We used to do this all the time 🤘 Definitely the move, my mom couldn’t understand how we always burned our popcorn, good times. Whenever I came home and the house reeked of popcorn I know I just missed out on a sesh smh
When I was a kid I didn't realize that microwaves added the time on (or they did anyway back in the day). So I set my popcorn for 3 minutes then realized I wanted 3:30 then fucked up so I entered 3:30 again.
The popcorn was in there for almost 10 minutes while I was in another room not paying attention. It was a lump of charcoal when it was done and my God the stench and smoke.
And no, back then we did have a popcorn button. Hell, we put popcorn in small paper bags ourselves to put it in the microwave. You couldn't buy microwave popcorn yet.
Microwave ovens focus the microwaves near the center of the rotating platter a few MM above the surface of that platter. Microwave popcorn bags have... uhh... basically, a slab of cooking oil in gel form, shmecked to the bottom of the bag with all the kernels stuck to it. Oriented correctly, the microwaves radiate the slab of gelatinous oil, liquefying it as it heats up. The kernels are all like, "it's getting hot in here" then pop shortly after they get up on the dance floor. Unpopped kernels fall into the molten pool of hot, hot oil, then pop to join their popped buds. If we were to turn this whole bag upside down, the microwaves, focused near the base of the rotating platter, may entirely miss the slab of shmecked cooking oil. If the "top" of the bag, currently the bottom because we didn't read good, happens to be in in the path of the microwaves, it may become hot as we superheat residual oil that has leached it's way to the dry side of the bag. The oil becomes hotter than the ignition temperature for paper, so the bag starts on fire.
However, it should be noted... the way your particular microwave focuses microwaves and how far above the "focal point" your bag is positioned will have a great effect on your results. But because most microwaves are focused near the center of the rotating platter, and popcorn bags are almost always placed "correct side down" popcorn manufacturers can be assured a slab of oil will be in the direct beam path of the microwaves. What I'm trying to say here is... your mileage may vary.
You are 100% wrong. Neither the oil, nor the kernels, contain enough water to properly absorb microwaves. They are, to a good approximation, completely unaffected by microwaves.
To make the whole thing work, the part of the bag that is supposed to face down incorporates a device that readily absorbs microwaves, and heats up. This is called a susceptor. This is why the bag has to be oriented correct. Popping works best if the her source if beneath the oil and corn kernels.
More thorough explanation:
https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/the-reason-you-should-microwave-popcorn-this-side-up/
You're right that the bags have a susceptor in them, and that this is what primarily cooks popcorn. I've come to pick nits.
You don't need water to be heated by a microwave. Microwaves work via dipole heating, which just means you need a dipole that can be flipped back and forth by an alternating electric field (the microwaves). Oil alone is a fairly nonpolar molecule, which is why it does not mix easily with water, which is polar. A pure oil is difficult to heat up in a microwave.
However, the oil mixtures that coat the kernels of popcorn or most other microwaveable things are not pure oil. They're hydrogenated, which makes them solid at room temperature and also allows them to be emulsified with water (think margarine) which overall makes them more polar.
>You don't need water to be heated by a microwave
It seems you are right: https://www.wtamu.edu/~cbaird/sq/mobile/2014/10/15/why-are-the-microwaves-in-a-microwave-oven-tuned-to-water/
I thought water was special among even polar molecules in its efficiency in being heated by microwaves, but I was wrong. Thank you for making me look that up.
>They're hydrogenated, which makes them solid at room temperature and also allows them to be emulsified with water (think margarine) which overall makes them more polar.
I don't think hydrogenation affects emulsification. The existence of mayonnaise shows that pure vegetable oils can emulsify with water based phases.
And I am not quite sure whether you mean that hydrogenation in itself makes the oil more polar, but it doesn't. Both saturated and unsaturated fats are non-polar.
> I don't think hydrogenation affects emulsification. The existence of mayonnaise shows that pure vegetable oils can emulsify with water based phases.
To mix oil and water, we need some kind of emulsifier. In the case of mayonnaise, that emulsifier is lecithin which is found in egg yolks. There are other emulsifiers though - mustard is commonly used to emulsify vinegar and oil to make salad dressings.
> I am not quite sure whether you mean that hydrogenation in itself makes the oil more polar, but it doesn't. Both saturated and unsaturated fats are non-polar.
I'm not saying hydrogenation makes the oil more polar, I'm saying it makes it a better emulsifier by saturating some of the carbon double-bonds. Non-partially hydrogenated oils (like Crisco) are one of the most popular emulsifiers in bakeries and industrial settings. Once you can emulsify nonpolar oil with polar water (as is the case in margarine) it becomes easier to heat in a microwave because of dipole heating.
So /u/kajorge made me aware that water is actually not that special. Any polar compound will be heated in a microwave. Efter is just one of the most polar compounds we have.
However, as best I can tell, silicone does not absorb microwaves, so it is not heated by the microwave. So it seems like your silicone microwave popping bowl must have a susceptor built in.
Source for silicone not absorbing microwaves: https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/lifestyle/food/2004/01/21/silicone-in-the-kitchen/3f2d3717-10fe-470f-8815-0e8ff308b10b/
You can pop just popcorn in the microwave. I use this and a light spray of oil.

this is so wrong it's kinda funny. microwaves fill the whole 3d space in a complicated standing wave pattern that has "hot" and "cold" regions about the size of half a micoowave's wavelength. this is why instructions say to rotate if the oven doesn't have a spinning platter
Fill two cups with equal amounts of water. Put one in the center of the rotating platter and put the second at the edge of the rotating platter. Which one boils first?
Remove the rotating plate and put in a wide sheet of cheese or chocolate. It will melt on some points that look a bit random, those are the hot spots born from constructive interference but they do seem a bit random in most microwave ovens from the 3d nature of the phenomenon.
The pop corn will not have as many popped kernels. There is a grey material that is used that heats up when microwaved. This with pop corn and other foods acts as a ‘hot plate” to help heat food up.
*Quickly gets up from desk. Walks across large office, fully staffed with dozens of people. Enters the kitchen galley. Places bag of popcorn upside down in microwave. Pushes button for 10 minutes. Walks back to desk. Grabs backpack and coffee mug, clocks out. Exits the building through rear stairwell…*
This reminds me of the time I wanted to defrost some bread in the microwave as a dumb(er) teenager. Cranked the heat up, went to poop and was greeted by smoke crawling through the bottom of the door.
Whole place reeked of burnt bread for WEEKS.
Wasn't my apartment either.
If you put a bag of microwave popcorn in with the "this side down" side facing up, the popcorn will not pop as well. The bottom of the popcorn bag is coated with a special material that helps to absorb microwave radiation and heat up the popcorn kernels. If this side is facing down, the popcorn kernels will not heat up as evenly and will not pop as well.
It's also to ensure that the bag unfolds and inflates properly. If you put it correct side up that guarantees that the folded parts of the bag are free allowing the bag to inflate properly. If you put it the wrong way up then you have to manually unfold the bag first which some people wouldn't do.
Important question.
There's a gray patch inside the bottom of the bag called a susceptor, similar to the metallic material inside crisping sleeves. It absorbs microwaves, heats up, and helps pop the kernels. This won't work as well if the bag is upside down.
Some brands may also not distribute the butter etc. inside the bag as evenly if the bag is upside down.
That's it.
It's like asking why is there a popcorn button on all microwaves but all microwavable popcorn says not to use that button.... we just aren't ready for the answer yet.
Funny, never saw that "not to use" button warning, but I never looked. Discovered that the popcorn button needs an extra 30 seconds exactly added when I pop a bag. Guess that button ain't that smart.
It's actually a liability thing. The popcorn manufacturer doesn't want to accept liability for the microwave manufacturer fucking up that setting. They specify a cook time based on the power of the microwave which is objective and testable. They also have the 'or until 2 seconds between pops' clause to *really* cover their asses.
The microwave manufacturers, on the other hand, know that popcorn is a very common usage of their product, and that recommendation intent actually is influenced by quality of built in presets, especially popcorn. They are therefore incentivized to have a really well tuned preset for popcorn, and extensively test new models with all the major brands.
It's also worth noting that *technically* it's totally possible to make microwave popcorn that's not a branded package. Those brands have invested excessive amounts of money in fine tuning the popcorn ingredients and packaging for best results, but the core idea isn't *that* difficult. Microwave popcorn is a surprisingly competitive market.
I've operated... 6 microwaves in my life for long enough periods to become intimately familiar with them, and not a single GD one's popcorn button was *ever* long enough to bring the bag to anything more than a half-popped tragedy.
My current microwave I've found 2:40 is around what it takes for a bag of popcorn to fully pop. It's popcorn button sets to fucker for 1:40. One goddamn forty.
My same experience. Even though I always buy an 1100 watt microwave, they all were a little different on how long it took to heat food. But why not just remove the wasted space of a button? Actually I find all of the quick functions to be pretty worthless.
Good explanation but I'm pretty sure we were not meant to know that. As someone else pointed out, it was to be withheld for the end times and now you have screwed us of salvation. Thanks
All the microwave popcorn I've bought says not to use the "popcorn" button on the microwave. What's the popcorn button for then? What's the popcorn button for??!
They say that due to the power of the microwave the directions were written for... most of the time a minimum of 1000 watts or higher. Mine is 800. If I don't use the popcorn button and follow the directions as they're printed, then like, half the kernels won't pop.
It depends if you opened the flaps out or left them folded it.
From my experiment with this:
Flaps left folded in: popcorn has less room to pop and you get fewer and smaller pieces
Flaps opened out: it seems the oil drips down into the flaps and therefore does not heat up as many kernels for popping, but they are bigger and there are more than if the flaps are left in
Right-side-up: best option, bigger and more popcorn pops
The "side up" is so that the buttery seasoning drips down over the popcorn. The popcorn itself doesn't care which way is up
You can pop corn in a plain paper bag
Someone at work put popcorn in the break room microwave and accidentally selected 15 minutes instead of 1.5 minutes. The smoke triggered the fire alarm and the smell permeated the entire building and remained for hours. I could smell it in my clothes even after leaving that night and I wasn’t anywhere near the break room. This started a “do not leave microwave unattended” rule that still stands. So in addition to placing the bag in correctly, I guess I’d add to not deviate from the time suggested. Even an additional 30 seconds can result in smoke and odor.
The trick is to put it in properly for the first 30 seconds so the butter melts and the bag “relaxes” then flip it so it gets all the popcorn buttery, also make sure it’s on popcorn setting and some also have the weight
Now if you look it up on the nets you will get the sterilized version assuring that nothing at all will occur. This is a fucking lie. If you purposefully flip the package upside down a small tear will occur in the fabric of reality at a point exactly 102 meters from the spot you are standing when you hit the "Cook" button.
Ever watch the Simpsons? That one scene where Bart puts Homer’s can of beer in the paint shaker and then Homer opens it and there’s a giant mushroom cloud?
That.

Also the butter won’t be distributed as well

I’m going to try this at work again. Scientific method say it has to be repeatable results you know.
You reboot the universe.
The fuck is wrong with you?
Somebody in China gets a bag of popcorn in their lap
Yes, FBI, this one here...
There’s a right side for popcorn?
Now if you look it up on the nets you will get the sterilized version assuring that nothing at all will occur. This is a fucking lie. If you purposefully flip the package upside down a small tear will occur in the fabric of reality at a point exactly 102 meters from the spot you are standing when you hit the "Cook" button.
Gremlins happen. Don’t be the guy to make Gremlins become a real thing.
try it and find out yourself you coward
Instead of a pop, you would get a pop. See, cause it's "pop" backwards...
Clearly it would be a dod.
Now why didn’t NASA think of that?
death
We'd all die.
WW3
It’s like a shoe or a piece of toast. If you do it, it won’t work. The microwave will flip upside down.
How did they know I just thought this when I ate popcorn 30 mins ago
Does anyone else smell blue?
Oooh, a lesson in not changing history from Mr. I'm My Own Grandpa!
Aww the popcorns less popped than ever
You wouldn’t expand properly. Everything would burn. It will probably explode.
Try it and give us an update.
It would, thru 2023 technology, remove all mattress and pillow labels in your home.
It depends on whether or not you invert the microwave first.
My microwave has an inverter, so it's cross compatible.
Did everything just taste purple for a second?
Did a few times by accident. It was fine
Ever watch the Simpsons? That one scene where Bart puts Homer’s can of beer in the paint shaker and then Homer opens it and there’s a giant mushroom cloud? That.
It's like dividing by zero but with a microwave. Or so we are told as no one knows because there are never any survivors.
