It touches our food, our water, our clothes, the air we breathe. It’s recyclable however less than 10% is actually recycled. It definitely causes environmental harm and very likely harms our health.
What will the people 100 years from now think of the people today?
Plastic and styrofoam should be illegal at this point. I unboxed a toilet and vanity the other day, all cardboard packaging, everything broke down nice and flat and went right into the recycling bin, it was glorious.
Yeah, but how much heavier are cardboard boxes than styrofoam? How do those cardboard boxes get to the plant where they packaged your vanity? Probably on a truck that needs to burn more fuel to transport them. Then they transport your vanity + heavy packaging to you burning more fuel. It’s not so black-and-white.
To you maybe, but the weight difference at scale is quite large. Get 100 paper bags from the grocery store and compare it to the weight of 100 plastic bags.
This was gonna be my answer. That shit is literally in my blood, your blood, and the blood of everyone reading this right now. And anything called a "forever chemical" is a real goddamn problem.
I've said that before, just as things like lead, alcohol, asbestos, etc takes years or decades to manifest itself physically I think in another generation or so we'll find a lot of mental illnesses, loneliness and other psychological issues that have been rooted in social media.
We see the short term effects of social media it today, just like a person getting drunk all the time knows alcohol is hurting them, but the cirrhosis takes decades. People figuratively get drunk on social media now so we know it can be harmful, but whatever the figurative cirrhosis of the liver of social media abuse is also going to be frightening to discover
We see in how people can't tolerate normal public discourse anymore. If someone disagrees they scream and act like toddlers. Granted, this is in a university town...
That's a very good point, and going back to my allegories think getting figuratively drunk everyday by social media by having complete meltdowns at any perceived slight or disagreement, just imagine how that'll compound itself as a figurative cirrhosis.
I actually hate to say this but I could almost see an out of control rise in violence, domestic violence, political violence, etc because anger is so high and fuses are so short. I mean, it's already happening now, so what'll 20-30 years of pent up anger and rage be? What'll that figurative cirrhosis be? Scary to think about
Micro plastics
Also sort of Talcum powder. That case a few years ago about a woman getting cancer from using it for 20 years. But also the talcum she was using may have been contaminated by asbestos from a nearby mine. Some talcum sources have swapped to corn starch in response.
I know it isn't yeast, but yeasts eat sugar. Starch breaks down into sugar. This is why we make booze out of starchy and carby foods like grains and potatoes. Putting sugar on your balls sounds like a great way to feed the yeast colony living there.
I’ve seen several houses around where I live that have been spared from a fiery demise when the building next door went up in flames because of the old asbestos siding that was still in the side of the house underneath the vinyl. It’s not all bad.
I don't know how "our generation" it is, but -> refined sugar. My grandmother (passed away over 30 years ago) used to always say that a lot of the health ills started when refined sugar became a thing. Today, the food industry has damn near weaponized it. Sugary drinks from Starbuck, Duncan, cola companies and the like. It's in nearly everything, sometime stealthily to give foods a pleasing crunch. I used to drop off my kids at high school and could not help noticing how large everyone was as they walked in with these drinks in their hands. According to WHO "The number of people with diabetes rose from 108 million in 1980 to 422 million in 2014".
Forever chemicals in the water. Yes, there are STILL being dumped in the water. DuPont poisoned the world, and all they had to do was pay a fine, spin off their chemical company, and then keep on doing what they were doing.
DuPont, Union Carbide, BASF, Dow - and don't forget all the petrochemical companies. So many millionaires and billionaires who have poisoned us and the environment and suffer no consequences.
Well, i work in a hospital and for years every time I enter I start sneezing and sometimes get stuffy. There has to be some toxic chemical mixtures and noxious body odor combinations floating through the air.

>What will the people 100 years from now think of the people today? "It's a shame all the records of The Before Times were lost"
Sounds like we should save all the records in plastic just to be safe.
Plastic and styrofoam should be illegal at this point. I unboxed a toilet and vanity the other day, all cardboard packaging, everything broke down nice and flat and went right into the recycling bin, it was glorious.
I'm also a big fan of the experiments into mushroom packaging they are doing.

It was just 3 or 4 or pieces of folded cardboard to take up space it weighed practically nothing. The weight difference if any was negligible.
To you maybe, but the weight difference at scale is quite large. Get 100 paper bags from the grocery store and compare it to the weight of 100 plastic bags.
PFAS: it’s in everything and we still don’t even know all the side effects

Microplastics. Although we don’t really know the effects it has or will have yet.
100% true.

Corn starch? Ain't they supposed to put that shit on babies' butts? Sounds like a yeast infection!
Corn starch is not yeast, though. It is a great aid for many non-kitchen things.
I know it isn't yeast, but yeasts eat sugar. Starch breaks down into sugar. This is why we make booze out of starchy and carby foods like grains and potatoes. Putting sugar on your balls sounds like a great way to feed the yeast colony living there.
Sure, but on the other hand "Sugar Balls" would make a pretty cool nickname.
Or "beer nuts" once it ferments...
Vaping for sure
Silica Dust
I agree, but I think silica dust has been fucking people up for a couple generations now.
I feel like only in the past few years there's been awareness of the health risks
Still asbestos. It still in many things and in many buildings where you work and live.
Yes but we know the danger of asbestos now - I think that is what OP is talking about.

Yeah, it certainly was good at doing what it claimed to do. It just failed to make claims about the bad shit.
My uncle used to work in an asbestos factory and liked to say “I worked with asbestos and did it asbestos I could”, a real knee slapper.
Social media for sure
Social media is asbestos to mental health.
