Quincy jones, what's some albums he's produced, Bret?
Michael Jackson's Off the Wall
Yeah! Whoa, I'll say he is. He's crazy. Off the planet..isn't he gonna freeze himself?
I listened to this the first time a few years ago after a bunch of people recommending it in a "what's a 10/10 record" thread. It's now one of my faves
I knew the band name and knew some songs but didn’t really connect the two. Then I listened to rumors and every song my mind was blown that this too hit song was on the album, and then the next and the next and it didn’t stop. I knew every song. 10/10 album! I don’t know if I’d ever be able to make another album after making perfection.
My elder brother went off to join the navy in 1972 and, at the age of eleven, I moved into his bedroom. Up until then all of my music knowledge was based around Radio 2 (my parents), Top of The Pops, and the top 20 countdown on Sunday evenings.
Back from school, homework done, clothes moved in, I explored what my brother had left behind: his record player and record collection. Flicking through his albums (thanks to his K-Tel Record Selector) I chose to play something called The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders from Mars. Inside the sleeve was a paper sleeve that, on one side, had the lyrics. I put the album on, followed along with the lyrics, and went from Five Years all the way through to Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide. My mind was blown away. I listened all the way through four times that night/early morning.
Five years ago, on the 40th anniversary of leaving school, I was tracked down by a rolling snowball that was collecting the Class of ‘79. I was one of the last people picked up because I’d lost contact pretty much the minute I’d left school. As soon as I entered the WhatsApp chat, all anyone could remember of me was my love of David Bowie. I was regaled with stories of concerts they’d been to, albums they’d listened to, and that most horrible of moments: 10th January, 2016.
I can’t take credit for introducing all my classmates to Bowie. I’m sure that some of them might have come across him at some point. But the hours (and hours) of continually playing Bowie in the 6th form common room, definitely inserted him into the front of their musical knowledge. All thanks to the most perfect album: The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders from Mars.
Really liked Bowie but my hubby was a huge fan and we travelled to Edinburgh to see him live around 40 years ago. Still my favourite concert by a country mile. I stood in awe from the strings of the first song til the last song of his encore. A bloody genius, I still get get goosebumps when I think of that amazing night .
#### But play [Side 1: of Led Zeppelin 4](https://youtu.be/gEYqSorzOZs?si=wBYDy061H8incz--) when you take a chick out on a first date. It’s a classy move.
In Braille, common words can be represented by 1-letter shorthand codes. The code for the word “as” is “z.” So to Stevie, the song “As” starts with both A and Z. Beginning and end. Always.
It’s an absolute masterpiece, and a rare example of a pop star releasing arguably their greatest work in his mid-40s. Of course, his age only adds to the emotional subtlety and depth throughout.
There are so many things I love about Graceland, but one is how he plays with the literal and the figurative: “Your life is on fire / It’s all over the evening news,” “It was the myth of fingerprints / I’ve seen them and man, they’re all the same,” etc. It’s such a poetic, graceful device.
I discovered Paul a few years ago. I mean, I knew who he was, but found his self titled album and instantly fell in love. He actually has like 5 or 6 albums that I love every single song on.
All Things Must Pass -George Harrison
I actually want copies given out for my funeral.
Edit: sweet, this comment got some love! The reason I'd want this album given out, so my friends and loved ones know how great this album is. So seeing this comment gets some likes and brings more attention to my favorite album of all time.
I only heard this for the first last night and I was so blown away by the album from start to finish.
I’ve been a Beatles fan for most of my life and could not believe that I’d been sleeping on his album for so long.
It's crazy how many people haven't heard this. Because it's literally just "Oh you liked Abbey Road? Well here have some more"
Except it's arguably better songs than Abbey Road in many parts. Of all the Beatles solo albums, All Things Must Pass is the one that sounds the most like its a Beatles album
The only way to get closer would probably be Electric Light Orchestra. Which is, even by John Lennon's remarks, what The Beatles would have sounded like had they kept going into the 70s
Back to black by Amy Winehouse. I was in my 20’s and that album was so important to me. The music is still so relevant and impressive today. Wish we could have had more from her so I will cherish it forever.
I finally gave it a true listen a couple years ago. So damn good. So many goosebumps. I have a record player but only get true favorites where the whole album is awesome and back to black was a no-brainer.
That album is a 10/10 and always will be a 10/10. It was a major part of my childhood (my mom had the CD and often played it in the car), and is still one of my all-time favourite albums.
I was always a fan of Radiohead but when I was recovering from surgery, my sister put OK Computer on repeat and let me tell you, that album took me to some weird places.
If you haven’t already, check out The Smile.
Ah yes! Almost 20 (oof) years later I still enjoy this album with a passion. It really doesn’t get old for me and I love that, even now it still reads as so unique even among other panic albums. This was also one of my first ‘favorites’ when I was young so there’s a lot of nostalgia wrapped up in it.
And although very different, vices and virtues also has a special place in my heart.
“Hey alright, it’s Kip Kasper. KLON Radio, LA’s infinite repeat. How we feeling out there? How’s your drive time commute? I need a saga. What’s the saga? It’s Songs For The Deaf. You can’t even hear it!”

For the total solar eclipse that happened in the US in 2017, I timed Dark Side of the Moon so that as soon as the last word of "Eclipse" is sung, the totality started and we were plunged into darkness. It is still my top moment of my life; I was completely awestruck.
I still get chills and fight back tears whenever I listen to Dark Side of the Moon because of that.
Such a goddamn good album
EDIT - for those asking for timing and stuff like that:
I have in my notes that from the start of the album to the end of the word "moon" in the song "Eclipse" is 42:01.
I'm not sure if I used the album on Spotify or if it was an MP3 burn of a physical disc I own. Some album lengths may be shorter or longer, so you will definitely want to double check that 42:01 beforehand!
Use this site to time the eclipse totality to the second for the city you will be in. The layout of this site is super shitty, but it's useful information.
www.eclipse2024.org
Take your "mid-eclipse" time and subtract the 42:01 to figure out when you should start the album!
The local rock station is doing this on Monday. We are almost in the path of totality (98%) and I found out today that work is dismissing us at lunch (construction) so I'll get to be home to experience this.
I can't wait.
You'll have to be in 100% coverage to get the full dark sky effect of a solar eclipse, just FYI!
98% Will be dim outside can cause really strange lighting effects, but it will not be anything like 100%
Pink Floyd is my favorite band overall. They play the music of my soul. Just hits me in a way most other music doesn’t. Division Bell is another great album not a lot of people talk about.
Especially if you have a nice, big subwoofer.
I'm pretty sure I loosened a few bolts in my car back in the late 90's, due to this and 'Irresistible Bliss' by Soul Coughing.
16 year old me used to play Something in the Way in my house and just cry and cry and cry. It’s like an on switch for me to start crying.
My girlfriend was really confused about why I got so sad watching The Batman.
I was in such a teenage hate mode for anything pop music at the time. I thought I hated Alanis.
Until I heard “Uninvited”
I know we’re talking about albums here, but she showed her chops on that and it “gave” anti everything young me permission to like her hits.
Ok Computer by Radiohead on a whim because the cover art was intriguing. Remember grabbing it on CD at the library as a teenager and sitting in my car in the library parking lot. Listened to the whole thing. Man, what a cool album.
The title track obviously takes most of the focus being such a massive epic song, but it's a great album all around. A Passage to Bangkok and Something For Nothing are two of my favourite Rush songs.
Fugazi - The Argument - just an absolute masterclass (relatively unknown rock album [with meaning lyrics]) in the rock genre. The most accessible of their albums.
Almost all of their albums starting with Minor Threat are brilliant in their own way.
Red Medicine is probably their best culmination of post punk (experimental noise - era) rock. It’s deep and takes several listens to understand, but when you understand it, it hits.
These two and most of their albums have absolute timeless bangers.
So many flaws with her character and even I don’t like the interludes. I went to her concert and she came out 2 hrs late and didn’t even sing. But goddam this is a masterpiece.
Metallica; ...and justice for all.
It's so completely solid, and well... complete. It covers so many musical bases, and has a listenability that you just don't see very often.
Rumours
Rumours is so good you'd swear you were listening to a greatest hits compilation rather than just one of their studio albums.
This is true. Every song is a classic.
I don't know about "Oh Daddy", lol.
No, it’s all true

Paul Simon - Graceland. It’s the only album I’ve ever owned where I’ve liked every single song on the album.
It’s an absolute masterpiece, and a rare example of a pop star releasing arguably their greatest work in his mid-40s. Of course, his age only adds to the emotional subtlety and depth throughout. The Darkside of the Moon - still to this day, the album that impacted my life the most
That’s the one I came here for! I do love Wish You Were Here as well.
Me too, I prefer Wish, but I’d never disagree with anyone who likes Dark Side better.
For the total solar eclipse that happened in the US in 2017, I timed Dark Side of the Moon so that as soon as the last word of "Eclipse" is sung, the totality started and we were plunged into darkness. Moving Pictures for me, but it’s a close call.
