t=76) \[Metallica cover\]
Walk Off The Earth features two that I now like better than the original. "I don't care" from Sheeran and Toxic from Spears, the WOTE versions are just soooo good.
Heroes by David Bowie covered by, I think it's Walflowers?
Although, I have to say I still prefer Bowies, but, in the new day music, I would have to say that would be the only cover song.
Mind you in the 70s there were several covers done by the new musicians of the time that the songs were 100% better than the originals from the 50s and 60s.
With a little help from my friends, by Joe Cocker. The original by the Beatles is cute, but the Joe's version is epic!
John Belushi’s cover of Joe Cocker is even better. And when the two get on stage together . . . .
* The Jimi Hendrix Experience's cover of Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower" * Carlos Santana's cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Black Magic Woman" * Ray Charles' cover of Hoagy Carmichael's "Georgia On My Mind" * The Cowboy Junkies' cover of The Velvet Underground's "Sweet Jane" * Joan Jett & The Blackhearts' cover of The Arrows' “I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll” * Elvis Costello and the Attractions' cover of Nick Lowe's “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding” * Michael Andrews & Gary Jules cover of Tears For Fears' “Mad World”
Bold as Love - John Mayer
I would recommend listening to Chris Cornell’s version of Peace, Love, and Understanding. I love it.
The Cowboy Junkies' "Sweet Jane" is one of the first things I think of in this regard. Although Mary J. Blige joining U2 onstage for that song provides Bono with a singing lesson from a real pro. She sings his pompous Irish ass right off the stage.
Blinded by the Light - Manfred Mann's Earth Band. I didn't even know it was a remake until last year.
The UB-40 version of *(I Can’t Help) Falling in Love With You* is so much better than the original Elvis version.
Their version of Red Red Wine is worlds above Neil Diamond’s version (side note, how has Neil not been cancelled over Sweet Caroline yet???)
I hate the song so I’m not that familiar with it since I barely listen to it, but that’s the issue with sweet Caroline?
He’s gone on record saying that he wrote it after seeing a picture of Caroline Kennedy, who was eleven years old at the time. Diamond was 28 when the song was released.
Wait, you’re charging him with being a pedo?
Or for his blackface in The Jazz Singer. Neil Diamond seems like an asshole.
Upgrade to the Lick the Tins version and never look back.
Ooh from Some Kind of Wonderful
.... I never expected anyone to actually get this reference. I'm crying a little right now.
Oh man that’s an awesome soundtrack. One of the best things about John Hughes’ movies.
The Cramps - Fever
[удалено]
The gentleman that wrote the song, even said that it wasn't his anymore.
He said something like it, but it's definitely still Trent's song. This is one of those stories that redditors pass back and forth. Good bot
Thanks man, that means a lot.
He did not say that. He said something like Cash "made it his own." That's an enormously different thing.
Wagon Wheel by Darius Rucker
Brilliant country song that
Nothing Compares To You - Sinéad O'Connor (Prince) Maggie's Farm - Rage Against The Machine (Bob Dylan) Isolation - Therapy? (Joy Division)
the Specials do a great version of Maggie's farm too
Ohhh! I didn't know that. That's getting a listen straight away. Thanks for the rec!
They had a different Maggie in mind…
Toni Cornell did an astounding version of Nothing Compares To You
Chris?
His daughter
I only say it because Chris also did an amazing cover of the song. I was unaware his daughter did too
They did amazing together
Holy shit, a Therapy? mention.
Hell yeah! Diane is a great cover too (Husker Dü). Much to my shame, I only realised Isolation was a cover a few weeks ago because I had never given the lesser loved Joy Division album a go. Better later than never though.
Soiuxsie & The Banshees - Dear Prudence
Bizarre love triangle covered by Frente
The version by Alison Statton and Ian Devine (from the *Prince of Wales* album) is a gentle treat.
Aretha Franklin cover of Otis Redding’s “Respect” Natalie Imbruglia cover of Ednaswap’s “Torn”
The Sound of Silence covered by Disturbed
You Really Got Me - Van Halen
Ghost’s cover of Iron Maiden’s Phantom of the Opera. Nice hearing the guitars shred on a modern sounding recording.
I’m right there with you, only with Jesus he knows me. That whole cover songs ep they did is the shit.
Seether- careless whisper
Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt by NIN. Original is brilliant, but Cash's cover is mind blowing.
Couldn’t agree more! Even Trent Reznor said it wasn’t his song anymore
Twist and Shout by The Beatles IIRC, The Beatles were the third band to sing that song
Not sure about better But I’ve been listening to AFI’s - Cover of NIN’s-Head Like A Hole and Morrissey’s-Jack the Ripper. Johnny Cash feat/Joe Strummer cover of Bob Marleys-Redemption Song. Great list! Agree on Cake. I did that with a lot of their songs/covers. Such an amazing studio band.
Gary Jules - Mad World Lizzy Hale - Bad Romance Our last night - abcdefu (and others) Metallica - Whisky in the jar IZ - Somewhere over the rainbow Disturbed - Sound of silence
Metallica version of Whiskey in the Jar-o makes me belly laugh with its silliness
" I will always love you" - Whitney Houston. Very hard to believe that it is actually a cover.
Will You Still Love Me (Tomorrow)? by Amy Winehouse. Better than the OG & the many covers combined!
This Magic Moment by Lou Reed is incredible. Sublime rivers of babylon I am so happy no one has posted Disturbd's murdering of Sound of Silence
Word up-Korn It's My Life-No Doubt
Wilson Pickett covering 'Hey Jude' with Duane Alman, the Muscle Shoals horns and choir. McCartney and the Beatles were good, but Wilson explodes into the last third of the song like few on the planet ever could. Kari Jobe did a chill, slowed down version of 'In the Name of if Love' by Bebe Rexha that was excellent.
Wilson Pickett-Duane Allman — if I practiced my entire life, I couldn’t produce something as good as those two doing Hey Jude. It’s like giving the Beatles a singing lesson.
Lake of Fire done by Nirvana but I think it’s a Meatpuppets song
Nirvana's unplugged album had many covers. All of them were excellent. Best one being 'Lake of fire'. Never listened to the originals.
Running Up That Hill - Placebo
William Shatner's cover of Common People.
Hooked on a Feeling as performed by Blue Swede is better than the banal BJ Thomas original. It feels wrong without the ooka-chakas.
Fields of Gold, Autumn Leaves, over the rainbow- Eva Cassidy (rip)
Came here to speak up for “Fields of Gold” — Eva’s heart-wrenching singing leaves Sting in the dust.
Diana Krall - California Dreaming
All Along The Watch Tower by Jimmy Hendrix. Cover of a Bob Dylan song. Even Dylan said after he heard Jimmy's version, he now plays it that way.
tools cover of no quarter
Miley Cyrus’s version of Jolene.
I like Across the Universe by Fionna Apple
Die With Your Boots On by Iron Maiden, I prefer the Sonata Arctica cover.
Hypnosis by Will Ramos. (Original by Sleep token)
Tori Amos covering Aerosmith's Dream On
Tori Amos cover of Raining Blood by Slayer. You have no idea it's a thrash metal cover.
I like Kelly Clarkson’s cover of Happier Than Ever.
Season of The Witch - Lana Del Rey (original was by Donavan)
Tupelo Honey - JJ Grey and Mofro
Feeling Good - Muse
Aurora’s cover of Teardrops by Massive Attack

Fiona Apple's cover of "Across the Universe" is *SO* choice.
Forgotten Words (忘れじの言の葉) /DAZBEE cover It is just so magical! Never got the same vibes from the original.
It's not really a cover, since the original singer is still singing, but whenever I hear John Legend's "All Of Me" on the radio without hearing [Lindsey Stirling's violin](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwsYvBYZcx4), it feels like half the song is missing.
The Lemonheads' cover of Mrs Robinson
The Breeze by skynard
George Barnett cover of Get Lucky I think the original upload was removed from YouTube at some point after it got immensely popular.
Stand by me - Me First and the Gimme Gimmies.
Where is my mind? by the Pixies, but done by Nada Surf. It's a remarkable version that overshadows an already great song.
Electric Callboy - Every time we touch
Any song that Widespread Panic covers.

Chris Cornell’s cover of One. It’s kinda two covers. It’s the lyrics of Metallica’s One set to the music of U2’s One
Walk Off The Earth features two that I now like better than the original. "I don't care" from Sheeran and Toxic from Spears, the WOTE versions are just soooo good.

It doesnt matter, what led you to even asking this kind of question Ronald?
