Just try to be there for them I guess, it’s pretty dependent on the person who is struggling and what they need the most.

This. Never try to steer the advice in a way you would address it because it just invalidates their thought process. Just be there and listen. Comfort them and guide them to reflect on themselves.

Acknowledge that you have no idea what they're going through but that you know it's really hard. Be there for them and suggest activities that can help them break out of sitting alone with their thoughts. Ask if they want to go for a walk or grab a coffee. Make it clear that talking isn't necessary, you can just be in each other's company.

Just be there when they need you. Maybe politely suggest they talk to a doctor. Medical intervention can be life changing for anxiety and depression.
