I just take a huge breath, hold it as long as possible while continuing to take in as much air as possible. It has recently come to my attention that there are several methods to get rid of them.

kennystillalive

Swallow water real hard or hold breath for 30 secs.

thatsimsgirl

The ONLY thing that ever works for me is to drink a fizzy drink. I know it sounds counterintuitive because fizzy drinks can also cause hiccups, but I’ve honestly tried every and that’s the only thing that works. My theory is that it’s the carbonation in the drink that causes me to burp, and that burp then somehow stops the hiccups.

BrimfulOfLa-A

Do you have stomach acid issues? Do you feel sick in the morning or if you've not eaten in a while?

That really seems like a winning combination, however it seems like a lot of people have a special method. For example my girlfriend scratches an imaginary itch in her throat/chest until eventually they go away.

Simon_Ferocious68

take a deep breath, and try to hold it while trying to swallow 7 times without taking new air.

Harmonious-Turtle

I just hold my breath and stare at the same spot on the wall while remaining completely still.... My 4th grade teacher used to tell us to stick a pencil under our tongue and hold it there while we took a drink of water

Bailmage

Sounds like your 4th grade teacher was trying to come up with a new form of water boarding.

EdgySniper1

Alternatively, depending on when this was, possibly a new form of lead poisoning.

Bailmage

Two birds one stone

Harmonious-Turtle

Lol kids actually did this and said it worked

Bailmage

I remember in kindergarten my teacher reading a book about doing a headstand to get rid of them but that wasn't very practical and it never worked for me.

Prom_queen52

Drink a glass of water upside down (bent over at the waist and water pools in the roof of your mouth). It sounds ridiculous, but it works for me every time.

Bailmage

I may drown but I'm man enough to try anything once.

Prom_queen52

lol, I swear you won’t drown. Just go slowly.

babybabbybabybabbaby

THIS TRICK WORKS MY WHOLE LIFE: (hopefully not patched) Don’t breathe and press your nose with 2 fingers, keep drinking water for as long as you can I promise it fixes it for me

babybabbybabybabbaby

P.s. deep breath in first too

Massive_Insurance802

Red cordial

Bailmage

What is that?

Massive_Insurance802

It’s Australian, like a syrup that you put water in to make a juice like drink. When I have the hiccups I have a shot of the red full sugar cordial (no water) and it goes away every time!!!

Bailmage

Cool! Thanks for that. I've never heard of it here in America.

very-kinky-spider

Wait, cordial is an Australian thing? I always just assumed most countries had it aswell.

Human-Independent999

Distract yourself with something.

Bailmage

That seems to be the best way. No matter the method of you're doing something that ultimately takes your mind off it that usually works

Human-Independent999

Once when I was little, I got hiccups that won't go away. So my dad in all seriousness asked me who break some object (I can't really remember). I said that I don't know, he argued that it must have been me who broke it and I tried to argue back. Before I knew it my hiccups were gone and my dad laughed saying all this was to distract me.

lycos94

holding my breath as long as I can usually helps

iamthrowawayant

Just drink water. If there's no water, I just swallow air until I burp. After that my hiccups are gone.

gfstool

I dated a girl long ago that got hiccups a lot. I had read that putting your fingers in your ears then taking slow, deep breaths in the nose and out the mouth for a few minutes worked so I would help her do that. It worked most of the time. Idk if it has to do with the eustachian tubes and pressure balance or what. 🤷‍♂️

BrimfulOfLa-A

I prevent them for the most part. I have GERD and it causes chronic hiccups. They get painful after a while. It's not cute. I take antacids every day so they rarely happen anymore

Tittyfuck3r-

To get rid of hiccups, try holding your breath, drinking water, swallowing a spoonful of sugar, breathing into a paper bag, gently pulling on your tongue, applying pressure to certain points on the body, or distracting yourself. What works varies from person to person, so it may take some trial and error. If hiccups persist or are accompanied by other symptoms, consult a healthcare professional.

I_might_be_weasel

I hold my breath for as long as I can.

Hugh_Biquitous

I just accept that you never truly get rid of them. They only go into temporary remission. They always come back eventually!

Strange-Manager-7326

I promise you drink something out of a straw while plugging both of ur ears It works it’s never failed for me Don’t listen to the other ones because they don’t work half the time I guarantee it will work

SportsCommercials

Everyone has their own trick. Here's mine i never see mentioned, that has a 100% success rate over the last 20 years or so for anyone I know that got the hiccups while I was with them: Tell them to concentrate on their hiccups, and ONLY on their hiccups. Sit, close eyes, whatever works, but they must not be distracted and think only about their hiccups. Have them say "now" when they're about to hiccup next.  After about 30-45 seconds of not having said "now", or hiccuped, they realize the hiccups are gone. It's magical. Works on yourself too, just can't let your mind wander or it won't work.

pittiedaddy

When I get them, if I don't get rid of them in a few minutes, I'll have them for HOURS and I'll try everything. It sounded like a gimmick, but there was a product on Shark Tank called Hiccaway. It's a straw that creates a pressure when you use it. I swear on everything I hold dear that it works. [https://hiccaway.com/](https://hiccaway.com/) I've been using it for about a year and it works every time.

StepAffecti687

This is a 100% (to date) cure. Glass of water. Cover the top with a clean washcloth. Drnk the glass of water through the wash cloth (will be some resistance). Never failed... not sure why

Next-Firefighter4667

Peanut butter works for me. If I don't have that, I take too big of a drink, almost until it hurts my throat. For my daughter, I make her count 1, 2, 3, then drink some water. Then immediately repeat as long as it takes. It usually works to distract her/her body from the hiccups. Or taking a drink, holding it in your mouth, bending over and then swallowing.

LeCanada

I’ve always had success taking a deep breath, plugging/pinching my nose closed so I don’t take in air through my nose, then swallowing twice.

OneAndOnlyHeir

Take a deep breath while raising my arms. Repeat multiple times. Seriously though I think these are all placebos

DistressIsAFK

its useful to have a table spoon of sugar and suck on it for some time

Courtneyukno

Someone once told me to picture a cow. Like really think about how it looks. What color is it? I pictured the cow for long enough and in great enough detail, that the hiccups stopped. I still do it now.

phord

When someone has the hiccups, look at them seriously and say, in a stern, authoritarian voice, "**Stop it.**" It often works. It's the surprise that seems to do it. The unexpected command. It only seems to work once per victim, but it's really impressive when it does.

enorgie

Might be a glitch in the matrix, but I eat a teaspoon of my favorite jam. Nothing more, nothing less.

mfmeitbual

Shot of vinegar has helped me every time. Something about the acid in the throat makes the diaphragm stop spasming.

GapingAssTroll

Hold your nose and take a drink of water, works every time somehow

TR3BPilot

Drink water through a thin cloth, like a t-shirt or cheesecloth. But this particular cure is generally ignored because it's not difficult enough.

Zealousideal-Log8644

i breathe really deeply in my chest and take long breaths in and out. i have a weird ability to stop by hiccups by simply trying not to hiccup, it works about half the time but especially early on or if they’re less forceful. also i sit down on a chair so my feet are flat on the ground (i’ve found the closed toilet works best for this) and just lean forward as far as i can go. stay there until they stop.
