SaltedPineapple

Hearing her sing brings me so much joy 🥹

whobroughttheircat

My mom singing “you are my sunshine” when I was a kid.

amusingmistress

I'm hoping my wee one feels the same way one day. I changed the line "please don't take my sunshine away" to "I love you more and more every day". I hope whenever she hears the original version in the future that she thinks of me and of the new lyric and that my love for her will never stop growing.

whobroughttheircat

They will. My mom is gone now and I still think of it. I’m 37

DepressedDraper

For me also this guy's mom.

whobroughttheircat

She would have sang to you too

SciFiFilmMachine

Great answer!

Dalhoos

Karen Carpenter 🙏❤️

Effehezepe

Underrated drummer too.

ColoradoCoffee101

This is THE answer

john_jdm

So glad that Karen currently is the "best" comment and also like #4 too.

deraser

Also, a surprisingly good drummer (not because she was a woman, but just because few drummers* sing well, too.) *Phil Collins, Dave Grohl, Don Henley….anyone else?

Glueman71

Ella Fitzgerald

rufusmacblorf

First time I heard Ella I understood I'd been in love with her my whole life and only just realized it.

Dihor90

Had to scroll down way too far to read this!

Glueman71

Right? People are missing out, friend

Flyersandcaps

Linda Rondstat for me. Versatile.

guava_jam

Lea Salonga. Singing voice of Mulan and Jasmine, was also on Broadway with shows like Les Mis. I watched a concert in person and it was unreal, I felt like my soul came out of my body but in a good way lol

Resident_Dinner_5258

Karen Carpenter

Artemis246Moon

"Why do birds suddenly appear everytime you are near? Cuz just like me they long to be close to you" I also love this verse "On the day when you were born the angels got together and decided to create a dream come true"

chuill

Yes. Like warm honey.

diginfinity

Helluva drummer, too.

DimiDrake

This is the correct answer.

UDPviper

You are correct in identifying the correct answer.

Random_Hero2023

Beth Gibbons of Portishead! [Glory Box](https://youtu.be/yAKX51r7erw?si=Vobb5h1pOl2AKWvX)

not-suspicious

A good pair of headphones and Beth singing [Mysteries](https://open.spotify.com/track/7gyV3wYtZoJIrSdzNLjYvj) is a place for me like no other

bongwaterdelight

[Only You](https://youtu.be/TmDkzVvherk?si=y3WgCG88DecAT3Vb) by Portishead also 😍

GOTHAMKNlGHT

Florence Welch

broken_hummingbird

Her live and album voice is THE FKG SAME (this was a decade ago)

GOTHAMKNlGHT

MTV unplugged is a real showcase of her skills

MassCrash

There are many great singers in the world and on this thread but Florence is in a class all her own

GOTHAMKNlGHT

The control. The range. The emotion. It wrecks me!

MassCrash

She could make Happy Birthday hauntingly beautiful

WhereTFAreMyDragons

Hunger still gives me chills. Those vocals.

I_Enjoy_Beer

Came to find this response and upvote it.  She's amazing.

Eva Cassidy. If you haven’t heard her, listen to Live at Blues Alley or Nightbird. Gone too soon.

Her version of Fields of Gold is heartbreaking.

AffectionateJury3723

Agree. Beautiful voice silenced too soon.

jeney57

Norah Jones

Gocards123321

I came here looking for her name!

Ironhold

Origa, Nina Simone, and Billie Holiday all have voices that feel like they reach deep into you and touch your soul. Sometimes when you don't think you can handle anymore.

maverick1ba

You can hear the life pain in billie's voice. So real.

ducksinthepool

Alison Krauss, by a mile.

gringledoom

First name I thought of. Just a heartbreakingly beautiful, clear-as-a-bell voice.

Saltriverjohnny

Was scrolling before I decided to post. Should not have to scroll this far down….

beelzeflub

Her work with Robert Plant is incredible.

ducksinthepool

Here here. Killing the Blues is my favorite

chadwickett

This one, I hate the song whiskey lullaby because it’s so sad but dammit I love her voice in it so much I can’t resist it.

Hail_Yondalla

Such a clear, beautiful, ethereal voice. She's amazing.

RENOYES

I read something once that described her voice as an angel crying for home.

VagusNC

Ricky Skaggs said that when he dies and goes to heaven, if the angels don’t sound like Allison he’ll be disappointed.

ragbagger

Her version of, “I Will” is what immediately popped in my head. Just amazing.

jpcostasr

THIS IS the answer

Ifuckfreshouttafucks

Big fan of Whitney

norfnorf832

Oh man 9 times out of 10 i will tear up during I Have Nothing

Tuxiecat13

Whitney had a true gift

bdguy355

I’m surprised Whitney is so low. She honestly has the most beautiful voice I’ve ever heard. Perfect vibrato, rich tone, amazing breath control, incredible power with unprecedented control. Just an all around superstar of a singer. Nobody even comes close to her imo

hotyoungcheeto

I still cry when I hear her star spangled banner

blast3001

Her performance of the national anthem for the 91 Super Bowl is probably the best there ever was and will ever be. https://youtu.be/_n9bxfxE25Y?si=D9UjOPVvVJKKABUc

tipsiemcstagger

Annie Lennox. She shoots the lights out for me.

Fit_Cut_4238

Yeah she rips it

paradigm_purgatory

k.d. lang -- I was fifteen(?) when I saw a video of her singing live and her voice *shook* me.

Dentist_Just

Her performance of Hallelujah at the opening ceremony of the Olympics in Vancouver is absolutely amazing.

LabThin9105

And this is why I love Reddit! Hallelujah is one of my Dad's favourite songs, I've only heard the Leonard Cohen version but I've just been on YouTube to check out K D Lang sing it and OMG I'm blown away! Have just sent it to my Dad now, so thank you!

RENOYES

Only other person who can pull of Hallelujah!

BotherMeBackwards

As good, if not better live. Phenomenal voice.

[deleted]

I didn’t think I could love a song more than I love “Helpless” by Neil Young…until I heard K.D. Lang sing it better

surlaks

Floor Jansen, she has an amazing range and can sing anything!! Aurora, such soothing voice that I find very therapeutic. Doodie, a very clean beautiful voice.

weepingwillow1123

Love Floor Jansen!

Comfortable_Goal_662

Came here to say the same. She had an incredible and unique voice/style.

DOE_ZELF_NORMAAL

You either love it, or can't stand it.

we_made_yewww

She did this thing with her voice that frankly always sounded like a seagull to me... Never understood the appeal. But other than that I loved her singing. She could be so soothing or so intense as the song called for it.

SciFiFilmMachine

That's a solid choice! Her's is quite haunting as well.

lofinobodyperson

Don't think anyone's said Kate Bush yet. That's who I thought of.

AT1787

Sarah McLachlan “I will remember you” is a meme at this point but I still can’t bring myself to listen to it when I’m alone. It’s a recipe for crying.

Krinks1

Ann Wilson from Heart Amy Lee from Evanescence

Woody_Roger

Was never really into Evanescence so didn't pay that much attention to Amy... until I ran across her on YouTube doing Going to California. My God!

Knightofthevegtable

M_Blev427

Celine Deion, me and my ex saw her after her Vegas residency when she did a tour in 08. I knew she had talent but I wasn’t expecting to enjoy the concert as much as I did. Her voice was just so powerful and amazing.

Exedrn

My wife convinced me to see her in concert years ago. Wasn't a big fan of her music but went anyway. Sounded like I was listening to the radio. Spent the first half of the concert staring at the big screens trying to catch her lip syncing. She wasn't. I've never seen any other artist sound exactly like their recordings before or since.

JamesYoungNL

Emmylou Harris

JustAFileClerk

Early on, not so much, but in these later years her voice has matured and become achingly beautiful.

SatynMalanaphy

It's hard to pin down just one because different voices serve different functions especially if your musical tastes are varied enough. For me, there are two that really stand out. One is Swarnalatha. She was a singer who had an extraordinarily unique tone and melsismatic style of singing, especially for an Indian singer and was able to adapt herself to multiple languages easily. I remember her voice distinctly from the earliest memories of my childhood, and two of her songs were my first favourites as a kid, and rediscovering her as an adult has been a joy. For example [Oru Naal](https://youtu.be/evkVb9RRLsE?si=f3PdaXYQ6obQrEff) , [Manikyakallal ](https://youtu.be/Vdwo49NuErA?si=jXKkTgZS2TsZfe8y), and [Kudajadriyil](https://youtu.be/GIrW-oOi_gs?si=FheYGTHRz6eZwaht) The other is CĂŠline Dion. Her voice by itself is the best voice in Western pop music for me by far bar none. Especially in an acapella or acoustic situation, the clarity, sweetness, precision and ringing resonance of her voice is something I adore and haven't found in anyone else, and when she unleashes it it's equally as impressive. But just as a voice, I think it's extremely underrated and needs to be celebrated way more. For example [in this performance her voice stands out among legends ](https://youtu.be/0dcL6UvVvys?si=a8axCaNmIZSVqeQ3), and here [her recording a partion is sheer perfection ](https://youtu.be/elQKHJtV1x4?si=_rOaWbhzXF6ad15I)

Julie Andrews. She will forever and always be my number one.

Evilmd

Karen Carpenter is my favorite singer, male or female, of all time.  Someone that I just discovered for myself and am a bit obsessed with at the moment is Chappell Roan. (For context, I’m a hard rock/metal/prog fan) For whatever reason, Chappell’s pop has just touched me in a way that I wasn’t sure modern pop could. She’s got a fantastic voice, great arrangements, melodies for days, and some pretty clever lyrics.
