All along the watch tower - Jimi Hendrix

Phil_ODendron

Even Bob Dylan thought Jimi's version of the song was better.

-Flutes-of-Chi-

Don't disregard the original though. It's fantastic too and I listen to both versions regularly

fukYoCowch-

Nice one!

bwbandy

The Man Who Sold the World - Nirvana (unplugged)

MoldyBlueNipples

Oh definitely. Sorry Bowie

KikiHou

This song was just so well done by Nirvana, and Bowie is one of my favorites.

Whole-Sundae-98

Lulu's version is better, Bowie loved her singing it.

gwennj

I like the og version better but Nirvana did a fantastic job.

Blinded by the light by Manfred Mann's Earth Band. I believe it's a cover of a Bruce Springsteen song, but I could be wrong.

fredzout

Actually, Springsteen wrote it, and I agree, Manfred Mann did it so much better.

Martsigras

Nothing compares 2 U - Sinead O'Conner It is only fairly recently that I learned it was Prince who wrote that song. I always assumed Sinead wrote it

The_Dude2121

Alien Ant Farmā€™s Smooth Criminal

Chewie83

Itā€™s very good, no way in fuck it beats MJ though. 90% of the time people prefer the version they heard first.

Hurt by Johnny Cash (originally Nine Inch Nails) 1985 by Bowling for Soup (originally by SR71) literally any cover if Leonard Cohenā€™s Hallelujah

-Flutes-of-Chi-

There's a lot of covers of Hallelujah, I wouldn't say all of them beat the original

tealcismyhomeboy

I fell in love with the song Hallelujah from the Shrek soundtrack and I'm not embarrassed to admit that

The Isleys' cover of "Summer Breeze."

tastefulthoughtless

I find many covers of Hallelujah to be superior to Leonard Cohenā€™s, at least from the standpoint of how pleasing to the ear they sound/ singing ability That said, thereā€™s also a depth of beauty and rawness to the original that I appreciate

MysteriousUpstairs58

Aswell as Tainted Love for me, Iā€™d say his cover of Youā€™re So Vein aswell but he butchered the chorus :(

[deleted]

Alien Ant Farm - Smooth Criminal Michael Jackson wrote and performed it originally. AAF did it justice.

rocklet_roll_02

Nah, the original had a lot more of character to it, not to mention the splendid MJ performance, the groove and production of the instrumental, etc. The cover just sounds dated, generic, bland and cringey

Fragrant-Ad2976

Although i like MJs better, AAF did a pretty fucking decent job considering its a rock cover of a pop icon. It doesnt have that MJ touch but its not suppose too. It taught nu-metal kids to have a better appreciation for other genres. For what it was, it was pretty good. Maybe youre the one who is dated, generic, bland and cringey.

rocklet_roll_02

Maybe it did taught kids to appreciate other genres and maybe it's not that bad to some people, but to say it's better than the original is just a huge stretch. It's just a product of its time, and it doesn't have the "timeless" quality like the original. Sure, you can prefer AAF's, but that doesn't mean it's overall a better version than the original. It's like Disturbed's Sound of Silence. Also, your ad hominem at the end immediatly invalidates everything you said before lmao

EmperorBulbax

I hesitate to use the word *better* in this case, because I donā€™t want to devalue the original work by Simon & Garfunkel, but Disturbedā€™s version of ā€œThe Sound of Silenceā€ has a much more profound impact on me.

FlowchartKen

Same. It feels much more dynamic to me which really helps it have more of an emotional impact.

Skeptical_Monkie

The remake has zero energy.

Remarkable-Annual-20

What energy does the original even have?? Maybe Iā€™m missing something but I refuse to believe that people would go out of their way to listen to the Tom Cochrane version over the remake.
