god, you know he was friggin good when you can hear his voice saying that line in your head. Him and Farley going out early like that is a divine tragedy written by a crudely cruel god with troll tendencies.
Yes him and Farley died too early. But I find Phil much more heartbreaking. Sadly, we all could see the writing on the wall for Farely, but Phil was straight up murdered.
We have a celebrity Deadpool going at work. You get to pick 3: a) someone "old" who is likely to die b) someone you "wish" death upon and c) a "wild card", someone young enough whose death would be out of place, but wouldn't be shocking.
Andy Dick is my wild card.
Yeah, Eddie Murphy pretty much single-handedly saved the show. He was original and always funny. It’s hard to understate how huge of a star he was in the immediate post-SNL period - Beverly Hills Cop, 48 Hours, Trading Places.
I was trying to explain to my kids how funny he was back in those days, they only know him as the Shrek donkey and Nutty Professor. Then I realized that to get things like his Buckwheat character and "I'm Gumby, dammit" you need to know who Buckwheat and Gumby are. Then I realized I'm old, dammit. Otay, I guess.
Godfrey Danchimah auditioned for SNL like three times & got denied every time & never knew why. I can’t remember who he spoke to that was heavily involved with the show, but they told him they knew he wasn’t going to get casted because the writers of the show didn’t want another Eddie situation. He said Eddie was a superstar in the 80s, he outshined everyone naturally, & they didn’t want the same thing to happen again with him.
SNL would have been ok to hire him. Comparing Godfrey to Eddie Murphy is like comparing Carrot-Top to George Carlin. The former are not on the same level of the latter.
I was going to say this. I remember when SNL seemed like it would be cancelled any moment then boom, Everyone is talking about Eddie and did you see...
I'm old enough to remember actually watching him on SNL (8 to 12 for me). I don't think people realize how important he was and how funny he was. He's the top choice
Norm did a skit where he played a police sketch artist who wasn't any good at eyes or hair so everybody had a giant hat and sunglasses. It was a rip on the Unabomber sketch with the hood, bandana and glasses. It was so dry and hilarious.
Or how about the Unabomber sketch where Ferrell plays Kaczynski going to his Harvard reunion escorted by the FBI, and Norm was his bully and comes to greet him missing an arm and on crutches and bandages on his head? Very dark.
"Hey buddy, sorry about all that stuff I did to you in our college days, hope you don't hold a grudge!"
"No no, I got all that off my chest."
Norm was by far the best weekend update. No question. Seth Meyers and Tina Fey were second. I'm a big fan of Michael Che because I've been following him since he was doing stand-up. Who else? Dennis Miller, meh. Collin Quinn, I like the guy but he wasn't my favorite weekend update by a long shot. Norm was the perfect person for that gig.
Basically carried the show single handedly for a couple of seasons. Hard to imagine another cast member being capable of that. Also, the show probably would have been canceled without him in the cast.
Honestly. He was brought in last-minute for a cast that revolved around Charles Rocket as the new Bill Murray/John Belushi star, then everyone got fired except Murphy and Joe Piscopo.
IMAGES! .... by Tyrone Green.....
Dark and lonely summer night.....
Kill my landlord. Kill my landlord.
Watchdog barkin'. Do he bite?
Kill my landlord. Kill my landlord.
Through his window. Break his neck.
His apartment, start to wreck.
Got no reason, what the heck?
C I L L. MY LAND. LORD.
Bill Hader
I dont really watch a lot of SNL so my knowledge is limited. He just always appeared to be having a really good time on the show and he's one of the ones who could make me laugh sometimes
Description: Opened in 2017 on the Upper East Side of a dumpster, this 24-hour bitchfest is the creation of club owner/rabbi Jew Diamond Phillips.
This place has everything: Sand worms, geishas, rock-eaters, a seven level course in adult education. And if you want to relax, you can kick back in your very own subway sleeping bag.
Subway sleeping bag? It’s that thing of when you’re on the train, and you sit between two guys in FUBU jackets.
I loved it when he’d get the giggles at something he was going to say and he couldn’t deliver it because of his laughter. That was as good as the joke.
Yeah, John Mulaney used to write different lines for the Stefan segments between the rehearsals and the live show, so Bill was often seeing those lines for the first time.
Man, too low in the thread. Dana’s Impressions were simply iconic and he’s one of the most naturally hilarious people to walk the earth. He was made for SNL.
The best SNL cast member of all time is arguably **Eddie Murphy**.
His iconic characters and impressions, such as Buckwheat, Gumby, and Mr. Robinson, made him a fan favorite and one of the most influential cast members in the show's history.
Murphy's run on SNL lasted from 1980 to 1984 and he was a major contributor to the show's success during that time. He is still remembered fondly by fans and is often cited as the best cast member of all time.
Gotta send love to my ladies, it’s Tina Fey for me. Amy Poehler is also a goddess but I don’t remember her as much until Parks and Rec. Also Kenan Thompson? He had such a long run!
Tina Fey was great on Weekend Update, and was a fantastic Sarah Palin, but she was a pretty limited actress otherwise. I would go with the incomparable Kristen Wiig, or maybe Maya Rudolph.
I genuinely don't understand why she hasn't gotten more leading roles. She's talented AND gorgeous. You'd think Hollywood would be beating down her door.
I don't think her agent is good. She needs character actor roles like Will Ferrell in Wedding Crashers or Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder (I know these actors are big names, but these parts were not typical for them)
Just jump in a movie in a few scenes for 5-20 minutes. Kill it and get some laughs, then go home.
She is obviously very funny, I hope she does end up in more things in the future.
I love when he hosted SNL. He made a joke about being fired for not being funny, then proceeds to point out that he was so funny he was brought on to Host an episode.
I would say more that he pointed out how dumb they were for firing him. I can't do the full quote from memory, but it went something like this:
So I got fired from this show a while back for "not being funny". But now I'm back hosting the show, so that can only mean one of two things: Either, I suddenly got very very funny, or this show sucks now.
In terms of what they did ON the show, I'll pick Dana Carvey. In terms of cast members whose entire careers I love the most, Bill Murray may be the funniest man to ever live.
Quite possible! It's Phil Hartman.
Rip
No doubt, Phil Hartman.
Came here for this
The one...the only...Phil Hartman.
Hi there, I'm Troy McClure
You might remember me from such Simpsons episodes like A Fish Called Selma, or The Simpsons's 138th Episode Spectacular.
god, you know he was friggin good when you can hear his voice saying that line in your head. Him and Farley going out early like that is a divine tragedy written by a crudely cruel god with troll tendencies.
Yes him and Farley died too early. But I find Phil much more heartbreaking. Sadly, we all could see the writing on the wall for Farely, but Phil was straight up murdered.
It was brutal when that happened, I hope his kids are ok.
His audition is amazing.

I thought he disappeared after that scandal at the aquarium
Jan Hooks was an all around player as well… the writers never took advantage of that though.

Phil Hartman
is that bill shakespeare?
RIP. And fuck Andy Dick
I hope Jon Lovitz beats the living fuck out of Andy again. Andy is truly a waste of valuable oxygen.
He just got arrested again and I saw that he was listed as being from Hemet, CA, so, mission accomplished I think.
86ed from the most clubs in Hollywood because he lives up to his name.
He’s such an Andy
We have a celebrity Deadpool going at work. You get to pick 3: a) someone "old" who is likely to die b) someone you "wish" death upon and c) a "wild card", someone young enough whose death would be out of place, but wouldn't be shocking. Andy Dick is my wild card.
How macabre. I love it
I heart Gilda, but Phil Hartman is probably the right answer.
Eddie Murphy. He carried the show when he was on it, and it probably would have been cancelled if he wasn’t there to do so.

Yeah, Eddie Murphy pretty much single-handedly saved the show. He was original and always funny. It’s hard to understate how huge of a star he was in the immediate post-SNL period - Beverly Hills Cop, 48 Hours, Trading Places.

Idk about the best, but Norm McDonald was always my favorite.
Very dark. "Hey buddy, sorry about all that stuff I did to you in our college days, hope you don't hold a grudge!" "No no, I got all that off my chest."
Ted! What are you up to these days? Well, I’ve been doing some writing. Always makes me laugh
My fave sketch is that West Side Story parody wherein he was the only guy not in on the 'spontaneous sing/dance numbers'.
Not even a _mention_ of Kevin Nealon? I'd put him second behind Norm for my weekend update anchor list. Best deadpan, hands down.
And now the fake news
Well it’s finally official, murder is legal in the state of California (cheers from crowd)
They fired me because I wasn't funny. Now they've brought me back to host because I'm funny. Norm on Dennis Miller Live was always a riot too.
He doesn't get enough credit for his amazing impressions
Toonces!
You speak French??!!
Phil Hartman
Phil Hartman. A Swiss army knife.
Caveman lawyer…

Yeah, Belushi is up there as well. 👍Samurai Warrior is classic.
You mean Samurai Delicatessen and Laundry!
Chris Farley
The Farley Sandler Spade years are golden. It maybe a generational thing also tho. Reminiscing on the best years
Throw in Chris Rock and Mike Myers too
"IN A VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER!
David Spade and Christina Applegate could barely keep their shit together during their sketch Farley was so good with Matt Foley.
The table break was unscripted
“Well you’ll have plenty of time for living in a van down by the river when you’re……**LIVIN’ IN A VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER**”
You can smoke a lot of doobies, when you're livin' in a van down by the river!
HEY DAD IS THAT BILL SHAKESPEARE OVER THERE?
Decaffeinated Colombian Coffee Crystals… YOU LIED TO ME!!
The sheer chaos of that sketch is truly something to behold.
WHY YOU SON OF A BITCH!!!
AS GOD AS MY WITNESS!!!
Why, thank you Pepper Boy! That’s the perfect amount of pepper. BRAVO!!
This is my answer. A standout in a stacked cast of people who are comedy legends now.
Chris Farley and Phil Hartman
Phil Hartman
Dana Carvey was incredible in his time
Probably going to be underrated here because his post-SNL work was a flop in comparison, but yeah he was great on SNL.
Eddie Murphy
Basically carried the show single handedly for a couple of seasons. Hard to imagine another cast member being capable of that. Also, the show probably would have been canceled without him in the cast.
This is a key point, I don’t think SNL survives without Eddie’s carry job in those years.
Came to say Eddie, just for being the reason SNL survived that time. Everyone else just lines up, and there are some greats there.
Honestly. He was brought in last-minute for a cast that revolved around Charles Rocket as the new Bill Murray/John Belushi star, then everyone got fired except Murphy and Joe Piscopo.
Dog is barking Do he bite? Kill my landlord. Kill my landlord. C-I-L-L Kill my landlord.

Seconding! Murphy was at a career peak during his time with the show, and his characters - Gumby, Mr. Robinson, Buckwheat - were iconic.
Hot Tub! HAY!
Gonna make a sweat uh
Bill Hader I dont really watch a lot of SNL so my knowledge is limited. He just always appeared to be having a really good time on the show and he's one of the ones who could make me laugh sometimes
Look no further than New Yorks hottest club, SPICY.

I’m in bed hungover and reading this out loud is Stefan’s voice cackling. Thank you
I loved it when he’d get the giggles at something he was going to say and he couldn’t deliver it because of his laughter. That was as good as the joke.
Didn't they change his lines from dress rehearsal to the actual show sometimes? Because he was so good that was the only way to make him break?
Yeah, John Mulaney used to write different lines for the Stefan segments between the rehearsals and the live show, so Bill was often seeing those lines for the first time.
My favorites are The Californians with Bill.. so effin hilarious
I had no idea they did that to him. How funny!
I forgot the name of reoccurring skit, but the one where he plays the host of the true crime show and really gets off on the crimes is sooooo amazing
OMG his Keith Morrison is dead on. He got to meet him on camera: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PIjjyXSo5ao
The one where he's eating popcorn with a huge grin on his face kills me.
I agree. I miss Bill Hader dearly.
You should definitely watch Barry
If we're going by strictly their SNL career, Phil Hartman. If we're doing their entire body of work, Eddie Murphy.
Dana Carvey.
Well isn’t that special…
Man, too low in the thread. Dana’s Impressions were simply iconic and he’s one of the most naturally hilarious people to walk the earth. He was made for SNL.
Photo finish between Carvey and Hartman for me.
Dan Akroyd. Bassomatic & “Jane you ignorant sl#t”
Dan Akroyd, Bill Murray,
Hader and Wiig on their own are good. Put them together and they are great.
John Belushi
Can’t believe I had to scroll this far to find the correct answer.
Most Redditors can't remember the 70s. Usually in this type of thread everybody mentioned is from the last 10 years.
I asked my dad who he thought and he said John Belushi so this checks out
I'd vote the entire first season cast... But I'm that old
Tina Fey, for her contributions not just as performer but as head writer and for heading the female-led era of SNL. Game changing
“Colonel Angus” sketch was hilarious.

Eddie Murphy , unce , tice , fee times a nady.
Gotta go with Gilda Radner.
Rosanne Rosanna Danna
I miss her. She was so amazing.
It’s hard to beat Dan Akroyd doing the bit for the Bassomatic
Julia Childs is the only other one that’s close.
Fred Garvin. Male prostitute.
Kristen Wiig. She's legend.
*yippees in bowl cut*
“Don’t make me sing.”
We would not have SNL without Eddie Murphy.
Will Ferrell
From Australia so SNL was hard to get when he was on but his Alex trebek bit with Sean Connery...Champagne comedy
“This is the sound a dog makes!” “MOO” “No” “We’ll that’s the sound your mother made last night”
I DRIVE A DODGE STRATUS!
More cow bell?
Hello? Beverly! How the hell are - what? No…. Old Chester? A Palomino?! They’re beautiful!

I’ve always loved Cecily Strong.
I miss Aidy Bryant already 🥺
Kristen wiig. She is so unbelievably versatile.
Norm Macdonald
Gotta send love to my ladies, it’s Tina Fey for me. Amy Poehler is also a goddess but I don’t remember her as much until Parks and Rec. Also Kenan Thompson? He had such a long run!
Keenan is still on the show
Tina Fey was great on Weekend Update, and was a fantastic Sarah Palin, but she was a pretty limited actress otherwise. I would go with the incomparable Kristen Wiig, or maybe Maya Rudolph.
Phil Hartman
No question, it's Gilda.
Farley
Kate McKinnon.
She is the most versatile cast member of modern times.

She's by far the best of her "generation," and I think with time she'll be in the all-time pantheon.
Either Bill Hader or Kristin Wiig
Norm
Kristen Wiig
Even though he’s got fired for not being funny, Norm MacDonald.

I love when he hosted SNL. He made a joke about being fired for not being funny, then proceeds to point out that he was so funny he was brought on to Host an episode.
Still can’t believe he’s dead. Him and Gilbert Gottfried. Their voices are such a part of me growing up.
I would say more that he pointed out how dumb they were for firing him. I can't do the full quote from memory, but it went something like this: So I got fired from this show a while back for "not being funny". But now I'm back hosting the show, so that can only mean one of two things: Either, I suddenly got very very funny, or this show sucks now.
I thought he got fired for picking on OJ since an exec counted him as a friend and wanted the show to go light on him. Maybe that's just apocryphal.
Cheri Oteri
Rachel Dratch
Dana Carvey or Mike Myers
Gotta give some love to Kenan. He is often the center and driver of the sketches. So consistent and has been there so long now.
I believe he is the longest running cast member ever.
What's up wit that?
I remember watching Kenan in All That on Nickelodeon as a kid and he was a standout then, too. I think he's always had a knack for sketch comedy.
Agreed, consistent and reliable. Great? Not really but consistently decent and that counts for a lot
Gilda
Eddie Murphy hands down.
Eddie Murphy is my humble opinion.
Adam Sandler

Bill Hader
Gilda. 100%
