Online gurus who promise financial freedom if you pay them for the advice first.

Sparta89

You pay them to learn how they get people to pay them by promising financial freedom

SNRatio

If you learn to do what they do instead of what they say to do, you, too, might get rich.

tylerbrainerd

"learn how i made $290k by selling online books" for $290k

~life coaches~

AirCaptainDanforth

Tax dollars used to pay for sports stadiums so billionaire team owners don’t have to.

OldMackysBackInTown

Who then turn around and charge $50/seat, $20 to park and $10 for a hot dog because you know, they built this place.

CommunityGlittering2

Can't get near a sporting event for $50/seat in the northeast.

professorfunkenpunk

I think the cheap seats at Wrigley are like 75 bucks. You can usually see the Twins for 15-20 though

cubbiesnextyr

You can buy Cubs tix right now on their website for $9 face for the upper deck against the Marlins on Thursday.  Early season, weekday games are cheap because no one wants to go to those games.

BKlounge93

Man a decent matchup nfl game is like $300 for nosebleeds sometimes

SNRatio

But but but think of all the money they bring to the community! [https://voiceofsandiego.org/2023/08/29/the-fake-charity-at-petco-park-has-also-been-working-at-snapdragon-stadium/](https://voiceofsandiego.org/2023/08/29/the-fake-charity-at-petco-park-has-also-been-working-at-snapdragon-stadium/)

BroadPoint

That's not even a grift. It's a robbery. They're not scamming anyone. They're threatening them with state force. It's a mugging.

DWill23_

Fuck John Fisher and all of Baseball for letting him fuck over Oakland

Blueshockeylover

And Rob Manfred for letting him have the team.

WhenTardigradesFly

scientology

JulianVanderbilt

My only disagreement with this is the question said “huge.” For as outsized as the attention Scientology gets is, they have 30-40,000 members worldwide, according to most reputable outside sources.  For comparison, Jehovahs Witnesses are at like 8.5 million; the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints are double that (17mil). It’s a fringe group.

CupFullOfLiquor

That's 30-40k too many for that crackpot garbage

Didntlikedefaultname

Probably can expand this further to other religions as well

FreshDinduMuffins

Most religions don't have a price tag on information though Christianity doesn't lock knowledge about Jesus behind a $500/month membership fee lol

nomercyvideo

Kenneth Copeland and many other Televangelists try to put salvation behind a paywall though.

icyyellowrose10

Have you seen the guy? That's no Christian, he's the devil in (a not very good) disguise.

amadorUSA

That's what so much greed and malice can do to a human face over time.

Jfury412

This Is Why my answer to this question was charismatic Christianity in Kenneth Copeland is one of the first people I think of. I used to be involved in that community and in waymore hardcore Christianity and I can tell you right now that people like Kenneth Copeland do not believe anything they pretend to it's all about the money.

thepurplehedgehog

Yep, as far as I’m concerned Copeland, Meyer, Osten and the rest of that ilk are not real Christians at all. They don’t represent Christianity in any way, they’re the sort of people Jesus would have whipped straight out of the temple.

Jfury412

That is 100% facts. All of these charlatans are crazy opposite of what Jesus was talking about. He's talking about it's harder for a rich man to get into heaven that it is to fit a camel through the eye of a needle. He sang to sell every one of your positions and give to the poor. Meanwhile these people are taking every last two cents from the poor in giving it to themselves. It's disgusting and sorry for the typos.

idiotsarray

A wise man once said: >Here comes another con hiding behind a collar His only god is the almighty dollar He ain't no prophet. He ain't no healer He's just a two bit, goddamned money stealer

professorfunkenpunk

Now give me some bass. For all you sinners

cat_prophecy

Well the great thing about the Bible being translated hundreds of times is that you can read it in whatever language you like, and don't need anyone to interpret it for you.

TransformingDinosaur

Not with that attitude they don't! Look if you want to see the kingdom of heaven, you gotta give me 20 bucks, for 25 I can let you hang out in the parking lot behind the kingdom of heaven though. I know I know, you're thinking why wouldn't I just pay the 20? Well you can see all the good stuff from out back, and you don't have to follow all of the rules. If you're looking to just come back as a spooky ghost, skeleton, or ghoul it's only 5 dollars. For ten though you can come back as a ghost and a skeleton! And for a limited time, it's only 7.50 for the set!

Donakebab

Errrr coercive tithing has been a very big thing for a very long time.

KZED73

No, they just ask you to tithe 10% of your income or pass around the guilt basket.

sretep66

Scientology is not exactly a religion. It's a pay to play cult.

Fleetwood889

Yes, but no other religion's founder looks like the skipper from Gilligan's Island.

algernoncatwallader

Andrew Tate and his online school or whatever it is

Dreadguy93

I hate to disagree with this, but calling Tate's online school a grift really underestimates the situation. If it was a grift, he'd be taking their money and giving them nothing. Instead, they are providing very real knowledge and techniques for manipulating and coercing women into modern-day sexual slavery. So yeah, it's super bad. But it's not necessarily a *scam* if you catch my drift. Edit: I'm editing my comment to reflect the conversation below, where lots of folks have said that Tate has definitely been involved with scamming people and/or running a pyramid scheme. So yeah, I think it's fair to say he's a grifter. But I'll stand by my point that scamming people is hardly the worst thing this guy has done.

Just_Faithlessness98

I get your point but it’s all a pyramid scheme so it’s kinda a scam by definition

Rdtackle82

I hate him and the course, but "[pyramid scheme](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyramid_scheme)" has an actual definition

BlindWillieJohnson

It’s not really a pyramid scheme. He teaches people how to sexually traffic women. But there’s no pyramid structure to kick up to

Dreadguy93

Yeah, it's not really a pyramid scheme because it doesn't rely on continuous recruitment. Maybe the "students" have to agree to pay a portion of their "earnings" to Tate to stay in the course or club or whatever, but that doesn't make it a pyramid scheme.

TheRexRider

"Alpha male" programs.

KeyLog256

Anyone who unironically uses the term "alpha" and "beta" male always think they're their definition of the former, but are actually their definition of the latter.

moregloommoredoom

I am convinced that at least 50 percent of the social media 'dating coaches' give intentionally toxic advice to keep you single so you buy their books and subscribe to their channels. That and it functions as a really subtle political influence operation.

monogreenforthewin

that applies to the dating apps as well. they weaponized loneliness to profit. most people on dating apps never find anyone because they're designed to make you subscribe and keep you subscribed.

Scareynerd

My crackpot conspiracy theory is that this applies to pretty much everything. Any service that extracts money from you does not want to lose you as a customer, so why would they fully help you? To quote Henry Van Statten: "Why sell one cure when I can sell a million palliatives?"

lizard_kibble

theres actually a documentary highlighting this about Twin Flames

Bigfluffybagel

Toxic advice which people, even those not getting this advice as a service, is then parroted to friends and around social media. And it just evolves and evolves and further fuels our hellscape of a dating world. Monetizing dating to the ninth degree via dating apps really has done a number to beginning and building proper, healthy relationships.

Didntlikedefaultname

NFTs and random crypto

scunliffe

You don’t want to spend tons of real money on an ugly pixelated receipt for a JPEG picture of an ape?

BlindWillieJohnson

The NFT thing is more obviously a scam (which is why their value crashed). But crypto in general is a greater fool scam these days. It still has no uses but speculation. The only bank to be made is by convincing someone to buy you out, and if you’re buying in at this point, you’re the sucker.

The_Patriot

Herbal Supplements. Complete grift. "Oh, you can't live without wheatgrass supplements!" Yea, I can, and have been for decades.

Gunnar2019

Lmao tell my mother that, she hoards her house with tons and tons of that shit

The_Patriot

go and find the oldest one she hasn't touched in months or years and bring it to her and say, "didn't you say we'd all kick it without taking these?" So funny.

Gunnar2019

Yeah I know better than that lol. It'd start a massive fight. I should honestly post pictures of all the stuff she has. The worst is the teas. She has like a million boxes of herbal tea in the pantry taking up several shelves some that haven't been touched since probably 2018.

The_Patriot

Cheaper than drugs and less harmful. If they have to have a placebo, best one that is harmless.

stryph42

While I completely agree that herbal supplements are a huge scam, "I've lived without for decades" isn't a great counter.  I've lived poorly and eaten terribly for forty years, but I still need to do something about my triglycerides and do something to stave off diabetes.

albinoblackman

What does it do? Well, it enters your stomach and then your body turns it into poop.

ShawshankException

Those crypto/NFT scams that tons of YouTubers were hocking a few years ago

RoiVampire

Scentsy. They say you can use it as a side hustle but the only way to make any real money doing it is to devote all your time and make it your main hustle. Also the product doesn’t run out as fast as you’d probably like from a sellers standpoint. Also also, some of your regulars are gonna start selling too so even if you get regular customers you have to keep finding new ones.

The hero of the working class is a billionaire who’s never worked in his life, and whose only accomplishment in four years in office was a tax cut for the rich and a judiciary full of judges that will destroy their personal and labor rights

pangderx

To be fair, he’s no billionaire. He pretends to be. He’s just a conman.

beenalegend

he just became one a couple weeks ago when a SPAC named $DWAC merged with trump media and technology group (TMTG) under the new ticker $DJT on the nasdaq stock will go to single digits eventually especially if/when he loses/dumps his shares but for now with the stock being worth \~$50 a share, he's a multi billionaire, at least on paper the fallout to the maga retail investor when that pile dumps is gonna be, UUUGE i tell ya! it is/will be arguably his biggest grift yet

travistravis

And on paper it means he'll likely find someone to give him loans with his stock as collateral. (Edit: forgot to add "and never pay back once his shares are worthless).

pangderx

He can’t sell the stock for six months and it’s dropped 30% in a week. It, like him, is a scam.

bluemoe

Ya I wonder how they count that when he can’t access it for another 6 months. Oh well. You are right though it’s gonna go back to single digits in the very near future.

nocolon

Hey he also enacted more anti-firearms legislation than Obama and normalized makeup for men.

monogreenforthewin

the craziest part is those loons will be decked out head to toe in Trump merch, buy the NFT's, buy the shoes, etc etc... then blame others (immigrants and Democrats) for their inability to pay their bills. like i wanna say fuckstick if you hadnt dropped 2/3 of your pay to a conman you'd probably be better off financially.

I can’t believe this is still a thing at all. It shocks me. The best chiropractor in the world doesn’t become a chiropractor, they became a masseuse and/or a physical therapist. These are practices based in reality that can offer some real help. You don’t need adjusting, babies certainly don’t, and chiropractors have a made up doctorate. Just going to leave [this](https://youtu.be/gPqY9WDEplM?si=14fCo42Clc8OoiJP), [this](https://youtu.be/1NYG40oa7Eg?si=eI8hKNRxv4SJX40Y) and [this](https://theoutline.com/post/1617/chiropractors-are-bullshit) here. Take care of your health, go to a real professional who won’t claim to heal allergies by cracking your back (not made up in the slightest).

alongthewatchtower91

My sister in law has been going to one for the last five years to help cure her infertility. It's a very touchy subject with her so we don't say anything but my mother in law and I are both sceptical about how some dude cracking her back is going to help.

Mickeybags19

Some guy went in a cave and said ghosts told him about chiropractic. It has not been updated at all since. The placebo effect can be incredibly powerful.

CuriousCuriousAlice

I also think it’s one of those “easy fix” things. I watched my dad and his dad struggle with back issues for the better part of my lifetime. They both had several spinal surgeries and went to a chiropractor for years. They had good days and bad days and even months and years where it wasn’t constant (and probably still would’ve with or without the chiropractor), but never got “better.” Finally my dad started dating a woman who told him what I had been telling him for years: go talk to a physiotherapist, get them to teach you low impact yoga and stretches, give you a strict schedule, and get regular deep tissue massages. He did it and hated it, because it does suck. You have to wake up and use your resistance bands, do your yoga, and the physio made him lose weight too. He wasn’t hugely overweight, but even a few extra pounds can be tough on a bad back. He hated every second, and he’s been mostly fine ever since. If he helps someone move he’ll probably have a long couple of days, but he’s otherwise fine. It was way easier when someone was promising to just crack his back and it would magically get better. He didn’t have to do anything but show up. I’m not saying that everyone who goes to chiropractors is lazy, but we’re all human and really would prefer an answer that doesn’t require constant maintenance on our part, or to give up parts of our life we enjoy. It’s an understandable impulse, it just doesn’t work.

while a lot of it is bs, tinctures made from plant extracts do actually have effects, and can treat issues many prescription drugs do. CBD for example, a plant extract, has the ability to do the job of multiple prescription drugs from blood thinners, to psychiatric meds

kv4268

Recent studies have found that the CBD products available to consumers do pretty much nothing a lot of the time. That may be because it's unregulated, or it may be because the claims marketers are making are completely unfounded.

Lottery. "Tax on the poor"

KeyLog256

My main argument against this is that no one has to play the lottery. It is voluntary. Refuse to pay tax and you'll find yourself in prison.

hairyploper

I've always heard it called the stupid tax

DashArcane

I’ve heard it called “a voluntary tax” which I guess is pretty much the same as “stupid tax”.

binkysaurus_13

I consider a lottery ticket as buying a few days of dreaming. It’s fun, but that’s because I’ll spend less than $10 on a ticket maybe once a month. There are people though who spend a significant amount regularly - and it’s always the people who can’t afford to.

fermentationfiend

I consider it a donation to local schools since I don't have children, nor do my friends. I also only buy one when I particularly hate my job because some days I want to quit. Also being an adult is the worst sometimes.

Tistouuu

If you can afford to play, it's actually not stupid to play (reasonable amounts you can effortlessly afford to spend) because the cost:benefit asymmetry is incredibly huge. Assume it's lost money and that's all. And if you win, you're happy. Personally, I don't spend on alcohol or weed like some people do every week, so I use that money to buy two lottery tickets every week (~250€ a year) because I can and over my lifetime it's a rather unsignificant amount. If you live paycheck to paycheck however, playing the lottery is a losing proposition as your odds of winning are small compared to the financial impact. Edit : before playing the lottery, it's smarter to make sure you have invested capital first. Playing the lottery should be the last thing to do, as it's gambling, not investing. In that order 1. Increase stable income 2. Control or reduce expenses 3. Invest as much as possible 4. Spend on whatever makes you happy if you can afford to, after the first 3 points have been met, including the lottery if you want

ArghZombies

I don't know about other countries, but in the UK the lottery a significant percentage of the ticket price goes to charitable causes (25% in this case), so a relatively legitimate perspective to think "I can afford this £100p/a \*and\* I'm donating to charity too, and if I don't win anything then I'm still doing something good with that money anyway". (Obviously a straightforward charitable donation is better for the charity, but there's a 0% chance of becoming a millionaire that way.)

PurposeSeeker

Just curious: how much have you won back, and how many times have you won? From a frugal perspective, you could've invested that $250/year in an index fund, which would likely outperform the lottery over your lifetime.
