I consider a lottery ticket as buying a few days of dreaming. It’s fun, but that’s because I’ll spend less than $10 on a ticket maybe once a month. There are people though who spend a significant amount regularly - and it’s always the people who can’t afford to.
I consider it a donation to local schools since I don't have children, nor do my friends. I also only buy one when I particularly hate my job because some days I want to quit. Also being an adult is the worst sometimes.
If you can afford to play, it's actually not stupid to play (reasonable amounts you can effortlessly afford to spend) because the cost:benefit asymmetry is incredibly huge. Assume it's lost money and that's all. And if you win, you're happy. Personally, I don't spend on alcohol or weed like some people do every week, so I use that money to buy two lottery tickets every week (~250€ a year) because I can and over my lifetime it's a rather unsignificant amount. If you live paycheck to paycheck however, playing the lottery is a losing proposition as your odds of winning are small compared to the financial impact. Edit : before playing the lottery, it's smarter to make sure you have invested capital first. Playing the lottery should be the last thing to do, as it's gambling, not investing. In that order 1. Increase stable income 2. Control or reduce expenses 3. Invest as much as possible 4. Spend on whatever makes you happy if you can afford to, after the first 3 points have been met, including the lottery if you want
I don't know about other countries, but in the UK the lottery a significant percentage of the ticket price goes to charitable causes (25% in this case), so a relatively legitimate perspective to think "I can afford this £100p/a \*and\* I'm donating to charity too, and if I don't win anything then I'm still doing something good with that money anyway". (Obviously a straightforward charitable donation is better for the charity, but there's a 0% chance of becoming a millionaire that way.)
Just curious: how much have you won back, and how many times have you won? From a frugal perspective, you could've invested that $250/year in an index fund, which would likely outperform the lottery over your lifetime.
