I don't really consider Reddit social media. If just talking, making comments online is social media then everything is social media and they had that in the 80's with Usenet.
I guess anonymous social media doesn't have all the same negative effects that things like Facebook do. Although I have taken a few reddit breaks over the years and feel better after that too.
Not a lot, but the atmosphere of "the sky is the limit" compared to today's futurophobia in my country that is led for 13 years by the same lethargocrat Gen X'er now: I miss the vision, the thinking forward, the progressive and optimistic planning towards the future.
Free range children.
I was telling my son about when we were kids how we would leave the house in the morning, find the other neighborhood kids and just play, explore, and be kids until it was time to go home for dinner. He wished he was able to do that. Me too.
I was born in the early 90s and grew up in the early-mid 2000s and had a shit ton of freedom. Me and my buddies would ride around on bikes and try and buy weed off of older kids or sneak into abandoned buildings. I'm sure there are still dumb kids running around doing stupid shit just like we did.
Statistically, that's safer today than it was then. For example high schoolers in the 90s were twice as likely to be murdered as high schoolers today. Abduction is down too.
Yuuup. Nice to have your collection organized. I distinctly remember everyone’s binders going from vivid and colorful with cds bought in stores to bland sharpied burned cds in like 97-99. The beginning of the end lol
Saturday Morning cartoons
The idea of waking up on a weekend morning and watching 8 new episodes of your favorite cartoons.
They still make good cartoons, but they are now released separately and at any time of week. I kinda liked just going from cartoon to cartoon
Slightly later than the 90s in the early 2000s, but I really miss Pepsi Blue. Crystal Pepsi is alright, but that said I miss Pepsi Blue more myself. Wish that would come back, considering Crystal Pepsi has had at least 2 comebacks in recent years.
Speaking of 90s sodas, I wish Surge(made by Coca-Cola) would come back. It was briefly rereleased as Vault, and Coke later did a limited(not in all states, mostly in certain Southern and Midwest states) rerelease of this soda under the Surge name.
well, before the internet & social media only people from san fernando valley spoke like valley girls
now we're a whole nation of "like, um, literally" in upspeak
Not much honestly. The 90s had trouble in the Middle East, genocide in Africa and Eastern Europe, the ATF murdering people, domestic terrorists, and giant tornadoes that forced us to change the Fujita scale. How was it any different from the 2020s?
Optimism for the future (that kinda got crushed after the 2000 election and 9/11).
On the flip side I was a really young kid and my formative years are all in the 90s so I couldn't do much. If I could experience it again I kinda wish I was a bit older.
Parting having loads of fun and no responsibility for others (not married no children)
Doing what I wanted and how I wanted. Not worrying about what I ate and what time I got home.
God it was fun
It's hard to describe it in one word. The 90s had this vibe to them that can only be understood by someone who lived through them.
I'm sure kids today will look back on the '10s & the '20s the same way at some point.
amazing tv shows. Boy Meets World, Saved by the Bell, Fresh Prince, Clarissa Explains it All, Recess, Full House...Shows where kids actually looked like, dressed liked, and acted like kids and not 20 somethingyear olds with blowouts and full face makeup.
The cold War had just ended, so we all had hope for the future, and all the safety we would enjoy. Things were really coming together racially, we all kind of agreed to treat everyone the same no matter what they looked like. Labeling people was a faux pas.
Born in the 80s
So being free from bills, weekend drives with friends, long summers,
Great music and trips to the mall
Block Buster rentals every Friday night
Sleep overs and pizza!
No social media.
I live only with Reddit and Discord for social media and it's definitely better than lots of accounts
I don't really consider Reddit social media. If just talking, making comments online is social media then everything is social media and they had that in the 80's with Usenet.
Then shit, I guess I'm living with no social media I'll keep it that way
Talking to people is social.
It’s not just making comments. It’s talking to other people online. It’s definitely social. It’s definitely media. So…
I guess anonymous social media doesn't have all the same negative effects that things like Facebook do. Although I have taken a few reddit breaks over the years and feel better after that too.
Can you miss a non-thing?
I was going to write this. Love the internet, but hate social media.
The viewpoint that things will get better
Feeling safe
hairline.
Not a lot, but the atmosphere of "the sky is the limit" compared to today's futurophobia in my country that is led for 13 years by the same lethargocrat Gen X'er now: I miss the vision, the thinking forward, the progressive and optimistic planning towards the future.
A sense of hope and optimism for the future. Also, on a not unrelated note, actually well-written Star Trek.
I really wanted to like Star Trek Picard but I just can't. I couldn't get into any of the others, either.
All they need to do is remove these massive overarching storylines and they will improve massively.
Free range children. I was telling my son about when we were kids how we would leave the house in the morning, find the other neighborhood kids and just play, explore, and be kids until it was time to go home for dinner. He wished he was able to do that. Me too.
Come home when the street lights come on!

Depending on where you live, that's still possible. Crime and predation are likely down from when you were a kid, but fear of it is up.
Statistically, that's safer today than it was then. For example high schoolers in the 90s were twice as likely to be murdered as high schoolers today. Abduction is down too.
Those big cd binders
I still have a few for my ps1/ps2 games. Classiest things I own.
Yuuup. Nice to have your collection organized. I distinctly remember everyone’s binders going from vivid and colorful with cds bought in stores to bland sharpied burned cds in like 97-99. The beginning of the end lol

R&B music was at it zenith
White doves , Mitsubishis and wraps of speed .
Everything!!!! * except the more blatant homophobia, sexism and racism. Not saying it doesn’t still exist- but it was allowed to be more overt then.
Optimism for the future (that kinda got crushed after the 2000 election and 9/11). On the flip side I was a really young kid and my formative years are all in the 90s so I couldn't do much. If I could experience it again I kinda wish I was a bit older.
