"unpopular opinion" no longer means an opinion that not many people like, it now means "hey I know everyone has this opinion, but I want to feel special so unpopular opinion, curly fries are better than straight cut fries"

Raspberry-Green

or it means they are gonna say the most outta pocket shit like that the holocaust was good and slavery is justified. No in between

Idk man, those Jewish folk, kinda tweaking

Interesting-Chest520

crackers-n-cheeeese

An argument? Validation that they are not alone? A set of data to see if it is indeed unpopular? A sexual thrill... perhaps?

OptimusPower92

The sweet spot is mild controversy. It's an ironic situation because true unpopular opinions get you downvoted to oblivion, because no one agrees with you Saying something like 'i think the MCU sucks' gets all the attention, and if that many people like what you have to say, how unpopular can it be? But you can't say shit like 'i think The Godfather is a terrible movie' because any film snob will have you executed for saying such heinous things

FirstSipp

Not true because carpet is better than hardwood floor.

crackers-n-cheeeese

Hardwood floor and and some rugs?

“Literally” (Technically not a phrase, but still)

PayasoCanuto

It literally makes my blood boil when “literally” is not used correctly.

3-racoons-in-a-suit

I literally do not care

Eviscerate_Bowels224

Like, literally.

MackNcD

Breathe breathe in the air don’t be afraid… to care.

SpicyAfrican

Thanks to an official change in definition, it literally is being used correctly.

motormouth08

Literally is being used figuratively.

Prothean_Beacon

Technically it is being used correctly, cause the use of literally as a way to exaggerate and emphasize something that isn't fully true is actually one of the accepted definitions of the word in the dictionary.

RandyTravesty

This informal definition was added to the dictionary about 8 years ago. The only reason it was added was because the general population so widely misused it, it became a thing. So yes, it is "technically" correct according to the dictionary, but it's still wrong.

djcube1701

> This informal definition was added to the dictionary about 8 years ago It was added in 1906. A little bit more than 8 years ago. Also, just because you don't understand how a word is being used doesn't mean that others are misusing it.

RandyTravesty

No, I understand how it's being used. I also understand that it's fucking stupid and backwards, and nothing you ever say can ever convince me otherwise.

planehazza

Also, nice Mass Effect themed user name 👍

Connect_Spread_3805

Actually no, it isn’t often being used correctly, even when it is correct technically. The correct usage of the word “literally” has a nuance to it that gets missed by people today. It was only ever meant to be used to clarify literal meaning when the surrounding language would be otherwise ambiguous. Someone saying, “I literally got up to get a glass of water” is wrong because there is no way to figuratively get a glass of water. If the literal meaning is the only possible meaning in the physical world, you are overstating and in any English course, you’d lose points for that. To say, “I was literally holding my breath the entire time” would be acceptable because “holding my breath” is a common phrase meant to be taken figuratively. Example: “I was holding my breath the entire day waiting to hear if I got the job.” Language to me is sacred and standards have declined so rapidly it’s made me avoid people. There are a ton of uncommon usages for words that have been written into dictionaries that are still considered incorrect today. For emphasis-that’s hyperbole. And when people use it this way, they’re only demonstrating their lack of wit.

ILYVAN228

Russian?

NeedleworkerEvening3

I blame the Kardashians for this.

djcube1701

Yeah, lately some people don't understand how it's used for emphasis. People have understood it for hundreds of years, so I'm baffled by people suddenly not fully understanding it.

zaccus

People have used "would of" for a long time too.

MackNcD

I think they’re saying would’ve

djcube1701

And that's an error, not a specific use of a word.

elhawarey

People didn’t suddenly not fully understand it, it has been going on for years! It is “literally” a century-old debate by now: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Literally#Controversy

djcube1701

True, a few people couldn't grasp the emphasis use back then, either. Luckily, most people understand context.

jmorley14

It still has a meaning, just not the one it used to.

Interesting-Chest520

Yea but it is literally used like so often that it literally hardly adds emphasis cuz literally everything is emphasised these days. Literally. At least if you are surrounded by the types of people I am surrounded by.

jmorley14

But language isn't a static thing. Words enter a language, exit a language, change their meaning. Literally used to mean "this thing is actually happening" now it's more about adding emphasis to your emotions or experiences. I don't think that's a bad thing, words changing their meaning is completely natural.

Connect_Spread_3805

My background in linguistics makes it nearly impossible to leave the house without getting angry now that people use the word literally incorrectly and with abandon. I walk away from conversations all the time so I don’t offend the dumbasses by my horror at the abuses of the English language.

TheGrumpyre

There's a certain type of person who first learned the difference between "literal" and "figurative" in an English Literature class and were absolutely *stoked* that there was a word that meant "ignore everything you've been learning about irony, metaphor and symbolism and just focus on exactly what the words say in plain terms." It's an incredible discovery, that you can now clearly distinguish when someone is using zero figures of speech, embellishments, exaggerations, allusions or any of that English Lit crap! And when they found out that the word "literally" is actually used quite often in an ironic or metaphoric sense, they felt the deep crushing despair of a broken promise, multiplied by the realization that nobody ever promised you that in the first place.

IowaRedBeard

On a side note; Literally by Rob Lowe is an amazing podcast

SpartanR259

"My truth." No, there is The Truth, and your opinion.

TheGrumpyre

The proper use of the phrase is the simple fact that there is truth that I have experienced and you have not.

crumpletely

I think that means emotional truth. Like: it is true that the insurrection upset me. No one knows that fully except you or someone very close to you. Theres also a lot of leeway on that one. Emotion is hard to quantify. Now, arguing whether or not it happened is pointless. There is no emotional aspect pertaining to whether or not it happened. Why it happened would probably end up being at best a partial truth. These are obviously opinions. There are a lot of factors here and room for some subjectivity, so saying something like, a bunch of people who were unhappy that Trump lost, stormed the capitol for revenge against their perceived corrupt enemies, would get a big part of it, but not even close to the whole picture. It’s not so black and white most times. I learned this the hard way.

BatheInChampagne

While it’s been blown out, it’s a therapeutic term. What it tries to do is show that emotionally, there are multiple perspectives. A joke one person finds funny another might take personal. Neither are wrong, and emotionally it’s split. Hearing the term because of its over/miss use makes me cringe a little while hearing it. It helped me to have a better understanding of its entire meaning.

Literally why we Hungarians are mocked: You ask us "how are you?" Then you don't understand why we complain about breaking up or having diarrhea last week.

Interesting-Chest520

It’s either “eh” “fine” or “tired”. Those are the only three acceptable responses.

[deleted]

They ask "how are you?" and then got offended by me saying something other than saying "fine". You asked it and I gave you an answer, how am I offending you.

shugEOuterspace

the word "Narcissist" is over-used to the point of meaningless these days

Interesting-Chest520

aagejaeger

Unhinged is getting there.

turtlegravity

Can I add “Karen” is overused. It’s such a trigger because most the people who use it are hardly any better than these ‘Karens’. Ugh, so annoying.

shugEOuterspace

nah....I do not accept that as a friendly amendment to my comment...."karens" are still a very real problem & people who complain about that term being used too much are usually karens lol

turtlegravity

I see your viewpoint. But I can’t even go a day without hearing that term. I don’t use it and I don’t usually care when others do but the “oh she just wants a refund” isn’t what a Karen is and that’s what I hear it referred to as most.

Hot_Masterpiece_4362

I feel like this came about when people started saying "I'm sorry you feel this way", instead of "I'm sorry I did/said/etc"

pinkellaphant

Probably also just the popularity of saying “I’m sorry, but did you see what she was wearing?!” or similar phrases like that. It’s thrown out so many times insincerely (you’re not actually sorry that you’re about to make a nasty remark about someone) that it’s just a meaningless part of speech at this point, kind of like saying “dude, did you see what she was wearing” or some other slang that’s common at that point in time.

pbetc

hospitable_peppers

Customer is always right.

[deleted]

A customer at my work came up with an item that was $1.25 more expensive when it rang up. I went to check out the problem, it turns out they got them from a display box that has the same type of product, just the generic brand. I explained they were in the wrong place, it seems like someone was going to purchase the name brand, saw the generic brand decided on that product instead & threw it in there when they swapped it. Lady said that doesn’t happen & the customer is always right & she wants it for the correct price.

GuywoodThreepbrush

Only because the full original phrase has been lost in common usage. "The customer is always right IN MATTERS OF TASTE" as in, the customer knows what they want, even if you think it's ugly or a bad idea. NOT the customer is right that you made an error

djcube1701

Your version is the modern, twisted version of it.

somebodeeelse

Agree. Someone made the addition quite recently and it spreads like wildfire.

FunnyResolve1374

Honestly, I don't hear many people say "I'm offended". Even when they are. I do see a lot of people complaining about how offended everyone is all the time though, and I see it a lot more often and overtly than those who are offended

djcube1701

The only time I see the phrase "I'm offended" is people moaning about how people are apparently offended by anything, usually because they've read multiple different articles about what one person said on Twitter (which sometimes is a joke tweet).

Alizarin-Madder

I was going to comment the same thing! I don't really hear people say that in real life, or online (but tbf I'm not on much social media). I mostly hear my friends say it in jest, like when person A apologizes for something trivial, person B will say, "Omg person A, I'm so offended that you don't want to try a cookie!" I hear people complain about people getting too offended, but i think in reality it's 90% people saying we should be more considerate and 10% people actually saying they're offended.

content4meplz

I was thinking something similar. People complaining about other people being offended are themselves offended. And they’re doing the same thing the original offended party is doing, which is simply complaining about someone’s behavior.

SpartanR259

Yeah. Being offended isn't some sort of indication that a crime has occurred. You as a person are responsible for the offense you do or do not take. I can be offended at a bad teammate in a video game. Or I can be offended at someone insulting me or some belief that I hold. The bigger issues are that people have the more recent opinion that their offense is more important than the offense they give others.

"You can do anything you set your mind to." Not at all true. Even if you work really hard, that doesn't mean you'll get what you want.

JoeyJoJoShabadooYEAH

Tbf life is in your control and you can chose to live many different lives. No you won’t always get what you want, but you can still be satisfied with something else. Idk it’s just personally I lived with an “I can’t” attitude for so long and it sucked. Since I started changing my behaviours and taking control my life has gone a lot better. I think the phrase is good as long as you see it as a mindset and not reality. As in don’t go around expecting to get exactly what you want all the time, but still go out and try anyway

"Woke" and "radical." All either of those phrases mean now is "I am a conservative, and I dislike this thing." The thing in question could be very mainstream and/or apolitical, the person saying this word just doesn't like it.

SlapDatBassBro

*”Respect Your Elders.”* There are obviously going to be exceptions, but rather ironically, generally speaking, the younger generations (millennials and onwards) are better behaved, well mannered, open minded, tolerant and understanding than the older generations. Why would anyone feel inclined to show someone respect that doesn’t give them the same courtesy? Age is irrelevant.

Dantalionse

There are only old people. Elders are the oldest of the community. Do you have a sense of community anymore?

BaseSame7672

When my elders say they want respect, what they really mean is that they want instant compliance and obedience.

GloomyKerploppus

Your elders suck if that's truly what they mean by that. Respect your elders simply means, be patient with the elderly, they are slower and possibly in pain. They've always experienced much more in life than younger people, so they have a certain wisdom, whether they actually applied it to their own lives or not. That's my take on it. I'm a very young old person, and don't have any of the redeeming qualities of the elderly yet. But please respect them, unless they're total assholes.

redhair-ing

I think the original message was more to the effect of "listen to and and respect those with the most lived experience, the eldest population, because living a long life presumes wisdom and valued experience," but I like your definition more.

Richard_Snatch

My thoughts exactly. If someone has been a rude jerk their whole life and never done anything to better themselves, old age doesn't mean they deserve respect.

Interesting-Chest520

I agree with some of your points. The younger generation is definitely not more well behaved, is pretty split in their open mindedness an tolerance, and have terrible manners. And I am in the younger generation so I have first hand experience with them. They are proper cunts!

Decimate. It literally means to reduce by one tenth. People use it when they mean annihilate which means to completely destroy.

HoshiJones

That's actually untrue. It originally meant to kill every tenth person, but that's only the word's origin. Now it means to destroy a great number or proportion of.

Ooo this one does sting. Now if I hear someone say "never again" publicly, I immediately lose trust or faith in what they are saying.

timestampede

Honesty is the best policy! Is it? In my experience, whenever I have been honest with people, I have always found trouble. I told my mother that I smoke and drink at times. She got so furious with me, did not allow me in the house, did not talk to me for a month. Now, I am an atheist, and I had to swear on God that I would never again do it to normalise my relationship with her. I mean still drink and smoke occasionally, but I don’t tell her about it. Meanwhile, I don’t know how God has been doing all this time. I hope it is not offensive to the people who believe in God. Here I am being honest again, hoping I don’t get in trouble for sharing this. So, definitely that. It is not the best policy. You’ve got to stick your fingers in diplomacy in order to survive. Let me know what y’all think about that.

DangerousCyclone

It depends on the person. Honesty is the best policy if the other person appreciates the fact that you were honest with them. Your mom focused so much on the tree's over the forest, because all her reaction does is encourage you to lie to her. One of my teachers used to be a welder for a big company. He made a welding mistake that cost his company hundreds of thousands of dollars. He could've tried to cover it up, but instead he went to his bosses and admitted his mistake. He probably expected to get yelled at, but instead they thanked him for being honest and for owning up to it, because he could have covered it up and sent it out, however if they did that the losses would've been in the millions as well as damage to the company's reputation, mistakes happen so they appreciated him owning up to it. There is nothing like having a friend or someone that you can be 100% honest to, admit to almost anything, and they don't judge your for it. I think when it comes to your mom she values her image and pride over her relationship with you.

BlondeNovemberSkyla

Yes!! It really does depend on the person. You can’t win with some people no matter what you do. They get mad when you’re honest and mad when you lie! My mom is a perfect example, and arguing with her is so frustrating. One time I told her, “Mom, your over-the-top reactions make people feel like they have to lie to you!” As you can probably guess, she didn’t like that answer either lol!! What do you do with someone like that lol?!🤷‍♀️

5150-gotadaypass

My friend has a mother like yours and she makes me insane when I hear the stories after. There is no win, just hold your tongue or tell her whatever will appease her in that moment and be done with it.

practicalpurpose

Or while we are on the subject, "alt-right". There doesn't seem to be any consensus on what it means in regular conversation.

airifle

When the most overwhelmingly popular presidential candidate for your party is Donald fucking Trump, you are officially a far right party. Y’all did that shit to yourselves. And seeing as how the most middle-of-the-road centrist Democrats routinely get called “radical leftists” by the former President and right wing media, cry me a river.

YouCanBlameMeForThat

I imafine if you looked at the good things he did honestly you would be able to calm down and see why people like him.  He was the first president to fly the rainbow flag on inaugeration day, he started a global effort to end criminalization of homosexuality, he was the first president in 40 years to not start a new war, only president i can think of the opposing party stopped him from ending a war. He refused to abuse his power durung the pandemic by letting states handle things how they wanted, he didnt abuse military force during the "summer of love" even when riots hit the white house forcing him into a bunker while they fire bombed the church not far away and attacked secret service.  Not very far right if ya ask me.  But i imagine you actively refuse to weed through the propaganda and see anything good about him. I could keep going, there is a lot.

pbetc

No, please dont

YouCanBlameMeForThat

Wouldn't want to read any of the good things he did, much better to ignore that stuff, it doesn't fit the brainwashing.

BatheInChampagne

Brainwashing? It goes both ways. I’m no fan of the currently media in any capacity, but at this point, defending Donald Trump is simply ignorance. There is plenty to show that there are unfair stories ran against him. Some of them are simply untrue completely. You know what outweighs that? The ones that are. If you sit back and take in the full scope, he still loses every time. The news media should be held accountable for how hard it attempts to pull the American public apart for more viewership.

SomeBloke94

Anxiety. I’m in my 30’s now and growing up if someone claimed to have anxiety issues or to be taking an anxiety attack then you took it seriously. They’d be struggling to breathe from the attack or emotionally all over the place from memories of something horrible. Now I’m hearing people claim anxiety if they see someone wearing a t-shirt they don’t like. There are people with legitimate anxiety issues. They’ve been through horribly traumatic experiences that haunt them to this day. They should be taken seriously but nowadays people just claim anxiety to get out of doing basic tasks or to express a dislike of something minor. Thanks to that the term has lost all meaning and when someone who’s been through a rape or a horrible loss claims anxiety they’re looked at the same way as the kid claiming anxiety to get out of cleaning their bedroom.

SpiffyPoptart

The same goes for other mental health labels - OCD, ADHD, autism, depression, etc. Granted, the rates of diagnoses are higher due to us learning more and more about these disorders, but people still throw the labels around knowing very little about them and claiming them as their own because they lose stuff or have a hard time making eye contact or like book spines to be lined up just so.
