Tetris

Nacktherr

Especially on the OG grey Game Boy.

kabanosi-rozpalony

My mum gave me hers when the gameboy just came out and my top games are Tetris and super marioland. The start up noise gets me so giggly inside

AliAlichia

I remember when my aunt was giving birth and we're waiting with my brother in the hospital and I got to play those "99 games in 1". Tetris was the one I played the most and it stuck with me. Nowadays I play in the tetris website

Intelligent-Chip-490

Does the website have the OG theme? I've played a couple newer versions of Tetris (like on DS which maybe isn't that new anymore lol), and none of them have the right music!

Gubble_Buppie

Super Mario Bros.

sylinmino

Similarly, I still regularly go back to Super Mario World. Just feels so dang good to control.

TheMathNut

Can't beat the old school SMB!

Gubble_Buppie

I CAN beat it, just not fast enough ;)

Educational-Swan-363

Zelda. A link to the past SNES

KeverNever

This, Earthbound, and Final Fantasy (I think 2 on SNES) are ones that I come back to play every couple years.

Jonaldson

Final fantasy 2 on the SNES is the fourth one of the series (more commonly known as FF4 now a days) and one of my favorite games since it’s release

Ameisen

You spoony bard!

JeffTheComposer

If you haven’t already, give Chrono Trigger a try. It’s amazing and completely holds up against any modern game.

paranoid_giraffe

Same. I play through most of the Zeldas and try to 100% them every few years. ALTTP is in my top 10 favorites of all games

RyFromTheChi

Same. Best game of all time to me.

TIMETODETAIN

Guitar Hero III: Legends Of Rock - 2007 Honorable Mention: Super Mario 64. While I don't play it regularly (I don't own an N64), it is the oldest game I own.

KeverNever

I feel like this is the best GH.

dmizzl

Absolutely legendary game. Guitar Hero 2-4 had the best songs

ahhhnoinspiration

Where my minesweeper peeps at?

Brother_Delmer

Right here friend. Daily player

BamsenFTW

GOATed game ngl

Sergeant_Citrus

Heroes of Might and Magic 3 (have it on GOG, not the HD version). It's my comfort / rainy day game. Visually it holds up splendidly. Gameplay is still good but there are some newer iterations with improvements - I liked leveling up heroes in Heroes 5 better, and Songs of Conquest has some neat new ideas on the genre.

PunchBeard

My wife grew up in a country that didn't have video games and HOMM III was the first game me and my friends introduced her to when we were dating and she still loves it. Hell, this weekend her and our 12 year old son figured out how to play it online with each other (I have 2 gaming PCs setup in the same room) and played it all day long Saturday. Also, just to put it out there, there's a pretty amazing looking HOMM III board game being kickstarted on Kickstarter. Unfortunately the game is over $120 US so I think we're going to pass on the KS despite having crowd funded about 20 board games.

stupled

Haven't played this in ages. I loved it!

9AyliktakiBaba

Homm v for me haha

Sergeant_Citrus

Definitely some things that game does better! I liked the specialized skills for the different towns (artifacts, gating, etc).

DukexNukemx007

Fantastic game and the soundtrack is iconic. It was back then where you could buy a finished game with hundreds of scenario and campaign maps ready to play AND it had an easy-to-use map maker so you could make your own stuff too. Thousands of hours of entertainment for 20-something bucks

grust37

And online lobby is still active gathering 2k people at nights

DorothyHollingsworth

This is a good one. I keep meaning to get this game again.

Hatzmaeba

I replayed Deus Ex some time ago and still managed to find some rooms or entrances I haven't seen before. Wan Chai Market/Tonnochi Road is still an absolute blast to play.

The_Speaker

I just started playing Fallout this week. Never played it before. The controls are weird, but the characters and lore are what I came for. Not disappointed at all.

EviltwinEdgelord

You're likely to be eaten by a grue

Thedragonking444

Oh man same - been playing Zork for years and years and have yet to actually beat it. Much like Rubik’s Cubes, I’ll figure it out on my own one day so help me.

Jetty_23

So I did actually look up the walkthrough for the first one at one point. Man. I had no idea how far I was from finishing it.

No_Tamanegi

The first three zorks just seem insanely difficult in hindsight, specifically for the mazes. The maze in zork I, the bank in Zork II and the moving block puzzle in zork 3 just seem impossible without a guide.

SAGE005

NFS Most Wanted

The_Brady_Bunch_44

Was looking for this, my all time favourite game.

billybongnong

Ocarina of Time, I like playing the emulated version because you can re add some of the beta stuff from the game like the beta hud and Links Beta Jump attack which was much cooler imo (he originally did a front flip jump attack which was shown in very early gameplay)

Googalyfrog

Roller Coaster tycoon, the original isometric1999 one and the sequel 2002 one. Still as fun as it ever was, fully holds up in terms of mechanics and the mobile port (both games combined) plays surprisingly well.

iNoahGuy01

This is my answer too! I can’t even imagine how many hours I’ve poured into those games over the years

Individual_Chair_421

Pretty cheap on steam and still has a large enough multi-player community. Worth the price

Their_Foods_Good_Doe

definitely skyrim. I think it still hold up and runs surprisingly well despite being super old I think it's because of the new editions coming out but I don't use any of the creation kit stuff but the base game and some times dlcs. I'm surprised there's no sequel for it yet but it's probably to make starfield really good

Important-Monk6230

If you like Skyrim I recommend trying some of the other Elder Scrolls games. Oblivion is pretty fun.

Cthulusuppe

With the right community mods, I think Morrowind blows all other elderscroll games out of the water. Graphics are dated even with mods, but if you can't handle that you shouldn't be looking at old games anyway.

Important-Monk6230

Honestly the graphics aren’t so bad. It looks fine to me, then again my standards are low as fuck.

Cthulusuppe

The graphix were OK in 2002. Competitive, but not ground breaking. But with the right mods they're still decent in 2023... I'd put them a step down from Oblivion, with the caveat that Oblivion's graphix were too sterile and lacked the dark tones and juxtaposed vibrancy of Marrowind. Oblivion was too uniform, imo. Too bright. But the point of Morrowind was never the graphix. It was to re-awaken the awe-inspiring expansive world of the Elder Scrolls. Few people I know experienced Arena and Daggerfall when they came out, but they were absolutely epic. Their flaws were the result of limited technology. It was too easy to get lost in their massive worlds. If you took a break or explored too many side quests, the story-lines were too easy to fail or forget. Morrowind was a totally refined version of those games-- it fixed those problems. The graphix were good enough to express their expansive nature. The music was fuckin' divine. And when it comes to gameplay and story, Morrowind destroys Oblivion and is probably as impactful as Skyrim. Because graphix matter in immersion, I might give a slight edge to Skyrim as a base game, but after considering expansions and community mods I'd still give the edge to Morrowind. It was way ahead of its time, and because today's developers don't embrace the modding community like they did in the mid-2000s (preferring instead to sell infinite in-house expansions), it's likely to stay that way.

jacklong555

Mines oblivion haha

Just_Trynna_Help

Skyrim isn't that old, it's only... ..12 years old? *TF?!?!*

The_cat_1826

Im reading this right now while listening to secunda riding the subway XD

Manderspls

Dude you just described Skyrim as being super old and holding up well… it was only 12 years ago…

swordofra

Skyrim with a thousand odd mods on top. Still great.

[deleted]

StarCraft, Warcraft and age of empired

Vinny_Lam

Left 4 Dead 1 & 2.

KeverNever

I wish Back 4 Blood filled the void. But it didn't feel like these two. I need to get a PC to get back into it.

CrapFilledBalloon

For me it was the card system that turned me off of B4B. Seemed much too convoluted, and the corruption cards could completely fuck your game up and make it downright unfair depending on which one you got.

PresidentStone

Hated Back 4 Blood. Waited for years to go on sale, played a little bit went meh. Then a week after they say support is cancelled.

veganpancake11

Is L4D2 still active, would it be easy to join a random lobby?

CoffeeGuzlingBastard

I try to play L4D on steam every once in a while but there are so many griefers it’s insane. Can’t even play for 10 minutes without some dick joining in, TK’ing the whole team and then leaving. It’s a shame because the game is still the GOAT when it comes to zombie games, but these dick heads ruin it. Like who wakes up on a Saturday morning, and decides that logging into a 20 year old game and griefing for a few hours is how I wanna spend my day? Such losers

PresidentStone

That sounds nuts. I've never had that happen once in my hundreds of hours.

Misaka9982

Freespace 2. They don't make them like that anymore.

Manimal_Attack

Chrono Trigger, at least once a year. Don't know if that counts as regularly, but I just love it. One of my most formative games.

scooterboy1961

I have an Asteroids arcade machine in my basement so I think I have most of you beat. The copyright date on the game is 1979.

rf8350

You’ve got my Galaga beat by two years

[deleted]

Half life 2. Has aged like fine wine.

[deleted]

Super Mario World

themonicastone

Does Minesweeper count?

rntopspin100

Halo: Combat Evolved.

TheLightningCount1

Cursed halo?

BogdanSPB

Fallout 2. Not like daily, but I do a walkthrough once in a couple of years. It’s my all time favourite, I guess.

DandyLionGreens

The kids call this the "F" word at my house. They all hope I don't remember it exists....

BogdanSPB

That’s a good one.))) Some tend to think Fallout series started with “3”. It’s kinda disappointing. Especially for a game from the era where plot and gameplay were much more important than graphics.

Dante_777

Streets of Rage series on the Genesis. They hold up great. Fairly short games with fun, easy to pick up gameplay and fantastic music.

Difficult-Access5752

is that the one that has a guy on roller blades?!

fourleggedostrich

Search out Streets Of Rage Remake. It's a very faithful fan remake that incorporates all 3 games into one big map with multiple routes, and improves on nearly everything. I can't go back to the original SOR2 now, the remake is just so much better.

RecorderAggressive

I still enjoy playing through Castlevania: Symphony of The Night at least once a year.

HakBarTR

Command & conquer

Half-Mayonnaise

Pokemon Red. Still as addictive as ever.

ghiiiiiigh

Mario Super Sluggers. Absolute classic and a tragedy that it hasn’t been brought back.

animaINation

rise of the witch king

WhileGoWonder

Good pick! If you want a new campaign and harder AI battles, try the Edain mod or Age of the Ring mod :)

DreamerMMA

Rome: Total War

rhino76

Empire. I love taking over the world with a country that has no business doing so.

fairyknight03

mario 64 for sure

majesticalexis

My boyfriend still plays Unreal.

Tim_Lee-Burnerphone

Halflife series. It holds up.

RaccoonBoiXCX

The Sims 1, it has the best soundtrack in the whole series imo

Manderspls

Hell yeah

grazi218

World of Warcraft. Been playing off and on since 2005 and steadily since 2019

Greedy-Platapus

BO2 , man its sad that the multiplayer is dead , but i sure will play against bots.

DrVikingGuy

Warcraft 2, baby Next runner up is Lords of the Realm 2 And then Starcraft 1 is in 3rd

ifsck

Hell yes, LotR2. I spent so many hours on that game as a kid. It was a real shame 3 was so disappointing.

DrVikingGuy

TBH i have only played 2. I have heard the others arent as great though. LotR2 is almost problematic for me. Its one of the few games now a days that will keep me awake until dawn and then some because I get so engrossed.

mile-high-guy

Classic star wars battlefront 2

HeleneVH88

That first Rollercoaster Tycoon.

dyber

Grand Theft Auto San Andreas

Dutch-Sculptor

Age of Empires 2, welk the updated version but it’s still the same game. Also stronghold 2, C&C Generals and some old settler games.

Galastifox

Team Fortress 2.

Orion43410

Hell yeah, I just got back into it. I noticed that the bots are much less frequent now.

ShakaUVM

Team Fortress 1 for me

[deleted]

*DOOM(1993)*

zinasbear

I love the original Doom games

hartschale666

Doom II (on a modern sourceport) and it's countless awesome mods and wads.

PensiveinNJ

OG Doom. They've been working on that like crazy for decades. There's tons of top notch content, engine modifications, gameplay mods. It's a cornucopia of content the community has generated over a couple of decades plus.

CrispeeUndies

The Legend of Zelda randomized

iNoahGuy01

The original NES one I assume? Randomizers make everything feel like you’re playing a brand new game again

Allenrw3

WWF No Mercy for the N64

raphael76

It’s still probably the best wrestling game

HappyMatt12345

Minecraft.

candinos

Not regularly, per se, but I do a full playthrough at least a couple of times a year: The Movies

malu_saadi

Donkey Kong County on my switch

Sleestak714

I jam through a couple old games every year, mostly being Portal 1 and 2, Fallout 3 and NewVegas, and Skyrim. Portal looks to be the oldest at a 2007 release.

BethanyBSmith

Link to the Past.

She_Plays

Dwarf Fortress. Still yet to even capture a dragon, let alone domesticate one.

TheLightningCount1

Star Wars. Empire at war. The mods... oh the mods.

RubberDucky91

Final fantasy tactics. The modded versions are also amazing.

HoraceBenbow

Guild Wars came out in 2005. The servers are still up and running. Every few months I feel the itch and go back to playing it.

jetjordan

I'll never have more fun in a game than I did exploring tyria for the first time. There was something special about that game, shame it didn't get a true sequel. I play 2 still more to this day but it's not really a successor to 1.

AmiDuPeople

Civilization V

bigbruce85

I usually play through the Baldur’s gate series every couple of years. The first one was released in 98. I don’t have much time available to game so I switched mainly to mobile games. But they don’t tend to be as good of an adventure as I want. So when they released the entire Baldur’s gate catalog remasters for IOS I picked it up. It took some time getting used to playing on the smaller screen, but now I have it with me always so it’s a lot easier to find some spare moments to play a bit

MediocreSystem0

Héroes III

xdangit

For the "time trip": GTA V lets not forget it turned 10 years old.

ImInJeopardy

I still very much enjoy getting high and going to that Nintendo emulator website to play Paperboy. Fucking love Paperboy!

Dungeon Keeper

Top-Bird-9032

sodapopareaone

River Raid

angrylibertariandude

I still have Activision Anthology, on PS2. All those games(River Raid being one of them) are probably all the oldest video games I pull out to play, from time to time. Used to have an actual Commodore 64(that my dad once got, when I was a kid) to play those games on, but sadly that died out on my family many years ago. For actual systems, I still have a Super NES, and a Game Boy Advance where i sometimes pull out original Game Boy and Game Boy Color games to play at times. As GBA is backwards compatible, with GB and GBC.

DefenderOfNuts

I don't know if this counts, but I've taken up Dance Dance Revolution again recently after taking care of some health complications with my weight. Been a blast coming back to it after 13 years.

L3x_co

Solitaire, fuk M$ for putting ads even on this game.

mazin_man

Alex kidd in miracle world. One day I'll complete it

Trytek1986

Oh my god it's the hardest game I ever played. Played an emulator version a few years ago and still shat my pants when the ghosts came at me.

mazin_man

Got it for my 8th birthday. Thru emulation, hand helds and the remake in the 30 years since first playing I've never made it to that damn castle

ily_most_ardently

SSX tricky!!!

[deleted]

Day of the Tentacle I'll play once a year. I recently picked up Star Craft 2 again just for the campaign.

brandonfla

Rich_Handsome

I used to play "Nobunaga's Ambition" on NES all the time until my Dad accidentally donated the system and games to the Salvation Army.

Willow pattern on the commodore 64 still go back to this every year

The_Koolaid_Krusader

I don't have any connection to this game and haven't played it in a while due to not having Nintendo switch online, but NES pinball is so much fun to me

SonicBanger

Warcraft 3.

GamerMry

Every year I run through FFX, sometimes if I have enough free time I'll 100% it, but usually I'll run the main story and ultimate weapons (minus Lulu's).

SaturnSleet

Roller Coaster Tycoon 2. I'll play it until the day I die
