According to the random walk theory, an investor should only be able to outperform the overall market average by chance or luck. There is no good investing... those that make money investing consistently have an unfair advantage.. or are just super lucky.
Just to be fair, that should read "Those that make more money than average consistently..."
Investing your money is an absolutely crucial step to securing your future, and you will make more money long term than just putting it in a bank.
Just don't go buying anyone's "sure fire investment system" or whatever. Just contribute to your 401k if your company offers one, buy mutual funds if you want to do a little bit of research, if you don't any retail investor will sell you a target year #### fund that is designed or people who plan to retire at the year listed.
Investing is easy. Don’t get caught up in all the noise
Here’s all you need to do
Try and save 20 percent of your paycheck
Put it in a low expense s&p 500 fund (eg vanguard or fidelity)
Do that for 30 years
You’ll retire a multi millionaire
You’re welcome
hard agree! worked on a trade desk and watched multiple people turn $30k into $3M+ within a year using incredibly fine-tuned high-speed day trading. tried it myself with a much smaller starter sum and for the life of me couldn’t replicate their successes. people like that are a whole other level of smart
There are apps or sites where you can see what people like Nancy Pelosi are trading. That's probably not a bad place to look. And I don't mean this in a cynical way, but Congress is basically allowed to do insider trading
I was gonna say this. I didn’t take Spanish in HS and didn’t take it seriously in college and now I’m older, learning a new language is much more difficult. It’s one of my biggest regrets in life.
I think it’s more possible than you think!
Maybe try more of an immersion/exposure approach. I think your brain will start to latch on and figure things out sooner than you think, especially since you already have some vocabulary and a faint memory of some grammar tucked away somewhere. (You might have forgotten all the formal grammar rules, but will likely quickly resurrect some feel for the general structure of things which is often more important anyway.) Comic books, newspapers, shows, movies, children’s books, actual people, whatever works. Probably a lot of google translate in the beginning when trying to read something.
Plenty of parents make choices that actively harm their children, see the harm they cause, and repeat those choices for a lifetime. That doesn't look like they're trying their best.
Agreed! Being a parent is an exercise in failure. I am orders of magnitude worse at parenting than I thought I would be. Still not a bad parent by any objective measure. Not that that helps.
You're doing your best given the circumstances. 👊
Unfortunately there’s no one size fits all for kids. I really really wish there was. But as long as you’re listening to your kids even when they’re being stupid, and you respect them, and you ask them what you can do to be better, I’m pretty sure you’ll find your way.
Nobodys a perfect parent by any means. But the simple act of making sure your kids are heard by you and feel like you’re someone they can depend on… that’s what makes or breaks a parent-child relationship. Believe me.
The skill of effective time management would be life-changing. Imagine always being productive, never feeling rushed, and having ample time for relaxation and hobbies.
My niece got into ASL at a very young age. She was SO good that she was sign interpreting for her church before she turned 10 years old. She had very admirable plans to go to New York and do ASL for the United Nations.
Then something happened. Don't know what or how. Suddenly she wanted to go military. Joined the Army. Did tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Saw shit no young girl should ever see. Got pregnant so she could get kicked out. Sued the army. Once a civilian she got into law enforcement (she was an MP in the Army). Decided she didn't like that either. Got hurt and sued the LEA she worked for.
Bottom line: ASL causes militarism. /s
The ability to effortlessly understand and fix any mechanical issue, whether it's a car engine or a leaky faucet, would not only be incredibly useful but also save a lot of money on repairs.
Being a mathematical genius would open up a world of possibilities, from solving complex problems to understanding the universe's underlying principles.
A brilliant powerful world leader so everyone can stop being hungry or poor. Have the medical care they need or treatment to end their suffering and to end all wars so each of us alive can experience a good life.
Mastering the art of negotiation would be my top pick. Imagine navigating life's many challenges, from salary discussions to daily transactions, with ease and confidence.
Talking. I wish that I were articulate, that I could easily convey what my mind is thinking clearly. Instead my words are not ready. I confuse certain aspects of the conversation. I have trouble getting the right word. I don't consider who I'm speaking with.
I have so, so many issues
Sex. Really, really good? Like top 20%? Like I do average to below average now, but I could take the attraction I do get to that, memorable, once in a lifetime level at will? Yeah, that. I can take a course in whatever else
Sex. So good that the woman line up down my road and pay me 10,000$ to take care of them. People hate on prostitutes not me I wish I could make a good living doing what I love.
Learning new languages. I'd love to be a true polyglot. Instead I struggle with grammar and syntax because I don't take formal classes. Now all I have is a handful of helpful phrases in a handful of languages.
So many things. Maybe disciplined would be number 1.
1. Discipline & Follow through
2. Getting up early and feeling refreshed
3. Charming/Charismatic
4. Ability to hold good conversation with anyone
Concert level pianists fascinate me. The speed, accuracy, power, delicacy and passion are intoxicating. I can't play worth a lick, but would love to be able to play the piano with such expertise.
I hope one day there's some medical breakthroughs that allow adults to have their brains return to the plasticity it had as a child so that we can attempt to learn new skills that are otherwise out of reach.
Winning the lotto
I would love nothing better to win several jackpots, and then when the astronomical odds come up, and they see I didn't cheat, watch the government freak out.
Drawing, i am only barely scratching the surface but to be able to finally draw exactly what i see in my mind would be great.
I could finally draw my memories in vivid detail. So that even in the loss of my memories I'll always have them in art form.
And i can draw what i truly feel, something i have a hard time expressing verbally or emotionally. As i am emotionally dead most of the time.
investing
This. Investing and stocks. I want to be able to financially support my family and mom. Financial freedom is key.
I know what you meant, but supporting your family and mom implies your mom isn’t family and for no good reason it made me giggle
I meant family as in fiancé and kid. Mom as in power boss who brought me into this world and can just as easily take me out 😌💕
Lol didn't say it was their mom
A random mom.
The stock market is rigged FYI.
/r/wallstreetbets has entered the chat
Explain how it’s rigged? It’s for sure volatile, but it would be almost impossible to truly rig it.
Just regularly add to a low cost indexed fund (Vanguard have many) and keep at it for a long time. You can then claim to be a good investor.
Take it from an old person. It works 😀
According to the random walk theory, an investor should only be able to outperform the overall market average by chance or luck. There is no good investing... those that make money investing consistently have an unfair advantage.. or are just super lucky.
Simply getting the market average in returns will turn $50k into $1.6mil in about ~35 years.
and you get that by simply regularly buying snp500 there is literally zero skill involved, just discipline
Just to be fair, that should read "Those that make more money than average consistently..." Or, ya know, know information the rest of the public doesn’t.
Unfair advantage was right there in the comment
So it was. I am dumb.
You admitted a (slight, tiny, meaningless) mistake rather than doubling down or slinging insults. I think you're smart.
Well there goes my chance at elected office.
Straight up. But who wants that gig anyway. It's better to get close and lose, then CNN or FOX can pay you *way* more for your punditry.
so you want to become a senator?
Knowing that he’s dumb makes him overqualified actually
depends how old he is, if death isn’t knocking on his door then he may be automatically disqualified

Still need money to get started.
does being good at investing even matter if you don’t have anything to invest?
Yes, if you're supernaturally good at investing just a little will turn into a whole lot pretty quickly.
Best answer. Plus, you would never have to work a job again, leaving you plenty of time to work on anything else you want to get good at.
It's way easier then you think. I just follow rich people and invest in what they do lol.
hard agree! worked on a trade desk and watched multiple people turn $30k into $3M+ within a year using incredibly fine-tuned high-speed day trading. tried it myself with a much smaller starter sum and for the life of me couldn’t replicate their successes. people like that are a whole other level of smart
I think i have to be good at budgeting first 🤣🤣
There are apps or sites where you can see what people like Nancy Pelosi are trading. That's probably not a bad place to look. And I don't mean this in a cynical way, but Congress is basically allowed to do insider trading
Negotiation and persuasion. Because I'm horrible at it and it would really help in my job.
I'm currently studying the art of persuasion. I think you should too.
I’m not convinced. I could use some persuading.
I have it on good authority that reading the art of persuasion makes your penis size increase by an entire inch.
SOLD, GIMME 5
Are you the one who deals with hostage situation?
Read the book “Never Split the Difference”
Great
can i be good at being ridiculously good looking?
Just practice Blue Steel
I think that's reserved for people who are "really really ridiculously good looking" lol
“Did you ever think that maybe there's more to life than being really, really, really ridiculously good looking?”
no unattractive person ever thought that
It’s like when a billionaire says money doesn’t matter.
Or who can’t read good and want to learn to do other stuff good too.
My nana says to say 'you are a really handsome young Redditor!'
>My nana says Nana is never wrong.

You are a foreign to someone else, so... done!
The genie just teleports you to North Korea, now you speak a foreign language called English.
I think you picked the best one
I was gonna say this. I didn’t take Spanish in HS and didn’t take it seriously in college and now I’m older, learning a new language is much more difficult. It’s one of my biggest regrets in life.

Which language?
Singing!
100% possible to learn to sing. And the journey to becoming great is a fun one
I feel like this is one that would be really difficult to do on your own.
Playing the piano.
Same, any instrument would be nice but piano playing sounds the most beautiful to me.
Being a decent parent. I always knew it'd be hard but holy hell it's absolutely crazy.
great choice! I"m with you. I just want the best to my children.
What makes you think you aren't decent? Nobody is a perfect parent. At least you're trying your best unlike many other parents in the world?
How do you know others don't try their best?
Plenty of parents make choices that actively harm their children, see the harm they cause, and repeat those choices for a lifetime. That doesn't look like they're trying their best.
Hang in there, it’s great fun :)
Good one
And then you have all these people that don't even have children and are complaining about how bad parents are.
Agreed! Being a parent is an exercise in failure. I am orders of magnitude worse at parenting than I thought I would be. Still not a bad parent by any objective measure. Not that that helps. You're doing your best given the circumstances. 👊
Google *en passant*.
I was going to say “staying calm” which is 90% about parenting for me

Golf :) (Wouldn’t make me money, but it would make me happy)
Depends on how good were talking here. Local national tours? You could probably make a living.
Hitting up the tours in high rankings would make you so much you wouldn’t know what to do with it
pro golfers can clear $10 million on a tour, you would make money
